Therefore, geological logging of exploratory tunnels has always been taking the method of manual sketch work which has low efficiency and poor informatization degree of products, and it is a technical issue requiring urgent settlement for geological logging of small tunnels. This paper proposes and studies novel methods of photographic geological logging suitable for small tunnels, including image acquisition, image orientation control, image geometric correction, unfolded image map generation and geological attitude measurement, etc. Experiments show that the method can meet the precision requirement of geological logging. The novel method helps to realize the fast acquisition and processing of image-based geological logging data for small tunnels, and the forms of logging result are more abundant and more applicable to informatized management and application of geological logging data.展开更多

Measurement from digital photographs could provide a superior clinical alternative to the common goniometer as devices for capturing digital photographs are becoming more accessible, measurement accuracy is assisted with the associated software and images can be saved and stored for later reference. This ability to store images with measurements could be particularly useful in research involving knee range of motion. This study evaluated the validity and reliability of a simple photographic measurement technique to measure knee flexion and extension of patients following knee arthroplasty.Methods: Knee flexion and extension of 38 subjects who had undergone total knee arthroplasty were assessed at the one year post-operative review with the digital technique and a universal goniometer as the criterion reference. Digital measurements were repeated one month later by the first assessor (intra-tester reliability) and another independent assessor (inter-tester reliability).Results: Validity: the digital technique was found to have a high level of agreement with the universal goniometer measurements (all MAD sion with almost perfect Intra-Class Correlations (Intra-tester;flexion 0.99, extension 0.96;inter-tester;flexion 0.97, extension 0.93).Conclusion: Measurement of knee range of motion from digital photographs can be used in routine clinical total knee arthroplasty follow-up instead of, or interchangeably with the universal goniometer.展开更多

We investigated the impact of convexity and isoperimetric deficits on the accuracy of sectional area estimates of tree stems using traditional methods(caliper,tape,formulas based on stem diameter and circumference).In...We investigated the impact of convexity and isoperimetric deficits on the accuracy of sectional area estimates of tree stems using traditional methods(caliper,tape,formulas based on stem diameter and circumference).In two complementary experiments,the use of photographs to estimate cross-sectional areas was first validated,then the use of a caliper and diameter tape was computer-simulated.The results indicated that the photographic method offers high precision,with mean relative errors below 0.1%,minimal deviation,and no significant bias,and the traditional methods led to substantial and systematic errors,with deviations from circularity and convexity significantly increasing the errors in area estimation.展开更多

We studied the influence of surveyed area size on density estimates by means of camera-trapping in a low-density felid population(1-2 individuals/100 km^(2)).We applied non-spatial capture-recapture(CR)and spatial CR(...We studied the influence of surveyed area size on density estimates by means of camera-trapping in a low-density felid population(1-2 individuals/100 km^(2)).We applied non-spatial capture-recapture(CR)and spatial CR(SCR)models for Eurasian lynx during winter 2005/2006 in the northwestern Swiss Alps by sampling an area divided into 5 nested plots ranging from 65 to 760 km^(2).CR model density estimates(95%CI)for models M_(0)and M_(h)decreased from 2.61(1.55-3.68)and 3.6(1.62-5.57)independent lynx/100 km^(2),respectively,in the smallest to 1.20(1.04-1.35)and 1.26(0.89-1.63)independent lynx/100 km^(2),respectively,in the largest area surveyed.SCR model density estimates also decreased with increasing sampling area but not significantly.High individual range overlaps in relatively small areas(the edge effect)is the most plausible reason for this positive bias in the CR models.Our results confirm that SCR models are much more robust to changes in trap array size than CR models,thus avoiding overestimation of density in smaller areas.However,when a study is concerned with monitoring population changes,large spatial efforts(area surveyed≥760 km^(2))are required to obtain reliable and precise density estimates with these population densities and recapture rates.展开更多
In recent years, the curriculum of College English(CE) in China has seen a trend that veers away from pure language-oriented teaching toward an emphasis on the cultivation of students' cultural or intercultural co...In recent years, the curriculum of College English(CE) in China has seen a trend that veers away from pure language-oriented teaching toward an emphasis on the cultivation of students' cultural or intercultural competence. In this context, the CE textbooks have been highly responsiblized in the transformative agenda, and the use of photographic illustrations in the textbooks has been increasingly valued as a way to include culture carriers. Our study draws perspectives from communicative semiotics and visual semiotics to investigate the way in which photographic illustrations have been involved in the learning process in order to find out whether and how they promote students' cultural and intercultural acquisition. We focus on the semiosis process engendered by the photos as signs and their modes of representation, which largely determines the process and result of cultural acquisition. Our analysis demonstrates that while the photographic illustrations have been designed to enhance cultural learning in hypothetical situations, when placed in a real learning context together with the texts and learning tasks, some of the photos may not successfully promote the process of cultural acquisition, since learners' interpretation of the photos can be diverted or limited by other aspects of the learning context.展开更多

Standard photographs were taken of 242 C...It is generally recognized that Caucasians and Asians have different skin aging features. The aim of this study was to develop a facial wrinkle grading scale for Chinese women. Standard photographs were taken of 242 Chinese women. Six sets of 0 to 9 wrinkle scales with reference photographs and descriptions were selected, including grading scales for resting and hyperkinetic crow＇s feet, frontalis lines, glabellar frown lines, and nasolabial folds. To identify the scale by objective quantitative measurement, skin surface measurements from the Visioscan~ VC98 were used. To test the reliability and validity of our wrinkle scale, a multi-rater consensus method was used. A double-blind, randomized, vehicle-controlled 12-week study was conducted to use this clinical photo-score to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Centella triterpenes cream~ in treating crow＇s feet. A newly developed 10-point photographic and descriptive scale emerged from this study. The final atlas of these photographs contained a total of 6 sets with 10 pictures each. From 0 to 9, surface evaluation of smoothness （SEsm） parametric measurements decreased progressively, indicating that the scale increased inversely. Weighted kappa coefficients for intra-assessor were between 0.75-0.87. The overall Kendall＇s coefficient is 0.86 on the first rating and 0.87 on the second rating. Thirty- six volunteers were recruited and 35 subjects completed a 12-week trial. Clinical photo-score by investigator showed a significant difference （P 〈 0.05） between the treatment side and control side after 4 weeks. Use of these scales in clinical settings to evaluate facial wrinkles in Asians individuals is recommended.展开更多
