The contemporary English novelist and literary critic David Lodge has published sixteen works of fiction, including the latest published short story collections The Man Who Wouldn't Get Up and Other Stories(2016).In this work, the first story The Man Who Wouldn't Get Up is the earliest one which was written in the winter of 1965-1966 and mainly tells about a professional man who refuses to get up in order to escape the harsh world and I chiefly discuss the paratexts of it.Gerard Genette defines paratexts as"are those liminal devices and conventions, both within and outside the book, that form part of the complex mediation between book, author, publisher, and reader:titles, forewords, epigraphs, and publishers'jacket copy are part of a book's private and public history."In this paper,I adopt Genette's theory of paratexts which provides a unique theoretical approach for fiction study and apply it to the analysis of Lodge's The Man Who Wouldn't Get Up and Other Stories. The work is rich in miscellaneous paratexts which are one of the characteristics of this work and aid comprehension while shortening the distance between author and reader. The paper mainly examines the peritext:the elements inserted into the interstices, such as,the cover, title, epigraph, biography of the author, reviews of the book, foreword, jacket copy, illustration, dedication, afterword and acknowledgements.Investigating the peritexts of the work indicates the unique function and the significance of the thresholds of interpretation to the fictional text.Ultimately, they become the medium of communication between the author, the text and the reader, and are exemplary of Lodge's creativity and hybrid narrative style. 展开更多

The distinctive style of Charles Lamb’s essays has been interpreted in different ways-abundant allusions and rhetorical devices, quaintness and vernacular, antique colloquialism, witty humor, bitter sweetness, profound humanity, etc.Nevertheless,so far the extensive use of parentheses and dashes in his representative work Essays of Elia has not been paid enough attention and a detailed investigation is virtually absent. This paper presents an effort to analyze Essays of Elia through probing into the parentheses and dashes as paratexts in regard to their stylistic effects from two perspectives-the linguistic perspective and the semantic perspective,in hope of expanding the scope of“paratext”.The major finding of the paper is that in Essays of Elia, parentheses and dashes as paratexts serving as stylistic markers are indispensable supplements which have special stylistic effects. 展开更多

This paper contains a charge of plagiarism in which Cheung Yik-man, the translator of a classic Chinese novel San Guo Yan Yi, failed to acknowledge the existing translation by Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang while Cheung's retranslation is extremely close to Yangs' with some changes only in the first two chapters. In this case, paratexts to Cheung Yikman's version covered up the behaviour of plagiarism, which is different from Lawrence Venuti's discussion of paratexts' function in his 2004 essay as "an immediate form of intertextuality" and "make[s] explicit the competing interpretation". This article examines the unreliability of paratexts in intralingual translation, based on a case in English translations of San Guo Yan Yi: Cheung Yik-man's translation of "The Battle of the Red Cliff" excerpted from the novel. 展开更多

William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice(1600)is controversial as a result of its negative depiction of the Jewish figure Shylock. In translating this literary work into Chinese, the translator is quite possibly involved in reconstructing the image of Jews,as Shylock being the representative in The Merchant of Venice, consciously,or unconsciously. In this paper, the translation of The Merchant of Venice by Shiqiu Liang(2001)is selected to find out how the image of Jews is conveyed to the Chinese readers.Due to the translator’s translation principle of being loyal to the original text, the content in the original text is transferred to the target readers without manipulation. However, the translation work was conducted with a particular social background which is believed to have influenced the translator’s interpretation of the original text.Accompanied the selected translation is a paratext,in which the translator expresses his own opinion on both the playwright and the Jewish and non-Jewish figures in the play;with this paratext, the target readers understand the figures in the play in a different way. Therefore,a different image of Jews is reconstructed in the translation, which is mainly analyzed at the level of larger textual units reflecting hierarchical relations from the perspective of imagology. 展开更多

The broad theoretical underpinning of this paper is that food is a vital part of the second-order signifying modes in literary texts. Its definite thesis,in relation to the age-long debates on power dichotomy between male and female gender,is that while men merely enjoy and noisily exercise social power sustained by patriarchy, which is a contrivance, women possess a great deal of authentic powers usually not overtly acknowledged. These theoretical and ideological(thesis)statements respectively are demonstrated through a semiotic reading and analysis of four foodspheres in J.P.Clark’s The Wives’Revolt, using the critical lenses of gastro-criticism,social semiotics and textual cooperation theory.Through these analytical lenses, the paper recognises that each of the foodspheres in this play is a hypertext which transcodes or interogates the diverse gendered power relation hypotexts embodied in religious,socio-cultural and institutional semiospheres. It concludes that the power that women exercise in food preparation and administration,as signified in some of the foodspheres analysed,is a semiotic prototype of the many other unnoticed powers, through which the female homo rule the world. 展开更多
