William Somerset Maugham was one of the most popular British writers of his era.Many of his works are closely related to China,among which is the famous novel The Painted Veil.This novel narrates the love story betwee...William Somerset Maugham was one of the most popular British writers of his era.Many of his works are closely related to China,among which is the famous novel The Painted Veil.This novel narrates the love story between the heroine Kitty,an attractive but vainglorious middle-class lady,and the intelligent bacteriologist Walter Fane.This thesis aims at exploring the hetero image of China in The Painted Veil from the perspective of imagology.It comprises four chapters.Chapter one introduces the definition of the terms“Image”and“hetero image”.Chapter two analyzes Maugham’s diversified concepts of China:one is the positive and good image,and the other is the negative image.Chapter three illustrates the specific images of China revealed in the novel The Painted Veil,on both positive and negative aspects.After the exploration of the image of China from the perspective of imagology,we can sum up that actually,the image of China in Maugham’s eyes indicated in The Painted Veil is not the real China.It is a combination of the real world observed by Maugham and the imaginative world conceived by him influenced by his own specific culture and society.展开更多

Scrap metals are typically covered with surface contaminants,such as paint,dust,and rust,which can significantly affect the emission spectrum during laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy(LIBS)based sorting.In this stud...Scrap metals are typically covered with surface contaminants,such as paint,dust,and rust,which can significantly affect the emission spectrum during laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy(LIBS)based sorting.In this study,the effects of paint layers on metal surfaces during LIBS classification were investigated.LIBS spectra were collected from metal surfaces painted with black and white paints by ablation with a nanosecond pulsed laser(wavelength=1064 nm,pulse width=7 ns).For the black-painted samples,the LIBS spectra showed a broad background emission,emission lines unrelated to the target metals,large shot-to-shot variation,and a relatively low signal intensity of the target metal,causing poor classification accuracy even at high shot numbers.Cleaning the black paint layer by ablating over a wide area prior to LIBS analysis resulted in high classification accuracy with fewer shot numbers.A method to determine the number of cleaning shots necessary to obtain high classification accuracy and high throughput is proposed on the basis of the change in LIBS signal intensity during cleaning shots.For the white-painted samples,the paint peeled off the metal surface after the first shot,and strong LIBS signals were measured after the following shot,which were attributed to the nanoparticles generated by the ablation of the paint,allowing an accurate classification after only two shots.The results demonstrate that different approaches must be employed depending on the paint color to achieve high classification accuracy with fewer shot numbers.展开更多
Planation surfaces （PS） play a major role in reconstruction of the evolutionary history of landforms in local areas. Thus, objective and consistent mapping of planation surfaces from remotely sensed data （e.g., sat...Planation surfaces （PS） play a major role in reconstruction of the evolutionary history of landforms in local areas. Thus, objective and consistent mapping of planation surfaces from remotely sensed data （e.g., satellite imagery, digital elevation models （DEMs）） is paramount for interpreting the geomorphological evolution. Due to the lack of dated sedimentary covers and the difficulties of com-prehensive field work, the number and age of planation surfaces in the Southwest Hubei （湖北） Prov-ince of China are still controversial. In order to map the PS in the study area, four data visualization techniques including ETM＋ false color composite, grey-scale DEM, shaded relief model （SRM） and painted relief model （P M） were examined. It is found that the PRM is the most optimal technique for planation surface mapping. The study area was successfully mapped by visual interpretation of a PRM derived from ASTER GDEM. The mapped PS was divided into five classes in terms of elevation ac-cording to previous studies, varying from 1 700-2 000 （PS1）, 1 300-1 500 （PS2）, 1 000-1 200 （PS3）, 800-900 （PS4） to 500-600 （PS5） m. The results were partially compared with the published works. It is revealed that this method of mapping enjoys a higher accuracy and can reduce the time and ef- fort required in the traditional mapping to a large extent. The results also demonstrated that the PRM is an effective tool for geomorphological fea-ture mapping with considerable accuracy. The pre- liminary results can serve to facilitate locating rep-resentative samples for the planation surfaces dating, thus to determine the ages of PS in the study areas.展开更多
