Numerical Investigation of CO_(2)Contaminant Transport and Deposition in an In-Line Pulse Tube Cryocooler

Pulse tube cryocoolers are widely employed in cryogenic systems,where gas contamination has become a critical factor limiting both performance and service life.To further investigate the condensation behavior of contaminants,this study develops a two-dimensional axisymmetric model of a linear-type cryocooler to simulate the transport and deposition processes of trace CO_(2),evaluating the impact of contamination on system pressure drop under various operating conditions.Results indicate that CO_(2)diffusion is primarily driven by concentration gradients.The CO_(2)deposition rate increases markedly at low temperatures and high concentrations,with over 90%of deposition occurring in the cold-end heat exchanger.Under different concentration distributions,dry ice predominantly accumulates in the cold-end heat exchanger;however,notable differences emerge in the pulse tube.In the uniform distribution case,CO_(2)tends to deposit along the inner wall of the pulse tube,whereas in the gradual release scenario,deposition mainly occurs on the cold-end flow straightening mesh screen.Dry ice deposition significantly increases the pressure drop across the system and decreases the pressure wave amplitude,resulting in a degradation of cooling capacity.This study lays a foundation for further investigation into the thermal properties of contaminant layers and provides theoretical guidance for optimizing cold-end components to improve contamination resilience. 展开更多

Immersion coupled S-type cooling tube battery thermal management for electric vehicle integration under harsh conditions

An effective lithium-ion battery thermal management system(BTMS) ensures the safety of electric vehicles(EVs) and energy storage systems. Immersion cooling is known for high efficiency and excellent temperature uniformity. To address the high energy consumption of secondary cooling loops in vehicles for cooling immersion oil, this paper proposes a method of immersion coupled cooling tubes. Battery heat is directly absorbed by the immersion liquid and rapidly dissipated via cooling water in the S-type cooling tube(SCT). This work investigated the effects of structural parameters, immersion fluid medium, and operating parameters on the cooling performance of the BTMS. The results showed that the fin height(h_(f)) has no significant effect on the cooling performance. Both Transformer Oil and HFE-7100 delivered outstanding thermal management, reaching a maximum of 36.73℃ and 41.39℃ while maintaining narrow temperature differences of only 3.70℃ and 2.09℃ apart, respectively. When the ambient temperature reached 40℃ and HFE-7100 was used as the immersion liquid, the maximum temperature difference remained consistently below 3℃. Subsequently, a sensitivity analysis was conducted on the respective influential parameters. It was found that inlet water temperature(T_(in)) and immersion fluids exert the most significant influence on the system performance. Finally, different immersion cooling schemes were compared, which demonstrated the advantages of the system proposed in this study under harsh condition, thereby supporting the application of different schemes under various scenarios. It can be directly integrated with the vehicle-mounted cooling circuit system, thereby reducing energy consumption and weight, and offering new insights for research on thermal management systems for EVs. 展开更多

Energy absorption behavior of mild steel tube-core sandwich structures for rockfall protection

Sandwich structures are widely favored for their lightweight,high strength and superior impact mitigation capabilities in blast mitigation and transportation safety applications.Their application in large-scale,high-energy rockfall protection remains limited due to their relatively low volumetric energy absorption efficiency and the complex fabrication processes of key energy-absorbing components.To address these limitations,this study proposes a novel sandwich structure incorporating mild steel tubes as core energy absorbers to efficiently mitigate highenergy rockfall impacts.A finite element model was developed in LS-DYNA to systematically investigate the deformation and energy absorption behaviors.Comprehensive parametric analyses were conducted to quantify the effects of key design variables,including tube wall thickness,tube spacing(number of tubes),and infill materials.The results demonstrate that increasing tube wall thickness significantly enhances ultimate energy absorption,with 12-mm-thick tubes absorbing 2.2 times more energy than 6-mm-thick tubes.Lateral constraints induced by adjacent tubes improve specific energy absorption per unit displacement by approximately 30%-45%.Furthermore,incorporating infill materials considerably enhances energy absorption,with aluminum foam infills achieving an 81%increase compared to empty tubes.Nevertheless,higher energy absorption capacity typically leads to greater peak impact forces,increasing the number of tubes offers a better balance between energy absorption and impact force,optimizing the structural performance.These findings provide valuable theoretical insights and practical guidelines for designing sandwich structures in civil and infrastructure engineering applications for effective rockfall protection. 展开更多

Van der Waals(vdW)heterostructures have attracted much attention due to their distinctive optical,electrical,and thermal properties,demonstrating promising potential in areas such as photocatalysis,ultrafast photonics,and free electron radiation devices.Particularly,they are promising platforms for studying thermionic emission.It is illustrated that using vdW heterostructure-based thermionic emission can enhance heat transfer in vacuum devices.As a proof of concept,the approach is demonstrated to offer a promising solution for the long-standing overheating issue in X-ray tubes.Specifically,it is shown that the saturated target temperature of a 2000 W X-ray tube can be reduced from around 1200℃ to 490℃.Additionally,it is also demonstrated that by reducing the height of the Schottky barrier formed in the vdW heterostructures,the thermionic cooling performance can be enhanced.The findings pave the way for the development of high-power X-ray tubes. 展开更多

The continuous improvement of solar thermal technologies is essential to meet the growing demand for sustainable heat generation and to support global decarbonization efforts.This study presents the design,implementation,and validation of a real-time monitoring framework based on the Internet ofThings(IoT)and cloud computing to enhance the thermal performance of evacuated tube solar water heaters(ETSWHs).A commercial system and a custom-built prototype were instrumented with Industry 4.0 technologies,including platinum resistance temperature detectors(PT100),solar irradiance and wind speed sensors,a programmable logic controller(PLC),a SCADAinterface,and a cloud-connected IoT gateway.Data were processed locally and transmitted to cloud storage for continuous analysis and visualization via amobile application.Experimental results demonstrated the prototype’s superior thermal energy storage capacity−47.4 vs.36.2 MJ for the commercial system,representing a 31%—achieved through the novel integration of Industry 4.0 architecture with an optimized collector design.This improvement is attributed to optimized geometric design parameters,including a reduced tilt angle,increased inter-tube spacing,and the incorporation of an aluminum reflective surface.These modifications collectively enhanced solar heat absorption and reduced optical losses.The framework effectively identified thermal stratification,monitored environmental effects on heat transfer,and enabled real-time system diagnostics.By integrating automation,IoT,and cloud computing,the proposed architecture establishes a scalable and replicable model for the intelligent management of solar thermal systems,facilitating predictive maintenance and future integration with artificial intelligence for performance forecasting.This work provides a practical,data-driven approach to digitizing and optimizing heat transfer systems,promoting more efficient and sustainable solar thermal energy applications. 展开更多

Energy shortage has become one of themost concerning issues in the world today,and improving energy utilization efficiency is a key area of research for experts and scholars worldwide.Small-diameter heat exchangers offer advantages such as reduced material usage,lower refrigerant charge,and compact structure.However,they also face challenges,including increased refrigerant pressure drop and smaller heat transfer area inside the tubes.This paper combines the advantages and disadvantages of both small and large-diameter tubes and proposes a combined-diameter heat exchanger,consisting of large and small diameters,for use in the indoor units of split-type air conditioners.There are relatively few studies in this area.In this paper,A theoretical and numerical computation method is employed to establish a theoretical-numerical calculation model,and its reliability is verified through experiments.Using this model,the optimal combined diameters and flow path design for a combined-diameter heat exchanger using R32 as the working fluid are derived.The results show that the heat transfer performance of all combined diameter configurations improves by 2.79%to 8.26%compared to the baseline design,with the coefficient of performance(COP)increasing from 4.15 to 4.27~4.5.These designs can save copper material,but at the cost of an increase in pressure drop by 66.86%to 131.84%.The scheme IIIH,using R32,is the optimal combined-diameter and flow path configuration that balances both heat transfer performance and economic cost. 展开更多

The thermochemical non-equilibrium phenomena encountered by hypersonic vehicles present significant challenges in their design.To investigate the thermochemical reaction flow behind shock waves,the non-equilibrium radiation in the visible range using a shock tube was studied.Experiments were conducted with a shock velocity of 4.7 km/s,using nitrogen at a pressure of 20 Pa.To address measurement difficulties associated with weak radiation,a special square section shock tube with a side length of 380 mm was utilized.A high-speed camera characterized the shock wave’s morphology,and a spectrograph and a monochromator captured the radiation.The spectra were analyzed,and the numerical spectra were compared with experimental results,showing a close match.Temperature changes behind the shock wave were obtained and compared with numerical predictions.The findings indicate that the vibrational temperatures are overestimated,while the vibrational relaxation time is likely underestimated,due to the oversimplified portrayals of the non-equilibrium relaxation process in the models.Additionally,both experimental and simulated time-resolved profiles of radiation intensity at specific wavelengths were analyzed.The gathered data aims to enhance computational fluid dynamics codes and radiation models,improving their predictive accuracy. 展开更多

This study investigates the bond performance at the interfacial region shared by Ultra-High Performance Concrete(UHPC)and steel tubes through push-out tests.This study examines how changes in steel fiber volumetric ratio and thickness of steel tube influence the bond strength characteristics.The results show that as the enhancement of the steel tube wall thickness,the ultimate bond strength at the interface improves significantly,whereas the initial bond strength exhibits only slight variations.The influence of steel fiber volumetric ratio presents a nonlinear trend,with initial bond strength decreasing at low fiber content and increasing significantly as fiber content rises.Additionally,finite element(FE)simulations were applied to replicate the experimental conditions,and the outcomes showed strong correlation with the experimental data,confirming the exactitude of the FE model in predicting the bond behavior at the UHPC-Steel interface.These findings provide valuable insights for optimizing the design of UHPC-Filled steel tubes in high-performance structure. 展开更多

The commercialization of solid oxide fuel cells depends on the cathode,which possesses both high catalytic activity and a thermal-expansion coefficient(TEC)that aligns with the electrolyte.Although the cobalt-based cathode La_(0.6)Sr_(0.4)CoO_(3)(LSC)offers excellent catalytic performance,its TEC is significantly larger than that of the electrolyte.In this study,we mechanically mix Sm_(0.2)Ce_(0.8)O_(2−δ)(SDC)with LSC to create a composite cathode.By incorporating 50wt%SDC,the TEC decreases significantly from 18.29×10^(−6) to 13.90×10^(−6) K^(−1).Under thermal-shock conditions ranging from room temperature to 800℃,the growth rate of polarization resistance is only 0.658%per cycle,i.e.,merely 49%that of pure LSC.The button cell comprising the LSC-SDC composite cathode operates stably for over 900 h without Sr segregation,with a voltage growth rate of 1.11%/kh.A commercial flat-tube cell(active area:70 cm^(2))compris-ing the LSC-SDC composite cathode delivers 54.8 W at 750℃.The distribution of relaxation-time shows that the non-electrode portion is the main rate-limiting step.This study demonstrates that the LSC-SDC mixture strategy effectively improves the compatibility with the electrolyte while maintaining a high output,thus rendering it a promising commercial cathode material. 展开更多

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV)swarm collaboration enhances mission effectiveness.However,fixed-wing UAV swarm flights face collaborative safety control problems within a limited airspace in complex environments.Aimed at the cooperative control problem of fixed-wing UAV swarm flights under the airspace constraints of a virtual tube in a complex environment,this paper proposes a behavior-based distributed control method for fixed-wing UAV swarm considering flight safety constraints.Considering the fixed-wing UAV swarm flight problem in complex environment,a virtual tube model based on generator curve is established.The tube keeping,centerline tracking and flight safety behavioral control strategies of the UAV swarm are designed to ensure that the UAV swarm flies along the inside of the virtual tube safety and does not go beyond its boundary.On this basis,a maneuvering decision-making method based on behavioral fusion is proposed to ensure the safe flight of UAV swarm in the restricted airspace.This cooperative control method eliminates the need for respective pre-planned trajectories,reduces communication requirements,and achieves a high level of intelligence.Simulation results show that the proposed behaviorbased UAV swarm cooperative control method is able to make the fixed-wing UAV swarm,which is faster and unable to hover,fly along the virtual tube airspace under various virtual tube shapes and different swarm sizes,and the spacing between the UAVs is larger than the minimum safe distance during the flight. 展开更多

A novel method employing magnetic compound fluid(MCF)wheel was proposed for polishing the outer surface of stainless steel tube.Firstly,a polishing apparatus was constructed.In addition,the distribution of the magnetic field of MCF wheel on the workpiece surface was explored by Maxwell software and Tesla meter,and the relationship between magnetic field distribution and material removal(MR)on the workpiece surface was investigated.Then,MR model was established and proved by the experiment results under specific experiment conditions.Finally,the influence laws of carbonyl iron powder particle size d_(CIP),abrasive particle size d_(AP),magnet speed n_(m),workpiece speed n_(c),and MCF supply amount V on surface roughness R_(a) and reduction rate were investigated through experiments,and the mechanisms of different parameters on surface quality were explored.Results show that the magnetic induction intensity during polishing is positively correlated with the polished profile of the workpiece.The trend of MR simulation is consistent with that of the experiment value,which proves the accuracy of MR model.When the revolution speeds of magnet and workpiece are 200 and 5000 r/min,respectively,and 2 mL MCF slurry containing 50wt%carbonyl iron powder(15μm),12wt%abrasive particle(7μm),3wt%α-cellulose,and 35wt%magnetic fluid was used,the final surface roughness decreases from 0.411μm to 0.007μm.After polishing for 100 min,the reduction rate is 98.297%,demonstrating that this method is appropriate for polishing the outer surface of tube. 展开更多

By combining energy and mass balance equations with heat and mass transfer coefficients and air psychrometric correlations, the model provides insights into the impact of design and operational parameters on the exchanger cooling performance. Validated against an established numerical model, it accurately simulates cooling behavior with a Root Mean Square Deviation of 0.43 - 1.18˚C under varying inlet air conditions. The results show that tube geometry, including equivalent diameter, flatness ratio, and length significantly influences cooling outcomes. Smaller diameters enhance wet-bulb effectiveness but reduce cooling capacity, while increased flatness and length improve both. For example, extending the flatness ratio of a 15 mm diameter, 0.6 m long tube from 1 (circular) to 4 raises the exchange surface area from 0.028 to 0.037 m2, increasing wet-bulb effectiveness from 60% to 71%. Recommended diameters range from 5 mm for tubes under 0.5 m to 1 cm for tubes 0.5 to 1 m in length. Optimal air velocities depend on tube length: 1 m/s for tubes under 0.8 m, 1.5 m/s for lengths of 0.8 to 1.2 m, and up to 2 m/s for longer tubes. This model offers a practical alternative to complex numerical and CFD methods, with potential applications in cooling tower optimization for thermal and nuclear power plants and geothermal heat exchangers. 展开更多

This research investigates the bending response of folded multi-celled tubes(FMTs)fabricated by folded metal sheets.A three-point bending test for FMTs with circular and square sections is designed and introduced.The base numerical models are correlated with physical experiments and a static crashworthiness analysis of six FMT configurations to assess their energy absorption characteristics.The influences of thickness,sectional shape,and load direction on the bending response are studied.Results indicate that increasing the thickness of the tube and radian of the inner tube enhances the crashworthiness performance of FMT,yielding a 20.50%increase in mean crushing force,a 55.53%increase in specific energy absorption,and an 18.05%decrease in peak crushing force compared to traditional multi-celled tubes(TMTs).A theoretical analysis of the specific energy absorption indicates that FMTs outperform TMTs,particularly when the peak crushing force is prominent.This study highlights the innovative and practical potential of FMTs to improve the crashworthiness of thin-walled structures. 展开更多

Multi-cell structures and corrugated tubes illustrate excellent energy absorption capacities.Besides,bamboo with continuously changing contours demonstrates superior impact-resisting capacities.As a result,a bionic multi-cell double corrugated(BMDC)tube,inspired by Buddha bamboo,is investigated to assess whether it is an ideal energy absorber candidate.Compared to a corrugated tube,a BMDC contains an outer structure,an inner structure,and diaphragms,which are like webs bridging the inner and outer structures.A basic numerical model is correlated using a physical experiment,followed by an investigation of BMDC tubes’energy absorption performance under axial loading,considering thickness and mass effects.Results indicate that the EA,MCF,and SEA of a BMDC containing 5 diaphragms(BMDC-5)with a 1.5 mm thickness can improve their respective responses by 112.89,112.89,and 83.32%higher compared to a BMDC with no diaphragm(BMDC-0).In addition,the BMDC-5 with 0.156 kg mass generates the highest EA,MCF,and SEA,which is 79.78%higher than a BMDC-0 with the same mass.The parametric analysis illustrates that diaphragms’amplitude and diameter have a decisive influence on energy absorption characteristics.This study emphasizes that BMDC tubes are innovative and practical,possessing excellent energy absorption performance. 展开更多

The behavior of reinforced concrete(RC)square columns strengthened with self-compacting concrete(SCC)-filled steel tubes under cyclic loading was experimentally investigated.Tests were carried out on eleven reinforced columns and one unreinforced column.The parameters studied for the strengthened columns included axial compression ratio,reinforcement rate,defect rate,strength of SCC,and the section form of a reinforced steel tube.The results show that the steel tube SCC reinforcement method can effectively strengthen RC columns,exert the restraint effect of steel tube,and delay the development of internal concrete cracks.The method can also significantly improve the bearing capacity of RC columns.Regarding ductility,the improvement of the reinforced column is obvious,the deformation resistance of the specimen is enhanced,and the degradation of stiffness and strength is relatively slow,indicating that it has good seismic performance. 展开更多

Damage assessment and fragility curve development for vehicle tires using shock tube experiments

This study presents a fragility curve to assess explosively induced damage to military vehicle tires based on shock tube experiments.To replicate lateral damage scenarios that may occur in real battlefield environments involving missile or bomb detonations,extreme overpressure conditions were generated using a shock tube.The influence of explosive charge mass on tire damage was quantitatively evaluated.Experimental results identified two critical failure thresholds:for loss of pressure,the threshold was 354 kPa peak overpressure and 3052 kPa·ms impulse;for rupture,the values were 485 kPa and 4237 kPa-ms,respectively.The same damage profile was reproduced through finite element analysis(FEA),verifying the reliability of the simulation.A Single Degree of Freedom(SDOF)model and Kingery-Bulmash(K-B)chart were employed to generate pressure-impulse data as a function of standoff distance.These data were applied to a finite element tire model using the BLAST ENHANCED keyword in LS-DYNA.The applied peak overpressures were identical to the experimental values with a 24%-27%difference in impulse.The simulation also captured recurring bead rim separation phenomenon,leading to internal pressure loss consistent with high-speed camera observations from the experiments.The resulting fragility curve clearly defines the threshold conditions for tire damage and provides a standardized damage assessment model applicable to various explosive charge masses and stand-off distances.The proposed model offers a quantitative basis for evaluating tire vulnerability,providing foundational reference data for defense applications.Specifically,the findings are expected to serve as a reliable source for weapon effects analysis and target vulnerability assessments involving wheeled military vehicles. 展开更多
