Recent work analysing magnesium hydrogenation using Reflecting Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy(REELS)and Density Function Theory(DFT)has indicated interfacial polarisation and interstitial hydrogen clustering influe...Recent work analysing magnesium hydrogenation using Reflecting Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy(REELS)and Density Function Theory(DFT)has indicated interfacial polarisation and interstitial hydrogen clustering influence the reaction rate.The site availability model has been modified to include interstitial hydrogen clustering within the site availability factor and interface polarisation using interface treatment.The new model,SAM-CV-S,has demonstrated improved modelling of magnesium hydrogenation across wide operating conditions,such as temperatures from 330 to 400℃and pressures up to 40 bar.This wide applicability makes it a robust model that can be used to simulate bed performance in solid-state hydrogen stores.Thus,the site availability factor successfully combines interstitial hydrogen clustering with thermal resistance effects,which are known to strongly influence metal hydride reactor designs at scale.The next phase of the model is to incorporate a predictive hydrogen capacity method into the model.展开更多

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses of fluoride ion-labelled samples show that PCPT cannot remove the surface film completely due to the low reaction rate. Potentiodynamic polarisation tests demonstrate that PCPT with proper operating parameters,-1.0 V SCE for 5 min with subsequent open circuit potential(OCP) stabilisation in this study, is necessary because it can improve the test reproducibility without affecting the corrosion parameters by unifying the initial surface state. However, PCPT with lower potentials, longer time or no OCP stabilisation has significant effects on the electrochemical corrosion parameters due to the hydrogen absorption under the conditions of this study.展开更多
A novel Whispering-Gallery-Mode (WGM) fibre laser, emitting linearly polarised three-colour light, is demonstrated by pumping and gain coupling with evanescent waves. The pump light is longitudinally coupled into a ...A novel Whispering-Gallery-Mode (WGM) fibre laser, emitting linearly polarised three-colour light, is demonstrated by pumping and gain coupling with evanescent waves. The pump light is longitudinally coupled into a bare optical fibre immersed in a dye solution of lower refractive index. The dye molecules around the bare fibre are excited by the evanescent waves of pump light when they propagate along the fibre in a total internal reflection. When the pump beam within the fibre is a meridian beam, the WGM lasing emission from the fibre laser is a linearly polarised transverse electric wave, while it is a mixed wave of the linearly polarised transverse electric and magnetic waves if the pump beam is a skew beam within the fibre. Because the excited molecules are located within the evanescent field of WGM, a good spatial overlap between the dye gain and the evanescent field leads to a high pumping efficiency and a longer gain distance along the fibre. Once the bare fibre is inserted into three glass capillaries filled with Rhodamine 6G, 610 and 640 dye solutions, respectively, WGM laser oscillations at the wavelengths of 567-575, 605-614 and 656-666 nm occur simultaneously, and a linearly polarised three-colour lasing emission is achieved in a single optical fibre.展开更多

The long-distance axial trapping of ST68 microbubbles (MBs) achieved by DMOT was more stable than that of SMOT. Moreover the axial trapping force measured using the viscous drag method, was depended on the diameter of the particle, the laser power, and the numerical aperture (NA) of the objective lens. The measurement of the axial trapping force and the acquisition of CCD images of trapping effect confirmed that the DMOT showed excellent axial trapping ability than SMOT. A simple and effective method is developed to improve axial trapping effect using the azimuthally polarized beam as trapping beam. This is helpful for the long-distance manipulating of particles especially polarised biological objects in axial direction.展开更多
Glaciecola polaris strain ARK149, a Gram-negative bacterium from Arctic seas, was used to derive lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and the effect of the LPS inducing some innate immunity parameters was investigated in Japan...Glaciecola polaris strain ARK149, a Gram-negative bacterium from Arctic seas, was used to derive lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and the effect of the LPS inducing some innate immunity parameters was investigated in Japanese sea bass, Lateolabrax japonicus. The results showed that the LPS could enhance the phagocytosis activity, lysozyme activity, and bacteriolytic activity in L.japonicus, significantly (P〈0.05) at 1, 7, 14, 21, 28, and 35 d after LPS-injection. The indexes of three parameters increased to the peak of value at 28th d post LPS-injection. Moreover, RT-PCR analysis suggested that LPS significantly up-regulated the expression of both IL-8 and hepcidin in several tissues. These data suggest that the LPS extracted from Glaciecola polaris strain ARK149 can induce innate immunity in L. japonicus.展开更多

Both theoretical and simulated results reveal that the absorber has a distinct absorption point with direction selectivity at 7.48 GHz, which is related to the resonance of the metamaterial and is not influenced by the polarisation. The retrieved impedance indicates that the impedance of the absorber can be tuned to approximatively match the impedance of the free space on one side and not to match the impedance of the free space on the other side. This design can result in the minimal reflectance, the minimal transmission and the highest absorbance at the absorption frequency. The distribution of the power loss indicates that the absorber is an excellent electromagnetic wave collector: the wave is first trapped and reinforced in certain specific locations, and then mostly consumed. The distribution of the surface current is consistent with the design, the retrieved impedance and the distribution of the power loss. This absorber may have applications in many scientific and technological areas.展开更多
SrBi4-xFexTi4015 (SBFT-x) thin films (x = 0.00, 0.05, 0.08, 0.15) have been synthesized on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si (100) substrates by sol-gel method. This paper finds that Fe-doping does not change the crystal structure ...SrBi4-xFexTi4015 (SBFT-x) thin films (x = 0.00, 0.05, 0.08, 0.15) have been synthesized on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si (100) substrates by sol-gel method. This paper finds that Fe-doping does not change the crystal structure of SrBi4Ti4015 (SBTi). The coercive filed (Ec) and remnant polarisation (Pr) increase at first, then decrease with the increase of Fe doping content. At a maximum applied field of 229 kV/cm, the 2Pr reaches a maximum value of 91.1μC/cm2 at x = 0.05 and the corresponding Ec is 72 kV/cm. The 2Pr increases by about 260% and the Ec decreases by about 6%, respectively. Obviously, the ferroelectric property of SrBi4Ti4015 is greatly enhanced by Fe doping. The fatigueendurance characteristic of the SBFT-0.05 is not improved. After 1.1× 10^9 read/write cycles at a frequency of 50 kHz, the nonvolatile polarisations (Pnv = P* - P^) decreased about 48% of its initial value.展开更多

The bond polarisab...We have studied the temporal bond polarisabilities of para-nitroaniline from the Raman intensities by the algorithm proposed by Wu et al. in 1987 (Tian B, Wu G, Liu G 1987 J. Chem. Phys. 87 7300). The bond polarisabilities provide much information concerning the electronic structure of the non-resonant Raman excited virtual state. At the initial moment by the 514.5 nm excitation, the tendency of the excited electrons (mapped out by the bond polarisabilities) is to spread to the molecular periphery, and the electronic structure of the Raman virtual state is close to the pseudoquinonoidic state. When the final stage of relaxation is approached, the bond polarisabilities of those peripheral bonds relax faster than those closer to the molecular core, the phenyl ring. The molecule is in the benzenoidic form as demonstrated by the bond polarisabilities after relaxation.展开更多

In this paper we introduce methods for approximating local standard time in the Northern Hemisphere using Polaris and the Big Dipper as well as alternative reference stars, and describe in detail how to construct a de...In this paper we introduce methods for approximating local standard time in the Northern Hemisphere using Polaris and the Big Dipper as well as alternative reference stars, and describe in detail how to construct a device we call a dipperclock to facilitate this process. An alternative method which does not require a dipperclock is also discussed. Ways of constructing dipperclocks which glow in the dark are presented. The accuracy of dipperclocks is examined, both theoretically and through field testing. A java program is provided for creating dipperclocks customized to a particular year-long time period and place to get improved accuracy. Basic astronomical definitions and justifications of the results are provided. We also discuss the use of dipperclocks to find longitude and latitude.展开更多

In photonic crystal slab(PCS)structures,the bound states in the continuum(BICs)and circularly polarised states(dubbed C-points)are critical topological polarisation singularities in momentum space that have garnered s...In photonic crystal slab(PCS)structures,the bound states in the continuum(BICs)and circularly polarised states(dubbed C-points)are critical topological polarisation singularities in momentum space that have garnered significant attention owing to their novel topological and optical properties.In this study,we engineered a novel PCS imager featuring two C-points with opposite chirality through symmetry breaking,resulting in maximal asymmetric transmission responses characterised by near-unity circular dichroism(CD)values.By harnessing the chiral selectivity of the C-points,a high-CD PCS imager can provide two sets of optical transfer functions(OTFs)to facilitate both edge detection and bright-field imaging.Notably,one set of OTFs was finely tuned to a Lorentzian line shape to achieve perfect edge detection.We developed a multifunctional imaging system by integrating a PCS imager into a traditional optical system.Both theoretical and experimental demonstrations confirmed that this system provides bright-field and edge-enhanced images with micrometer-scale resolution.Furthermore,these two independent functions can be easily switched by altering the circular polarisation state of the light source.展开更多

A range of partial top full bottom electrodes are used to explore the use of bi-polar Polarisation-Electricfield(PeE)measurements to quantify recoverable energy(Wrec),energy loss(W_(loss))and the efficiency(h)of ferro...A range of partial top full bottom electrodes are used to explore the use of bi-polar Polarisation-Electricfield(PeE)measurements to quantify recoverable energy(Wrec),energy loss(W_(loss))and the efficiency(h)of ferroelectric BaTiO_(3)ceramics.The values obtained are dependent on the ratio of sample thickness(S)and top contact radius(r).With increasing S/r from 0.17 to 1.96 the P-E responses become increasingly distorted and broader.Measurements show Wrec increases by a factor of~1.4 but Wloss increases by a factor of~7 with h decreasing from~29%to 8%.Finite element modelling was used to simulate the experimental set-up of the sample/electrode arrangements using the Jiles-Atherton model to replicate the ferroelectric behaviour of BaTiO_(3).These models demonstrate the experimentally applied electricfield using a simple geometric correction for sample thickness is an underestimation of the actualfield experienced by the material under the top contact at high S/r values.We stress the importance of reporting the contact sizes and thicknesses of samples when using PeE measurements to assess Wrec,W_(loss)andηin non-linear dielectric materials.This will allow a fairer comparison of performances between various types of materials being considered for high-energy-density ceramic capacitors.展开更多

文摘A range of partial top full bottom electrodes are used to explore the use of bi-polar Polarisation-Electricfield(PeE)measurements to quantify recoverable energy(Wrec),energy loss(W_(loss))and the efficiency(h)of ferroelectric BaTiO_(3)ceramics.The values obtained are dependent on the ratio of sample thickness(S)and top contact radius(r).With increasing S/r from 0.17 to 1.96 the P-E responses become increasingly distorted and broader.Measurements show Wrec increases by a factor of~1.4 but Wloss increases by a factor of~7 with h decreasing from~29%to 8%.Finite element modelling was used to simulate the experimental set-up of the sample/electrode arrangements using the Jiles-Atherton model to replicate the ferroelectric behaviour of BaTiO_(3).These models demonstrate the experimentally applied electricfield using a simple geometric correction for sample thickness is an underestimation of the actualfield experienced by the material under the top contact at high S/r values.We stress the importance of reporting the contact sizes and thicknesses of samples when using PeE measurements to assess Wrec,W_(loss)andηin non-linear dielectric materials.This will allow a fairer comparison of performances between various types of materials being considered for high-energy-density ceramic capacitors.
