According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution affects millions of people worldwide. Hundreds of thousands of deaths each year and a range of diseases, particularly among vulnerable groups (i.e., children, the elderly, and people with special medical conditions), are attributed to air pollution. These effects are not always caused by single pollutant in the air; rather, they are considered consequences of the multi-pollutants to which people are simultaneously exposed.展开更多

Considering that PM(2.5)is highly heterogeneous with regional disparity and seasonal variation, we investigated whether PM(2.5)exposure induced neuronal apoptosis and synaptic injuries in a season-dependent manner. The results indicated that PM(2.5)altered the expression of apoptosis-related proteins(mainly bax and bcl-2), activated caspase-3 and caused neuronal apoptosis. Additionally, PM(2.5)decreased the levels of synaptic structural protein postsynaptic density(PSD-95) and synaptic functional protein N-methyl-D-aspartate(NMDA) receptor subunit(NR2B) expression. These effects occurred in a season-dependent manner, and PM(2.5)collected from the winter showed the strongest changes. Furthermore, the effect was coupled with the inhibition of phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2(p-ERK1/2) and phosphorylated c AMP-response element binding protein(p-CREB). Based on the findings, we analyzed the correlations between the chemical composition of PM(2.5)samples and the biological effects, and confirmed that winter PM(2.5)played a major role in causing neuronal apoptosis and synaptic injuries among different season samples.展开更多

The objective of this paper is to evaluate the impacts of aerosol direct effects on air aualitv over the southern Hebei cities, as well as the im0acts when considering those effects on source apportionment using three dimensional air quality models. The WRF/Chem model was applied over the East Asia and northern China at 36 and 12 km horizontal grid resolutions, respectively, for the period of January 2013, with two sets of simulations with or without aerosol-meteorology feedbacks. The source contributions of power plants, industrial, domestic, transportation, and agriculture are evaluated using the Brute-Force Method (BFM) under the two simulation configurations. Our results indicate that, although the increases in PM2.5 concentrations due to those effects over the three southern Hebei cities are only 3%-9% on monthly average they are much more significant under high PM2.5 Ioadmgs (-50 gg.m - when PM25 concentrations are higher than 400μg.m^-3). When considering the aerosol feedbacks, the contributions of industrial and domestic sources assessed using the BFM will obviously increase (e.g., from 30% 34% to 32%-37% for industrial), especiallY3under high PM2.5 loadings (e.g., from 36%-44% to 43%-47% for domestic when PM2.5〉400μg·m^-3). Our results imply that the aerosol direct effects should not be ignored during severe pollution episodes, especially in short-term source apportionment using the BFM.展开更多

Its performance was compared with that of a light scattering based optical particle sizer in a field study and in controlled lab based experiments using polydisperse dolomite powder as test aerosol. The impactor's optimum nozzle configuration had a cutoff size of 2.51 μm (aero- dynamic diameter) at an operating flow rate of 215 L/rain with a pressure drop of 0.35 kPa across the impactor stage. Because the apparent particle density of an ambient aerosol depends on the physical properties and the chemical composition of the particles, the PM2.5 mass concentration was measured with an optical particle sizer and an inertial impactor over a weekday and a weekend day in a field study during which the effective particle shape factor and density were in tandem modified in order to com- pare the results from the two sampling techniques. The correlation of the two instrument results tended towards 1:1 with increasing values of shape factor (irregular shaped) and effective particle density. This observation was supported through chemical investigations of the collected mass, which showed a higher percentage contribution from elements which are mostly of crustal nature (namely, Ca, Fe, and Mg).展开更多
