Sparse-view phase-contrast and attenuation-based CT reconstruction utilizing model-driven deep learning

Grating-based X-ray phase-contrast imaging enhances the contrast of imaged objects,particularly soft tissues.However,the radiation dose in computed tomography(CT)is generally excessive owing to the complex collection scheme.Sparse-view CT collection reduces the radiation dose,but with reduced resolution and reconstructed artifacts particularly in analytical reconstruction methods.Recently,deep learning has been employed in sparse-view CT reconstruction and achieved stateof-the-art results.Nevertheless,its low generalization performance and requirement for abundant training datasets have hindered the practical application of deep learning in phase-contrast CT.In this study,a CT model was used to generate a substantial number of simulated training datasets,thereby circumventing the need for experimental datasets.By training a network with simulated training datasets,the proposed method achieves high generalization performance in attenuationbased CT and phase-contrast CT,despite the lack of sufficient experimental datasets.In experiments utilizing only half of the CT data,our proposed method obtained an image quality comparable to that of the filtered back-projection algorithm with full-view projection.The proposed method simultaneously addresses two challenges in phase-contrast three-dimensional imaging,namely the lack of experimental datasets and the high exposure dose,through model-driven deep learning.This method significantly accelerates the practical application of phase-contrast CT. 展开更多

Cerebral blood flow volume measurements of the carotid artery and ipsilateral branches using two-dimensional phase-contrast magnetic resonance angiography

The optimal velocity encoding of phase-contrast magnetic resonance angiography (PC MRA) in measuring cerebral blood flow volume (BFV) ranges from 60 to 80 cm/s. To verify the accuracy of two-dimensional (2D) PC MRA, the present study localized the region of interest at blood vessels of the neck using PC MRA based on three-dimensional time-of-flight sequences, and the velocity encoding was set to 80 cm/s. Results of the measurements showed that the error rate was 7.0±6.0% in the estimation of BFV in the internal carotid artery, the external carotid artery and the ipsilateral common carotid artery. There was no significant difference, and a significant correlation in BFV between internal carotid artery + external carotid artery and ipsilateral common carotid artery. In addition, the BFV of the common carotid artery was correlated with that of the ipsilateral internal carotid artery. The main error was attributed to the external carotid artery and its branches. Therefore, after selecting the appropriate scanning parameters and protocols, 2D PC MRA is more accurate in the determination of BFV in the carotid arteries. 展开更多

This paper gives theoretical analysis of visibility of fringes, which is influenced by distances, temporal and spatial coherence of source, in hard x-ray differential phase-contrast imaging with microfocus x-ray source. According to the character of longitudinal periodicity of the interferogram, the setup is insensitive to mechanical drift and vibrations. The effect of temporal coherence of x-ray source is investigated and its related bandwidth is derived. Based on the theory of partially coherent light, it shows that the requirement for the spatial coherence of x-ray source is not strict and can be met by the general microfocus x-ray tube for x-ray differential phase-contrast imaging. 展开更多

In-line phase-contrast computed tomography(IL-PC-CT) imaging is a new physical and biochemical imaging method.IL-PC-CT has advantages compared to absorption CT when imaging soft tissues. In practical applications, ring artifacts which will reduce the image quality are commonly encountered in IL-PC-CT, and numerous correction methods exist to either pre-process the sinogram or post-process the reconstructed image. In this study, we develop an IL-PC-CT reconstruction method based on anisotropic total variation(TV) minimization. Using this method, the ring artifacts are corrected during the reconstruction process. This method is compared with two methods: a sinogram preprocessing correction technique based on wavelet-FFT filter and a reconstruction method based on isotropic TV. The correction results show that the proposed method can reduce visible ring artifacts while preserving the liver section details for real liver section synchrotron data. 展开更多

The results revealed that the cerebrospinal fluid peak flow velocity and peak flow rate in the systolic phase were significantly greater than those in the diastolic phase at the same level in the subarachnoid space of the cervical spinal canal. The ventral peak flow velocity and peak flow rate were significantly greater than the post-lateral peak flow velocity and flow rate, while there were no differences between left and right post-lateral subarachnoid peak velocity and flow rate. Moreover, there were no significant differences in peak flow velocity and peak flow rate between the systolic and diastolic phases, ventral, right post-lateral or left post-lateral peak flow velocity and peak flow rate at the same level in the subarachnoid space of the cervical spinal canal among different age groups (18 24, 25 34, 35-44, ≥45 years). 展开更多

Optimal velocity encoding during measurement of cerebral blood flow volume using phase-contrast magnetic resonance angiography

This study investigated the effect of velocity encoding on measurement of brain blood flow and blood volume of inflow and outflow using phase-contrast magnetic resonance angiography. A single two-dimensional phase-contrast magnetic resonance angiography slice was applied perpendicular to the internal carotid artery and the vertebral artery at C2 level. For each subject, the velocity encoding was set from 30 to 90 cm/s with an interval of 10 cm/s for a total of seven settings. Various velocity encodings greatly affected blood flow volume, maximal blood flow velocity and mean blood flow velocity in the internal carotid artery, but did not significantly affect vertebral arteries and jugular veins. When velocity encoding was 60-80 cm/s, the inflow blood volume was 655 _+ 118 mL/min, and the outflow volume was 506 _+ 186 mL/min. The ratio of outflow/inflow was steady at 0.78-0.83, and there was no aliasing in any of the images. These findings suggest that velocity encodings of 60 80 cm/s should be selected during measurement of cerebral blood flow volume using phase-contrast magnetic resonance angiography. 展开更多

Effects of Tube Voltage on Phase-Contrast Imaging for Different Microfocus X-Ray Tubes

In the past decade, phase-contrast imaging (PCI) has become a hot research with an increased improvement of the image contrast with respect to conventional absorption radiography. In this paper, effects of tube voltage (kVp) on propagation-based phase-contrast imaging have been investigated with two types of microfocus x-ray tubes, a conventional sealed x-ray tube with the focal spot size of 13 - 20 μm and an open x-ray tube with minimum focal spot size less than 2 μm. A cooled x-ray CCD detector with the pixel size of 24 μm was used to acquire digital images. Two thin plastic sheets with different thickness were used as radiography phantoms. Two different phenomena were observed for the two x-ray tubes. For the open tube, phase-contrast effect has a slight drop with the increasing of tube voltage, however, it is opposite for the sealed tube. A further investigation indicates that the variation of focal spot size causes the abnormal result for the sealed tube. It also shows that phase-contrast effect is more sensitive to focal spot size than tube voltage. 展开更多

Imaging blood vessels is of importance for determining the vascular distribution of organs and tumors.Phase-contrast X-ray imaging can reveal the vessels in much more detail than conventional X-ray absorption method.Visualizing murine liver microvasculature ex vivo with phase-contrast X-ray imaging was performed at Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility.Barium sulfate and physiological saline were used as contrast agents for the blood vessels.Blood vessels of <Φ20μm could be detected by replacing resident blood with physiological saline or barium sulfate.An entire branch of the portal vein (from the main axial portal vein to the ninth generation of branching) could be captured in a single phase-contrast image.It is demonstrated that selective angiography based on phase contrast X-ray imaging,with a physiological material of low Z elements (such as saline) being the contrast agent,is a viable imaging strategy.Further efforts will be focused on using the technique to image tumor angiogenesis. 展开更多

Rationale and Objectives: Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations are discussed with respect to their potential for quality assurance of flow quantification using commercial software for the evaluation of magnetic resonance phase contrast angiography (PCA) data. Materials and Methods: Magnetic resonance phase contrast angiography data was evaluated with the Nova software. CFD simulations were performed on that part of the vessel system where the flow behavior was unexpected or non-reliable. The CFD simulations were performed with in-house written software. Results: The numerical CFD calculations demonstrated that under reasonable boundary conditions, defined by the PCA velocity values, the flow behavior within the critical parts of the vessel system can be correctly reproduced. Conclusion: CFD simulations are an important extension to commercial flow quantification tools with regard to quality assurance. 展开更多

目的探讨磁共振相位对比电影成像(cine phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging,Cine PC MRI)相关参数预测肝硬化门静脉高压食管胃底静脉曲张破裂出血(cirrhotic portal hypertension-esophagogastric variceal bleeding,CPH-EVB)... 目的探讨磁共振相位对比电影成像(cine phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging,Cine PC MRI)相关参数预测肝硬化门静脉高压食管胃底静脉曲张破裂出血(cirrhotic portal hypertension-esophagogastric variceal bleeding,CPH-EVB)介入术预后不良风险的价值。方法选取2021年1月—2024年1月河北省保定市第二中心医院收治的CPH-EVB患者102例作为研究对象进行前瞻性研究,均于介入术治疗前行Cine PC MRI检查,并于术后随访12个月,失访1例,依据患者预后分为预后良好组70例、预后不良组31例,比较2组临床资料及Cine PC MRI定量参数[门静脉内径(portal vein diameter,Dpv)、门静脉横截面积(portal vein cross-sectional area,Apv)、门静脉血流速度(portal vein blood flow velocity,Vpv)、门静脉血流量(portal vein blood flow volume,Qpv)],采用点二列相关性分析各指标与病情指标的相关性,Logistic回归分析确定CPH-EVB介入术预后的影响因素,分析Cine PC MRI定量参数(Dpv、Apv、Vpv、Qpv)与CPH-EVB介入术预后的关系,绘制受试者工作特征(receiver operating characteristic,ROC)曲线,计算曲线下面积(area under curve,AUC)分析各指标对CPH-EVB介入术预后的预测价值。结果预后不良组Child-Pugh分级C级占比(70.97%)、出血量≥500 mL占比(67.74%)高于预后良好组(45.71%、40.00%),Dpv[(1.58±0.13)cm]、Apv[(2.17±0.15)cm^(2)]高于预后良好组[(1.47±0.10)cm、(2.05±0.11)cm^(2)],Vpv[(6.87±1.14)cm/s]、Qpv[(15.19±3.61)cm^(2)/s]低于预后良好组[(8.53±1.59)cm/s、(18.76±4.08)cm^(2)/s],差异有统计学意义(P<0.05)。相关性分析结果显示,Dpv、Apv与Child-Pugh分级(r=0.669、0.681)、出血量(r=0.674、0.686)呈正相关(均P<0.001),Vpv、Qpv与Child-Pugh分级(r=―0.702、―0.710)、出血量(r=―0.715、―0.721)呈负相关(均P<0.001)。Logistic回归分析结果显示,Dpv(OR=1.897,95%CI:1.335~2.697)、Apv(OR=2.002,95%CI:1.418~2.826)、Vpv(OR=0.695,95%CI:0.507~0.953)、Qpv(OR=0.756,95%CI:0.589~0.971)是CPH-EVB介入术预后不良风险的独立影响因素(P<0.05);绘制ROC曲线分析结果显示,Dpv、Apv、Vpv、Qpv联合预测CPH-EVB介入术预后不良风险的AUC为0.924,高于各参数单独预测(0.758、0.730、0.765、0.783,均P<0.05)。结论Cine PC MRI定量参数(Dpv、Apv、Vpv、Qpv)与CPH-EVB患者介入术后预后及病情指标(Child-Pugh分级、出血量)有关,各指标联合可为临床预测CPH-EVB介入术后预后提供一定参考。 展开更多

Objectives To reveal the relationship of brain motion and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow by phase-contrast cine MRI, and to evaluate this technique in differentiating between arachnoid cysts and subarachnoid space enlargement. Methods Using a phase-contrast cine MRI pulse sequence, we measured brain motion and CSF flow during the cardiac cycle in 10 healthy volunteers and 10 patients with MRI-suspected arachnoid cyst or subarachnoid space enlargement. CSF stroke volume curve was illustrated according to flow quantification, and time-signal intensity curve was traced. The two curves were compared. Results This study showed that brain motion was due to the volume difference between arterial and venous blood flow during a cardiac cycle, and thus drives CSF pulsation. Arachnoid cysts and subarachnoid space enlargement carried different curve patterns, demonstrating that phase-contrast MRI and flow quantification can be a useful and reliable technique for non-invasive evaluation of brain motion and CSF flow. Conclusion Arachnoid cysts can be successfully differentiated using phase-contrast cine MRI from subarachnoid space enlargement. 展开更多

Propagation-based phase-contrast imaging was simulated based on paraxial Fresnel-Kirchoff diffraction integral and spherical wave illumination. Under a developed micro-CT system parameters, the effects of focal-spot size and imaging geometry on phase-contrast imaging have been investigated using a 2-mm-thickness polystyrene edge phantom. An equivalent mono-energy was used to substitute the polychromatic spectrum of the micro-focus X-ray source. To consider effects of focal-spot size and detector resolution, the obtained phase-contrast image with an ideal point source was convolved with source intensity distribution and point spread function of detector. Simulations show reasonable influences of the two parameters which are in good agreement with experimental results. 展开更多

目的探讨增强CT直方图(CTH)定量参数在甲状腺良恶性结节鉴别诊断中的价值。方法回顾性分析2021年1月至2022年12月东莞市人民医院收治86例经手术病理确诊的甲状腺结节患者(恶性组44例,良性组42例)的临床资料,所有患者均行双期增强CT检查... 目的探讨增强CT直方图(CTH)定量参数在甲状腺良恶性结节鉴别诊断中的价值。方法回顾性分析2021年1月至2022年12月东莞市人民医院收治86例经手术病理确诊的甲状腺结节患者(恶性组44例,良性组42例)的临床资料,所有患者均行双期增强CT检查。基于CT平扫、动脉期及静脉期增强扫描图像,分别勾画甲状腺结节的感兴趣区(ROI);采用医学影像分析软件MaZda提取ROI内CT直方图的一阶统计定量参数,包括平均值、方差、偏度、峰度及百分位数(Perc.01%、Perc.10%、Perc.50%、Perc.90%、Perc.99%)。采用logistic回归和受试者工作特征曲线(ROC)评价CTH定量参数及联合参数对甲状腺良恶性结节的鉴别诊断效能。结果甲状腺结节恶性组与良性组动脉期的方差、偏度、峰度、Perc.50%、Perc.90%、Perc.99%以及静脉期的偏度、Perc.50%差异有统计学意义(P<0.05)。动脉期峰度、Perc.50%、Perc.90%及静脉期Perc.50%可作为甲状腺恶性结节的独立预测因子(P<0.05);且4者联合诊断效能较佳(AUC=0.714)。结论增强CT直方图定量参数可为甲状腺良恶性结节的鉴别诊断提供辅助参考。 展开更多

目的探究多层螺旋电子计算机断层扫描(MSCT)多期增强扫描在儿童肾肿瘤诊断中的应用价值。方法选取本院自2020年1月至2024年10月收治的80例肾肿瘤患儿为研究对象,均行MSCT多期增强扫描,比较各时期CT值、增强百分比、相对肾皮质校正CT值,... 目的探究多层螺旋电子计算机断层扫描(MSCT)多期增强扫描在儿童肾肿瘤诊断中的应用价值。方法选取本院自2020年1月至2024年10月收治的80例肾肿瘤患儿为研究对象,均行MSCT多期增强扫描,比较各时期CT值、增强百分比、相对肾皮质校正CT值,分析其对肾肿瘤良恶性的诊断价值。结果经临床和病理学诊断确定80例儿童肾肿瘤患者中,56例恶性肿瘤纳入恶性组,24例良性肿瘤纳入良性组。两组皮髓质期CT值、肾实质期CT值、排泄期CT值、皮髓质期增强百分比、排泄期增强百分比、平扫期相对肾皮质校正CT值、皮髓质期相对肾皮质校正CT值、肾皮质期相对肾皮质校正CT值比较均无显著性差异(P>0.05),良性组平扫期CT值、排泄期相对肾皮质校正CT值显著高于恶性组(P<0.05),肾实质期增强百分比显著低于恶性组(P<0.05);受试者工作曲线(ROC)曲线结果显示,单一指标诊断肾肿瘤良恶性时,肾实质期增强百分比诊断肾肿瘤良恶性的受试者工作曲线下面积(AUC)最高为0.723,临界值114.56、敏感度66.67%,特异度75.00%,联合诊断时,联合诊断肾肿瘤良恶性的AUC最高为0.820,敏感度79.17%,特异度73.21%,结论MSCT多期增强扫描图像中的平扫期CT值、肾实质期增强百分比、排泄期相对肾皮质校正CT值对肾肿瘤诊断具有良好的价值,联合诊断能提高诊断的敏感度。 展开更多

Quantitative Measurements of Red Blood Cell Indices Using Spectroscopic Differential Phase-Contrast Microscopy

Red blood cell(RBC)indices serve as clinically important parameters for diagnosing various blood-related diseases.Conventional hematology analyzers provide the highly accurate detection of RBC indices but require large blood volumes(>1 mL),and the results are bulk mean values averaged over a large number of RBCs.Moreover,they do not provide quantitative information related to the morphological and chemical alteration of RBCs at the single-cell level.Recently,quantitative phase imaging(QPI)methods have been introduced as viable detection platforms for RBC indices.However,coherent QPI methods are built on complex optical setups and suffer from coherent speckle noise,which limits their detection accuracy and precision.Here,we present spectroscopic differential phase-contrast(sDPC)microscopy as a platform for measuring RBC indices.sDPC is a computational microscope that produces color-dependent phase images with higher spatial resolution and reduced speckle noise compared to coherent QPIs.Using these spectroscopic phase images and computational algorithms,RBC indices can be extracted with high accuracy.We experimentally demonstrate that sDPC enables the high-accuracy measurement of the mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration,mean corpuscular volume,mean corpuscular hemoglobin,red cell distribution width,hematocrit,hemoglobin concentration,and RBC count with errors smaller than 7%as compared to a clinical hematology analyzer based on flow cytometry(XN-2000;Sysmex,Kobe,Japan).We further validate the clinical utility of the sDPC method by measuring and comparing the RBC indices of the control and anemic groups against those obtained using the clinical hematology analyzer. 展开更多

Employing the approximation theory based on refraction and the definition of the total pointspread-function of the imaging system, the variation in the edge contrast of simple model samples is discussed with different source-to-sample and sample-to-detector distances, which actually means different spatial resolutions of the imaging system. The experiments were carried out with the Beamline 4W1A imaging setup at the Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Facility for simple model and insect samples. The results show that to obtain clear phase-contrast images of biologic tissues for the X-ray in-line imaging setup, with determined parameters such as the size of the X-ray source, the pixel size of the detector and the fixed source-to-sample distance, there is a range of optimized sample-to-detector distances. The analysis method discussed in this article can be helpful in optimizing the setup of X-ray in-line phase-contrast imaging. 展开更多
