All VPs were added to different water matrices at a concentration of 10 mg/L. Rejections of VPs and water flux were measured. The rejection increased with increase of molecular weight. The highest rejections were obtained with RO membranes (LFC-1, XLE) and tight NF (NF90) membrane. In general, the rejection of VPs was higher in model water and tap water than in Milli-Q water, but the water flux was lower. This was mainly explained by ion adsorption inside the membranes pores. Narrower pore size counteracted the effect of presence of low concentration of natural organic matter (NOM) in tap water. The NOM was assumed to enhance the adsorption of VPs onto membrane surface, increased the size exclusion and electrostatic repulsion also appeared during the transport. Investigated water matrices had influence on water flux decline due to their complexity.展开更多

This study investigated the removal of three widely detected and abundant pharmaceuticals, namely, ibuprofen(IBU), diclofenac(DC), and sulfadiazine(SDZ), by two magnetic ion-exchange resins. The adsorption kinetics of the three adsorbates onto both resins was relatively fast and followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. Despite the different pore structures of the two resins, similar adsorption patterns of DC and SDZ were observed, implying the existence of an ion-exchange mechanism. IBU demonstrated a combination of interactions during the adsorption process. These interactions were dependent on the specific surface area and functional groups of the resin. The adsorption isotherm fittings verified the differences in the behavior of the three pharmaceuticals on the two magnetic ion-exchange resins. The presence of Cl-and SO2-4suppressed the adsorption amount, but with different inhibition levels for different adsorbates. This work facilitates the understanding of the adsorption behavior and mechanism of pharmaceuticals on magnetic ion-exchange resins. The results will expand the application of magnetic ion-exchange resins to the removal of pharmaceuticals in waters.展开更多

However, most studies focused more on microalgae removal performance, its defensive response to the Ph As during wastewater treatment remains unexplored. Herein, microalgal three defensive systems have been investigated in synthetic wastewater, with six Ph As as the typical drug. Results show that Ph As could bind to EPS, and this action in turn could help to alleviate the direct toxicity of Ph As to microalgae. Subsequently, the physiological analyses revealed the increase of superoxide dismutase(SOD), catalase(CAT), and peroxidase(POD) activities, potentially reducing the oxidative stress induced by Ph As. Furthermore, the enzyme activities of cytochrome P450(CYP450) and glutathione-S-transferase(GST) were significantly upregulated after exposure to SMX, CIP and BPA, followed by a significant decrease in biodegradation rates after the addition of CYP450 inhibitors, suggesting that the biotransformation and detoxification of Ph As occurred. Meanwhile, molecular docking further revealed that CYP450 could bind with Ph As via hydrogen bond and hydrophobic interaction, which proved their abilities to be metabolized and form transformation products in microalgae. These findings provide an advancing understanding of microalgae technologies to improve the treatment of wastewater contaminated with Ph As.展开更多

Five medicine compounds, one illicit drug, and its metabolite were the higher measured content using analytical improvements tailored to identify and quantify organic compounds in low water content. The use of SPE cartridges followed by liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS) points out the Guavirutuba tributary as the primary water pollution source with higher concentrations in 2011 for pharmaceuticals, cocaine, and benzoylecgonine (metabolite) in the range of 6.7 ± 0.9 ng L-1 to 27.386 ± 142 ng L-1. The Jaceguay stream also located in Guarapiranga was the most preserved area and provided analytical values correspondent which lowered contamination content. Such concentrations mean a possible and feasible water restoration target. The most common compounds (above 90% samples) were: caffeine, atenolol, carbamazepine, cocaine, and benzoylecgonine. The integrated risk index for aquatic chemical pollution (IRICAP) confirms the higher contamination near Guavirutuba stream and the lower near the Jaceguay stream. Published results of cocaine and benzoylecgonine content in Guarapiranga basin corroborated with the analytical results.展开更多

In recent studies, pharmaceuticals have also been found in aquatic plants, fish tissues and plasma of shark bulls. Pharmaceuticals that were detected as indicated in published literature, included steroids, prescription drugs such as antibiotics, anti-depressants, anti-inflammatory drugs, hormones and over the counter (OTC) drugs. We conducted a monitoring study to detect the presence of pharmaceuticals in East fork of the Stones River located in Rutherford County in Middle Tennessee. East Fork Stones River is a six (6) order river that drains a large portion of Rutherford County including Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Grab water samples were collected from Stones River for three seasons: (summer and fall of 2014 and 2015 and winter of 2015 and 2016) each year. Water quality parameters were also determined in situ using Eureka Water ProbesTM multi-parameter sondes. Water samples were analyzed for the presence of pharmaceutical compounds using GC-MS. Chemical Abstract Service Registry Numbers (CASRN or CAS) for detected pharmaceuticals were identified. Pharmaceuticals detected included those used for treatment of chronic alcoholism (Disulfiram: CAS # 97-77-8), a compound (Thiazolidine: CAS # 504-78-9) in the drug Thiazolidinedione which is used for the treatment of type II diabetes, a compound associated with the prevention of anti-inflammatory conditions (Methyl palmitate: CAS # 112-39-0), and emollient in skincare (Undecane: CAS # 1120-21-4). While the quantitative concentrations of these drugs were not determined in this study, their qualitative presence in surface water is noteworthy.展开更多

The results will expand the application of magnetic ion-exchange resins to the removal of pharmaceuticals in waters.

文摘Recently, the use of microalgae for bioremediation of pharmaceuticals(Ph As) has attracted increasing interest. These findings provide an advancing understanding of microalgae technologies to improve the treatment of wastewater contaminated with Ph As.

文摘The removal of eight typical pharmaceuticals(Ph ACs)(i.e.,ibuprofen(IBU),ketoprofen(KET),diclofenac(DIC),sulfadiazine(SD),sulfamethoxazole(SMX),trimethoprim(TMP),ciprofloxacin(CIP)and enoxacin(ENO))in sulfur-driven autotrophic denitrification(Sd AD)process were firstly investigated via long-term operation of bioreactor coupled with batch tests. The results indicated that IBU and KET can be effectively removed(removal efficiency>50%)compared to other six Ph ACs in Sd AD bioreactor.Biodegradation was the primary removal route for IBU and KET with the specific biodegradation rates of 5.3±0.718.1±1.8μg g^(-1)-VSS d^(-1)at initial concentrations of 25-200μg/L.The biotransformation intermediates of IBU and KET were examined, and the results indicated that IBU was biotransformed to three intermediates via hydroxylation and carboxylation.KET biotransformation could be initiated from the reduction of the keto group following with a series of oxidation/reduction reactions, and five intermediates of KET were observed in this study. The microbial community composition in the system was markedly shifted when long-term exposure to Ph ACs.However, the functional microbes(e.g.,genus Thiobacillus)showed high tolerance to Ph ACs,resulting in the high efficiency for Ph ACs,N and S removal during long-term Sd AD reactor operation. The findings provide better insight into Ph ACs removal in Sd AD process, especially IBU and KET,and open up an innovative opportunity for the treatment of Ph ACs-laden wastewater using sulfur-mediated biological process.

文摘Thirteen new fluorine-containing drugs, which have been granted approval by the US Food and Drug Administration(FDA)in 2020,are profiled in this review.Therapeutic areas of these new fluorinated pharmaceuticals include medicines and diagnostic agents for Cushing's disease, neurofibromatosis, migraine,Alzheimer's disease, myelodysplastic syndromes, hereditary angioedema attacks, and various cancers.Molecules of these approved drugs feature aromatic fluorine(Ar-F)(11 compounds),aromatic Ar-CF_(3)(1),aliphatic CHF(1)and CF_(2)(1)groups.For each compound,we provide a spectrum of biological activity, medicinal chemistry discovery, and synthetic approaches.
文摘The pharmaceutical compounds were analyzed in 14 sampling sites and pointed out the pollution sources related to raw sewage input and urban drainage discharge. Published results of cocaine and benzoylecgonine content in Guarapiranga basin corroborated with the analytical results.

文摘Passive sampling technology has good application prospects for monitoring trace pollutants in aquatic environments.Further research on the sampling mechanism of this technology is essential to improve the measurement accuracy and extend the application scope of this approach. In this study, adsorption and permeation experiments were performed to investigate the sorption and mass transfer properties of five chiral pharmaceuticals at the enantiomeric level on polyethersulfone(PES)and polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE)membranes used in a polar organic chemical integrative sampler.Batch adsorption experiments showed that the PES membrane had an adsorption phenomenon for most selected pollutants and an insignificant sorption behavior was observed for all selected pharmaceuticals on the PTFE membrane except for R(S)-fluoxetine.The diffusion coefficients of selected pharmaceuticals onto the PTFE membrane were approximately one order of magnitude higher than those onto the PES membrane. The permeation experiment indicated that under different hydraulic conditions, the change of the relative pollutant concentration through the PTFE membrane for the composite pollutant system was more obvious than that for the single pollutant system, and mass transfer hysteresis exists for both contaminant systems through PES membranes.Using the first-order equation or 3-component model to estimate the overall mass transfer coefficients, the results showed that the overall mass transfer coefficient values of pollutants in the composite pollutant system onto both membranes were higher than those in the single pollutant system. This parameter was mainly influenced by the synergistic effects of the multi-analyte interaction and diminished water boundary layers during the mass transfer process.
文摘Pharmaceuticals have been detected nationwide in different environmental matrices including wastewater effluents and surface water. While the quantitative concentrations of these drugs were not determined in this study, their qualitative presence in surface water is noteworthy.
