Analysis of ocean fronts' uncertainties indicates that they result from indiscemibility of their spatial position and fuzziness of their intensity. In view of this, a flow hierarchy for uncertainty representation of ocean fronts is proposed on the basis of fuzzy-rough set theory. Firstly, raster scanning and blurring are carried out on an ocean front, and the upper and lower approximate sets, the indiscernible relation in fuzzy-rough theories and related operators in fuzzy set theories are adopted to represent its uncertainties, then they are classified into three sets: with members one hundred percent belonging to the ocean front, belonging to the ocean front's edge and definitely not belonging to the ocean front. Finally, the approximate precision and roughness degree are utilized to evaluate the ocean front's degree of uncertainties and the precision of the representation. It has been proven that the method is not only capable of representing ocean fronts' uncertainties, but also provides a new theory and method for uncertainty representation of other oceanic phenomena. 展开更多

The oceanic mixed layer in the Southern Ocean is characterized by numerous fronts due to the stirring of freshwater influxes arising from ice melting. The interaction of these fronts with winds modulates the evolution of the mixed layer and affects atmosphere−ocean energy exchanges. However, the underlying mechanism behind the wind-front interaction remains obscure due to a lack of three-dimensional observations of the ocean, particularly in terms of velocities. To address this issue, this study investigates the dynamics of fronts within the mixed layer during a storm by employing a subset of the global submesoscale-permitting simulation,Northeast Weddell Sea Pre-SWOT Level-4 Hourly MITgcm LLC4320 Native Grid 2km Oceanographic Dataset(ROAM_MIZ).We first compare the ROAM_MIZ data to glider data to assess the performance of the model simulation and find that the ROAM_MIZ can,to a large degree, capture sub-mesoscale features within a mixed layer.Subsequent analyses based on a subset of ROAM_MIZ show that lateral density gradients within the mixed layer rapidly decrease during high winds associated with the storm.Down-front winds accelerate this process as the Ekman buoyancy transport responsible for enhancing the instability of the fronts is primarily dominated by horizontal baroclinic components. After the storm, the fronts strengthen again in the presence of weaker winds due to the frontogenesis by the larger-scale strain. Moreover, the non-geostrophic turbulence induces a modification of the relative vorticity, affecting the instability within the mixed layer. These findings offer valuable guidance for the deployment of observational instruments and subsequent analysis,as well as deepen the understanding of air−sea interactions in the Southern Ocean. 展开更多

Two predominant currents, the warm Kuroshio Current and the cold Oyashio Current, meet in the North- west Pacific Ocean. The dynamics of physical oceanographic structures in this region, including frontal zones and meandering eddies, result in a highly productive habitat that serves as a favorable feeding ground for various commercially important species. Neon flying squid, Ommastrephes bartramii, is an im- portant oceanic squid, which is widely distributed in the North Pacific Ocean. Based on the catch data col- lected by Chinese squid jigging fleets and relevant environmental data, including sea surface temperature (SST) and fronts (represented by gradients of SST and thermocline) during 1998-2009, the variations of oceanic fronts and their influence on the fishing grounds of O. bartramii were evaluated, and the differ- ences in distribution of fishing grounds of O. bartramii in 2000 and 2002 were compared by describing the differences in vertical temperature between 0-300 m. It was found that the preferred horizontal tem- perature gradient of SST for O. bartramii tended to be centered at 0.01-0.02~C/nm, which attracted nearly 80% of the total fishing effort, and the preferred horizontal temperature gradients at the 50 m and 105 m layers were mainly located at 0.01-0.03~C/nm, which accounted for more than 70% of the total fishing effort during August-October. The preferred vertical temperature gradient within the 0-50 m layer for O. bartramii tended to be centered at 0.15-0.25~C/m during August and September and at 0.10-0.15~C/m in October, implying that the mixed surface layer was distributed at depths of 0-50 m. It was concluded that the vertical temperature gradient was more important than the horizontal temperature gradient in playing a role in forming the fishing ground. The results improved our understanding of the spatial dynamics of the 0. bartramii fishery. 展开更多

Four sections of expendable conductivity-temperature-depth (XCTD) profiles from Fremantle, Australia to Antarctic Zhongshan Station and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer-Aquarius (MODIS-A) sea surface temperature (SST) products were used to study the structure and seasonal variability of Southeast Indian Ocean fronts. Water mass analysis showed that surface water masses in the Southeast Indian Ocean were less salty in March than in November. Compared with November, the subtropical front (STF) moved southward about one degree of latitude in March, whereas seasonal variability of the subantarctic front (SAF) and polar front (PF) locations was not obvious. In March, the saline front moved northward about two degrees of latitude relative to the thermal front in the upper 100 m at the SAF, which was the northern boundary of sub- Antarctic surface water (SASW). Analysis of climatological SST gradients from the satellite data showed that regions of enhanced sea surface temperature (SST) gradients were collocated with frontal locations identified with the XCTD data using water mass criteria. The surface expression of the PF identified by the SST gradient was further south by about one degree of latitude relative to the subsurface expression of the PF identified by the northern boundary of cold water. 展开更多

Hydrographic data, ADCP velocity and sea level anomaly derived from the satellite altimeter have been jointly analyzed in the southeast lndian Ocean. Results show the locations and orientations of the major oceanic fronts as well as the characteristics of the currents within these fronts in the area. Double subtropical fronts are observed in the section along 120°E, which conflicts with the frontal structure frequently observed before the North Subtropical Front (NSTF) and South Subtropical Front (SSTF) merge into a single STF between 110°-115°E. The Subantarctic Front (SAF), influenced by the out-of-phase double eddies, runs across 48°S three times between 120° and 127°E. The surface current within the SAF is strengthened up to 105.4 cm/s by the geostrophic effect of these eddies. Furthermore eddies may cause the strong current to split up into two branches within the SAF. The SAF and the primary polar front (PFI) can be identified individually in the ADCP data with a separation distance of about 0.3° at latitude between 140° and 145°E, although they cannot be identified separately in the low-resolution hydrographic data. The different thcrmohaline characteristics of Circumpolar Deep Water (CDW) and Modified Circumpolar Deep Water (MCDW) result in the formation of Southern Antarctic Circumpolar Current Front (SACCF) in the southeast Indian Ocean. It consistently turns northward along the east flank of the Kerguclen Plateau after it runs through the Princess Elizabeth Trough and turns southward sharply north of 60°S with a little seasonal variations. It is shown that the locations and orientations of the SAK the primary PF and SACCF in the ACC of the southeast Indian Ocean can be identified more precisely by the current distribution derived from ADCP data than by hydrographic data, because these fronts are usually accompanied by strong currents. However, the locations and orientations of the STF and the secondary PF are more difficult to be identified through current data, since these two fronts are usually not accompanied by any jet. The STF the and the secondary PF are usually confined in the first few hundred meters of the upper ocean and the latter is often determined by the northern terminus of 2 ℃ isothermal. 展开更多

Altimeter and in situ data are used to estimate the mean surface zonal geostrophic current in the section along 115°E in the southern Indian Ocean, and the variation of strong currents in relation to the major fronts is studied. The results show that,in average, the flow in the core of Antarctic Circumpolar Current(ACC) along the section is composed of two parts, one corresponds to the jet of Subantarctic Front(SAF) and the other is the flow in the Polar Front Zone(PFZ),with a westward flow between them. The mean surface zonal geostrophic current corresponding to the SAF is up to 49 cm · s^-1 at 46°S,which is the maximal velocity in the section. The eastward flow in the PFZ has a width of about 4.3 degrees in latitudes. The mean surface zonal geostrophic current corresponding to the Southern Antarctic Circumpolar Current Front(SACCF) is located at 59.7 °S with velocity less than 20 cm · s^-1.The location of zonal geostrophic jet corresponding to the SAF is quite stable during the study period. In contrast, the eastward jets in the PFZ exhibit various patterns,i.e.,the primary Polar Front(PF1) shows its strong meridional shift and the secondary Polar Front(PF2) does not always coincide with jet.The surface zonal geostrophic current corresponding to SAF has the significant periods of annual,semi-annual and four-month.The geostrophic current of the PFZ also shows significant periods of semi-annual and four-month,but is out of phase with the periods of the SAF,which results in no notable semi-annual and fourmonth periods in the surface zonal geostrophic current in the core of the ACC.In terms of annual cycle, the mean surface zonal geostrophic current in the core of the ACC shows its maximal velocity in June. 展开更多

This paper reviews the progress in our understanding of the atmospheric response to midlatitude oceanic fronts and eddies, emphasizing the Kuroshio-Oyashio Extension(KOE)region.Oceanic perturbations of interest consist of sharp oceanic fronts, temperature anomalies associated with mesoscale eddies, and to some extent even higher-frequency submesoscale variability. The focus is on the free atmosphere above the boundary layer. As the midlatitude atmosphere is dominated by vigorous transient eddy activity in the storm track, the response of both the time-mean flow and the storm track is assessed. The storm track response arguably overwhelms the mean-flow response and makes the latter hard to detect from observations.Oceanic frontal impacts on the mesoscale structures of individual synoptic storms are discussed, followed by the role of oceanic fronts in maintaining the storm track as a whole.KOE fronts exhibit significant decadal variability and can therefore presumably modulate the storm track.Relevant studies are summarized and intercompared.Current understanding has advanced greatly but is still subject to large uncertainties arising from inadequate data resolution and other factors.Recent modeling studies highlighted the importance of mesoscale eddies and probably even submesoscale processes in maintaining the storm track but confirmation and validation are still needed. Moreover, the atmospheric response can potentially provide a feedback mechanism for the North Pacific climate.By reviewing the above aspects,we envision that future research shall focus more upon the interaction between smaller-scale oceanic processes(fronts, eddies, submesoscale features)and atmospheric processes(fronts, extratropical cyclones etc.),in an integrated way, within the context of different climate background states. 展开更多

The baroclinic nonlinear stability of fronts in the ocean on a sloping continental shelf is studied, the model equations, called the frontal geostrophic model, developed by Cushman—Roisin et al.(1992) for describing the dynamics of surface density fronts in the ocean are developed and the two—layer frontal geostrophic model for fronts on a sloping continental shelf is first obtained. The nonlinear stability criteria for the fronts on a sloping bottom are obtained by using Arnol’d (1965, 1969) variational principle and a prior estimate method. A hybrid coordinate ocean model (ltYCOM) is used to simulate the Kuroshio frontal eddies in the East China Sea (ECS). The research area is located (20°-32°N, 120°-132°E). Using tile simulating data, it is figured out that the Kuroshio frontal eddies occur in summer as well as in the other season in this area. The life cycle of the Kuroshio and its frontal eddies is different with the position. The life-cycle of the Kuroshio frontal eddies of the northwest Diaoyu Islands is about 14 d; and the life cycle of the Kuroshio frontal eddies of southwest Yakushima about 20 d. This result extends the in situ researching results greatly. In addition, the vertical impact depth of the Kuroshio frontal eddies is also changing with the position. On the whole, in the ECS, the maximum impact depth of the Kuroshio frontal eddies of the northwest Taiwan Islands is about 75 m; the maximum impact depth of the Kuroshio frontal eddies of the northwest Diaoyu Islands is more than 125 m, but no more than 200 m; and the maximum impact depth of the Kuroshio frontal eddies of southwest Yakushima is up to 100 m. 展开更多

This paper discusses a robust technique using entropy-based detection for delineating edges in ocean colour images. The detection process relies on Jhensen-Shannon divergence based image segmentation, which has been found to be the most suitable for noisy ocean colour images. In the attempted technique, partial removal of the noise in the images is performed and the edges are detected using entropic method. In our approach, Jhensen-Shannon divergence for the images is calculated, and the divergence image is arrived at after applying an appropriate threshold and filter to estimate the gradients. An attempted case study on retrieving chlorophyll front edges using this technique indicates that entropic method is far superior to conventional edge-enhancement tools, in terms of its insensitivity to impulsive noises and, capability in detecting meso- and micro-scale changes. This procedure would largely decrease the ambiguities associated with the ocean colour edges and hence has promising application potential in targeting fishing zones, sediment dispersion modeling and climate related studies. 展开更多

The movement of global ocean circulation in the Earth’s main magnetic field generates a measurable induced magnetic field(about 2 nT at geomagnetic satellite altitudes). However, this ocean circulation-induced magnetic field has not been previously estimated or incorporated into geomagnetic field models, potentially causing leakage into the core field model. Here,we present a method to account for the circulation-induced magnetic field during geomagnetic field modeling.First,a forward model of the circulation-induced magnetic field is constructed by numerically solving electromagnetic induction equations based on a realistic ocean circulation model. Then, this forward model is subtracted from the observed data. Finally, the core and lithospheric fields, magnetospheric and Earth’s mantle-induced fields, and the ocean tide-induced magnetic field are co-estimated.Applying our method to over 20 years of MSS-1,Swarm,CryoSat-2,and CHAMP satellite magnetic data,we derive a new multisource geomagnetic field model(MGFM).We find that incorporating a forward model of the circulation-induced magnetic field marginally improves the fit to the data.Furthermore,we demonstrate that neglecting the circulation-induced magnetic field in geomagnetic field modeling results in leakage into the core field model. The highlights of the MGFM model include:(i)a good agreement with the widely used CHAOS model series;(ii)the incorporation of magnetic fields induced by both ocean tides and circulation;and(iii)the suppression of leakage of the circulation-induced magnetic field into the core field model. 展开更多

The lithospheric magnetic field is an important component of the geomagnetic field, and the oceanic lithosphere exhibits distinct characteristics.Because of its formation mechanisms, evolutionary history, and geomagnetic field polarity reversals, the oceanic lithosphere has significant remanent magnetization, which causes magnetic anomaly stripes parallel to the mid-ocean ridges. However,it is difficult to construct a high-resolution lithospheric magnetic field model in oceanic regions with relatively sparse data or no data.Using forward calculated lithospheric magnetic field data based on an oceanic remanent magnetization(ORM) model with physical and geological foundations as a supplement is a feasible approach. We first collect the latest available oceanic crust age grid, plate motion model, geomagnetic polarity timescale, and oceanic lithosphere thermal structure.Combining the assumptions that the paleo geomagnetic field is a geocentric axial dipole field and that the normal oceanic crust moves only in the horizontal direction,we construct a vertically integrated ORM model of the normal oceanic crust with a known age, including the intensity, inclination, and declination. Both the ORM model and the global induced magnetization(GIM) model are then scaled from two aspects between their forward calculated results and the lithospheric magnetic field model LCS-1.One aspect is the difference in their spherical harmonic power spectra, and the other is the misfit between the grid data over the oceans. We last compare the forward calculated lithospheric magnetic anomaly from the scaled ORM and GIM models with the Macao Science Satellite-1(MSS-1) observed data. The comparison results show that the magnetic anomalies over the normal oceanic crust regions at satellite altitude are mainly contributed by the high-intensity remanent magnetization corresponding to the Cretaceous magnetic quiet period. In these regions, the predicted and observed anomalies show good consistency in spatial distribution, whereas their amplitude differences vary across regions. This result suggests that regional ORM construction should be attempted in future work to address these amplitude discrepancies. 展开更多

Mesoscale eddies play a central role in the poleward oceanic heat flux in the Southern Ocean.Previous studies have documented changes in the location of temperature fronts in the Southern Ocean, but little attention has been paid to changes in the genesis locations of mesoscale eddies. Here,we provide evidence from three decades of satellite altimetry observations for the heterogeneity of the poleward shift of mesoscale activities, with the largest trend of~0.23°±0.05°(10 yr)^(-1) over the Atlantic sector and a moderate trend of~0.1°±0.03°(10 yr)^(-1) over the Indian sector, but no significant trend in the Pacific sector. The poleward shift of mesoscale eddies is associated with a southward shift of the local westerly winds while being constrained by the major topographies. As the poleward shift of westerly winds is projected to persist, the poleward oceanic heat flux from mesoscale eddies may influence future ice melt. 展开更多

The Earth's crust, the outer shell of the Earth, consists of continental crust and oceanic crust.Oceanic crust is created at the mid-oceanic ridge, where it is magnetized in the ambient field of the Earth. As new material is extruded, the crust spreads outward, retaining its magnetization. The reversal of the polarity of the Earth's magnetic field over geologic time leads to a pattern of striped magnetic anomalies. In this study,we carry out a preliminary evaluation on how data from the Macao Science Satellite-1(MSS-1),which has a low orbital inclination, influences inversion models of the oceanic crustal magnetic field when combined with data from the Swarm mission. For our modeling we use an equivalent source method based on a cubed-sphere grid. Our model captures the broad magnetic structure over the North Atlantic Ocean and demonstrates that the trend of magnetic stripes is consistent with the age frame of the oceanic crust. The amplitude of the radial magnetic field at 450 km the North Atlantic Ocean ranges from–11 nT to+8 nT.The addition of MSS-1 observations to Swarm data generates results consistent with the overall magnetic stripe pattern. The lack of short-wavelength scale structure reveals the limitation of high-altitude satellites in portraying fine features and hence lower-altitude observations would be required to delineate a more detailed crustal signature. It is expected to obtain a finer structure of oceanic magnetic stripes by combining low-altitude CHAMP field data and east-west gradient data derived from MSS-1 in future work. 展开更多

The Indonesian Throughflow(ITF)plays important roles in global ocean circulation and climate systems.Previous studies suggested the ITF interannual variability is driven by both the El Niño-Southern Oscillation(ENSO)and the Indian Ocean Dipole(IOD)events. The detailed processes of ENSO and/or IOD induced anomalies impacting on the ITF,however, are still not clear. In this study, this issue is investigated through causal relation, statistical, and dynamical analyses based on satellite observation. The results show that the driven mechanisms of ENSO on the ITF include two aspects.Firstly, the ENSO related wind field anomalies driven anomalous cyclonic ocean circulation in the western Pacific, and off equatorial upwelling Rossby waves propagating westward to arrive at the western boundary of the Pacific, both tend to induce negative sea surface height anomalies(SSHA)in the western Pacific, favoring ITF reduction since the develop of the El Niño through the following year.Secondly, the ENSO events modulate equatorial Indian Ocean zonal winds through Walker Circulation, which in turn trigger eastward propagating upwelling Kelvin waves and westward propagating downwelling Rossby waves. The Rossby waves are reflected into downwelling Kelvin waves, which then propagate eastward along the equator and the Sumatra-Java coast in the Indian Ocean. As a result, the wave dynamics tend to generate negative(positive)SSHA in the eastern Indian Ocean, and thus enhance(reduce)the ITF transport with time lag of 0-6 months(9-12 months),respectively.Under the IOD condition, the wave dynamics also tend to enhance the ITF in the positive IOD year, and reduce the ITF in the following year. 展开更多

A remarkable marine heatwave, known as the“Blob”,occurred in the Northeast Pacific Ocean from late 2013 to early 2016,which displayed strong warm anomalies extending from the surface to a depth of 300 m.This study employed two assimilation schemes based on the global Climate Forecast System of Nanjing University of Information Science(NUIST-CFS 1.0)to investigate the impact of ocean data assimilation on the seasonal prediction of this extreme marine heatwave. The sea surface temperature(SST)nudging scheme assimilates SST only, while the deterministic ensemble Kalman filter(EnKF)scheme assimilates observations from the surface to the deep ocean. The latter notably improves the forecasting skill for subsurface temperature anomalies, especially at the depth of 100-300 m(the lower layer),outperforming the SST nudging scheme. It excels in predicting both horizontal and vertical heat transport in the lower layer, contributing to improved forecasts of the lower-layer warming during the Blob. These improvements stem from the assimilation of subsurface observational data, which are important in predicting the upper-ocean conditions. The results suggest that assimilating ocean data with the EnKF scheme significantly enhances the accuracy in predicting subsurface temperature anomalies during the Blob and offers better understanding of its underlying mechanisms. 展开更多

Because of their effect on climate, carbon dioxide(CO_(2)),methane(CH_(4)),nitrous oxide(N_(2)O),and dimethylsulfide(DMS)are collectively designated as climate-relevant gases(CRGs).CO_(2),CH_(4),and N_(2)O are greenhouse gases contributing to global warming(positive climate feedback).Conversely,DMS is involved in the generation of cloud condensation nuclei, thus in the formation of clouds that cool the boundary layer by reflecting incoming solar radiation(negative climate feedback).Despite their scarcity, field observations and model results have demonstrated the essential role of polar oceans in the budget of CRGs.For example, the Southern Ocean represents a substantial CO_(2)sink but a source of N_(2)O and DMS,thereby exerting variable feedback on climate change.Unfortunately, because of the severe environmental conditions at polar latitudes, substantial knowledge gaps remain, for example on the mechanisms underlying CRGs formation or on the strength and distribution of their sources and sinks in the Southern and Arctic Oceans. Here,we review the most recent research results on the distribution,production-loss processes, and abundance variations of CRGs in the polar oceans. We list the remaining knowledge gaps and propose future directions of research on CRGs in the polar oceans,as a useful reference for future studies. 展开更多
