The Book of Songs is the first collection of poems in China, originally named Poetry, and is one of the Five Classics.Whether in terms of themes, thoughts and emotions, language skills,as well as in artistic images and expression methods,it has shown the great achievements of China’s earliest poetry works and has produced a profound influence on Chinese culture and literature. It not only has recorded the various aspects of the society of that time, but also opens the door to many literary studies. There is no need to argue about its status and significance. In the West, about twelve centuries after the creation of the first poem collected in The Book of Songs, there lived a literary theorist who has performed a great influence on western literature. He was Longinus, the author of On the Sublime.By comparing the aesthetic ideas of Longinus and the artistic characteristics of The Book of Songs,we are surprised to find that The Book of Songs is a paragon of the sublime described by Longinus. 展开更多

Cross-cultural interactions between China and the global community have intensified, notably marked by the expanding international reach of Chinese films and television productions.Given the diverse cultural backgrounds of different regions, the task of making adapted TV series resonate with the values of the audiences in the target regions has presented a substantial challenge. As the popular Chinese TV series The Legend of Zhen Huan and its American adaptation Empresses in the Palace garnered acclaim within their respective domestic markets, they exhibited rating disparities in cross-cultural acceptance, which offers a novel perspective for analyzing intercultural communication.Building on this phenomenon, this study employs Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions Theory and Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck’s Values Orientation Theory to conduct a comparative analysis of the theme songs from the two series.By deconstructing the contextual contents embedded in these musical compositions, the research aims to elucidate the underlying cultural and cognitive differences between Chinese and American audiences, which lead to their distinct acceptances of the series. 展开更多

Birdsong is an important secondary sexual trait which may vary between but also within species.Intraspecific variation is generally studied either on the geographical or on the temporal scale;most of the studies exploring the variation of song over time, however, focused on species with rather simple songs. In this study,we explored the temporal changes in song of a complex songster, the Thrush Nightingale(Luscinia luscinia),recorded after 33 years(in 1986 and 2019)at the same locality in south-eastern Finland. Our analysis revealed a complete turnover of song types over the study period, with no song type shared between the two recording years. In contrast,40%of the originally recorded syllable types were still found in the repertoires of recently recorded males.Their song type repertoires were significantly smaller but the songs themselves were on average longer compared to the 1986 recordings.Repertoires of both syllables and song types were more shared between males recorded in 1986 than between those from 2019.We discuss the processes that may have contributed to these temporal changes in song and call for more detailed studies of song evolution in wild populations. 展开更多

Chinese classical poetry art songs are one of the important genres in vocal works. The interpretation of each piece place high demands on the singer’s breath control, timbre, and expression of song connotations. With a long history of development and diverse stylistic classifications, they evoke varied emotional responses.A song primarily consists of two components:poetry and music.Poetry uses textual composition to shape poetic imagery, while music employs musical elements to create artistic images. These two elements complement and permeate each other. The integration of poetry and music better serves the presentation of artistic works, interprets the song’s artistic conception, and realizes the essence of Chinese classical aesthetic conceptions——the“Dao”that connects to the cosmic essence and life.Through specific research on the aesthetic harmony between poetry and music, this study clearly demonstrates the path of poetic-musical coexistence in Chinese classical poetry art songs. 展开更多

Urban environments have challenging characteristics for bird acoustic communication.High levels of anthropogenic noise,as well as vegetation structure(e.g.,in urban parks),can potentially affect the song frequency characteristics of several bird species. An additional factor such as the abundance of conspecific and heterospecific vocalizing birds may play an important role in determining the structure of bird songs. In this study,we analyzed whether noise levels, vegetation percentage, and abundance of conspecifics and heterospecifics influence the song characteristics of three syntopic songbird species:House Finch(Haemorhous mexicanus),Rufouscollared Sparrow(Zonotrichia capensis),and House Sparrow(Passer domesticus)living in urban sites. We recorded songs of these species and measured the peak frequency and entropy of their songs at 14 sites in the city of San Cristobal de Las Casas,Chiapas,Mexico. We found that the song peak frequency of House Finch and House Sparrow's songs was negatively related to the vegetation. The peak frequency of neither of the three species correlated with the average noise level. However, the abundances of conspecific and heterospecific were related to the peak frequency of the three species'songs. The entropy of the House Finch and House Sparrow songs was positively and negatively related, respectively,to noise levels.House Sparrow song entropy was negatively related to the percentage of vegetation.Song entropy of House Finches was negatively associated to conspecific and House Sparrow abundance.Song entropy of Rufous-collared Sparrows was positively related to conspecific abundance. In conclusion, the song peak frequency and song entropy of the three songbird species were differentially related to urban noise, vegetation, and conspecific and heterospecific abundance, suggesting these factors influence bird song characteristics. 展开更多

Continuity is the foremost defining characteristic of Chinese civilization. It ensures that the evolution of this civilization respects the fine traditions and stays on the right course throughout its creative course.Meanwhile, creativity imparts ceaseless vitality to this civilization, serving as the intrinsic propulsive force that fuels its evolution. The rise of Song Studies marks one of the symbolic events in the transformation in the Chinese ideological and cultural realm. It encapsulates the dialectical unity between continuity and creativity that characterizes Chinese civilization.Song Studies adhere to the traditional classic interpretations, center the core values around“benevolence,”and pursue the way of sages, which reflect the continuity of Chinese civilization. They also embody creativity. This is manifested in the emergence of a new academic spirit that emphasizes the seeking of truth and reason,a new academic ethos that involves questioning classics in the process of their dissemination and interpreting them with one’s own insight,as well as the fusion of philosophical speculation with social practice.Conducting an integrated analysis of the defining characteristics of Chinese civilization and the rise of Song Studies helps us gain a thorough understanding of the dialectical unity between the continuity and creativity of Chinese civilization through the interactions between history and reality. It also enables us to effectively address the relationship between inheritance and transformation,as well as between maintaining core values and pursuing creativity throughout its ongoing development. 展开更多

A 1.5-hour recording of six (Gulf of Mexico) captive common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) at Sea Life Park, Hawaii shows that: 1) they have a song of a sequence of tonal (often slurred) notes. The evidence for their song comes from: a) their emitting songs that were complex (both tonally and rhythmically), b) their likely improvising (as inferred from their most complex songs not being repeated), c) songs based on a theme (used repeatedly), d) a bout of singing (at times) including social creativity, e) songs with a distinct beginning, middle and end section, and f) one song consisting of in part, a theme, 2) their songs are not sung in key (as determined from analysing the beginning tonal value of a note with spectral-frequency analysis), and 3) are sung in bouts, and 4) mostly with tonal-striated vocalizations (in the literature termed squawks and bray calls). Their apparent creativity (likely improvisations) and social creativity are of importance to how they evolved cognitively, to the study of song culture (between populations and delphinid species), understanding their (intra and inter-species) associations, and kinds of relationships, determining individual personalities, and perhaps will provide supporting evidence for their ability to reason. As inferred, they sing without being intentionally manipulative from: 1) their use of Gquic psychology [1] (as explained in this article), and 2) as inferred from their likely having an ability to reason [1] [2] (as deduced from their behavioural ecology (their unique exceptional evolutionary freedom), including their comparatively peaceful composure between conspecifics, in line with the proof of The Peaceful Composure Theorem), suggesting (per The Peaceful Composure Theorem) they have an egalitarian-like society. Their interspecies (displaced) aggression towards smaller odontocete species is shown to be a function of jealousies that emerge from their stronger social bonds than other species, from their compassionate nature, and females and males not pairing up in long-term associations. Species with greater cultural freedom are shown to have a more complex song providing further evidence for species culture not crucial to survival. The conclusive evidence for specie culture from my recent publications is of relevance to the scientific community’s acceptance of two new theories of evolution, and Gquic psychology. The loud burst-pulse sounds, chasing, charging and raking behaviours described in the literature could be a play behaviour, ought not be labelled as aggressive behaviours, as inferred from dog mock-fight play behaviour. In regard to future comparative behavioural ecology studies, aggressive animal behaviour should only be defined as an act of displacement (that is shown to commonly occur in the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin species (Tursiops aduncus)), or as acts of biting, and hitting. 展开更多

The Sluice Gate with Freight Carts is the earliest extant scroll in China that depicted a water mill.It was drawn during the early or middle Northern Song dynasty and was possibly a true portrayal of the West Water Mill Office. The copresence of a banquet scene of the Northern Song dynasty’s scholar-officials and a water mill both suggests a realistic reproduction of a specific scene and indicates the significance of the water mill as a cultural space. The Northern Song dynasty’s government-operated water mills were especially noticeable in the Capital Circuit京畿路,whose center was Dongjing东京.The basic development path of government-operated water mills in the inner and outer city of Dongjing was first from grain processing, which supplied the needs of the imperial palace,to tea processing,in which the governmental commercial capital also participated.Regarding city space and the use of water sources, the development spread from the north of the city to the south.Other prefectures outside Dongjing also had government-operated water mills—some brought income that could be used as official fiscal expenditure, including military expenditure, and were used to satisfy the need of local people’s livelihood, while some were used to serve the monopoly policy of tea and demonstrate the benevolent governance of local officials. In the Northern Song dynasty, the water mill was no longer merely a production site;rather,it was also a cultural space that integrated a natural background and artificial ingenuity.Closely related to the hosting of emperors and the garden making, sightseeing, feasting, and drinking of scholar-officials,along with the festival activities of locals, the water mill in the Northern Song dynasty was of great cultural significance. 展开更多

The medical education of the Song dynasty constitutes a pivotal aspect within the broader framework of ancient Chinese medical education. The advent of the imperial examination system coincided with the emergence of a medical examination system, which served as the cornerstone for the subsequent evolution of medical education. According to historical records, the Song government established dedicated medical departments, along with comprehensive systems encompassing medical professors, students, and examinations. By examining extant medical historical documents, such as Tai Yi Ju Zhu Ke Cheng Wen Ge(《太医局诸科程文格》 Examination Answers and Standards of the Imperial Medical Bureau), researchers and readers can obtain a comprehensive understanding of the medical system that prevailed in the Song dynasty. While the intricate details of medical education during this era are not explicitly documented in historical records, modern researchers have the opportunity to uncover the entire view of medical education, particularly the medical examination system, through rigorous analysis of these extant historical medical documents. Such studies offer valuable insights into the developmental trajectory of the ancient Chinese medical examination system and provide crucial references for contemporary medical education. By conducting in-depth literature research and analysis of Tai Yi Ju Zhu Ke Cheng Wen Ge, this study endeavors to reconstruct the authentic scenario of medical examinations in the Song dynasty, as presented in the document, for the benefit of modern readers and researchers. 展开更多

We analyzed the songs of the Asian Stubtail (Urosphena squameiceps),a migratory passerine that breeds in northeast Asia. The possibility of individual identification of this species by songs was examined in a population in northern China during the breeding season of 2010.Individuality was determined using discriminant function analysis, artificial neural networks and spectrographic cross-correlation.Our results show that, the rate of correct classification is satisfactory in this species, regardless of methods. From an applied perspective, spectrographic cross-correlation is most suitable.Besides its maximum rate of correct classification (89.4%),it does not require measurements of spectrograms, which is a necessity other methods and may introduce artificial errors. We hope that our result of individual identification on the basis of acoustic signals may open up a new research venue for this species. 展开更多

A good title of great originality can concentrate on the main points and arouse readers' interests. The title plays a significant part especially in the times of eyeball economy. However, though short as titles are, they always contain a lot of connotations which are quite difficult to translate. Translation is substantially kind of cross-cultural information communication, and translation of song titles is no exception. Due to different origins, Chinese and Western cultures possess their own characteristics in cultural images, ways of thinking, and historical allusions, which should be considered when translating song titles. 展开更多

In recent years, attention has gradually been paid on the metaphor study in the Chinese academic circles, and some domestic scholars have carried out research one after another, mainly through some daily expression, poetry, prose or novel to analyze and demonstrate the similarities and differences of love metaphors in Chinese and western culture. The new exploration of the role of metaphor in poetry and the cognitive mechanism was included, and it gained some achievements. The innovation of this paper is that it breaks the confinition to everyday expression, literature, combing with classic and modern songs in English and Chinese, to compare the love metaphor in English and Chinese songs. 展开更多
