Enhancing Salt Stress Tolerance in Portulaca oleracea L. Using Ascophyllum nodosum Biostimulant

Salinity stress is amajor constraint on agricultural productivity,particularly in arid and semi-arid regions.This study evaluated the potential of Ascophyllum nodosum extract(ANE)in mitigating salinity-induced stress and enhancing the growth and physiological performance of Portulaca oleracea L.under NaCl concentrations of 0,50,70,and 100 mM for 50 days.A two-way ANOVA assessed the effects of NaCl concentration,ANE treatment,and their interaction.The results showed that ANE significantly increased plant height at 50 mMNaCl(p=0.0011)but had no effect at higher salinity levels(p>0.05).Shoot dry weight was significantly influenced by the interaction of NaCl and ANE(p=0.0064),with ANE increasing biomass at 0 mM but decreasing it at 100 mM NaCl.However,ANE did not significantly affect root dry weight(p>0.05).Physiological responses indicated a significant increase in proline content at 50mMNaCl(p=0.0011),supporting improved osmotic adjustment.Total soluble protein was significantly enhanced at all salinity levels except 100 mM NaCl(p<0.01).Regarding ionic regulation,ANE had no significant effect on leaf sap pH(p>0.05)but increased electrical conductivity(EC)at 70 and 100 mM NaCl(p<0.01),suggesting a role in ion homeostasis under high salinity.Photosynthetic pigments responded positively to ANE,with significant increases in chlorophyll“a”(p<0.0001)and carotenoid content(p<0.0001),while chlorophyll“b”remained unchanged(p>0.05).These findings highlight ANE’s potential as a sustainable biostimulant for improving salinity tolerance,particularly at moderate NaCl levels.Future research should focus on molecular mechanisms and long-term field applications to optimize ANE’s role in enhancing soil and crop productivity under salinity stress. 展开更多

Background:Dietary supplementation with a fucoidan-rich Ascophyllum nodosum extract(ANE),possessing an in vitro anti-Salmonella Typhimurium activity could be a promising on-farm strategy to control Salmonella infection in pigs.The objectives of this study were to:1)evaluate the anti-S.Typhimurium activity of ANE(containing 46.6%fucoidan,18.6%laminarin,10.7%mannitol,4.6%alginate)in vitro,and;2)compare the effects of dietary supplementation with ANE and Zinc oxide(ZnO)on growth performance,Salmonella shedding and selected gut parameters in naturally infected pigs.This was established post-weaning(newly weaned pig experiment)and following regrouping of post-weaned pigs and experimental re-infection with S.Typhimurium(challenge experiment).Results:In the in vitro assay,increasing ANE concentrations led to a linear reduction in S.Typhimurium counts(P<0.05).In the newly weaned pig experiment(12 replicates/treatment),high ANE supplementation increased gain to feed ratio,similar to ZnO supplementation,and reduced faecal Salmonella counts on d 21 compared to the low ANE and control groups(P<0.05).The challenge experiment included thirty-six pigs from the previous experiment that remained on their original dietary treatments(control and high ANE groups with the latter being renamed to ANE group)apart from the ZnO group which transitioned onto a control diet on d 21(ZnO-residual group).These dietary treatments had no effect on performance,faecal scores,Salmonella shedding or colonic and caecal Salmonella counts(P>0.05).ANE supplementation decreased the Enterobacteriaceae counts compared to the control.Enterobacteriaceae counts were also reduced in the ZnO-residual group compared to the control(P<0.05).ANE supplementation decreased the expression of interleukin 22 and transforming growth factor beta 1 in the ileum compared to the control(P<0.05).Conclusions:ANE supplementation was associated with some beneficial changes in the composition of the colonic microbiota,Salmonella shedding,and the expression of inflammatory genes associated with persistent Salmonella infection. 展开更多

Oceans and seas form a large body of water that contains a natural biodiversity.For humans,represents a resource,which makes this a point of interest,from researches to improve the economy.Seaweeds produce many compounds and secondary metabolites that can be used in different fi elds of industry such as food,agricultural,pharmaceutical and health.Even though seaweeds are ancestral resources,recently it was notorious a global interest in knowing more about its potentials,where biotechnology plays an important role in research.Studies showed that seaweed has many bioactive compounds benefi cial to plant development,giving them a great potential as an agricultural fertilizer.Adding seaweeds to the soil provides organic matter,minerals,trace elements,growth plant regulator,metabolites,vitamins,and amino acids and it can work as a soil conditioner.In Portugal,the use of seaweeds for agriculture is important since long time ago.In the past,populations that lived near coastal zone depended on the seaweeds as a family subsistence but,throughout the years,synthetic fertilizers replaced seaweeds.Our work aimed to assess the potential of the extracts obtained from Ascophyllum nodosum and from Sargassum muticum as an agricultural fertilizer.This evaluation was carried out with rice plants(Oryza sativa)and lettuce(Lactuca sativa),in germination bioassays,the culture of rice and lettuce plants in pots,and culture of lettuce plants in hydroponics.For that,seaweed liquid extracts were used in different concentrations in different bioassays.Results show that extracts obtained from two seaweeds,A.nodosum and S.muticum,can be promissory plant biofertilizer at a concentration of 25% and had a positive effect on seed germination,plant development,and production. 展开更多

A 31-year-old woman was referred with a painful mass in the left breast that was initially treated with antibiotics. Three weeks later, the mass had increased and polyarthritis and erythema nodosum had developed in both legs. A core needle biopsy led to a diagnosis of granulomatous mastitis with arthritis and erythema nodosum. Low-dose prednisolone (10 mg) rapidly improved the arthritis and the erythema nodosum. Granulomatous mastitis is a very rare, chronic inflammatory disease and only nine patients with granulomatous mastitis with erythema nodosum have been described. We reviewed the literature to determine the clinicopathological features and treatment of granulomatous mastitis. Appropriate diagnosis and steroid therapy should result in excellent outcomes. 展开更多

Clinical characteristics predicting erythema nodosum leprosum(ENL) among patients with multibacillary leprosy(MBL) in Sarawak

Objective:To determine the clinical features predicting erythema nodosum leprosum(ENL) in a non endemic leprosy area.Methods:Twenty newly diagnosed patients with MBL attending the skin clinic,Sarawak General Hospital from 1992 to 2007 were analyzed.They were divided into 2 groups,one with ENL and one without. Analysis of the presenting clinical features was done to determine the risk factors for ENL.Chi square and student t test was used for statistical analysis.Level of significance was set at 0.05.Results:ENL was present in 40%patients,all with lepromatous leprosy(LL).Clinical features that were seen more frequently in patients developing ENL include earlobe thickening(100%cf.25%,P =0.00),loss of the lateral third of the eyebrows(75%cf.16.7%,P=0.02) and mean bacteriology index(BI)(5.1 cf.2.9,P=0.03) and mean morphological index(MI)(17.8 cf.7.0,P =0.02).Number of thickened nerves(mean 2.5 cf. 1.4,P = 0.12),number of skin lesions(mean 19.4 cf.10.9,P = 0.15) and duration of illness(mean 15. 3 cf.12.8 months,P =0.68) did not predict ENL development.Conclusion:Finding LL patients with thickened earlobes,loss of lateral third of the eyebrow,high BI and MI should alert treating clinician to the possibility of ENL in a non endemic leprosy area. 展开更多

Restenosis is a common complication following coronary angioplasty.The traditional use of seaweeds for health benefits has increasingly been explored,however few studies exist reporting its protective effects on the development of restenosis and gut dysbiosis.The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of seaweed extracts(SE) of Ascophyllum nodosum and Fucus vesiculosus in inhibiting intimal hyperplasia in a rat model of restenosis and its underlying mechanisms in macrophages and vascular smooth muscle cells(vSMCs).16S rRNA sequencing was done to investigate the regulatory effect of SE on the gut microbiome of injured rats.As indicated by the results,SE significantly inhibited the progression of intimal hyperplasia in vivo,attenuated inflammation in macrophages and could inhibit the proliferation,dedifferentiation and migration of vSMCs.It was observed through immunoblotting assays that treatment with SE significantly upregulated PTEN expression in macrophages and inhibited the upregulation of PI3K and AKT expression in vSMCs.Meanwhile,according to the 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis,supplementation with SE modulated gut microbiota composition in injured rats.In conclusion,SE could ameliorate intimal hyperplasia by inhibiting inflammation and vSMCs proliferation through the regulation of the PTEN/PI3K/AKT pathway and modulating the gut microbiome. 展开更多

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is one of the eight known human herpesviruses, which is widespread in nature and infects most of the world population. In infants and young children, primary infection is usually asymptomatic or produces an acute illness that is often not recognized as being due to EBV. It has a well-established oncogenic potential, and has been implicated in the pathogenesis of various autoimmune diseases. Here is reported the case of a 32-months old boy, who presented with a history of two days of low-grade fever, pain in both legs, swollen ankles and inability to walk. On physical examination, the child appeared moderately ill, without fever. On both shins were observed nodules 2 - 3 cm in diameter, red to bluish in color, firm and poorly demarcated. Clinically, a diagnosis of Erythema nodosus was performed. Laboratory examinations revealed increased inflammatory parameters. After a full workup, EBV was established as the causative agent. Erythema nodosum is the most common form of panniculitis in children;however, it is relatively uncommon in the pediatric population. It is a self-limited disease, and most of infectious origin in children. Although uncommon, EBV infection is a potential cause of pediatric erythema nodosum. 展开更多

While erythema nodosum is a nodular, erythematous eruption predominantly affecting the extensor aspects of the legs, breast abscesses are the result of relatively common bacterial infections, and only 2 studies have reported an association between erythema nodosum and breast abscesses. Here, we report the case of a patient with repeated erythema nodosum associated with subareolar abscesses. The patient was a 34-year-old woman with painful erythematous nodules on her right shin, accompanied by an indurated lesion on her right breast 4 days before the onset of the nodules. Therefore, the patient underwent circumareolar incision, and consequently the painful erythematous nodules disappeared. However, after 39 days, the patient developed another tender, painful lesion in her right breast and painful erythematous nodules on her right shin. After another circumareolar incision, the painful erythematous nodules disappeared again. Therefore, we suggested a significant association between erythema nodosum and breast abscess in this patient. The most common underlying causative organism in breast abscess is Staphylococcus aureus;however, erythema nodosum has rarely been proven to be associated with staphylococcal infections. Therefore, the relationship between S. aureus and erythema nodosum is rather controversial. However, the resistance to the usual treatment methods and prolonged clinical course in our case suggest that the pathogenesis of erythema nodosum associated with breast abscesses might be different from that of the common form of erythema nodosum. 展开更多

Erythema nodosum (EN) is a delayed hypersensitivity response that may be triggered by a range of conditions, including infections and vaccines. Rare cases of EN caused by COVID-19 were recently reported but none due to COVID-19 vaccines were documented. We report here a case of EN occurring after COVID-19 vaccination. Patient presented with painful nodular lesions of all 4 limbs, evolving for one month. These lesions appeared 48 h after the second dose of COVID-19 vaccination. The patient reported no recent infectious episodes. The physical examination found numerous, erythematous dermohypodermatitis knots with no palpable adenopathy. Some were regressive according to biligenesis shades. Biology and radiology findings eliminated other common causes of this dermatosis. The skin biopsy was done and suggested EN. The final diagnosis was post COVID-19 vaccine EN. Patient received a symptomatic treatment and had a slight improvement of the lesions 10 days after diagnosis. Physicians should be aware of the side effects of the vaccine including skin manifestations, especially since more people are bound to be vaccinated. 展开更多

目的探讨乌司奴单抗(UST)双静脉强化诱导治疗及UST联合乌帕替尼(UPA)的双靶向治疗,对1例克罗恩病合并结节性红斑(EN)患者的有效性及安全性,为生物制剂标准治疗应答不佳且合并皮肤肠外表现的复杂克罗恩病患者个体化治疗提供参考。方法1... 目的探讨乌司奴单抗(UST)双静脉强化诱导治疗及UST联合乌帕替尼(UPA)的双靶向治疗,对1例克罗恩病合并结节性红斑(EN)患者的有效性及安全性,为生物制剂标准治疗应答不佳且合并皮肤肠外表现的复杂克罗恩病患者个体化治疗提供参考。方法1例克罗恩病患者因阿达木单抗(ADA)失应答换用UST,完成UST第1次静脉注射诱导后病情进展,先后出现小肠梗阻及EN。临床药师通过治疗药物监测结果解读、治疗方案评估,查阅循证依据并积极参与查房及讨论,协助医生调整治疗方案为UST双静脉强化诱导(第0、5周静脉滴注390 mg)联合UPA(15 mg,qd,po)双靶向治疗,并进行用药宣教和药学随访,动态监测炎症指标、营养状态、影像学及皮肤表现变化,评估优化治疗策略的疗效与安全性。结果经治疗,患者双足疼痛缓解,红斑逐步消退;小肠梗阻显著改善,无腹痛腹胀,白细胞计数、C-反应蛋白、白蛋白恢复正常;随访过程中未发生感染或血栓等严重不良事件。结论临床药师结合患者个体特征及循证依据,为优化治疗方案提供协助。UST双静脉强化诱导方案能缓解活动期症状,联合UPA双靶向治疗策略可协同发挥疗效,控制合并EN的复杂克罗恩病患者肠道炎症及肠外表现,为难治性克罗恩病患者提供新的治疗选择。 展开更多

Objective:This study was performed to compare the efficacy and safety of methotrexate(MTX)plus prednisolone versus prednisolone monotherapy in patients with erythema nodosum leprosum(ENL).Methods:This comparative clinical study was performed in the Chittagong Medical College Hospital,Bangladesh from June 2018 to December 2019.Nineteen patients were selected according to inclusion criteria and randomly allocated to either the MTX plus prednisolone group(Group A,n=10)or the prednisolone monotherapy group(Group B,n=9).All patients were followed up until the end of the 6-month duration of therapy to observe the clinical outcomes and adverse effects.Results:All patients in both groups showed significant improvement(P=0.005 and P=0.008 in Group A and B,respectively).However,prednisolone-related adverse events were more frequent in Group B.Conclusion:The present study has demonstrated that a combination of prednisolone and MTX is a safer and more effective treatment than steroid monotherapy in ENL patients including the healing of nodules.However,this combination therapy did not appear to have a significant steroid-sparing effect,possibly because of the small sample size and short study period.Therefore,a well-designed multicenter randomized controlled trial is recommended for validation of MTX with prednisolone for the management of ENL. 展开更多

为分析泡叶藻(Ascophyllum nodosum)、树皮藻(Ecklonia maxima)及巨藻Lessonia trabeculata(LF)和Lessonia nigrescens(LN)的营养价值,进一步挖掘其加工利用潜力,对这4种大型褐藻的基本营养成分、氨基酸、脂肪酸、无机元素进行测定与评... 为分析泡叶藻(Ascophyllum nodosum)、树皮藻(Ecklonia maxima)及巨藻Lessonia trabeculata(LF)和Lessonia nigrescens(LN)的营养价值,进一步挖掘其加工利用潜力,对这4种大型褐藻的基本营养成分、氨基酸、脂肪酸、无机元素进行测定与评价。结果表明,4种大型褐藻均为高蛋白、低脂肪、高膳食纤维的藻类,其中树皮藻中不溶性膳食纤维含量高达48.60%。巨藻LN、树皮藻、巨藻LF、泡叶藻中的碘胶醇含量分别为48.99、48.31、47.48、40.88 g·100 g^(-1);4种褐藻均含有18种氨基酸,其中包含8种必需氨基酸,氨基酸评分高于国际粮农组织/世界卫生组织标准,表明4种褐藻的氨基酸组成合理、分布均衡;通过必需氨基酸指数得出,巨藻LN具有更高的营养价值,其饱和脂肪酸占总脂肪酸的比例较高,且不饱和脂肪酸含量较高。4种褐藻均富含Na、K、Ca、Fe、Zn等无机元素。除泡叶藻中的Pb元素超出限定范围外,其余重金属元素含量均在限量范围以内。综上,4种褐藻具有较高营养价值,在海藻化工和营养保健食品开发方面均具有较大利用潜力。 展开更多

目的 分析肉芽肿性小叶性乳腺炎伴发乳腺导管扩张症及结节性红斑的临床病理特征.方法 收集4例此类病例,对其临床和组织病理学资料进行回顾性分析.结果 4例肉芽肿性小叶性乳腺炎伴发乳腺导管扩张症、结节性红斑患者年龄为25 ~ 39岁,均... 目的 分析肉芽肿性小叶性乳腺炎伴发乳腺导管扩张症及结节性红斑的临床病理特征.方法 收集4例此类病例,对其临床和组织病理学资料进行回顾性分析.结果 4例肉芽肿性小叶性乳腺炎伴发乳腺导管扩张症、结节性红斑患者年龄为25 ~ 39岁,均有生育史.大体检查乳腺肿块直径9~13 cm,与周围组织界限不清,切面见小脓腔或小囊腔,腔内有灰白或淡黄色分泌物.镜下4例均有肉芽肿性小叶性乳腺炎表现,在此基础上均可见乳腺导管扩张;下肢皮肤呈结节性红斑改变.1例曾行抗生素治疗无效;2例激素治疗曾好转,停药后加重,1例抗结核治疗无效.术后随访6 ~35个月,均未复发.结论 肉芽肿性小叶性乳腺炎可与乳腺导管扩张症、结节性红斑伴发,准确诊断有助于临床针对性治疗和减少复发,对提高患者生活质量具有积极意义. 展开更多

采用PAP法对结节性红斑、慢性游走性给节性红斑、硬红斑及结节性血管炎4种疾病共35例的原位抗原进行检测。结果在血管的检出例数分别为11/12,8/8,8/8,6/7;在胶原纤维表面的检出例数分别为11/12,7/8,8/8,6/7;所有病例表... 采用PAP法对结节性红斑、慢性游走性给节性红斑、硬红斑及结节性血管炎4种疾病共35例的原位抗原进行检测。结果在血管的检出例数分别为11/12,8/8,8/8,6/7;在胶原纤维表面的检出例数分别为11/12,7/8,8/8,6/7;所有病例表皮角朊细胞内均能检出;在血管腔内与血管腔外的红细胞表面的检出例数除慢性游走性结节性红斑为5/8外,其余病种均能检出。提示结节性红斑等4种疾病均为存在免疫复合物疾病,具有共同的免疫病理基础,而且还提示免疫复合物在机体内处于动态清除过程之中。除红细胞转运降解以外还通过表皮以经皮排异形式从皮肤排出体外。 展开更多
