Grazing exclusion is one of the primary management practices used to restore degraded grasslands on the Tibetan Plateau. However,to date, the effects of long-term grazing exclusion measures on the process of restoring degraded alpine meadows have not been evaluated. In this study, moderately degraded plots,in which the vegetation coverage was approximately 65%and the dominant plant species was Potentilla anserina L,with grazing exclusion for 2 to 23 years, were selected in alpine meadows of Haibei in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.Plant coverage, plant height, biomass, soil bulk density, saturated water content, soil organic carbon(SOC)and total nitrogen(TN)were evaluated. The results were as follows:(1)With aboveground biomass and total saturated water content at 0-40 cm depth, the average SOC and TN contents in moderately degraded alpine meadows increased as a power function, and the plant height increased as a log function.(2)The average soil bulk density at 0-40 cm depth first decreased and then increased with increasing grazing exclusion duration, and the minimum value of 0.90 g·cm^(-3)was reached at 15.23 years. The plant coverage, total belowground biomass at 0-40 cm depth, total aboveground and belowground biomass first increased and then decreased, their maximum values(80.49%,2452.92g·m^(-2),2891.06 g·m^(-2))were reached at 9.41,9.46 and 10.25 years,respectively.Long-term grazing exclusion is apparently harmful for the sustainable restoration of degraded alpine meadows. The optimal duration of grazing exclusion for the restoration of moderately degraded alpine meadows was 10 years. This research suggests that moderate disturbance should be allowed in moderately degraded alpine meadows after 10years of grazing exclusion. 展开更多

Both overgrazing and climate change contribute to grassland degradation in the alpine regions of China and negatively affect soil carbon and nitrogen pools. We quantified changes in soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (TN) in black soil beach (BSB). We measured SOC and TN in severely degraded and non-degraded grasslands to calculate differences in carbon and nitrogen storage, and field survey results were extrapolated to the entire headwaters area of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (36.3xlos krn~) to determine SOC and TN losses from these grasslands. We also evaluated changes in SOC and TN in severely degraded grasslands that were artificially re-vegetated five, seven and nine years ago. Totally 92.43 Tg C and 7.08 Tg N were lost from the BSB in the headwater area, which was approximately 50% of the original C and N soil pools. Re-vegetation of the degraded grasslands in the headwater area would result in a gain of 32.71 Tg C in the soil after five years, a loss of 5.5a Tg C after seven years and an increase of 44.15 Tg C after nine years. The TN increased by 53.09% and 59.98% after five and nine years, respectively, while it decreased by 4.92% after seven years of re-vegetation. The results indicate that C and N stocks followed a "V" shaped pattern with re- vegetation time. Understanding plant-soil interactions during succession of artificially planting grassland ecosystems is essential for developing scientifically sound management strategies for the effectively re-vegetated BSB. 展开更多

Although afforestation of farmlands has been proposed as an effective method of carbon(C) sequestration, there remain uncertainties that deter us from developing a clear picture of C stocks in plantation ecosystems. This study investigated the dynamics of stand structure and plant diversity, and C and nitrogen(N) pools in trees, herbs, litter, and soil(0–100 cm depth) in black locust plantations aged 9, 17, 30, and 37 years, and in newly abandoned farmlands as pre-afforestation sites, on the Loess Plateau, China. Stand density decreased significantly, while tree diameter at breast height and height increased during stand development. The dominant species of the herb layer differed with age. Afforestation resulted in slight increases in tree C and N storage in plantations from 9 to 30 years of age, and then significantly increased from 30 to 37 years. Compared to pre-afforestation, C and N storage in soil decreased to minimum values in stands aged 17 and 9 years, respectively. The soil re-accumulated C and N during stand development, attaining equilibrium levels similar to those in pre-afforestation when stands reached about 30 years of age. Soil C and N storage in 37-year stands were 29 and 16% higher, respectively, than in pre-afforestation levels. However, C and N concentrations in the subsoil(20–40 cm) were still less than the preafforestation levels for stands of all ages(from 9 to 37 years). The relative contribution to the total ecosystem C and N pools increased in trees and decreased in soil during the observed period. Our results indicate that afforestation reduced soil C and N storage during the early stages of stand development. We conclude that the growing phase of an afforested stand over its initial 30 years is important for C and N sequestration by black locust due to the C and N storage that result from recovered soil quality and an increase in tree biomass. 展开更多
