In addition to being driven by tidal winds, the sporadic E(Es)layers are modulated by gravity waves(GWs),although the effects are not yet comprehensively understood. In this article,we discuss the effects of mesoscale GWs on the Es layers determined by using a newly developed model,MISE-1D(one-dimensional Model of Ionospheric Sporadic E),with low numerical dissipation and high resolution.Driven by the wind fields resolved by the high-resolution version of the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with thermosphere and ionosphere extension(WACCM-X),the MISE-1D simulation revealed that GWs significantly influence the evolution of the Es layer above 100 km but have a very limited effect at lower altitudes. The effects of GWs are diverse and complex, generally including the generation of fluctuating wavelike structures on the Es layer with frequencies similar to those of the GWs.The mesoscale GWs can also cause increases in the density of Es layers,or they can disperse or diffuse the Es layers and increase their thickness. In addition, the presence of GWs is a key factor in sustaining the Es layers in some cases. 展开更多

The composite structures/components made by friction stir lap welding(FSLW)of Mg alloy sheet and Al alloy sheet are of wide application potentials in the manufacturing sector of transportation vehicles. To further improve the joint quality, the ultrasonic vibration(UV)is exerted in FSLW,and the UV enhanced FSLW(UVeFSLW)was developed for making Mg-to-Al dissimilar joints. The numerical analysis and experimental investigation were combined to study the process mechanism in Mg/Al UVeFSLW.An equation related to the temperature and strain rate was derived to calculate the grain size at different locations of the weld nugget zone, and the effect of grain size distribution on the threshold thermal stress was included,so that the prediction accuracy of flow stress was further improved. With such modified constitutive equation, the numerical simulation was conducted to compare the heat generation, temperature profiles and material flow behaviors in Mg/Al UVeFSLW/FSLW processes. It was found that the exerted UV decreased the temperature at two checking points on the tool/workpiece interface from 707/671 K in FSLW to 689/660 K in UVeFSLW,which suppressed the IMCs thickness at Mg-Al interface from 1.7μm in FSLW to 1.1μm in UVeFSLW.The exerted UV increased the horizontal materials flow ability, and decreased the upward flow ability, which resulted in the increase of effective sheet thickness/effective lap width from 2.01/3.70 mm in FSLW to 2.04/4.84 mm in UVeFSLW.Therefore, the ultrasonic vibration improved the tensile shear strength of Mg-to-Al lap joints by 18%. 展开更多

Friction stir welding(FSW)is a relatively new welding technique that has significant advantages compared to the fusion welding techniques in joining non weld able alloys by fusion, such as aluminum alloys.Three FSW seams of AA6061-T6 plates were made us-ing different FSW parameters. The structure of the FSW seams was investigated using X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron mi-croscope(SEM)and non destructive testing(NDT)techniques and their hardness was also measured. The dominated phase in the AA6061-T6 alloy and the FSW seams was theα-Al.The FSW seam had lower content of the secondary phases than the AA6061-T6 al-loy.The hardness of the FSW seams was decreased by about 30%compared to the AA6061-T6 alloy. The temperature distributions in the weld seams were also studied experimentally and numerically modeled and the results were in a good agreement. 展开更多

This study investigates the flexural performance of ultra-high performance concrete(UHPC)in reinforced concrete T-beams,focusing on the effects of interfacial treatments.Three concrete T-beam specimens were fabricated and tested:a control beam(RC-T),a UHPC-reinforced beam with a chiseled interface(UN-C-50F),and a UHPC-reinforced beam featuring both a chiseled interface and anchored steel rebars(UN-CS-50F).The test results indicated that both chiseling and the incorporation of anchored rebars effectively created a synergistic combination between the concrete T-beam and the UHPC reinforcement layer, with the UN-CS-50F exhibiting the highest flexural resistance. The cracking load and ultimate load of UN-CS-50F were 221.5%and 40.8%,respectively,higher than those of the RC-T.Finite element(FE)models were developed to provide further insights into the behavior of the UHPCreinforced T-beams,showing a maximumdeviation of just 8%when validated against experimental data.A parametric analysis varied the height, thickness, andmaterial strength of the UHPC reinforcement layer based on the validated FE model, revealing that increasing the UHPC layer thickness from 30 to 50 mm improved the ultimate resistance by 20%while reducing the UHPC reinforcement height from 440 to 300 mm led to a 10%decrease in bending resistance. The interfacial anchoring rebars significantly reduced crack propagation and enhanced stress redistribution, highlighting the importance of strengthening interfacial bonds and optimizing geometric parameters ofUHPCfor improved T-beam performance. These findings offer valuable insights for the design and retrofitting of UHPC-reinforced bridge girders. 展开更多

We are intrigued by the issues of shock instability, with a particular emphasis on numerical schemes that address the carbuncle phenomenon by reducing dissipation rather than increasing it.For a specific class of planar flow fields where the transverse direction exhibits vanishing but non-zero velocity components, such as a disturbed onedimensional(1D)steady shock wave,we conduct a formal asymptotic analysis for the Euler system and associated numerical methods. This analysis aims to illustrate the discrepancies among various low-dissipative numerical algorithms.Furthermore,a numerical stability analysis of steady shock is undertaken to identify the key factors underlying shock-stable algorithms. To verify the stability mechanism,a consistent,low-dissipation,and shock-stable HLLC-type Riemann solver is presented. 展开更多

The graded density impactor(GDI)dynamic loading technique is crucial for acquiring the dynamic physical property parameters of materials used in weapons. The accuracy and timeliness of GDI structural design are key to achieving controllable stress-strain rate loading. In this study,we have, for the first time, combined one-dimensional fluid computational software with machine learning methods. We first elucidated the mechanisms by which GDI structures control stress and strain rates.Subsequently,we constructed a machine learning model to create a structure-property response surface. The results show that altering the loading velocity and interlayer thickness has a pronounced regulatory effect on stress and strain rates. In contrast, the impedance distribution index and target thickness have less significant effects on stress regulation, although there is a matching relationship between target thickness and interlayer thickness.Compared with traditional design methods, the machine learning approach offers a10^(4)—10^(5)times increase in efficiency and the potential to achieve a global optimum, holding promise for guiding the design of GDI. 展开更多

The in-flight calibration and performance of the Solar Disk Imager(SDI),which is a pivotal instrument of the LyαSolar Telescope onboard the Advanced Space-based Solar Observatory mission, suggested a much lower spatial resolution than expected. In this paper,we developed the SDI point-spread function(PSF)and Image Bivariate Optimization Algorithm(SPIBOA)to improve the quality of SDI images. The bivariate optimization method smartly combines deep learning with optical system modeling.Despite the lack of information about the real image taken by SDI and the optical system function, this algorithm effectively estimates the PSF of the SDI imaging system directly from a large sample of observational data.We use the estimated PSF to conduct deconvolution correction to observed SDI images, and the resulting images show that the spatial resolution after correction has increased by a factor of more than three with respect to the observed ones.Meanwhile, our method also significantly reduces the inherent noise in the observed SDI images. The SPIBOA has now been successfully integrated into the routine SDI data processing, providing important support for the scientific studies based on the data. The development and application of SPIBOA also paves new ways to identify astronomical telescope systems and enhance observational image quality. Some essential factors and precautions in applying the SPIBOA method are also discussed. 展开更多

A suction casting experiment was conducted on Zr_(55)Cu_(30)Al_(10)Ni_(5)(at%)amorphous alloy.Using ProCAST software, numerical simulations were performed to analyze the filling and solidification processes. The velocity field during the filling process and the temperature field during the solidification process of the alloy melt under different process parameters were obtained.Based on the simulation results,a Zr-based amorphous alloy micro-gear was prepared via casting. The results indicate that increasing the suction casting temperature enhances the fluidity of alloy melt but induces unstable flow rate during filling, which is detrimental to complete filling.Zr-based amorphous micro-gears with a module of 0.6 mm,a tooth top diameter of 8 mm,and 10 teeth were prepared through the suction casting.X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry analyses confirm that the fabricated micro-gear exhibits characteristic amorphous structural features, demonstrating well-defined geometrical contours and satisfactory forming completeness. 展开更多

This study focuses on the thermal management of 4680-type cylindrical lithium-ion battery packs utilizing NCM811 chemistry. It establishes coupled multi-physics models for both immersion and serpentine cold plate cooling systems.Through a combination of numerical simulation and experimental validation, the technical advantages and mechanisms of immersion cooling are systematically explored.Simulation results indicate that under a 3C fast-charging condition(inlet temperature 20℃,flow rate 36 L/min),the immersion cooling structure 3demonstrates a triple enhancement in thermal performance compared to the cold plate structure 1:a 13.06%reduction in peak temperature,a 31.67%decrease in overall maximum temperature difference, and a 47.62%decrease in single-cell temperature deviation, while also reducing flow resistance by 33.61%.Furthermore,based on the immersion cooling model,a small battery module comprising seven cylindrical cells was designed for thermal runaway testing via nail penetration. The results show that the peak temperature of the triggered cell was limited to 437.6℃,with a controllable temperature rise gradient of only 3.35℃/s and a rapid cooling rate of 0.6℃/s.The maximum temperature rise of adjacent cells was just 64.8℃,effectively inhibiting thermal propagation.Post-test disassembly revealed that the non-triggered cells retained>99.2%of their original voltage and>99%structural integrity, confirming the module’s ability to achieve“localized failure with global stability.” 展开更多

[Objective]This study aims to develop a thermodynamically consistent phase-field framework for modeling the initiation and evolution of discontinuous structures in geomaterials.[Methods]Our model introduces crack driving forces derived from the volumetric-deviatoric strain decomposition strategy, incorporating distinct tension, compression, and shear degradation mechanisms.Inertia effects capture compaction-band formation driven by wave-like disturbances, grain crushing, and frictional rearrangement.A monolithic algorithm ensures numerical stability and rapid convergence.[Results]The framework reproduces tensile, shear, mixed tensile-shear,and compressive-shear failures using the Benzeggagh-Kenane criterion.Validation against benchmark simulations-including uniaxial compression of rock-like and triaxial compression of V-notched sandstone specimens-demonstrates accurate predictions of crack initiation stress, localization orientation, and energy dissipation.[Conclusions]The framework provides a unified and robust numerical tool for analyzing the spatiotemporal evolution of strain localization and fracture in geomaterials.[Significance]By linking microscale fracture dynamics with macroscale failure within a thermodynamically consistent scheme, this study advances predictive modeling of rock stability, slope failure, and subsurface energy systems, contributing to safer and more sustainable geotechnical practice. 展开更多

The finite volume method was applied to numerically simulate the bottom pressure field induced by regular waves, vehicles in calm water and vehicles in regular waves. The solution of Navier-Stokes(N-S)equations in the vicinity of numerical wave tank's boundary was forced towards the wave theoretical solution by incorporating momentum source terms, thereby reducing adverse effects such as wave reflection.Simulations utilizing laminar flow, turbulent flow, and ideal fluid models were all found capable of effectively capturing the waveform and bottom pressure of regular waves, agreeing well with experimental data.In predicting the bottom pressure field of the submerged vehicle, turbulent simulations considering fluid viscosity and boundary layer development provided more accurate predictions for the stern region than inviscid simulations.Due to sphere's diffractive effect, the sphere's bottom pressure field in waves is not a linear superposition of the wave's and the sphere's bottom pressure field. However,a slender submerged vehicle exhibits a weaker diffractive effect on waves, thus the submerged vehicle's bottom pressure field in waves can be approximated as a linear superposition of the wave's and the submerged vehicle's bottom pressure field, which simplifies computation and analysis. 展开更多

During the propagation of high-power lasers within internal channels, the laser beam heats the propagation medium, causing the thermal blooming effect that degrades the beam quality at the output. The intricate configuration of the optical path within the internal channel necessitates complex and time-consuming efforts to assess the impact of thermal blooming effect on the optical path.To meet the engineering need for rapid evaluation of thermal blooming effect in optical paths, this study proposed a rapid simulation method for the thermal blooming effect in internal optical paths based on the finite element method. This method discretized the fluid region into infinitesimal elements and employed finite element method for flow field analysis.A simplified analytical model of the flow field region in complex internal channels was established, and regions with similar thermal blooming effect were divided within this model.Based on the calculated optical path differences within these regions, numerical simulations of phase distortion caused by thermal blooming were conducted. The calculated result were compared with those obtained using the existing methods. The findings reveal that for complex optical paths, the discrepancy between the two approaches is less than 3.6%,with similar phase distortion patterns observed. For L-type units, this method and the existing methods identify the same primary factors influencing aberrations and exhibit consistent trends in their variation. This method was used to analyze the impact of thermal blooming effect in a straight channel under different gravity directions. The results show that phase distortion varies with changes in the direction of gravity, and the magnitude of the phase difference is strongly correlated with the component of gravity perpendicular to the optical axis.Compared to the existing methods, this approach offers greater flexibility, obviates the need for complex custom analysis programming. The analytical results of this method enable a rapid assessment of the thermal blooming effect in optical paths within the internal channel. This is especially useful during the engineering design. These results also provide crucial references for developing strategies to suppress thermal blooming effect. 展开更多

Hydrodynamical cosmological simulations of galaxy formation such as IllustrisTNG or Auriga have shown considerable success in approximately matching many galaxy properties, but their treatment of the star-forming interstellar medium(ISM)has relied on heuristic sub-grid models. However, recent high-resolution simulations of the ISM that directly resolve the regulation of star formation suggest different mean relations for the dependences of pressure and star formation rate on the average gas density. In this study,we adopt such a modern, physically grounded parameterization inspired by the TIGRESS small-scale simulations. We dub this model TEQS and use it for a detailed comparative analysis of the formation and evolution of a Milky Way-sized galaxy when compared with the widely used TNG model.By employing high-resolution simulations in tall box setups,we first investigate the structural differences expected for these two models when applied to different self-gravitating gas surface densities. Our results indicate that TEQS produces considerably thinner gaseous layers and can be expected to form stellar distributions with smaller scale-height than TNG,especially at higher surface density. To test whether this induces systematic structural differences in cosmological galaxy formation simulations,we carry out zoom-in simulations of 12 galaxies taken from the set of Milky Way-sized galaxies that have been studied in the Auriga project.Comparing results for these galaxies shows that disk galaxies formed with the TEQS model have on average very similar stellar mass but are more concentrated in their central regions and exhibit smaller stellar radii compared to those formed with the TNG model. The differences in the scale-heights of the formed stellar disks are only marginal, however, suggesting that other factors for setting the thickness of the disk are more important than the applied ISM equation-of-state model.Overall, the predicted galaxy structure is quite similar for TNG and TEQS despite significant differences in the employed star formation law, demonstrating that feedback processes are more important in regulating the stellar mass than the precise star formation law itself. 展开更多

This research investigates the bending response of folded multi-celled tubes(FMTs)fabricated by folded metal sheets.A three-point bending test for FMTs with circular and square sections is designed and introduced. The base numerical models are correlated with physical experiments and a static crashworthiness analysis of six FMT configurations to assess their energy absorption characteristics. The influences of thickness, sectional shape, and load direction on the bending response are studied. Results indicate that increasing the thickness of the tube and radian of the inner tube enhances the crashworthiness performance of FMT,yielding a 20.50%increase in mean crushing force,a 55.53%increase in specific energy absorption, and an 18.05%decrease in peak crushing force compared to traditional multi-celled tubes(TMTs).A theoretical analysis of the specific energy absorption indicates that FMTs outperform TMTs,particularly when the peak crushing force is prominent. This study highlights the innovative and practical potential of FMTs to improve the crashworthiness of thin-walled structures. 展开更多

Steel cylindrical shells are widely used in engineering structures due to their high strength-to-weight ratio, but they are vulnerable to buckling under axial loads. To address this limitation,fiber-reinforced polymer(FRP)composites have emerged as promising materials for structural reinforcement. This study investigates the buckling behavior of steel cylindrical shells reinforced with inner and outer layers of polymer composite materials under axial compression.Using analytical and numerical modeling methods, the critical buckling loads for different reinforcement options were evaluated.Two-sided glass fiber reinforced plastic(GFRP)or carbon fiber reinforced plastic(CFRP)coatings,as well as combined coatings with layers of different composites, were considered.GFRP+CFRPIn the calculations, the coatings were treated as homogeneous orthotropic materials with equivalent averaged elastic characteristics. The numerical analysis revealed that CFRP reinforcement achieved the highest increase in buckling load, with improvements ranging from 9.84%to 47.29%,depending on the composite thickness and steel shell thickness.GFRP reinforcement, while beneficial, demonstrated a lower effectiveness, with buckling load increases between 5.89%and 19.30%.The hybrid reinforcement provided an optimal balance, improving buckling resistance by GFRP+CFRP6.94%to 43.95%.Statistical analysis further identified composite type and thickness as the most significant factors affecting buckling performance. The findings suggest that CFRP is the preferred reinforcement material, especially when applied to thin-walled cylindrical shells, while hybrid reinforcements can be effectively utilized for structures requiring a balance between stiffness and ductility. These insights provide a foundation for optimizing FRP reinforcement strategies to enhance the structural integrity of steel shells in engineering applications. 展开更多

Numerical modelling is an effective technique to improve the understanding of outburst initiation mechanisms and to take appropriate measures to address their threats.Based on the existing two-way sequential coupling method, two typical types of outbursts,i.e.the gas pocket outburst and the dynamic fracturing outburst, have been successfully simulated using field data from a coalfield in central China. The geological structure commonly observed in the coalfield, known as the‘bedding shear zone’,contributes to the gas pocket outbursts in the region. The model for this type of outburst simulates mininginduced stress and gas pressure distributions during the outburst initiation stage and the subsequent development stage. Both coal ejection and gas release are observed in the model, and the simulation results are consistent with mine site observations,i.e.the amount of ejected coal, outburst cavity profile, and gas release rate change prior to an outburst. The second type of outburst is attributed to gas accumulation and elevated gas pressure due to the gassy floor seam and the heterogeneity in the floor strata, which is explained by the dynamic fracturing theory. While the dynamic coal ejection phenomenon is not captured in the simulation, the abrupt release of retained gas from a floor coal seam is successfully replicated. Both outburst models reveal that abnormal gas emission trends can be used as indicators of an upcoming outburst. The results of this study are expected to provide new insights into the outburst initiation mechanisms and outburst prevention measures. 展开更多
