We present the experimental demonstration of nondestructive detection of ^(171)Yb atoms in a magneto-optical trap(MOT) based on phase shift measurement induced by the atoms on a weak off-resonant laser beam. After loading a green MOT of ^(171)Yb atoms, the phase shift is obtained with a two-color Mach–Zehnder interferometer by means of ±45 MHz detuning with respect to the ^(1)S_(0)–^(1)P_(1) transition. We measured a phase shift of about 100 mrad corresponding to an atom count of around 5 × 10^(5). This demonstrates that it is possible to obtain the number of atoms without direct destructive measurement compared with the absorption imaging method. This scheme could be an important approach towards a high-precision lattice clock for clock operation through suppression of the impact of the Dick effect. 展开更多

The fundamental shear horizontal(SH0) wave has several unique features that are attractive for long-range nondestructive testing(NDT). By a careful design of the geometric configuration, electromagnetic acoustic transducers(EMATs) have the capability to generate a wide range of guided wave modes, such as Lamb waves and shear-horizontal(SH) waves in plates. However, the performance of EMATs is influenced by their parameters. To evaluate the performance of periodic permanent magnet(PPM) EMATs, a distributed-line-source model is developed to calculate the angular acoustic field cross-section in the far-field. Numerical analysis is conducted to investigate the performance of such EMATs with different geometric parameters, such as period and number of magnet arrays, and inner and outer coil widths. Such parameters have a great influence on the directivity of the generated SH0 waves that arises mainly in the amplitude and width of both main and side lobes. According to the numerical analysis, these parameters are optimized to obtain better directivity. Optimized PPM EMATs are designed and used for NDT of strip plates. Experimental results show that the lateral boundary of the strip plate has no perceivable influence on SHO-wave propagation, thus validating their used in NDT. The proposed model predicts the radiation pattern ofPPM EMATs, and can be used for their parameter optimization. 展开更多

Two varieties, Yuexinzhan and Guangchao 3, were used to study leaf thickness in rice in this experiment. The thickness of the leaf blade was measured by the nondestructive leaf thickness instrument, which was modified from the thickness instrument for steel objects (John Bull, England). The contacting area between the leaf and the probe of the instrument was 0.5 cm^2. There was no significant difference between the thickness of steel materials measured by the nondestructive rice leaf thickness instrument and the micrometer. The correlation between the thickness of the rice leaf blade measured by the nondestructive rice leaf thickness instrument and the specific leaf weight (SLW) was significant (P 〈 0.05 or P〈 0.01). The results also showed that the rice leaf thickness was uneven and asymmetric. The thickness and SLW of flag leaf tended to increase from the base to the tip of the leaf blade. The middle part of the second and third top leaf was the thickest, but no significant difference in thickness between the basal part and the fore part was found. Drawing a line on the main vein in the top three leaves, the left part was thinner than the right part. The thickness of the lower leaves (6/0-9/0) on the main culm tended to increase with increasing positions of the leaves in the early and middle stages, but the tendency was not the same for the higher leaves (10/0 upwards), although the higher leaves (10/0 upward) were thicker than the lower leaves (9/0 or downward). Furthermore, different CO2 concentrations (550±30, 460 ± 30 μmol mol^-1) in the growth boxes had no effect on the thickness of rice leaf blades. It can be concluded that the measurement of rice leaf thickness using the nondestructive rice leaf thickness instrument is simple, precise, and nondestructive. 展开更多

In order to develop a highly sensitive material for nondestructive testing(NDT),(Tb_(0.3) Dy_(0.7))Fe_(1.95) thin films were deposited on FeCo substrates at room temperature by magnetron sputtering and annealed. The magnetostrictive properties and the detection efficiency of the composite films were investigated. Results demonstrate that the detection efficiency roughly shows regular consistency with the magnetostrictive strain of the TbDyFe films. Heat treatment has a great effect on the crystalline state and the magnetostrictive strain of the composite materials. The as-deposited(Tb_(0.3) Dy_(0.7))Fe_(1.95) films are amorphous, and the saturation magnetostriction(ls) is only 90 ppm. However, the nanostructured crystalline REFe2 is partially separated out in amorphous matrix after annealing at 600C for 1 h, and the ls increases to 265 ppm. Simultaneously, the detection efficiency of the composite materials is obviously improved compared to that of the as-deposited films. The detection signal of traditional FeCo strip is0.4 V at the excitation power of 1.0 P and frequency of 128 kHz and that of the strip increases significantly by depositing one layer of(Tb_(0.3) Dy_(0.7))Fe_(1.95) film. The detection signal of the composite material annealed at 600C is the best, even reaching saturation value of 2.5 V(1.0 P, 128 kHz). The results may provide us with a method for preparing new materials for NDT. 展开更多

To study the distribution law and random characteristics of casting defects in steel castings,24 civil engineering structural cast steel joints were divided into two groups:simple cast steel joints and complex cast steel joints.Three kinds of nondestructive testing(NDT)methods, namely, visual, magnetic particle, and ultrasonic inspections, were used to detect the macroscopic defects in joints. The NDT results were then statistically analyzed. The results show that the unfused core support is a common defect of complex cast steel joints, and the defect can be seen visually,so excavation and repair welding should be carried out before castings leave factories.Casting cracks are extremely likely to occur in the intersection area of tubes, which is called the ultrasonic inspection blind zone. The occurrence probability of gas pores on simple cast steel joints is the largest, and the occurrence probability of core support incomplete fusions on complex cast steel joints is the largest. However, when cast steel joints are counted as a whole sample, the occurrence probability of gas pores is larger than that of core support incomplete fusions. Therefore,it is the most common defect in cast steel joints. 展开更多

To address the difficulty in testing and calibrating the stress gradient in the depth direction of mechanical components, a new technology of nondestructive testing and characterization of the residual stress gradient... To address the difficulty in testing and calibrating the stress gradient in the depth direction of mechanical components, a new technology of nondestructive testing and characterization of the residual stress gradient field by ultrasonic method is proposed based on acoustoelasticity theory. By carrying out theoretical analysis, the sensitivity coefficients of different types of ultrasonic are obtained by taking the low carbon steel(12%C) as a research object. By fixing the interval distance between sending and receiving transducers, the mathematical expressions of the change of stress and the variation of time are established. To design one sending-one receiving and oblique incidence ultrasonic detection probes, according to Snell law, the critically refracted longitudinal wave(LCR wave) is excited at a certain depth of the fixed distance of the tested components. Then, the relationship between the depth of LCR wave detection and the center frequency of the probe in Q235 steel is obtained through experimental study. To detect the stress gradient in the depth direction, a stress gradient LCR wave detection model is established, through which the stress gradient formula is derived by the relationship between center frequency and detecting depth. A C-shaped stress specimen of Q235 steel is designed to conduct stress loading tests, and the stress is measured with the five group probes at different center frequencies. The accuracy of ultrasonic testing is verified by X-ray stress analyzer. The stress value of each specific depth is calculated using the stress gradient formula. Accordingly, the ultrasonic characterization of residual stress field is realized. Characterization results show that the stress gradient distribution is consistent with the simulation in ANSYS. The new technology can be widely applied in the detection of the residual stress gradient field caused by mechanical processing, such as welding and shot peening. 展开更多

The defects of remanufacturing coatings, such as micro-cracks,micro-pores,oxide inclusion, and fatigue cracks producing in the service process have great influence on the qualities and lives of remanufacturing coatings. This paper summarizes several methods used for detecting coating defects, including ray method, ultrasonic method, eddy method, magnetic memory method, acoustic emission method. The advantages and limitations of the above methods are also discussed. The detection results by ray method are visualized, and it is easy to achieve qualitative, quantitative and locating detection, but this method has incipient fault and low detecting sensitivity.Ultrasonic detection can exactly locate defects, and it is sensitive to plane defects, but the detection has dead zones, and it is inconvenient to perform qualitative and quantitative measurement.Eddy method detects fast, but it only can detect conductive materials, and is difficult to achieve qualitative, quantitative and locating detection.Magnetic memory method is sensitive to ferromagnetic materials, but it can not detect nonferromagnetic materials and is difficult to attain quantitative measurement.Acoustic emission method has an extensive detection range and high sensitivity, but it has big noise interference, and is hard to achieve qualitative detection. In conclusion,it describes the application prospect of each method for detecting coating. 展开更多

This paper introduced a nondestructive testing method to evaluate the dynamic elastic modulus of cement paste. Moreover, the effect of water-cement ratio and conventional admixtures on the dynamic elastic modulus of cement paste was investigated, in which three kinds of admixtures were taken into account including viscosity modifying admixture (VMA), silica.fume (SF), and shrinkage-reducing admixture (SRA). The experimental results indicate that the dynamic elastic modulus of cement paste increases with decreasing water-cement ratio. The addition of SF increases the dynamic elastic modulus, however, the overdosage of VMA causes its reduction. SRA reduces the dynamic elastic modulus at early age without affecting it in later period. Finally, a multiscale micromechanics approach coupled with a hydration model CEMHYD3D and percolation theory is utilized to predict the elastic modulus of cement paste, and the predictive results by the model are in accordance with the experimental data. 展开更多

For our research, a new hybrid experimental-computational method is presented. We applied a least squares fitting method (LSFM) to reconstruct the wood moisture content (WMC) from the data measured with a planar capacitance sensor. A boundary element method (BEM) was used to compute the relationship between capacitance and the dielectric constant. A functional relationship between MC and the dielectric constant was identified by LSFM. The agreement of this final computation result with the experimental data indicates that this method can be used to estimate the WMC quickly and effectively with engineering analysis. Compared with popular statistical methods, a large number of experiments are avoided, some costs of testing are reduced and the efficiency of testing is enhanced. 展开更多

Requirements for the service performance of aeronautic microelectronic components are increasingly strict. However, sever issues, that the acquisition of the service performance such as micro-mechanical properties is destructive, limit the subsequent application of the tested components.Addressing this issue, this paper proposes a nondestructive acquisition method of the micro-mechanical properties of the accelerometer micro-components,based on analyzing surface traits. To select qualified components without damage,we firstly developed a quasi-static microtensile tester and then established a combination prediction model of mechanical properties based on micro-milled surface traits. The model works due to the thin-walled structure, which makes the machined surface traits have significant influences on the mechanical properties such as Young’s modulus, yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation at break.Surface roughness, surface structure, and surface anisotropy are extracted to comprehensively present surface traits from different aspects. For improving the practicability of the model, the principal component analysis(PCA)is adopted to reduce high-dimensional traits explanatory variable space into two dimensions, and regression analysis models are comparative established in predicting the mechanical properties.Residuals analysis and error analysis are carried out to show the prediction accuracy. The maximum prediction error is about 10.62%,but the significance levels in the t-test of the predicted Young’s modulus and yield strength are not ideal. Therefore, kernel support vector regression(SVR)is imported to improve the prediction ability of the combination prediction model. The residuals analysis result shows that SVR is effective in enhancing the prediction ability of this model. 展开更多

Nondestructive evaluation of melon quality is in great need of comprehensive study.Soluble solids content(SSC)and firmness are the two indicators of melon internal quality that mostly a®ect consumer acceptance. To provide guidance for fruit classification, internal quality standards was preliminarily established through sensory test,as:Melon with SSC over 12Brix,firmness 4–5.5 kgf·cm^(-2)2 were considered as satisfactory class sample;and SSC over 10Brix,¯rmness 3.5–6.5 kgf·cm^(-2) as average class sample. The near infrared(NIR)nondestructive detection program was set as spectra collected from the stylar-end,Brix expressed by the average SSC of inner and outer mesocarp, each cultivar of melon was detected with its own optimum integration time, and the second derivative algorithm was used to equalize them.Using wavelength selected by genetic algorithms(GA),a robust SSC model of mix-cultivar melon was established, the root mean standard error of cross-validation(RMSECV)was 0.99 and the ratio performance deviation(RPD)nearly reached 3.0,which almost could meet the accuracy requirement of 1.5Brix.Firmness model of mix-cultivar melon was acceptable but inferior. 展开更多

We successfully obtained 3D skeletal images of Hyla suweonensis, employing a nondestructive method by applying appropriate anesthesia and limiting the radiation dose. H. suweonensis is a tree frog endemic to Korea and is on the list of endangered species. Previous studies have employed caliper-based measurements and two-dimensional (2D) X-ray imaging for anatomical analyses of the skeletal system or bone types of H. suweonensis. In this work we reconstructed three-dimensional (3D) skeletal images of H. suweonensis, utilizing a nondestructive micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) with a short scan and low radiation dose (i.e. 4 min and 0.16 Gy). Importantly, our approach can be applied to the imaging of 3D skeletal systems of other endangered frog species, allowing both versatile and high contrast images of anatomical structures without causing any significant damages to the living animal. 展开更多
