However, urbanisation influences predator–prey interactions, leading to high predation rates in urban areas, in the UK notably through the presence of large populations of domestic cats and increased populations of synanthropic species, such as rats and squirrels. These high predation rates are assumed to be a significant cause of reproductive failure in birds. Some ecologists advocate for the use of buffer zones with reduced human influence to reduce potential hunting pressure in eco-sensitive areas. However, the buffer effect on predation rates of nesting birds in suburban areas is rarely investigated. In this study, we investigated how edge effects (how close nest sites are to housing) and nest height (i.e., ground vs. above-ground) affected nest predation rates in a suburban park using camera traps to monitor artificial nests containing quail eggs. Our hypothesis was that nests in the buffer area (<300 m inward from university boundary) and at low height would suffer higher predation rates than nests in the core area (>300 m from the university boundary) and at height, as the buffer zone effect, and ease of access to ground predators would result in higher predation rates. We found no significant effect of nest height in nest predation rates. However, contrary to our expectations, nests in the core zone suffered higher predation rates than those in the buffer zone, and corvids were responsible for almost half of the egg loss events. We speculate that this may be a consequence of higher levels of anthropogenic disturbance (e.g., pedestrians, dog walking, vehicles) adjacent to our buffer zone acting as a deterrent to avian nest predators. This work suggests that protecting urban sites from disturbance may not always act to support bird abundance.展开更多

Birds can be attentive to the clutch all of the time or, particularly if only one parent incubates, attentiveness may be quite low. Attentiveness is related to egg size with large eggs having high attentiveness, whereas small eggs (<10 g) can have attentiveness ranging from 50% to 100%. Previous studies have suggested that incubation duration is a function of attentiveness albeit for small birds. This study tested the hypothesis that, after controlling for egg size and phylogeny, incubation duration would be a function of attentiveness. Data for 444 bird species representing 24 orders were analysed. Whilst egg mass had a significant relationship with incubation duration, there was no relationship with attentiveness for all of the species or a subset of the passerines. Despite egg temperature drops during an incubation recess, average day-time and night-time temperatures are similar in a range of species. Re-examination of previously reported temperature profiles recorded by dummy eggs over a 24-h period shows that after an incubation recess there seems to be an additional heat flux that raises egg temperature above that seen during night-time periods of constant incubation. The reasons why eggs under intermittent incubation are not considerably cooler than eggs during constant incubation are discussed.展开更多

In this study we analyzed the nest site selection of loggerhead and leatherback turtles and the factors correlated with that selection at Inhaca Island. The spatial position of the nests was recorded during sea turtles nests monitoring and six nesting seasons were used. Satellite images of Inhaca were used to characterize some of the beach features that might be correlated with nest site selection. Nest distribution analysis revealed that loggerhead turtles tend to spread their nests along the entire beach, but a higher aggregation of nests was evident at the northern most section of the eastern coast. Leatherback turtles tend to nest in a restricted area, with approximately 40% nests at the central sections of the coast. Beach height was the physical variable significantly correlated to loggerhead's nest density (r = 0.309, N = 125, P 〈 0.01) while fin grain particles (specifically 0.125 mm grain size particles) (r = 0.399, N = 125, P 〈 0.01) and organic content (r = 0.218, N = 125, P 〈 0.05) were the variables significantly correlated to leatherback's nest density. No other factors investigated affected nest site selection of either species.展开更多

We investigated its nest predators, nest-site selection and nest success at the Laojunshan National Nature Reserve in Sichuan, China in order to identify the precise nesting-habitat requirements of the species, and to test whether the nest-site-selection cues, preferred by the Emei Shan Liocichla, are positively associated with nest success. Methods: We used infrared cameras to determine nest predators. We compared the microhabitat attributes between nest and random sites, as well as successful and failed nests. We used Binary Logistic Regression to determine the most important variables affecting nest-site selection of the Emei Shan Liocichla. We used the nest survival analysis in Program MARK to estimate daily nest survival rates(DSR). Nest success was calculated using the Mayfield method. Results: In total 56 nests were found. The DSR for all nests that contained at least one egg was 0.9564 ± 0.0091(95 % CI 0.9346–0.9711)(n = 40), while the total nest success was 27.5 %. We identified four categories of predators in 10 nest predation events, i.e. squirrels(n = 5), snakes(n = 3), raptors(n = 1) and wasps(n = 1). We found that:(1) nest predation was the primary reason for nest failure of the Emei Shan Liocichla,(2) tree cover, bamboo cover, liana abundance and distance to forest edge or gap were the most important variables affecting nest-site selection of this species, and(3) the nest-site-selection variables we measured appeared not to be positively associated with nest success. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that the Emei Shan Liocichla tended to select nest sites near forest edges or gaps with good concealment and that nest-site selection by this species was nonrandom but not necessarily adaptive. Reducing forest-edge development and protecting bamboo stands should be effective for conservation of this species.展开更多

In this study, artificial nesting materials were placed in 43 potential nesting sites before the nesting season, 11 of which were used. Additionally, eight nests were built at natural sites without artificial nesting materials provided. Seven environmental variables were measured at each nest site: distance from water, height from water surface, sunlight duration, nearest bank slope, nest site slope, vegetation coverage and concealment. Statistical analyses indicated that concealment was significantly different between used and unused nest sites, with concealment being significantly correlated to the use of materials- placed sites. In comparing the nests at artificial vs. natural sites, only the nearest bank slope differed significantly. Further, principal component analysis of natural nests indicated that the duration of nest exposure to sunlight and vegetation coverage were more influential than the other factors studied.展开更多

文摘Edible bird's nest(EBN),abundant in sialic acid(SA)has been recognized as a natural substance beneficial to brain development and cognitive ability. In order to investigate active component of EBN,sialylated glycopeptides(SCP)were extracted from EBN by 60%ethanol after trypsin hydrolysis and its effects on central nervous system was evaluated in lipopolysaccharide(LPS)-induced neuroinflammation mice.EBN,SCP,and SA pretreatment and intervention reduced interleukin-1β(IL-1β),tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α),and interleukin-6(IL-6)levels in hippocampus and cortex, meanwhile inhibited the activation of microglia, astrogliosis and neuron apoptosis, which were consistent with the learning and memory improvement and anti-depression effects in behavioral tests. The counts of leukocytes, neutrophils and monocytes,as well as IL-1β,TNF-α,and IL-6 levels in peripheral circulation were significantly reduced by SCP.Results of plasma metabolomics suggested SCP up-regulated energy metabolism, promoted the recovery of primary and secondary bile acid metabolism and indole metabolism, where microbiota may involve.16S rDNA sequencing of colonic contents showed EBN,SCP and SA repaired dysbacteriosis in LPS-treated mice by significantly up-regulating the anti-inflammatory Muribaculaceae and inhibiting pro-inflammatory related Desulfovibrio and Candidatus_Saccharimonas.In addition, both EBN and SCP could significantly enrich Aerococcus, while SA could specifically enrich Prevotellaceae_UCG_001.The gut-brain axis was preliminarily established, and SCP may have the potential to be a functional factor for neuroprotection applied in EBN industry.
文摘Urban green spaces and parks offer opportunities for retaining and increasing bird richness, diversity, and species abundance. This work suggests that protecting urban sites from disturbance may not always act to support bird abundance.
文摘Avian incubation is characterised by the contact between the eggs and the bird's skin to transfer heat to increase egg temperature above ambient conditions. The reasons why eggs under intermittent incubation are not considerably cooler than eggs during constant incubation are discussed.
文摘Nest site selection represents an important reproductive strategy for sea turtles as it can strongly affect the development and survival of the offsprings and the reproductive fitness of the adults. No other factors investigated affected nest site selection of either species.

文摘Nest predation is the leading cause of reproductive failure in birds and a major driving force in the evolution of anti-predation strategies.Current studies on the anti-predation strategies of birds driven by predation pressure have mainly focused on adults. However, the detection and behavioral responses of nestlings toward predation risk require further investigation. In this study,we examined nestling responses to predator sounds. Two species of nestlings, the Reed Parrotbill(Paradoxornis heudei)and Vinous-throated Parrotbill(Sinosuthora webbiana),were exposed to the Sparrowhawk(Accipiter nisus, less common)and Oriental Magpie(Pica serica, more common),which are predator species, the Oriental Turtle Dove(Streptopelia orientalis),which is a commonly found harmless species, and background noise. Our findings revealed that compared to pre-playback of natural begging and playback of background noise and Oriental Turtle Dove sounds, playback of the two predator types decreased the total begging time and total number of calls of the two nestlings species, with the calls of the Sparrowhawk leading to greater suppression of nestling begging behavior than those of the Oriental Magpie. Therefore, our results indicated that these nestlings were able to distinguish predators from harmless species based on auditory cues.

文摘Sparse array design has significant implications for improving the accuracy of direction of arrival(DOA)estimation of non-circular(NC)signals.We propose an extended nested array with a filled sensor(ENAFS)based on the hole-filling strategy.Specifically,we first introduce the improved nested array(INA)and prove its properties.Subsequently,we extend the sum-difference coarray(SDCA)by adding an additional sensor to fill the holes. Thus the larger uniform degrees of freedom(uDOFs)and virtual array aperture(VAA)can be abtained, and the ENAFS is designed. Finally, the simulation results are given to verify the superiority of the proposed ENAFS in terms of DOF,mutual coupling and estimation performance.
文摘Objective:To observe and study the practical value of adopting nest nursing in neonatal nursing. Methods:From January 2023 to January 2024,a total of 382 newborns that were admitted to the hospital were selected to carry out this study. They were divided into two groups, the routine group and the observation group, with 191 cases in each group.Newborns in the routine group were given basic nursing intervention, while those in the observation group were given bird’s nest nursing intervention. The growth and development indexes, the occurrence of adverse reactions, the improvement of gastrointestinal function, and the nursing satisfaction rate of their families were analyzed and studied. Results:The growth and development indexes of newborns in the observation group were significantly better than those in the routine group(P<0.05).The incidence of adverse neonatal reactions in the observation group was significantly lower than that in the routine group(P<0.05).The improvement of gastrointestinal function of newborns in the observation group was significantly better than that in the routine group(P<0.05).The nursing satisfaction rate of newborns’families in the observation group was significantly higher than that in the routine group(P<0.05).Conclusion:As for the key points of clinical newborn care, the actual effect of adopting the bird’s nest nursing intervention is more prominent, and its main function is to promote the growth and development of newborns. It can not only avoid the risk of adverse reactions in many aspects but also improve the gastrointestinal function of newborns,so that the nursing satisfaction rate of family members is obviously improved. It is recommended to be applied and popularized in clinical practice.

文摘Background: The Emei Shan Liocichla(Liocichla omeiensis) is a globally vulnerable babbler, endemic to southwestern China. Reducing forest-edge development and protecting bamboo stands should be effective for conservation of this species.
文摘The quality of a breeding site may have major fitness consequences.A fundamental step to understanding the process of nest-site selection is the identification of the information individuals use to choose high-quality nest sites. For secondary cavity-nesting bird species that do not add nest lining material, organic remains (faeces, pellets)accumulated inside nest cavities during previous breeding events may be a cue for high-quality nest-sites,as they contain information about past successful breeding and may improve thermal insulation of eggs during incubation. However, cavities in which breeding was successful might also contain more nest-dwelling ectoparasites than unoccupied cavities, offering an incentive for prospective parents to avoid them.We exposed breeding cavity-nesting lesser kestrels (Falco naumanni)to nestbox dyads consisting of a dirty (with a thick layer of organic substrate) and a clean nestbox (without organic material).Dirty nestboxes were strongly preferred, being occupied earlier and more frequently than clean ones.Hatching success in dirty nestboxes was significantly higher than in clean ones, suggesting a positive effect of organic nest material on incubation efficiency, while nestbox dirtiness did not significantly affect clutch and brood size.Nestlings from dirty nestboxes had significantly higher ectoparasite load than those from clean nestboxes soon after egg hatching, but this difference was not evident a few days later.Nest substrate did not significantly affect nestling growth. We concluded that nest substrate is a key driver of nest-site choice in lesser kestrels, although the adaptive value of such a strong preference appears elusive and may be context-dependent.

文摘Nest-site and nesting material used by the Chinese alligator (Alligator sinensis) was studied at the Gaojingmiao Breeding Farm, Langxi County, Anhui, China from May to September 2009. Further, principal component analysis of natural nests indicated that the duration of nest exposure to sunlight and vegetation coverage were more influential than the other factors studied.
