For realism,the ultimate rational standard is the law of non-contradiction because the basic proposition for the intellect requires:Being is not non-being.The One of Plotinus is beyond being,but the Intellect,emanated from the One,has being and is also one.With essence and existence,Aquinas endeavors to serve faith with reason in that God is defined as being itself according to the name of God who revealed to Moses.Writing for the atheists in his Five Ways,Aquinas defines God with five names,and his conclusion from the Third Way is the existence of a necessary being.The One is timeless without will;the necessary being exists in time;if I Am Who I Am is understood rationally with essence and existence,then the Biblical God becomes a god of intellect.Being itself is neither life-giving nor holy.Regarding time,being itself can be viewed as a compromise of the One and the necessary being of the Five Ways. 展开更多

In situ tensile testing in a scanning electron microscope(SEM)in conjunction with high-resolution electron backscatter diffraction(HR-EBSD)under load was used to characterize the evolution of geometrically necessary dislocation(GND)densities at individual grain boundaries as a function of applied strain in a polycrystalline Mg-4Al alloy.The increase in GND density was investigated at plastic strains of 0%,0.6%,2.2%,3.3% from the area including 76 grains and correlated with(i)geometric compatibility between slip systems across grain boundaries,and(ii)plastic incompatibility.We develop expressions for the grain boundary GND density evolution as a function of plastic strain and plastic incompatibility,from which uniaxial tensile stress-strain response of polycrystalline Mg-4Al are computed and compared with experimental measurement.The findings in this study contribute to understanding the mechanisms governing the strain hardening response of single-phase polycrystalline alloys and more reliable prediction of mechanical behaviors in diverse microstructures. 展开更多

Nanoindentation and high resolution electron backscatter diffraction(EBSD) were combined to examine the elastic modulus and hardness of α and β phases,anisotropy in residual elastic stress strain fields and distributions of geometrically necessary dislocation(GND) density around the indentations within TA15 titanium alloy.The nano-indention tests were conducted on α and β phases,respectively.The residual stress strain fields surrounding the indentation were calculated through crosscorrelation method from recorded patterns.The GND density distribution around the indentation was calculated based on the strain gradient theories to reveal the micro-mechanism of plastic deformation.The results indicate that the elastic modulus and hardness for α p hase are 129.05 GPas and 6.44 GPa,while for β phase,their values are 109.80 GPa and 4.29 GPa,respectively.The residual Mises stress distribution around the indentation is relatively heterogeneous and significantly influenced by neighboring soft β phase.The region with low residual stress around the indentation is accompanied with markedly high a type and prismatic-GND density. 展开更多

Our aim is to derive some necessary and sufficient conditions on the Gaussian noise in order to solve the corresponding heat equation. We investigate this problem invoking two differen t met hods, respectively, based on variance compu tations and on pat h-wise considerations in Besov spaces. We are going to see that, as anticipated, both approaches lead to the same necessary and sufficient condition on the noise. In addition, the path-wise approach brings out regularity results for the solution. 展开更多

Permanent loss of vital functions after central nervous system (CNS) injury, e.g., blindness in traumatic optic nerve (ON) injury or paralysis in spinal cord injury, occurs in part because axons in the adult mammalian CNS do not regenerate after injury. Growth failure is due to the diminished intrinsic regenerative capacity of mature neurons and the inhibitory environment of the adult CNS. Neutralizing extracellular inhibitory molecules genetically or pharmacologically yields only limited regeneration and functional recovery, highlighting the critical importance of neuron-intrinsic factors. 展开更多

Necessary and sufficient conditions for azeotropy in reactive mixtures are derived in terms of elemental composition, which shows that in the space of elemental compositions, they take the same functional form as the conditions for azeotropy in non-reactive mixtures. The production of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) is taken as an example. It is found that there are a 'pseudo' intermediate-boiling ternary reactive azeotrope at p = 101.325kPa and two 'real' ternary reactive azeotropes at p = 101.325 Pa. The introduced elemental compositions also reduce the dimensionality of the phase diagrams and provide a natural set of variables for visualization of phase behavior. 展开更多

The error of the fundamental solution cited in some boundary element books Is pointed out after an examination of the fundamental solution. Furthermore,a necessary and sufficient boundary integral equation is given for the problem and compared with the conventional boundary integral equation. Numerical results show that great errors of the boundary shear stresses obtained by the conventional boundary integral equation appear with a small error of torsion stiffness. Meanwhile,the necessary and sufficient;boundary integral equation always gives accurate results. 展开更多
