Common solutions used by Western medicine to treat musculoskeletal pain include rehabilitation programs and drugs, but their results are sometimes disappointing. OBJECTIVE: To study the effects of self-administered exercises based on Tuina techniques on the pain intensity caused by PRMD of professional orchestra musicians, using numeric visual scale (NVS). DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS AND INTERVENTIONS: We performed a prospective, controlled single-blinded, randomized study with musicians suffering from PRMD. Participating musicians were randomly distributed into the experimental (n = 39) and the control (n = 30) groups. After an individual diagnostic assessment, specific Tuina self-administered exercises were developed and taught to the participants. Musicians were instructed to repeat the exercises every day for 3 weeks. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Pain intensity was measured by NVS before the intervention and after 1, 3, 5, 10, 15 and 20 d of treatment. The procedure was the same for the control group, however the Tuina exercises were executed in points away from the commonly-used acupuncture points. RESULTS: In the treatment group, but not the control group, pain intensity was significantly reduced on days 1, 3, 5, 10, 15 and 20. CONCLUSION: The results obtained are consistent with the hypothesis that self-administered exercises based on Tuina techniques could help professional musicians controlling the pain caused by PRMD. Although our results are very promising, further studies are needed employing a larger sample size and double blinding designs.展开更多

The objective of this study was to assess the otological damage of military music professionals in Cotonou. <strong>Methods:</strong> This was an analytical cross-sectional study carried out from July 15 to November 15, 2019. It focused on soldiers from the Music Squadron and the first Motorized Intervention Battalion of Camp Guézo in Cotonou. <strong>Results:</strong> 110 soldiers were included. The mean age was 34.3 ± 6.2 years. The sex ratio was 17.3. The instruments used were wind (74.5%), percussion (23.6%) and string (1.8%). The average length of service in the Music Squadron was 11.5 ± 6.7 years with extremes of 1 year and 25 years. They practiced military music for an average of 4.58 hours per day for 4 days per week. The mean sonometric measurement during training ranged from 89.1 dB (A) to 116.4 dB (A). Hearing loss was predominant in the military musicians group and was mild degree bilaterally (p = 0.002) and perceptual type (p = 0.007). <strong>Conclusion:</strong> Military musicians are exposed to high noise levels, putting them at risk of developing hearing problems that may limit their performance. The main otological morbidity found was hearing loss associated with a few cases of tinnitus and headache.展开更多

It comes as a big surprise, even thoughthe winner has been nominated repeatedly. The main reason for the surprise is becauseof Dylan's identity as a popular artist, since the Nobel Prize in Literature has longbeen closely associated with the so-called mainstream serious literature. As a matterof fact, Bob Dylan deserves the prize in every way in terms of his contribution to thecontemporary culture, his great achievement and powerful influence. Regarding thisphenomenon, this paper illustrates the positive significance of Dylan’s award fromseveral aspects, including the origin and original features of poetry, the historicalchanges of literary concept, the close relationship between literature and art, thevitality of popular culture, etc. A discussion is also given to the world’s reflectionon literature, or the attributes, function and mode of transmission of literature in theacademic field triggered by Dylan’s award.展开更多

Previous literature mentioned about the importance of contra-lateral suppression of OAEs as a tool to assess efferent system in different groups of popula-tion. There is dearth of literature to explore the efferent system function in experienced musicians exposed to rock music using TEOAEs and DPOAEs. Methods:Two groups of participant (14 rock musicians and 14 non-musicians) in the age range of 18e25 years were involved in the study. Contralateral suppression of TEOAEs and DPOAEs were measured using ILO (Version 6) in both groups. Results: Descriptive statistics showed higher suppression of TEOAEs and DPOAEs in rock-musicians at most of the frequencies in comparison to non-musicians. For DPOAE measures, Mann Whitney U test results revealed significantly greater DPOAE suppression only at 1 kHz and 3 kHz in rock-musicians compared to non-musicians. For within group comparison, Kruskal Wallis test results revealed there were significant difference observed across most of the fre-quencies i.e. at 1 kHz, 3 kHz and 6 kHz. For TEOAE measures, Mann Whitney U test results re-vealed that only at 2 kHz, TEOAE suppression in rock-musician was significantly greater compared to non-musicians. Similarly, Kuskal Wallis test results revealed that within group there were no significant differences observed for most of the frequencies except 2 kHz. Conclusions:Based on the above finding, present study concludes that rock musicians are hav-ing better efferent system compared to non-musicians. No suppression effect at few fre-quencies probably indicates more vulnerability at those frequencies. Contralateral suppression of DPOAE shows more significant finding in comparison to contralateral suppression of TEOAEs in present study.展开更多

文摘Background:Post-mortem and magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)studies of the central sulcus,as an indicator of motor cortex, have shown that in the general population there is greater representation of the dominant compared to the non-dominant hand.Studies of musicians, who are highly skilled in performing complex finger movements, have suggested this dominance is affected by musical training, but methods and findings have been mixed. Objective:In the present study,an automated image analysis pipeline using a 3D mesh approach was applied to measure central sulcus(CS)asymmetry on MR images obtained for a cohort of right-handed pianists and matched controls. Methods:The depth, length, and surface area(SA)of the CS and thickness of the cortical mantle adjacent to the CS were measured in each cerebral hemisphere by applying the BrainVISA Morphologist 2012 software pipeline to 3D T1-weighted MR images of the brain obtained for 15 right-handed pianists and 14 controls, matched with respect to age, sex, and handedness.Asymmetry indices(AIs)were calculated for each parameter and multivariate analysis of covariance(MANCOVA),and post hoc tests were performed to compare differences between the pianist and control groups. Results:A one-way MANCOVA across the four AIs,controlling for age and sex, revealed a significant main effect of group(P=0.04),and post hoc analysis revealed that while SA was significantly greater in the left than the right cerebral hemisphere in controls(P<0.001),there was no significant difference between left and right SA in the pianists(P=0.634).Independent samples t-tests revealed that the SA of right CS was significantly larger in pianists compared to controls(P=0.015),with no between-group differences in left CS.Conclusions:Application of an image analysis pipeline to 3D MR images has provided robust evidence of sig-nificantly increased representation of the non-dominant hand in the brain of pianists compared to age-,sex-,and handedness-matched controls. This finding supports prior research showing structural differences in the central sulcus in musicians and is interpreted to reflect the long-term motor training and high skill level of right-handed pianists in using their left hand.
