Increasing demand for water from all sectors presents a challenge for policy makers to improve water allocation policies for storage reservoirs. In addition, there are many other organisms and species present in river...Increasing demand for water from all sectors presents a challenge for policy makers to improve water allocation policies for storage reservoirs. In addition, there are many other organisms and species present in river waters that also require water for their survival. Due to the lack of awareness many times the minimum required quantity and quality of water for river ecosystem is not made available at downstream of storage reservoirs. So, a sustainable approach is required in reservoir operations to maintain the river ecosystem with environmental flow while meeting the other demands. Multi-objective, multi-reservoir operation model developed with Python programming using Fuzzy Linear Programing method incorporating environmental flow requirement of river is presented in this paper. Objective of maximization of irrigation release is considered for first run. In second run maximization of releases for hydropower generation is considered as objective. Further both objectives are fuzzified by incorporating linear membership function and solved to maximize fuzzified objective function simultaneously by maximizing satisfaction level indicator (λ). The optimal reservoir operation policy is presented considering constraints including Irrigation release, Turbine release, Reservoir storage, Environmental flow release and hydrologic continuity. Model applied for multi-reservoir system consists of four reservoirs, i.e., Jayakwadi Stage-I Reservoir (R1), Jayakwadi Stage-II Reservoir (R2), Yeldari Reservoir (R3), Siddheshwar Reservoir (R4) in Godavari River sub-basin from Marathwada region of Maharashtra State, India.展开更多

Thus, proper planning and use of reservoir water are essential for all. To tackle this issue different optimization techniques underline their need and importance in the reservoir operations. In the present study, multi-reservoir optimization model is developed using Python programing language considering the objective of maximization of total annual release for hydropower generation. Model is applied to 3 reservoirs from Godavari River basin from Maharashtra state India. Water essential for conservation of environment has also been made available in river as environmental flow as per the recommendations of Central Water Commission (CWC) India. Based on two environmental health decision suppo...The complexity we take into account when dealing with complex issues and the way we deal with that complexity is not given or self-evident, it is framed and negotiated. Based on two environmental health decision support case studies we address a set of key methodological choices, crucial in shaping the multi-criteria decision support and illuminate how they followed from transdisciplinary collaboration and negotiation: diversity tolerance, dealing with uncertainty and difference of opinion, weight of information and the epistemological divide between traditional closed and alternative open paradigms. The case studies exemplify the growing conviction amongst methodologists that, especially regarding complex issues, best methods do not exist as such: methods are chosen and tailored in practice and the quality to a large extent is dependent on the process in which methodological development is embedded. We hope to contribute to making explicit the importance of methodological decision making regarding environmental health complexity.展开更多
A reference point based multi-objective optimization using a combination between trust region (TR) algorithm and particle swarm optimization (PSO) to solve the multi-objective environmental/economic dispatch (EED) pro...A reference point based multi-objective optimization using a combination between trust region (TR) algorithm and particle swarm optimization (PSO) to solve the multi-objective environmental/economic dispatch (EED) problem is presented in this paper. The EED problem is handled by Reference Point Interactive Approach. One of the main advantages of the proposed approach is integrating the merits of both TR and PSO, where TR has provided the initial set (close to the Pareto set as possible and the reference point of the decision maker) followed by PSO to improve the quality of the solutions and get all the points on the Pareto frontier. The performance of the proposed algorithm is tested on standard IEEE 30-bus 6-genrator test system and is compared with conventional methods. The results demonstrate the capabilities of the proposed approach to generate true and well-distributed Pareto-optimal non-dominated solutions in one single run. The comparison with the classical methods demonstrates the superiority of the proposed approach and confirms its potential to solve the multi-objective EED problem.展开更多

The crop is important for human and animal consumption. Despite its importance, the crop is affected by biotic and abiotic constraints. Among those constraints, striga has a high impact on yield. In fact, to survive, farmers are growing their local preferred sorghum varieties wish is highly sensible to the weed. Striga management is a challenge that requires a permanent solution. In addition, the development of high-yielding Striga resistant genotypes will be appreciated by farmers. The development of striga resistance will be based on the breeding population performances under farmer’s diverse environmental conditions adaptation. The main objective of this study is to evaluate two breeding populations for striga resistance in two different environments at Boulke and Dibissou in Tahoua region, to identify the early and high-yielding striga tolerant genotypes under natural infestation.展开更多

It is relevant to breeding organizations as well as to g...In the process to the marketing of cultivars, identification of superior test locations within multi-environment variety trial schemes is of critical relevance. It is relevant to breeding organizations as well as to governmental organizations in charge of cultivar registration. Where competition among breeding companies exists, effective and fair multi-environment variety trials are of utmost importance to motivate investment in breeding. The objective of this study was to use genotype main effect plus genotype by environment interaction(GGE) biplot analysis to evaluate test locations in terms of discrimination ability, representativeness and desirability, and to investigate the presence of multiple mega-environments in cotton production in the Yangtze River Valley(YaRV), China. Four traits(cotton lint yield, fiber length, lint breaking tenacity, micronaire) and two composite selection indices were considered. It was found that the assumption of a single mega-environment in the YaRV for cotton production does not hold. The YaRV consists of three cotton mega-environments: a main one represented by 11 locations and two minor ones represented by two test locations each. This demands that the strategy of cotton variety registration or recommendation must be adjusted. GGE biplot analysis has also led to the identification of test location superior for cotton variety evaluation. Although test location desirable for selecting different traits varied greatly, Jinzhou, Hubei Province, China, was found to be desirable for selecting for all traits considered while Jianyang, Sichuan Province, China, was found to be desirable for none.展开更多
