In this paper,a new study concerning the usage of artificial neural networks in the control application is given. It is shown, that the data gathered during proper operation of a given control plant can be used in the learning process to fully embrace the control pattern.Interestingly, the instances driven by neural networks have the ability to outperform the original analytically driven scenarios.Three different control schemes, namely perfect,linear-quadratic,and generalized predictive controllers were used in the theoretical study. In addition, the nonlinear recurrent neural network-based generalized predictive controller with the radial basis function-originated predictor was obtained to exemplify the main results of the paper regarding the real-world application. 展开更多

In early 2018,the Boliden Garpenberg operation implemented an optimized control strategy as an addition to the existing ventilation on demand system. The purpose of the strategy is to further minimize energy use for main and booster fans, whilst also fulfilling airflow setpoints without violating constraints such as min/max differential pressure over fans and interaction of air between areas in mines.Using air flow measurements and a dynamical model of the ventilation system,a mine-wide coordination control of fans can be carried out.The numerical model is data driven and derived from historical operational data or step changes experiments. This makes both initial deployment and lifetime model maintenance,as the mine evolves,a comparably easy operation. The control has been proven to operate in a stable manner over long periods without having to re-calibrate the model. Results prove a 40%decrease in energy use for the fans involved and a greater controllability of air flow. Moreover,a 15%decrease of the total air flow into the mine will give additional proportional heating savings during winter periods. All in all,the multivariable controller shows a correlation between production in the mine and the ventilation system performance superior to all of its predecessors. 展开更多

Electronic throttle control (ETC) system has worked its way to becoming a standard subsystem in most of the current automobiles as it has contributed much to the improvement of fuel economy, emissions, drivability and safety. Precision control of the subsystem, which consists of a dc motor driving a throttle plate, a pre-loaded return spring and a set of gear train to regulate airflow into the engine, seems rather straightforward and yet complex. The difficulties lie in the unknown system parameters, hard nonlinearity of the pre-loaded spring that pulls the throttle plate to its default position, and friction, among others. In this paper, we extend our previous results obtained for the modeling, unknown system parameters identification and control of a commercially available Bosch’s DV-E5 ETC system. Details of modeling and parameters identification based on laboratory experiments, data analysis, and knowledge of the system are provided. The parameters identification results were verified and validated by a real-time PID control implemented with an xPC Target. A nonlinear control design was then proposed utilizing the input-output feedback linearization approach and technique. In view of a recent massive auto recalls due to the controversial uncontrollable engine accelerations, the results of this paper may inspire further research interest on the drive-by-wire technology. 展开更多

The attenuation of spatially evolving instability Tollmien-Schlichting(T-S)waves in the boundary layer of a flat plate with zero pressure gradients using an active feedback control scheme is theoretically and numerically investigated. The boundary layer is excited artificially by various perturbations to create a three-dimensional field of instability waves.Arrays of actuators and sensors are distributed locally at the wall surface and connected together via a feedback controller. The key elements of this feedback control are the determination of the dynamic model of the flat plate boundary layer between the actuators and the sensors, and the design of the model-based feedback controller. The dynamic model is established based on the linear stability calculation which simulates the three-dimensional input-output behaviour of the boundary layer. To simplify the control problem,an uncoupled control mode of the dynamic model is made to capture only those dynamics that have greatest influences on the input-output behaviour.A Proportional-Integral-Derivative(PID)controller,i.e.a lead-lag compensator, combining with a standard Smith predictor is designed based on the system stability criterion and the specifications using frequency-response methods.Good performance of the feedback control with the uncoupled control mode is demonstrated by the large reduction of the three-dimensional disturbances in the boundary layer. This simple feedback control is realistic and competitive in a practical implementation of T-S wave cancellation using a limited number of localised sensors and actuators. 展开更多

Model-based control shows promising potential for engine performance improve-ment and future aero-propulsion requirements. In this paper,an auto-updating thrust variation mitigation(AuTVM)control approach using on-board model strategies is proposed for gas tur-bine aero-engines under in-service degradation effects, which aims at active thrust regulation and acceleration protection in a simultaneous way.The AuTVM control is integrated with an on-line block, based on a reliable on-board engine model, and an off-line part for the periodical update of control parameters via post-flight engine monitoring data. The core feature of the AuTVM control is a set of auto-updating loops within the on-line part, including thrust regu-lation loop, surge margin loop, turbine entry temperature loop, and the steady loop, whose con-trol parameters are periodically adjusted with increasingflight cycles.Meanwhile,an industrial sensor-based baseline controller and two tailored model-based controllers,i.e.,a thrust variation mitigation(TVM)controller withfixed gains and a self-enhancing active transient protection(SeATP)controller with pro-active transient protection and passive thrust control, are also developed as comparison bases.Numerical simulations for idle to full-power acceleration tests are carried on a validated aero-thermal turbofan engine model using publicly available degra-dation data.Simulation results demonstrate that both new engines and severely degraded en-gines regulated by the AuTVM controller show significant thrust response enhancement, compared to the baseline controller. Moreover, thrust variation at the maximum steady state of degraded engines, which exists within the SeATP controller and the baseline controller,is suppressed by the proposed AuTVM controller.Robustness analysis against degradation uncer-tainties and sensor accuracy confirms that the AuTVM controller owns a closer maximum steady-state thrust distribution to the desired value than those of the SeATP and the baseline controller while utilizing transient margins of controlled engines more effectively.Hence, the control performance of the AuTVM controller for in-service engines is guaranteed. 展开更多

To address the two critical issues of evaluating the necessity of implementing cooling techniques and achieving real-time temperature control of drilling fluids underground in the current drilling fluid cooling technology,we first established a temperature and pressure coupled downhole heat transfer model, which can be used in both water-based and oil-based drilling fluid. Then, fourteen factors, which could affect wellbore temperature, were analyzed.Based on the standard deviation of the downhole temperature corresponding to each influencing factor, the influence of each factor was quantified. The influencing factors that can be used to guide the drilling fluid's cooling technology were drilling fluid thermal conductivity, drilling fluid heat capacity, drilling fluid density, drill strings rotation speed, pump rate, viscosity,ROP,and injection temperature. The nondominated sorting genetic algorithm was used to optimize these six parameters, but the optimization process took 182 min.Combining these eight parameters'influence rules with the nondominated sorting genetic algorithm can reduce the optimization time to 108 s.Theoretically, the downhole temperature has been demonstrated to increase with the inlet temperature increasing linearly under quasi-steady states.Combining this law and PID,the downhole temperature can be controlled, which can reduce the energy for cooling the surface drilling fluid and can ensure the downhole temperature reaches the set value as soon as possible. 展开更多

This paper proposes an adaptive neural network sliding mode control based on fractional-order ultra-local model for n-DOF upper-limb exoskeleton in presence of uncertainties, external disturbances and input deadzone.Considering the model complexity and input deadzone,a fractional-order ultra-local model is proposed to formulate the original dynamic system for simple controller design.Firstly, the control gain of ultra-local model is considered as a constant. The fractional-order sliding mode technique is designed to stabilize the closed-loop system, while fractional-order time-delay estimation is combined with neural network to estimate the lumped disturbance.Correspondingly,a fractional-order ultra-local model-based neural network sliding mode controller(FO-NNSMC) is proposed.Secondly,to avoid disadvantageous effect of improper gain selection on the control performance, the control gain of ultra-local model is considered as an unknown parameter. Then, the Nussbaum technique is introduced into the FO-NNSMC to deal with the stability problem with unknown gain.Correspondingly,a fractional-order ultra-local model-based adaptive neural network sliding mode controller(FO-ANNSMC) is proposed. Moreover, the stability analysis of the closed-loop system with the proposed method is presented by using the Lyapunov theory. Finally, with the co-simulations on virtual prototype of 7-DOF iReHave upper-limb exoskeleton and experiments on 2-DOF upper-limb exoskeleton, the obtained compared results illustrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method. 展开更多

Numerous clustering algorithms are valuable in pattern recognition in forest vegetation, with new ones continually being proposed. While some are well-known,others are underutilized in vegetation science. This study compares the performance of practical iterative reallocation algorithms with model-based clustering algorithms. The data is from forest vegetation in Virginia(United States),the Hyrcanian Forest(Asia),and European beech forests.Practical iterative reallocation algorithms were applied as non-hierarchical methods and Finite Gaussian mixture modeling was used as a model-based clustering method.Due to limitations on dimensionality in model-based clustering, principal coordinates analysis was employed to reduce the dataset’s dimensions.A log transformation was applied to achieve a normal distribution for the pseudo-species data before calculating the Bray-Curtis dissimilarity. The findings indicate that the reallocation of misclassified objects based on silhouette width(OPTSIL)with Flexible-β(-0.25)had the highest mean among the tested clustering algorithms with Silhouette width 1(REMOS1)with Flexible-β(-0.25)second.However,model-based clustering performed poorly.Based on these results,it is recommended using OPTSIL with Flexible-β(-0.25)and REMOS1 with Flexible-β(-0.25)for forest vegetation classification instead of model-based clustering particularly for heterogeneous datasets common in forest vegetation community data. 展开更多

Unlike traditional propeller-driven underwater vehicles,blended-wing-body underwater gliders(BWBUGs)achieve zigzag gliding through periodic adjustments of their net buoyancy, enhancing their cruising capabilities while mini-mizing energy consumption. However, enhancing gliding performance is challenging due to the complex system design and limited design experience. To address this challenge, this paper introduces a model-based,multidisciplinary system design optimization method for BWBUGs at the conceptual design stage.First,a model-based,multidisciplinary co-simulation design framework is established to evaluate both system-level and disciplinary indices of BWBUG performance.A data-driven,many-objective multidisciplinary optimization is subsequently employed to explore the design space, yielding 32 Pareto optimal solutions. Finally,a model-based physical system simulation, which represents the design with the largest hyper-volume contribution among the 32 final designs,is established. Its gliding perfor-mance,validated by component behavior, lays the groundwork for constructing the entire system’s digital prototype. In conclusion, this model-based,multidisciplinary design optimization method effectively generates design schemes for innovative underwater vehicles, facilitating the development of digital prototypes. 展开更多

Dynamic control is essential to guarantee the stable performance of continuous chromatography.AutoMAb dynamic control strategy has been developed to ensure a consistent protein load in twincolumn CaptureSMB continuous capture by integrating the UV signal of breakthrough. In this study, the process risk of CaptureSMB continuous capture under AutoMAb control towards the feedstock variations was assessed by a mechanistic model developed by us.The effects of target protein and impurities under the variation range of±10 mAU·min^(-1) on load amount, protein loss, process productivity, and resin capacity utilization were investigated. The results showed that the CaptureSMB process could be successfully controlled by AutoMAb towards increased or slightly decreased concentration of feedstock. However, the load process would be out of control with drastically decreased target protein or impurities, and the decreased impurities would lead to protein loss.It was found that AutoMAb control would cause 44.7%non-operational areas and 18.3%protein loss areas in the variation range of±10 mAU·min^(-1).To improve the stability of the CaptureSMB process,a modified AutoMAb control that would stop the load procedure when the absolute value of the integral area reached the preset value, was proposed to reduce the risk of protein loss and the non-operational area. 展开更多

Increasing attention has been paid to the efficiency improvement of the induction traction system of high-speed trains due to the high demand for energy saving. In emergency self-propelled mode, however, the dc-link voltage and the traction power of the motor are significantly reduced, resulting in decreased traction efficiency due to the low load and low speed operations. Aiming to tackle this problem, a novel efficiency improved control method is introduced to the emergency mode of high-speed train traction system in this paper. In the proposed method, a total loss model of induction motor considering the behaviors of both iron and copper loss is established. An improved iterative algorithm with decreased computational burden is then introduced, resulting in a fast solving of the optimal flux reference for loss minimization at each control period. In addition, considering the parameter variation problem due to the low load and low speed operations, a parameter estimation method is integrated to improve the controller's robustness. The effectiveness of the proposed method on efficiency improvement at low voltage and low load conditions is demonstrated by simulated and experimental results. 展开更多

Remote sensing(RS)facilitates forest inventory across a wide range of variables required by the UNFCCC as well as by other agreements and processes. The Conventional model-based(CMB)estimator supports wall-to-wall RS data, while Hybrid estimators support surveys where RS data are available as a sample. However, the connection between these two types of monitoring procedures has been unclear, hindering the reconciliation of wall-to-wall and non-wall-to-wall use of RS data in practical applications and thus potentially impeding cost-efficient deployment of high-end sensing instruments for large area monitoring.Consequently, our objectives are to(1)shed further light on the connections between different types of Hybrid estimators, and between CMB and Hybrid estimators, through mathematical analyses and Monte Carlo simulations;and(2)compare the effects and explore the tradeoffs related to the RS sampling design, coverage rate, and cluster size on estimation precision.Primary findings are threefold:(1)the CMB estimator represents a special case of Hybrid estimators, signifying that wallto-wall RS data is a particular instance of sample-based RS data;(2)the precision of estimators in forest inventory can be greater for stratified non-wall-to-wall RS data compared to wall-to-wall RS data;(3)otherwise costprohibitive sensing, such as LiDAR and UAV,can support large scale monitoring through collecting RS data as a sample. These conclusions may reconcile different perspectives regarding choice of RS instruments, data acquisition, and cost for continuous observations, particularly in the context of surveys aiming at providing data for mitigating climate change. 展开更多

In this paper, the control of a two-time-scale plant, where the sensor is connected to a linear controller/ actuator via a network is addressed. The slow and fast systems of singularly perturbed systems are used to produce an estimate of the plant state behavior between transmission times, by which one can reduce the usage of the network. The approximate solutions of the whole systems are derived and it is shown that the whole systems via the network control are generally asymptotically stable as long as their slow and fast systems are both stable. Friction compensation is particularly important for motion trajectory tracking control of pneumatic cylinders at low speed movement. However, most of the existing model-based friction compensation schemes use simple classical models, which are not enough to address applications with high-accuracy position requirements. Furthermore, the friction force in the cylinder is time-varying, and there exist rather severe unmodelled dynamics and unknown disturbances in the pneumatic system. To deal with these problems effectively, an adaptive robust controller with LuGre model-based dynamic friction compensation is constructed. The proposed controller employs on-line recursive least squares estimation(RLSE) to reduce the extent of parametric uncertainties, and utilizes the sliding mode control method to attenuate the effects of parameter estimation errors, unmodelled dynamics and disturbances. In addition, in order to realize LuGre model-based friction compensation, the modified dual-observer structure for estimating immeasurable friction internal state is developed. Therefore, a prescribed motion tracking transient performance and final tracking accuracy can be guaranteed. Since the system model uncertainties are unmatched, the recursive backstepping design technology is applied. In order to solve the conflicts between the sliding mode control design and the adaptive control design, the projection mapping is used to condition the RLSE algorithm so that the parameter estimates are kept within a known bounded convex set. Finally, the proposed controller is tested for tracking sinusoidal trajectories and smooth square trajectory under different loads and sudden disturbance. The testing results demonstrate that the achievable performance of the proposed controller is excellent and is much better than most other studies in literature. Especially when a 0.5 Hz sinusoidal trajectory is tracked, the maximum tracking error is 0.96 mm and the average tracking error is 0.45 mm. This paper constructs an adaptive robust controller which can compensate the friction force in the cylinder. 展开更多

The present research work attempted to delineate and characterize the reservoir facies from the Dawson Canyon Formation in the Penobscot field,Scotian Basin. An integrated study of instantaneous frequency,P-impedance,volume of clay and neutron-porosity attributes, and structural framework was done to unravel the Late Cretaceous depositional system and reservoir facies distribution patterns within the study area.Fault strikes were found in the EW and NEE-SWW directions indicating the dominant course of tectonic activities during the Late Cretaceous period in the region.P-impedance was estimated using model-based seismic inversion.Petrophysical properties such as the neutron porosity(NPHI)and volume of clay(VCL)were estimated using the multilayer perceptron neural network with high accuracy.Comparatively,a combination of low instantaneous frequency(15-30 Hz),moderate to high impedance(7000-9500 gm/cc*m/s),low neutron porosity(27%-40%)and low volume of clay(40%-60%),suggests fair-to-good sandstone development in the Dawson Canyon Formation. After calibration with the welllog data,it is found that further lowering in these attribute responses signifies the clean sandstone facies possibly containing hydrocarbons. The present study suggests that the shale lithofacies dominates the Late Cretaceous deposition(Dawson Canyon Formation)in the Penobscot field,Scotian Basin.Major faults and overlying shale facies provide structural and stratigraphic seals and act as a suitable hydrocarbon entrapment mechanism in the Dawson Canyon Formation's reservoirs. The present research advocates the integrated analysis of multi-attributes estimated using different methods to minimize the risk involved in hydrocarbon exploration. 展开更多
