Performance of the Adaptive Coding and Modulation(ACM) strongly depends on the retrieved Channel State Information(CSI),which can be obtained using the channel estimation techniques relying on pilot symbol transmission.Earlier analysis of methods of pilot-aided channel estimation for ACM systems were relatively little.In this paper,we investigate the performance of CSI prediction using the Minimum Mean Square Error(MMSE)channel estimator for an ACM system.To solve the two problems of MMSE:high computational operations and oversimplified assumption,we then propose the Low-Complexity schemes(LC-MMSE and Recursion LC-MMSE(R-LC-MMSE)).Computational complexity and Mean Square Error(MSE) are presented to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.Both analysis and numerical results show that LC-MMSE performs close to the wellknown MMSE estimator with much lower complexity and R-LC-MMSE improves the application of MMSE estimation to specific circumstances. 展开更多

We propose a cavity length demodulation method that combines virtual reference interferometry(VRI) and minimum mean square error(MMSE) algorithm for fiber-optic Fabry–Perot(F-P) sensors. In contrast to the conventional demodulating method that uses fast Fourier transform(FFT) for cavity length estimation,our method employs the VRI technique to obtain a raw cavity length, which is further refined by the MMSE algorithm. As an experimental demonstration, a fiber-optic F-P sensor based on a sapphire wafer is fabricated for temperature sensing. The VRI-MMSE method is employed to interrogate cavity lengths of the sensor under different temperatures ranging from 28°C to 1000°C. It eliminates the "mode jumping" problem in the FFT-MMSE method and obtains a precision of 4.8 nm, corresponding to a temperature resolution of 2.0°C over a range of 1000°C. The experimental results reveal that the proposed method provides a promising, high precision alternative for demodulating fiber-optic F-P sensors. 展开更多

LOW COMPLEXITY LMMSE TURBO EQUALIZATION FOR COMBINED ERROR CONTROL CODED AND LINEARLY PRECODED OFDM

The turbo equalization approach is studied for Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system with combined error control coding and linear precoding. While previous literatures employed linear precodcr of small size for complexity reasons, this paper proposes to use a linear precoder of size larger than or equal to the maximum length of the equivalent discrete-time channel in order to achieve full frequency diversity and reduce complexities of the error control coder/decoder. Also a low complexity Linear Minimum Mean Square Error (LMMSE) turbo equalizer is derived for the receiver. Through simulation and performance analysis, it is shown that the performance of the proposed scheme over frequency selective fading channel reaches the matched filter bound; compared with the same coded OFDM without linear precoding, the proposed scheme shows an Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) improvement of at least 6dB at a bit error rate of 10 6 over a multipath channel with exponential power delay profile. Convergence behavior of the proposed scheme with turbo equalization using various type of linear precoder/transformer, various interleaver size and error control coder of various constraint length is also investigated. 展开更多

Large number of antennas and higher bandwidth usage in massive multiple-input-multipleoutput(MIMO)systems create immense burden on receiver in terms of higher power consumption.The power consumption at the receiver radio frequency(RF)circuits can be significantly reduced by the application of analog-to-digital converter(ADC)of low resolution.In this paper we investigate bandwidth efficiency(BE)of massive MIMO with perfect channel state information(CSI)by applying low resolution ADCs with Rician fadings.We start our analysis by deriving the additive quantization noise model,which helps to understand the effects of ADC resolution on BE by keeping the power constraint at the receiver in radar.We also investigate deeply the effects of using higher bit rates and the number of BS antennas on bandwidth efficiency(BE)of the system.We emphasize that good bandwidth efficiency can be achieved by even using low resolution ADC by using regularized zero-forcing(RZF)combining algorithm.We also provide a generic analysis of energy efficiency(EE)with different options of bits by calculating the energy efficiencies(EE)using the achievable rates.We emphasize that satisfactory BE can be achieved by even using low-resolution ADC/DAC in massive MIMO. 展开更多

Linear minimum mean square error(MMSE)detection has been shown to achieve near-optimal performance for massive multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO)systems but inevitably involves complicated matrix inversion,which entails high complexity.To avoid the exact matrix inversion,a considerable number of implicit and explicit approximate matrix inversion based detection methods is proposed.By combining the advantages of both the explicit and the implicit matrix inversion,this paper introduces a new low-complexity signal detection algorithm.Firstly,the relationship between implicit and explicit techniques is analyzed.Then,an enhanced Newton iteration method is introduced to realize an approximate MMSE detection for massive MIMO uplink systems.The proposed improved Newton iteration significantly reduces the complexity of conventional Newton iteration.However,its complexity is still high for higher iterations.Thus,it is applied only for first two iterations.For subsequent iterations,we propose a novel trace iterative method(TIM)based low-complexity algorithm,which has significantly lower complexity than higher Newton iterations.Convergence guarantees of the proposed detector are also provided.Numerical simulations verify that the proposed detector exhibits significant performance enhancement over recently reported iterative detectors and achieves close-to-MMSE performance while retaining the low-complexity advantage for systems with hundreds of antennas. 展开更多

In the scenario of multiple wireless personal area networks (WPANs) accessing the home area network (HAN), the frequency-shift (FRESH)filter based on the cyclostationary theory is applied for the anti-interference at the 2. 4 GHz spectrum. The main architecture of multiple WPANs accessing the HAN is proposed. The medium access control( MAC) -level coordination solution applied in the access point (AP)for the coexistence of different communication protocols within WPAN is discussed. The diagram of the adaptive FRESH filter is described. The anti-interference models of the FRESH filter in the scenario of multiple WPANs accessing the HAN are proposed. The minimum mean square error (MMSE)convergence property of the FRESH filter with the change in the data point number is analyzed. The simulation results indicate that the FRESH filter can effectively extract the signal of interest (SOI) from the interference with the partly overlapped spectrum. Thus, the excellent anti-interference performance of the FRESH filter is validated. Moreover, by both theoretical analysis and simulation, the MMSE convergent property of the FRESH filter is also proven. 展开更多

A fractional sample equalizer is also derived to further improve the performance of the receiver. Performance analysis and the calculation of the output signal to interference ratio (SINR) at each receiver antenna are presented to help direct the design of equalization weight in a more optimal manner. System simulations demonstrate the significant performance gain over conventional Rake receiver and high potential of MIMO HSDPA for high-data-rate packet transmission. 展开更多

Aiming at the optimum path excluding characteristics and the full constellation searching characteristics of the K-best detection algorithm, an improved-performance K-best detection algorithm and several reduced-complexity K-best detection algorithms are proposed. The improved-performance K-best detection algorithm deploys minimum mean square error (MMSE) filtering of a channel matrix before QR decomposition. This algorithm can decrease the probability of excluding the optimum path and achieve better performance. The reducedcomplexity K-best detection algorithms utilize a sphere decoding method to reduce searching constellation points. Simulation results show that the improved performance K-best detection algorithm obtains a 1 dB performance gain compared to the K- best detection algorithm based on sorted QR decomposition (SQRD). Performance loss occurs when K = 4 in reduced complexity K-best detection algorithms. When K = 8, the reduced complexity K-best detection algorithms require less computational effort compared with traditional K-best detection algorithms and achieve the same performance. 展开更多

However, the excessively high computational complexity of the signal detection in massive MIMO systems imposes a significant challenge for practical hardware implementations. In this paper, we propose a novel minimum mean square error(MMSE) signal detection using the accelerated overrelaxation(AOR) iterative method without complicated matrix inversion, which is capable of reducing the overall complexity of the classical MMSE algorithm by an order of magnitude. Simulation results show that the proposed AOR-based method can approach the conventional MMSE signal detection with significant complexity reduction. 展开更多

A concurrent constant modulus algorithm and soft decision-directed scheme is then applied to adapt the beamformer. Rate splitting multiple access(RSMA)has shown great potentials for the next generation communication systems.In this work,we consider a two-user system in hybrid satellite terrestrial network(HSTN)where one of them is heavily shadowed and the other uses cooperative RSMA to improve the transmission quality.The non-convex weighted sum rate(WSR)problem formulated based on this model is usually optimized by computational burdened weighted minimum mean square error(WMMSE)algorithm.We propose to apply deep unfolding to solve the optimization problem,which maps WMMSE iterations into a layer-wise network and could achieve better performance within limited iterations.We also incorporate momentum accelerated projection gradient descent(PGD)algorithm to circumvent the complicated operations in WMMSE that are not amenable for unfolding and mapping.The momentum and step size in deep unfolding network are selected as trainable parameters for training.As shown in the simulation results,deep unfolding scheme has WSR and convergence speed advantages over original WMMSE algorithm. 展开更多

In multi-user multiple input multiple output (MU-MIMO) systems, the outdated channel state information at the transmit- ter caused by channel time variation has been shown to greatly reduce the achievable ergodic sum capacity. A simple yet effec- tive solution to this problem is presented by designing a channel extrapolator relying on Karhunen-Loeve (KL) expansion of time- varying channels. In this scheme, channel estimation is done at the base station (BS) rather than at the user terminal (UT), which thereby dispenses the channel parameters feedback from the UT to the BS. Moreover, the inherent channel correlation and the parsimonious parameterization properties of the KL expan- sion are respectively exploited to reduce the channel mismatch error and the computational complexity. Simulations show that the presented scheme outperforms conventional schemes in terms of both channel estimation mean square error (MSE) and ergodic capacity. 展开更多

A new channel estimation and data detection joint algorithm is proposed for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) - orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system using linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE)- based space-alternating generalized expectation-maximization (SAGE) algorithm. In the proposed algorithm, every sub-frame of the MIMO-OFDM system is divided into some OFDM sub-blocks and the LMMSE-based SAGE algorithm in each sub-block is used. At the head of each sub-flame, we insert training symbols which are used in the initial estimation at the beginning. Channel estimation of the previous sub-block is applied to the initial estimation in the current sub-block by the maximum-likelihood (ML) detection to update channel estimatjon and data detection by iteration until converge. Then all the sub-blocks can be finished in turn. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can improve the bit error rate (BER) performance. 展开更多

An optimal minimum mean square error successive interference cancellation (OMMSE SIC) scheme for Groupwise space-time block coding (G-STBC) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems is presented. In such a system, transmit antennas are partitioned into several STBC encoding groups and each group transmits independent data stream which is individually STBC encoded. On the receiver side, by exploring the temporal constraint provided by STBC, an equivalent channel model similar to the one in standard vertical Bell laboratories layered space-time (V-BLAST) systems is generated. Then OMMSE SIC algorithm is performed to detect all the transmitted information. Simulation compares the proposed scheme with non-ordering MMSE SIC scheme and the corresponding equal data rate scheme in V-BLAST systems with the same receive antennas' number. Result shows that the proposed scheme has better performance than non-ordering MMSE SIC scheme and by introducing more transmit antennas and adopting the OMMSE SIC scheme, better performance also can be achieved than corresponding V-BLAST systems. 展开更多

A simplified minimum mean square error(MMSE) detector is proposed for joint detection and decoding of multi-ple-input multiple-output(MIMO) systems.The matrix inversion lemma and the singular value decomposition(SVD) of the channel matrix are used to simplify the computation of the coefficient of the MMSE filter.Compared to the original MMSE detector,the proposed detector has a much lower computational complexity with only a marginal performance loss.The proposed detector can also be applied to MIMO systems with high order modulations. 展开更多
