Background Cotton crop is infested by numerous arthropod pests from sowing to harvesting, causing substantial direct and indirect yield losses.Knowledge of seasonal population trends and the relative occurrence of pests and their natural enemies is required to minimize the pest population and yield losses. In the current study, analysis of the seasonal population trend of pests and natural enemies and their relative occurrence on cultivars of three cotton species in Central India has been carried out. Results A higher number and diversity of sucking pests were observed during the vegetative cotton growth stage(60 days after sowing),declining as the crop matured. With the exception of cotton jassid(Amrasca biguttula biguttula Ishida),which caused significant crop damage mainly from August to September;populations of other sucking insects seldom reached economic threshold levels(ETL)throughout the studied period. The bollworm complex populations were minimal, except for the pink bollworm(Pectinophora gossypiella Saunders),which re-emerged as a menace to cotton crops during the cotton cropping season 2017–2018 due to resistance development against Bt-cotton.A reasonably good number of predatory arthropods, including coccinellids, lacewings, and spiders, were found actively preying on the arthropod pest complex of the cotton crop during the early vegetative growth stage.Linear regression indicates a significant relationship between green boll infestations and pink bollworm moths in pheromone traps.Multiple linear regression analyse showed mean weekly weather at one-or two-week lag periods had a significant impact on sucking pest population(cotton aphid, cotton jassid, cotton whitefly, and onion thrips)fluctuation.Gossypium hirsutum cultivars RCH 2 and DCH 32,and G.barbadense cultivar Suvin were found susceptible to cotton jassid and onion thrips.Phule Dhanvantary,an G.arboreum cotton cultivar, demonstrated the highest tolerance among all evaluated cultivars against all sucking pests. Conclusion These findings have important implications for pest management in cotton crops.Susceptible cultivars warrant more attention for plant protection measures, making them more input-intensive.The choice of appropriate cultivars can help minimize input costs, thereby increasing net returns for cotton farmers. 展开更多

Bangladesh has a denser population in comparison with many other countries. Though the rate of population increase has been regarded as a concerning issue, estimation of the population instability in the upcoming years may be useful for national planning. To predict Bangladesh’s future population, this study compares the estimated populations of two popular population models, the Malthusian and the logistic population models, with the country’s census population published by BBS. We also tried to find out which model gives a better approximation for forecasting the past, present, and future population between these two models. 展开更多

Background: Tooth loss results in impaired mastication, which in turn, makes it difficult to chew hard food, consequently leading to deteriorate dietary habits and to develop hypertension. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of tooth loss on blood pressure among Congolese population. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from October 2019 until December 2023 among Congolese population aged at least 30 years reporting to the living in DR Congo. All participants were enrolled from Dental Clinic located in the DR Congo. To be eligible to participate in the study, were the willing to participate and having signed informed consent;had a missing tooth;had carried out blood pressure measurement (hypertension/normotensive). The exclusion criteria were determined: being less than 30 years old, being pregnant for women considering the risk of existing gestational hypertension, obesity, excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, and diabetes. Hypertension was defined as the mean of three measurements of systolic blood pressure (SBP) (140 mmHg or higher), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (90 mm or higher) or physician diagnosed hypertension confirmed from medical records. We determined the number of tooth loss from oral examination. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to investigate the effect of tooth loss on blood pressure. Results: In all, 25,396 participants were enrolled among Congolese population for this study. After oral examination, 13,421 were excluded for no tooth loss and 11,975 participants were selected. The average number of tooth loss among study population was 11.06. Among the participants with hypertension had lost an average of 11 teeth, significantly higher than those without hypertension (6.09) (p = 0.001). After adjusting for covariates (socio-demographic characteristics), tooth loss (>10) was significantly associated with hypertension, with OR = 1.32 (95% CI 1.073 - 2.38). Conclusion: Tooth loss maybe associated with severe hypertension among Congolese population adults. Prevention of tooth loss is very important to the overall health of this population. 展开更多

Evidence has shown that differential transcriptomic profiles among human populations from diverse ancestries, supporting the role of genetic architecture in regulating gene expression alongside environmental stimuli.Genetic variants that regulate gene expression, known as expression quantitative trait loci(eQTL),are primarily shaped by human migration history and evolutionary forces, likewise, regulation of gene expression in principle could have been influenced by these events. Therefore,a comprehensive understanding of how human evolution impacts eQTL offers important insights into how phenotypic diversity is shaped.Recent studies, however, suggest that eQTL is enriched in genes that are selectively constrained.Whether eQTL is minimally affected by selective pressures remains an open question and requires comprehensive investigations. In addition, such studies are primarily dominated by the major populations of European ancestry, leaving many marginalized populations underrepresented. These observations indicate there exists a fundamental knowledge gap in the role of genomics variation on phenotypic diversity, which potentially hinders precision medicine. This article aims to revisit the abundance of eQTL across diverse populations and provide an overview of their impact from the population and evolutionary genetics perspective, subsequently discuss their influence on phenomics,as well as challenges and opportunities in the applications to precision medicine. 展开更多

The correct understanding of fish population structure plays a positive role in their fishery management. The dotted gizzard shad,Konosirus punctatus,is widely distributed in the coastal waters of the northwestern Pacific. With the over-exploitation of economically important fishes, its importance is increasingly prominent. To further examine the population genetic structure of K.punctatus across the northwestern Pacific, the amplified fragment length polymorphism(AFLP)and the inter-simple sequence repeats(ISSRs)were employed to perform genetic variation analysis. The results showed that the combination of polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and silver staining can effectively detect genetic variation for K.punctatus populations. The average proportions of polymorphic loci were 46.26%and 87.13%for AFLP and ISSR markers, respectively, and the genetic diversity parameters showed no obvious differences among populations. Both analysis molecular variance(AMOVA)and pairwise F_(st)suggested that there was significant genetic differentiation between Chinese and Japanese populations. All samples also clustered into two clades based on the unweighted pair-group method analysis(UPGMA)tree by two markers, which indicated significant genetic differentiation among populations.Consistent with the previous studies, there are two highly differentiated groups at the nuclear gene level and they were suggested to be treated as two separate genetic management units. The results of the present study could provide the genetic management strategy for this important economic species. 展开更多

Global warming has severe effects on cold-water habitats. The Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass(YSCWM)is a typical cold-water habitat in the western Pacific Ocean. The southern YSCWM face much more environmental pressure than the northern YSCWM.We hypothesize that the cold-water Ophiuroid species Ophiura sarsii vadicola, the dominant benthic species in the YSCWM,will be less abundant with an ageing population in the northern YSCWM.Based on a survey in 2018,we found the density of O.sarsii vadicola reached 315 inds./m^(2)in the northern Yellow Sea,higher than previous records.Biomass and organic mass peaked at 45.5 g/m^(2)and 4.89 g/m^(2).There was a strong linear relationship between wet weight and dry weight/ash-free dry weight(AFDW).Over 48000 individuals were measured(diameter:1.0-17.5 mm)and were notably smaller than related species from higher latitudes.A Gompertz growth model was established by examining ossicle growth bands.Age structures differed between the northern and southern YSCWM,and the former was dominated by younger individuals. This study enriched our understanding on the ecology of brittle star and provides valuable data and insights for future research on the benthic ecosystems of the Yellow Sea. 展开更多

Background As an important genetic resource of chickens, gamecock has unique morphological and behavioral characteristics such as large size, muscular development and strong aggression, making it a good model for studying muscle development and behavior patterns,as well as an excellent breeding material.Gamecocks are distributed worldwide, forming different breeds and strains. However, the single or multiple origin of global gamecocks has not been fully established and much remains unknown about genetic introgression events between gamecocks and other chickens. Therefore,in this study, based on whole genome data of gamecocks,Chinese indigenous chickens, commercial chickens and wild jungle fowls,we performed population structure analysis, selection signal analysis, and genomic introgression analysis of gamecocks. Results The population structure analysis revealed that gamecocks have multiple origins. In addition,we used Fst,π-Ratio and XP-EHH methods to explore the candidate signatures of positive selection in gamecocks.A total number of fifteen shared candidate genes were identified using the three different detection strategies.Among these candidate genes,ETV1,DGKB,AGMO,MEOX2,ISPD and PLCB4 are related to the growth and muscle development, fighting performance and neurodevelopment of gamecocks.Furthermore,we detected the introgression event at the MYBPHL region from the Gallus sonneratii into Euramerican gamecocks and at the CPZ gene region from the Gallus gallus gallus into multiple gamecock populations, respectively, indicating the introgression from the wild junglefowl may impact the skeletal and muscle development as well as aggressive behavior of gamecocks. Conclusions In summary,we conducted a genome-wide exploration of gamecocks from multiple regions worldwide. Our analysis confirmed multiple origins of gamecocks and detected several candidate genes that are possibly related to important traits and characteristics in gamecocks.More importantly, this is the first study that has detected introgression events and genes from wild jungle fowls to gamecocks, which provides evidence of the wild jungle fowls contributing to the genetic diversity of gamecocks. Our findings offer new perspectives on the impact of introgression on gamecocks, and provide a basis for further resource conservation and utilization of gamecock,as well as provide excellent material for the genetic improvement of domestic chickens. 展开更多
