Professional learning communities(PLCs)have seen a rapid spread all around the world over the past 30 years.Since then it has been proved that they can improve teaching quality and thereby the achievement of students,and so PLCs have attracted increasing attention especially from education systems.In China,PLCs have been developed vigorously within schools since the implementation of the‘New Curriculum Reform’in 2000.However,the west has paid scant attention to and were not familiar with them since most research in this field in China was published in Chinese.Furthermore,PLCs are influenced by contextual and cultural factors,and therefore PLCs in Chinese education systems are different from those in Anglo-American settings due to long-standing cultural differences,which require consideration.Therefore,this research will investigate the PLCs in China that may be of interest.Many recent studies have shown that,although PLCs have made significant progress in Chinese urban middle schools through the enthusiastic efforts of educators and scholars,there are still several barriers.The primary purpose of this research is to review the development of PLCs and additionally to analyse the challenges faced by the principals. 展开更多

Language is a part of culture and the carrier of the culture. Foreign language study is not only the process of learning a language but also the process of taking the language as a means of information transmission to comprehend culture. With the implementation of the New Curriculum Standard (2017) in senior English, the notions of cultural awareness and culture instruction are being accepted and carried out in EFL (English as Foreign Language) classroom by English teachers. This paper tries to analyze the relationship between language and culture, the contents and goals in teaching foreign language and culture, the significance of teaching culture in foreign language education. This paper concludes with recommendations for improving culture teaching: Learning a foreign language is inseparable from learning its culture; The knowledge of culture differences may help students to make less pragmatic errors and become proficient in cross-cultural communication; Great efforts should also be paid to the development of the student’s cross-cultural awareness, and then the quality of English teaching could be really improved. 展开更多

Providing further knowledge to and refinement of public facility location theory,this paper focuses on the distribution of basic educational facilities in China.The aim towards an equilibrium in the distribution of education resources has captured widespread attention in recent years.The basis of an education equilibrium is the balanced distribution of teaching facilities.Using the spatial analysis function of ArcGIS,this article discusses the evolution characteristics of education equilibrium and explores its dynamics with reference to primary and middle schools in Changchun City,Jilin Province from 2007 to 2013.The study found the spatial distribution of primary and middle schools in Changchun was uneven and the characteristic of close internal but sparse external has not changed.Low-level equilibrium of primary and middle schools in Changchun has been basically realized,but high-level equilibrium is far from being realized.Although there has been a trend towards suburbanization of these schools in recent years,the high entrance threshold has determined that high-quality school opportunity(schools with high-level resource allocation)has not increased for people.The spatial distribution of primary and middle schools is related to the factors of population,real estate,transportation and the education system itself.Education space,living space,and traffic space all interact and together affect urban spatial structure. 展开更多

An Exploratory Study of the Application of Modern Distance Learning Resources for Rural Elementary and Middle Schools in Western China:The Case of Three Cities in Gansu Province

Based on a specially adapted questionnaire,research was carried out to explore how resources in modern distance learning were being applied in rural elementary and middle schools in Western China,in order to enhance the usefulness of the allocated resources.One particular distance learning project was used as the subject of the study,and teachers at 22 rural elementary and middle schools in 3 prefecture-level cities in Gansu Province,Western China,acted as the sample group.Analysis of the teachers’questionnaire responses showed that,(1)there is a comparatively high number of modern distance learning resources in use in rural elementary and middle schools in Western China,and they are being effectively used in the classroom to assist in everyday teaching;(2)teachers of rural elementary and middle schools in Western China have the ability to make use of these modern resources,and can obtain them by way of multi-channel inquiry;(3)modern distance learning resources are already becoming important components of everyday teaching resources in Western China;and(4)teachers are generally able to apply these resources well,despite some problems remaining.In the case of problems in application,most teachers are able to find adequate solutions. 展开更多

This paper attempts to give a brief introduction to the TEFL situation in primary and middle schools of Guangdong Province and then put forward some ideas for a TEFL development plan for the coming five years. The points of view and propositions presented are only the author’s personal opinions.Guangdong Province, located in the south of China, with a comparatively developed culture and economy, is one of the provinces in China whose trade relations with foreign countries can be traced back to a time as early as the Tang Dynasty. Hence, it not only has the country’s most well-known home-towns of overseas Chinese, but also keeps close relations with the outside world and consequently has had a better foundation of foreign language education in the past. Nevertheless, for a long period of time since the founding of the PRC, owing to various reasons, the quality of foreign languages teaching and learning has been very unsatisfactory. Integrating local cultural resources into language teaching is a significant trend in fostering students’core competencies.This study addresses the challenge of effectively implementing China’s educational policy of“Core Competencies for English as a Subject”in middle school classrooms by leveraging the unique revolutionary(“Red”)culture of Tangshan City.The research developed and tested a pedagogical model that utilizes Tangshan’s rich Red Culture heritage-such as the Kailuan Miners’Movement and the Xifengkou Great Wall Resistance relics-as authentic content for English language learning.Employing a mixed-methods approach,including literature review,fieldwork,action research,and case analysis in partner middle schools,the project involved designing thematic teaching resources(e.g.,lesson plans,micro-lectures)and implementing interactive activities like role-playing and project-based learning.Findings indicate that this localized approach significantly enhanced students’engagement,cultural awareness,critical thinking,and language application skills,effectively addressing the four dimensions of English core competencies:language ability,cultural awareness,thinking capacity,and learning ability.The study concludes that the“Local Culture-Integrated Core Competency Model”provides a practical,replicable framework for synergizing values education with language acquisition.It offers valuable insights for educators worldwide seeking to incorporate local history and values into foreign language curricula,promoting deeper contextual learning. 展开更多
