Lindane mineralization was slow and limited in both soils. Evolution of 14CO2 increased with time but only reached 3. 5 to 5. 5 % of the initial 14C-concentration within 90 days. At that time both soils contained about 88 % of the applied radiocarbon; 33 % to 37% of the initial dose was unextractable and assumed bound to the soils. The methanol-ex-tractable 14C primarily contained lindane with traces of minor metabolites. Radiorespirometry was used to eva1uate the effect of lindane on soil microbial activity. Low concentrations of the insecticide initially supressed 14CO2 evolution from U-14C-glucose and microbial activity was significantly inhibited by 10 mg lindane/kg soil.展开更多

Bulls of Harer cattle breed man...The present study was conducted to evaluate the role of effective microbial supplementation to feed on the load of Salmonella in the mesenteric and sub-iliac lymph nodes of beef cattle. Bulls of Harer cattle breed managed at Chercher Oda-Bultum Farmers Union beef Farm were used as study subject. A total of 130 bulls were used using double blinded randomized controlled field trial based on parallel group design from January 2018 to July 2018. The study animals were randomly assigned to the treatment group (n = 100) and control group (n = 30). The feed of treatment group was mixed with EM at dose of 5 × 10<sup>10</sup> cfu/day/head and supplemented for 90, 100 and 115 days while that of the control group was mixed with molasses, which acts as placebo. Both the treatment and control were slaughtered and two lymph nodes were collected from each animal under strict sterile condition and processed for the isolation and identification of Salmonella using standard procedure. A significant (p = 0.001) reduction in the load of Salmonella was observed in the lymph node of treatment group as compared to the control group. The load of Salmonella was significantly affected by length of feeding period and age of bulls. This study indicated that effective microbial supplementation to bulls from Harar cattle reduces the load of Salmonella in the lymph node of beef cattle thereby potentially minimizing the economic and public health impacts of Salmonella infection.展开更多

The relative risk of Salmonella isolation in the control was 2.12 (1.41 - 3.20) compared to treatment group. The absolute and relative risk reduction in the treatment were 37% (CI = 17% - 57%) and 53% (CI = 29% - 69%), respectively. This preliminary study indicated that effective microbial supplementation of beef cattle feed reduced the occurrences of Salmonella in the lymph node of beef cattle, thereby potentially minimizing the economic and public health impacts of Salmonella infection. Hurricanes cause significant damage to tropical forests;however,little is known of their effects on decomposition and decomposer communities.This study demonstrated that canopy debris deposited during Hurricane Otto s...Hurricanes cause significant damage to tropical forests;however,little is known of their effects on decomposition and decomposer communities.This study demonstrated that canopy debris deposited during Hurricane Otto stimulated sequential changes in soil carbon(C)and nitrogen(N)components,and decomposer microbial communities over 5 years.The initial response phase occurred within 2 years post-hurricane and appeared associated with decomposition of the labile canopy debris,suggested by:increased DNA sequences(MPS)of the Acidobacterial community(as common decomposers of labile plant material),decreases in total organic C(TOC),increased biomass C,respiration,and NH_(4)^(+),conversion of organic C in biomass,and decreased MPS of complex organic C decomposing(CCD_(ec))Fungal community.After 3 years post-hurricane,the later response phase appeared associated with decomposition of the more stable components of the canopy debris,suggested by:increased MPS of the Fungal CCDec community,TOC,stabilized Respiration,decreased Biomass C,the return to pre-hurricane levels of the conversion of organic C to biomass,and decreased MPS of Acidobacterial community.These changes in the microbial community compositions resulted in progressive decomposition of the hurricane-deposited canopy material within 5 years,resulting several potential indicators of different stages of decomposition and soil recovery post-disturbance.展开更多
