A structured method to generate conformal finite element(FE)mesh for realistic 3D woven textile reinforced composite is proposed. It is based on a voxel structure mesh reconstruction framework and aims to provide accurate composite model at yarn level with material properties ready for use in commercial FE software. The textile representative volume element(RVE)is generated at filament level implementing the digital element method.Yarn structure is determined by filament bundle with variant cross-section shapes along its path.Yarn surface is then extracted using the Delaunay triangulation algorithm and a surface mesh is initiated. Then, the mesh domain is defined and constructed by voxel structure.Periodic boundary conditions,inter-yarn,and yarnmatrix interfaces are eliminated by re-mesh and mesh optimization. An element splitting rule is established to split the voxel unit into sub-elements to create smooth interface.A 3D orthogonal weave fabric reinforced composite is generated and simulated under compressive load. The composite structure and damage morphology are in good agreement with those of the experiment. 展开更多

A meso-scale truss network model was developed to predict chloride diffusion in concrete. The model regards concrete as a three-phase composite of mortar matrix, coarse aggregates, and the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) between the mortar matrix and the aggregates. The diffusion coefficient of chloride in the mortar and the ITZ can be analytically determined with only the water-to-cement ratio and volume fraction of fine aggregates. Fick's second law of diffusion was used as the governing equation for chloride diffusion in a homogenous medium (e.g., mortar); it was discretized and applied to the truss network model. The solution procedure of the truss network model based on the diffusion law and the meso-scale composite structure of concrete is outlined. Additionally, the dependence of the diffusion coefficient of chloride in the mortar and the ITZ on exposure duration and temperature is taken into account to illustrate their effect on chloride diffusion coefficient. The numerical results show that the exposure duration and environmental temperature play important roles in the diffusion rate of chloride ions in concrete. It is also concluded that the meso-scale truss network model can be applied to chloride transport analysis of damaged (or cracked) concrete. 展开更多

Methods of experimental observations, theoretical analysis and meso-scale modeling were used to study the propagation processes of shock waves in dry and wet sandstone under dynamic impact in this paper.According to the results from the dynamic impact experiments with velocity of 0.2-0.5 km/s, it was found that the velocity of shock wave increases linearly with water content. Additionally, the velocity of the shock wave in the sandstone showed a linearly increased regularity with the increasement of the impact velocity, which was proved by theory in this paper. Furthermore, meso-scale simulation models were performed and the simulation results showed that sandstone's porosity reduced the shock waves velocity compared to nonporous materials. Pore space filled with water counteracts the effects of porosity, resulted in larger shock wave velocity. 展开更多

This study demonstrates a homogenization approach via a modified state-based peridynamic(PD)method to predict the effective elastic properties of composite materials with periodic microstructure. The procedure of modeling the PD unit cell(UC)of continuous fiber-reinforced composite is presented.Periodic boundary conditions are derived and implemented through the Lagrange multiplier method.A matrix-dominated approach for modeling the interphase properties between dissimilar materials is proposed. The periodicity and continuity assumptions are employed to determine the stress and strain fields,as well as the effective elastic properties. The PD-UCs of square and hexagonal packs as well as the 0/90 laminate microstructure are modeled and compared with the analytical, numerical and experimental results from the literature.Good agreement of predicted effective properties can be observed.Unlike other PD homogenization approaches, the effective material properties can be directly and individually obtained from simple loading conditions. 展开更多

In reinforced concrete structures, corrosion of the rebar produces 2–6 times more corrosion product than the original material, creating pressure on the surrounding concrete, leading to cracking. The study of corrosion and cracking in reinforced concrete structures is therefore of great importance for enhancing the durability of concrete.Unlike many previous studies,we used ribbed rebar similar to that used commercially and considered the mechanical behavior of the interface transition zone(ITZ)between the aggregate and mortar to simulate the processes of corrosion and cracking of reinforced concrete structures. We explored the failure mode of the interface layer under uniform corrosion and the influence of different factors on the corrosion expansion cracking and the shedding mode of a concrete cover. This was achieved by establishing a three-phase meso-scale model of concrete based on secondary development of ABAQUS,simulating the mechanical behavior of the ITZ using a cohesive element, and establishing a rust expansion cracking model for single and multiple rebars. The results showed that:(1)Under uniform rust expansion, concrete cracks are distributed in a cross pattern with a slightly shorter lower limb.(2)When the corrosion rate is low,the ITZ is not damaged. With an increase in the corrosion rate, the proportion of elements with tensile damage in the ITZ first increases and then decreases.(3)In the case of a single rebar, the larger the cover thickness, the higher the corrosion rate corresponding to ITZ failure, and the arrangement of the rebar has little influence on the ITZ failure mode.(4)In the case of multiple rebars, the concrete cover cracks when the rebar spacing is small, and wedge-shaped spalling occurs when the spacing is large. 展开更多

The eddies with diameters of 50–200 km can greatly impact the transport of heat, momentum, and tracers. A high-resolution wave-tide-circulation coupled model was developed to simulate the meso-scale eddy in the SCS in this study. The aim of this study is to examine the model ability to simulate the meso-scale eddy in the SCS without data assimilations The simulated Sea Surface Height(SSH) anomalies agree with the observed the AVISO SSH anomalies well. The simulated subsurface temperature profiles agree with the CTD observation data from the ROSE(Responses of Marine Hazards to climate change in the Western Pacific) project. The simulated upper-ocean currents also agree with the main circulation based on observations. A warm eddy is identified in winter in the northern SCS. The position and domain of the simulated eddy are confirmed by the observed sea surface height data from the AVISO. The result shows that the model has the ability to simulate the meso-scale eddy in the SCS without data assimilation. The three-dimensional structure of the meso-scale eddy in the SCS is analyzed using the model result. It is found that the eddy center is tilted vertically, which agrees with the observation. It is also found that the velocity center of the eddy does not coincide with the temperature center of the eddy. The result shows that the model has the ability to simulate the meso-scale eddy in the SCS without data assimilations. Further study on the forming mechanism and the three-dimensional structure of the meso-scale eddies will be carried out using the model result and cruise observation data in the near future. 展开更多

Mesoscale eddies (MEs) in the South China Sea (SCS) simulated by a quasi-global eddy-resolving ocean general circulation model are evaluated against satellite data during 1993-2007. The modeled ocean data show more activity than shown by the satellite data and reproduces more eddies in the SCS. A total of 345 (428) cyclonic eddies (CEs) and 330 (371) anti-cyclonic eddies (AEs) generated for satellite (model) data are identified during the study period, showing increase of -24% and -12% for the model data, respectively. Compared with eddies in satellite, the simulated eddies tend to have smaller radii, larger amplitudes, a slightly longer lifetime, faster movement and rotation speed, a slightly larger nonlinear properties (U/c) in the model. However, the spatial distribution of generated eddies appears to be inhomogeneous, with more CEs in the northern part of SCS and fewer AEs in the southern part. This is attributed to the exaggerated Kuroshio intrusion in the model because the small islands in the Luzon Strait are still not well resolved although the horizontal resolution reaches (1/10)°. The seasonal variability in the number and the amplitude of eddies generated is also investigated. 展开更多

The catalyst layer (CL) of proton exchange mem-brane fuel cell (PEMFC) involves various particles and pores in meso-scale, which has an important effect on the mass, charge (proton and electron) and heat transport coupled with the electrochemical reactions. The coarse-grained molecular dynamics (CG-MD) method is employed as a meso-scale structure reconstruction technique to mimic the self-organization phenomena in the fabrication steps of a CL. The meso-scale structure obtained at the equilibrium state is further analyzed by molecular dynamic (MD) software to provide the necessary microscopic parameters for understanding of multi-scale and-physics processes in CLs. The primary pore size distribution (PSD) and active platinum (Pt) surface areas are also calculated and then compared with the experiments. In addition, we also highlight the implementation method to combine microscopic elementary kinetic reaction schemes with the CG-MD approaches to provide insight into the reactions in CLs. The concepts from CG modeling with particle hydrodynamics (SPH) and the problems on coupling of SPH with finite element modeling (FEM) methods are further outlined and discussed to understand the effects of the meso-scale transport phenomena in fuel cells. 展开更多

This presentation predicts the elastic properties of three-dimensional(3D)orthogonal woven composite(3DOWC)by finite element analysis based on micro/meso repeated unit cell(RUC)models.First, the properties of fiber yarn are obtained by analysis on a micro-scale RUC model assuming fibers in a hexagonal distribution pattern in the polymer matrix. Then a full thickness meso-scale RUC model including weft yarns, warp yarns,Z-yarns and pure resin zones is established and full stiffness matrix of the 3DOWC including the in-plane and flexural constants are predicted. For thick 3DOWC with large number of weft, warp layers,an alternative analysis method is proposed in which an inner meso-RUC and a surface meso-RUC are established, respectively. Then the properties of 3DOWC are deduced based on laminate theory and properties of the inner and surface layers. The predicted results by the above two alternative methods are in good experimental agreement. 展开更多

The understanding of unsaturated flow in heterogeneous formations is a prerequisite to the understanding of pollutant transfer in the vadose zone and the proper management of infiltration basins settled over such heterogeneous formations. This study addresses the effect of lithological heterogeneity of a glaciofluvial deposit on flow in the vadose zone underneath an infiltration basin settled in the Lyon suburbs. The basin had already been the subject of several previous studies, some of which demonstrated the impact of soil heterogeneity. But all of them were only based on the sedimentological study of a trench and no study addressed the potential spatial variability of results due to the spatial variability of soil heterogeneity. In this study, we model flow in the vadose zone for several case studies, including drainage, water infiltration during a rainfall event, and a complete meteorological chronic. These calculations were conducted for several sections, previously characterized in the basin using GPR and sedimentological study and compared with a blank (homogeneous section). The results clearly show that heterogeneity impacts unsaturated flow and that these impacts depend upon the section considered. Some geometrical architectural and textural parameters were proposed to explain the spatial variability and effect of the soil heterogeneity on unsaturated flow, thus establishing the first step towards modeling unsaturated flow in the basin at the meso-scale. 展开更多

Taking Shenzhen city as an example, the statistical and physical relationship between the density of pollutants and various atmospheric parameters are analyzed in detail, and a space-partitioned city air pollution potential prediction scheme is established based on it. The scheme considers quantitatively more than ten factors at the surface and planetary boundary layer (PBL), especially the effects of anisotropy of geographical environment, and treats wind direction as an independent impact factor. While the scheme treats the prediction equation respectively for different pollutants according to their differences in dilute properties, it considers as well the possible differences in dilute properties at different districts of the city under the same atmospheric condition, treating predictions respectively for different districts. Finally, the temporally and spatially high resolution predictions for the atmospheric factors are made with a high resolution numerical model, and further the space-partitioned and time-variational city pollution potential predictions are made. The scheme is objective and quantitative, and with clear physical meaning, so it is suitable to use in making high resolution air pollution predictions. 展开更多

The Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS)technique enables critical engineering predictions and is widely adopted. However, since this iterative computation relies on the fixed-point iteration,it may converge to unexpected non-physical phase points in practice. We conduct an analysis on the phase-space characteristics and the fixed-point theory underlying the k-ε turbulence model, and employ the classical Kolmogorov flow as a framework, leveraging its direct numerical simulation(DNS)data to construct a one-dimensional(1D)system under periodic/fixed boundary conditions. The RANS results demonstrate that under periodic boundary conditions, the k-ε model exhibits only a unique trivial fixed point, with asymptotes capturing the phase portraits. The stability of this trivial fixed point is determined by a mathematically derived stability phase diagram, indicating the fact that the k-ε model will never converge to correct values under periodic conditions. In contrast, under fixed boundary conditions, the model can yield a stable non-trivial fixed point. The evolutionary mechanisms and their relationship with boundary condition settings systematically explain the inherent limitations of the k-ε model,i.e.,its deficiency in computing the flow field under periodic boundary conditions and sensitivity to boundary-value specifications under fixed boundary conditions. These conclusions are finally validated with the open-source code OpenFOAM. 展开更多

Utilizing finite element analysis, the ballistic protection provided by a combination of perforated D-shaped and base armor plates, collectively referred to as radiator armor,is evaluated.ANSYS Explicit Dynamics is employed to simulate the ballistic impact of 7.62 mm armor-piercing projectiles on Aluminum AA5083-H116 and Steel Secure 500 armors, focusing on the evaluation of material deformation and penetration resistance at varying impact points. While the D-shaped armor plate is penetrated by the armor-piercing projectiles, the combination of the perforated D-shaped and base armor plates successfully halts penetration.A numerical model based on the finite element method is developed using software such as SolidWorks and ANSYS to analyze the interaction between radiator armor and bullet. The perforated design of radiator armor is to maintain airflow for radiator function, with hole sizes smaller than the bullet core diameter to protect radiator assemblies.Predictions are made regarding the brittle fracture resulting from the projectile core′s bending due to asymmetric impact, and the resulting fragments failed to penetrate the perforated base armor plate.Craters are formed on the surface of the perforated D-shaped armor plate due to the impact of projectile fragments. The numerical model accurately predicts hole growth and projectile penetration upon impact with the armor, demonstrating effective protection of the radiator assemblies by the radiator armor. 展开更多

Recommendation systems are key to boosting user engagement, satisfaction, and retention, particularly on media platforms where personalized content is vital.Sequential recommendation systems learn from user-item interactions to predict future items of interest. However, many current methods rely on unique user and item IDs,limiting their ability to represent users and items effectively, especially in zero-shot learning scenarios where training data is scarce. With the rapid development of Large Language Models(LLMs),researchers are exploring their potential to enhance recommendation systems. However, there is a semantic gap between the linguistic semantics of LLMs and the collaborative semantics of recommendation systems, where items are typically indexed by IDs.Moreover, most research focuses on item representations, neglecting personalized user modeling. To address these issues,we propose a sequential recommendation framework using LLMs,called CIT-Rec,a model that integrates Collaborative semantics for user representation and Image and Text information for item representation to enhance Recommendations.Specifically,by aligning intuitive image information with text containing semantic features,we can more accurately represent items, improving item representation quality. We focus not only on item representations but also on user representations. To more precisely capture users’personalized preferences,we use traditional sequential recommendation models to train on users’historical interaction data, effectively capturing behavioral patterns. Finally,by combining LLMs and traditional sequential recommendation models,we allow the LLM to understand linguistic semantics while capturing collaborative semantics.Extensive evaluations on real-world datasets show that our model outperforms baseline methods, effectively combining user interaction history with item visual and textual modalities to provide personalized recommendations. 展开更多

The National Geophysical Data Center(NGDC)of the United States has collected aeromagnetic data for input into a series of geomagnetic models to improve model resolution;however,in the Tibetan Plateau region,ground-based observations remain insufficient to clearly reflect the characteristics of the region’s lithospheric magnetism. In this study,we evaluate the lithospheric magnetism of the Tibetan Plateau by using a 3D surface spline model based on observations from>200 newly constructed repeat stations(portable stations)to determine the spatial distribution of plateau geomagnetism,as well as its correlation with the tectonic features of the region. We analyze the relationships between M≥5 earthquakes and lithospheric magnetic field variations on the Tibetan Plateau and identify regions susceptible to strong earthquakes. We compare the geomagnetic results with those from an enhanced magnetic model(EMM2015)developed by the NGDC and provide insights into improving lithospheric magnetic field calculations in the Tibetan Plateau region.Further research reveals that these magnetic anomalies exhibit distinct differences from the magnetic-seismic correlation mechanisms observed in other tectonic settings;here, they are governed primarily by the combined effects of compressional magnetism, thermal magnetism, and deep thermal stress. This study provides new evidence of geomagnetic anomalies on the Tibetan Plateau, interprets them physically, and demonstrates their potential for identifying seismic hazard zones on the Plateau. 展开更多

(Quasi-)closed-form results for the statistical properties of unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV)airto-ground channels are derived for the first time using a novel spatial-vector-based method from a threedimensional(3-D)arbitrary-elevation one-cylinder model. The derived results include a closed-form expression for the space-time correlation function and some quasi-closed-form ones for the space-Doppler power spectrum density, the level crossing rate, and the average fading duration, which are shown to be the generalizations of those previously obtained from the two-dimensional(2-D)one-ring model and the 3-D low-elevation one-cylinder model for terrestrial mobile-to-mobile channels. The close agreements between the theoretical results and the simulations as well as the measurements validate the utility of the derived channel statistics.Based on the derived expressions, the impacts of some parameters on the channel characteristics are investigated in an effective, efficient, and explicable way, which leads to a general guideline on the manual parameter estimation from the measurement description. 展开更多
