The Merguechoum fluorite-barite mineralization, located in the Eastern Meseta of Morocco,is hosted in the Late Hercynian granite. The ore consists of fine crystals of fluorite 1,massive barite 1,euhedral crystals of fluorite 2,and barite 2 with calcite and minor quartz and sulfides. The Merguechoum ore deposits have never been investigated. This study was the first contribution that studied the genesis of fluorite and barite. The ore occurs as dissemination within granite intrusion and also fills the NE-SWtrending meter-sized fractures and faults. The values of the total Rare Earth Elements and Yttrium(REY)and the ratios of LREY/HREY,Y/Ho,Tb/Ca,and Tb/La indicate that the Merguechoum fluorite precipitated from hydrothermal fluids, likely basinal brines, which interacted with the Hercynian granite. The REY data indicate that the ore-forming fluids of the early stage have intensely interacted with the Hercynian granite compared to those of the late ore stage. The gradual decrease in the europium(Eu/Eu^(*)),yttrium(Y/Y^(*)),and cerium(Ce/Ce^(*))anomalies and a low concentration ofΣREY observed in the second ore stage compared to the first ore stage suggest an increase in p H and fO_(2)and by inference a decrease in temperature during the evolution of the hydrothermal system. This evolution could be explained by fluid mixing between the ascending basinal hydrothermal fluids and the diluted sulfate-rich meteoric water barite separates from selected samples reveal that the dissolved sulfates(SO_(4)^(2-))were derived from Permian–Triassic sulfates and/or coeval poreseawater sulfates. The proposed fluid mixing triggered the precipitation of an early-stage F-Ba assemblage followed by the second-stage F-Ba mineralization.Geologic fieldwork,REY inventories, and isotope data point to the ore genesis during the Permian–Triassic extensional tectonic activity concerning the Pangea rifting. This extensional tectonic environment is likely the driving force that mobilized a large amount of the ore-forming basinal brines along the available faults and fractures to the loci of ore deposition. 展开更多

The Mekkam inlier is located 50 km southeast of the town of Taourirt,in northeastern Morocco. It offers a great opportunity for the study of Variscan magmatism in Morocco. This inlier is punctuated by small magmatic bodies which we will characterize through a petrographic and geochemical study to situate this inlier in its geotectonic context. The petrographic study revealed the existence of three trends:acidic, intermediate, and basic, which are represented by facies ranging from granites to basanites, including andesites, rhyolites, trachytes, dacites, quartz microdiorites,Aplite and microgranites. All these facies have a mineralogical assemblage dominated by quartz, plagioclase, oligoclase, potassium feldspar, pyroxene, and biotite;the most abundant accessory minerals are zircon and apatite.Green hornblende is found in microdiorites and dacites. The geochemical analysis, conducted through the examination of major elements, trace elements, and rare earth elements, has uncovered the presence of two distinct magmatic series:a calc-alkaline series of the island arc type or active continental margin, and another alkaline series of syn-collision.Based on this combined data,we propose that the Mekkam sector represents a magmatic arc developed within a compressional tectonic regime located above a subduction zone, which was later followed by an intracontinental collision phase. 展开更多

The Antarctic Paleogene marine fossil record has been the key to reconstructing the evolution of the Weddellian Sea and final dismemberment of Southern Gondwana. In this context,Eocene marine vertebrates from Seymour(Marambio)Island have provided valuable information. We present the first Eocene record of marine reptiles from the southern Atlantic Coast of South America. This corresponds to several postcranial turtle remains represented by a proximal end of the right humerus, three caudal and one thoracic vertebrae,a fragment of the left pubis, and ten ossicles of the dorsal carapace, coming from the Leticia Formation(late-mid Eocene)at Cabo Tiburones,Tierra del Fuego,Argentina. These materials show severalfeatures such as the size and general morphology of the humerus and vertebrae, and the presence of relatively small, irregular, smooth, and unkeeled ossicles, which allow us to assign them to Dermochelyidae indet.Dermochelyids are a cosmopolitan group ofcryptodiran turtles, registered from the late Cretaceous up to the recent, with some physiological-biological peculiarities(e.g.,endothermy and an exclusive jellyfish-based diet)and characterized by the presence of an osseous carapace formed by ossicles. The new finding from the Leticia Formation is an addition to the scarce and extremely fragmentary record of Eocene dermochelyids from the southern seas like those from the La Meseta and Submeseta formations(Antarctica)and the Waihao and Burnside formations(New Zealand). This new information allows us to discuss the presence of these turtles in such high latitudes in the past and its implication in the evolution of the Weddellian fauna. 展开更多

The Astrapotheria constitutes one of the five orders of extinct South American native ungulates, with a fossil record that also extends to the Eocene of the Antarctic Peninsula. In contrast to the abundant specimens known for litoptern Sparnotheriodontidae and metatherians, astrapotheres are represented by scant remains assigned to the endemic Antarctodon sobrali and indeterminate astrapotheres, restricted to levels 35C_(u0)and 35n of the Cucullaea I Allomember of the La Meseta Formation. The discovery of alower molar assignable to this species in the Eocene levels of Seymour(Marambio)Island, enables a revision of the diagnosis and the homologies of the dental characters used to describe this taxon.A reanalysis of its phylogenetic relationships reveals the nearly simultaneous presence of basal astrapotheres in the early Eocene of Itaboraí(Brazil),Patagonia, and West Antarctica. These taxa are characterized by lacking dental specializations usually associated with more abrasive diets like terminal forms of Uruguaytheriinae and Astrapotheriinae.Antarctodon appears to have thrived on the Antarctic continent during the Early Eocene Climatic Optimum within the paleoclimatic context of a hot-house world.Unlike present conditions in Antarctica where no terrestrial mammals inhabit, the early Eocene climate was characterized by warmer temperatures and a biologically diverse environment rich in primary producers, dominated by Nothofagus forests, encompassing both deciduous and evergreen forests, which supported a diverse assemblage of continental vertebrates.
