Assessing the carbon sink potential of marine aquaculture is critical to fostering sustainable marine economic development and achieving carbon neutrality.This study evaluates the carbon sink potential of four nearshore aquaculture systems in China:floating raft,net cage,pond,and tidal flat.China’s coastal aquaculture shows a dramatic potential range from−5401.28×10^(4)t to 84.65×10^(4)t,acting as both a carbon sink and a source.Floating raft(11.19×10^(4)t to 105.65×10^(4)t)and tidal flat(42.83×10^(4)t to 114.35×10^(4)t)are net carbon sinks.In contrast,net cage(−427.39×10^(4)t to−4.26×10^(4)t)and pond(−5027.91×10^(4)t to−131.09×10^(4)t)are significant net carbon sources.This heterogeneity is driven by differences in species,feed inputs,energy consumption,and management practices.The results highlight the need for targeted low-carbon technologies in high-emission systems to maximize carbon sequestration and mitigate their environmental impacts.This study provides a scientific basis for optimizing carbon management and offers insights for global sustainable aquaculture and carbon neutrality. 展开更多

A Sensitive Method for theδ^(15)N Measurement of Nanomolar Chl-a in Marine Environment

Chlorophyll-a is the most abundant chlorophyll pigment produced by marine phytoplankton,and it bears the isotope signature of the nitrate source assimilated in the N-atoms that are embedded in its porphyrin ring.The chloropigment and its degradation product,i.e.,pheophytin-a,could be well preserved in marine sediment,usually at nanomolar level.A sensitive and accurate measurement of theδ15N of chloropigment is capable of providing rich information to greatly enhance our understanding of past nitrogen cycling,which therefore is urgently needed.Hereby,we present a successful method based on two-step HPLC separation followed by'denitrifier method'.The N-content in acetone and potassium persulfate(K_(2)S_(2)O_(8))are very critical to the precision and accuracy of the measurements,because they constitute the majority of the N contamination to the Chl-a samples.In this method,the recrystallized K_(2)S_(2)O_(8)that is used as oxidization reagent was discovered to have aδ15N background of-15‰,consolidated by repeated examinations over a period of two months.This 15N background of K_(2)S_(2)O_(8)would cause-1‰–-2‰deviation on theδ^(15)N of sample that contains nanomolar level N,and highlight the need to examine theδ^(15)N of recrystallized K_(2)S_(2)O_(8)when it is used to oxidize samples of organic nitrogen.The overall measurement ofδ^(15)N pigment is reliable and has an average analytical precision better than±0.5‰(1σ).This study establish a sensitive method for accurate measurement of theδ^(15)N of nano-molar level chlorophyll pigment,and with no doubts will advance its wide application in marine nitrogen cycling studying. 展开更多

Marine pollution and overfishing induced the biodiversity loss and ecological degradation of the Beibu Gulf ecosystem in Guangxi,SE China.In an effort to restore the ecosystem and fishery resources,artificial reefs were deployed in the Beibu Gulf as the marine ranching area and their ecological performance need to be investigated.We constructed Ecopath ecological trophic models for the marine ranching area and a nearby control area to compare their ecosystem throughput and food web structure difference,and to calculate the ecological carrying capacity of various functional groups.Results indicate that the total system throughput of the marine ranching area was significantly higher than the control area,and the majority of system throughput occurred at trophic levelsⅠandⅡin both ecosystems.The system connectance indices for the marine ranching and control areas were 0.27 and 0.32,and the omnivory indices were 0.16 and 0.19,indicating simple food web structures;both areas are in a developmental stage with TPP/TR ratios of 2.69 and 9.36,respectively.Compared to the control area,marine ranching area exhibited a higher system maturity,and the ecological carrying capacity of“large and medium-sized demersal fish”and“other bivalves”functional groups in the marine ranching area increased by 43.83%and 233.62%,respectively,allowing for more high-trophic-level predators and large benthic animals.This study provided a reference for the formulation of fishery management policies in the Beibu Gulf,to maintain ecosystem stability and biodiversity. 展开更多

Marine heatwaves(MHWs)in the South China Sea(SCS)significantly impact marine ecosystems and socioeconomic development,yet accurately forecasting MHWs remains a challenge.This study developed an upper-ocean temperature forecasting model based on ConvLSTM for the northern SCS and,in conjunction with the ocean forecasting system LICOM Forecast System(LFS),constructed a hybrid Fusion model using Wasserstein-Distance optimization.The ability of these three models to forecast key MHW metrics with a 10-day lead was assessed during the summer of 2022 in the SCS.Overall,the Fusion model takes advantage of LFS and ConvLSTM,providing superior forecasts for both the duration and intensity of MHWs in the southern SCS.LFS(ConvLSTM)overestimates(underestimates)the duration of MHWs and all models exhibit limitations in forecasting the intensity of MHWs in part of the SCS.The Fusion model's superior forecast skill for MHWs may be attributable to its more realistic representation of the upper-ocean thermal structure with shallower mixed-layer depths during MHWs.This study highlights that combining the deep learning technique with a dynamical model can improve MHW forecasting and has certain physical interpretability. 展开更多

Incineration has been widely adopted as a solution to the increasing volume of municipal solid waste(MSW).However,this process generates substantial amounts of incineration bottom ash(IBA),which poses environmental risks due to heavy metal content,especially in the fine fraction(FIBA).In this context,this study proposes producing liquefied stabilized soil(LSS)from FIBA,marine clay(MC),and ground granulated blast furnace slag(GGBS)for backfilling applications.FIBA serves as an alkaline activator for GGBS hydration,while MC functions as the primary soil matrix.GGBS acts as the primary binder.Carbide sludge(CS),another industrial byproduct,was used as a comparison to FIBA.The performance of the fresh and solidified LSS,including flow value,unconfined compressive strength(UCS),and leaching of heavy metals was investigated.The results showed that with proper contents of FIBA,water,and binder,the flow value of FIBA-GGBS-clay and CS-GGBS-clay satisfied the workability requirements.With increasing CS content,the UCS of CS-GGBS-clay initially increased sharply,then gradually reached an optimal value,and slightly decreased in some cases.Nevertheless,as FIBA content increased,the UCS of FIBA-GGBS-clay generally increased linearly.With similar Ca(OH)2 contents,FIBA-GGBS-clay had a higher strength than CS-GGBS-clay due to the soil skeleton effect of sand-sized particles in FIBA.The synergy of CS and FIBA enabled CS-FIBA-GGBS-clay to achieve high early strength while addressing the high heavy metal content issue of FIBA.Overall,this approach can be adapted to meet the varying strength and heavy metal requirements of LSS in different applications. 展开更多

Environmental sustainability assessment of remediation alternatives for highly contaminated marine sediments

This study compares the environmental sustainability of five alternatives for the remediation of marine sediments of one of the most polluted coastal sites in Europe(Bagnoli-Coroglio bay,Mediterranean Sea),using the Life Cycle Assessment(LCA)methodology.The treatments are either in-situ or exsitu,the latter requiring an initial dredging to transport the contaminated sediments to the management site.More in detail,four ex-situ remediation technologies based on landfilling,bioremediation,electrokinetic technique and soil washing were identified.These technologies are compared to an in-situ strategy currently under validation for enhancing bioremediation of the polluted sediments of the Bagnoli-Coroglio site.Our results indicate that the disposal in landfilling site is the worst option in most categories(e.g.,650 kg CO_(2) eq./t of treated sediment,considering the nearest landfilling site),followed by the bioremediation,mainly due to the high energy demand.Electrokinetic remediation,soil washing,and innovative in-situ technology represent the most sustainable options.In particular,the new in-situ technology appears to be the least impacting in all categories(e.g.,54 kg CO_(2) eq./t of treated sediment),although it is expected to require longer treatment time(estimated up to 12 months based on its potential efficiency).It can reduce the impact on climate change more than 12 times compared to the disposal and 7 times compared to bioremediation in addition to the possibility to avoid/reduce the dredging operations and the consequent dispersion of pollutants.The results open relevant perspectives towards more eco-sustainable and costly effective actions for the reclamation of contaminated marine sediments. 展开更多

Solar-driven interfacial desalination(SID)offers a sustainable route for freshwater production,yet its long-term performance is compromised by salt crystallization and microbial fouling under complex marine conditions.Zwitterionic polymers offer promising nonfouling capabilities,but current zwitterionic hydrogel-based solar evaporators(HSEs)suffer from inadequate hydration and salt vulnerability.Inspired by the natural marine environmental adaptive characteristics of saltwater fish,we report a superhydrated zwitterionic poly(trimethylamine N-oxide,PTMAO)/polyacrylamide(PAAm)/polypyrrole(PPy)hydrogel(PTAP)with dedicated water channels for efficient,durable,and nonfouling SID.The directly linked N⁺and O⁻groups in PTMAO establish a robust hydration shell that facilitates rapid water transport while resisting salt and microbial adhesion.Integrated PAAm and PPy networks enhance mechanical strength and photothermal conversion.PTAP achieves a high evaporation rate of 2.35 kg m^(−2)h^(−1)under 1 kW m^(–2)in 10 wt%NaCl solution,maintaining stable operation over 100 h without salt accumulation.Furthermore,PTAP effectively resists various foulants including proteins,bacterial,and algal adhesion.Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the exceptional hydration capacity supports its nonfouling properties.This work advances the development of nonfouling HSEs for sustainable solar desalination in real-world marine environments. 展开更多

Classification of marine heatwaves in the South China Sea and their thermodynamic features

The frequency of marine heatwaves(MHWs)in the South China Sea(SCS)has increased recently.However,the relative roles of thermal and dynamic processes regulating the changes of sCs MHWs remain an open question.This study examines all long-lived MHWs(>10 days)in the SCS from 1982 to 2021,categorizing them into intensified and attenuated MHWs based on the overall trend of sea surface temperature during an MHW event.A mixed-layer heat budget analysis reveals that the thermal processes primarily driven by the latent heat flux are crucial in modulating the SCS MHWs,particularly for attenuated MHWs.However,under intensified conditions,the proportions of dynamically dominated MHWs(40%)is approximately comparable to that of thermally dominated ones(47%).This study highlights the significance of dynamic processes in shaping SCS MHWs and discusses the potential impacts induced by tropical cyclones on these MHWs. 展开更多

Marine thin plates are susceptible to welding deformation owing to their low structural stiffness.Therefore,the efficient and accurate prediction of welding deformation is essential for improving welding quality.The traditional thermal elastic-plastic finite element method(TEP-FEM)can accurately predict welding deformation.However,its efficiency is low because of the complex nonlinear transient computation,making it difficult to meet the needs of rapid engineering evaluation.To address this challenge,this study proposes an efficient prediction method for welding deformation in marine thin plate butt welds.This method is based on the coupled temperature gradient-thermal strain method(TG-TSM)that integrates inherent strain theory with a shell element finite element model.The proposed method first extracts the distribution pattern and characteristic value of welding-induced inherent strain through TEP-FEM analysis.This strain is then converted into the equivalent thermal load applied to the shell element model for rapid computation.The proposed method-particularly,the gradual temperature gradient-thermal strain method(GTG-TSM)-achieved improved computational efficiency and consistent precision.Furthermore,the proposed method required much less computation time than the traditional TEP-FEM.Thus,this study lays the foundation for future prediction of welding deformation in more complex marine thin plates. 展开更多

Pre-chamber ignition technology can address the issue of uneven in-cylinder mixture combustion in large-bore marine engines.The impact of various pre-chamber structures on the formation of the mixture and jet flames within the pre-chamber is explored.This study performed numerical simulations on a large-bore marine ammonia/hydrogen pre-chamber engine prototype,considering pre-chamber volume,throat diameter,the distance between the hydrogen injector and the spark plug,and the hydrogen injector angle.Compared with the original engine,when the pre-chamber volume is 73.4 ml,the throat diameter is 14 mm,the distance ratio is 0.92,and the hydrogen injector angle is 80°.Moreover,the peak pressure in the pre-chamber increased by 23.1%,and that in the main chamber increased by 46.3%.The results indicate that the performance of the original engine is greatly enhanced by altering its fuel and pre-chamber structure. 展开更多

The Hai Phong-Ha Long coastal area,with its World Natural Heritage site of Ha Long Bay-Cat Ba islands,has been under intense pressure from rapid development to meet the socio-economic goals set by Hai Phong City and Quang Ninh Province.As such,urgent land needs for infrastructure construction of economic sectors and urbanization have led to intensive coastal reclamation and seafill leveling,and their environmental consequences.The objective of this study is to assess the adverse environmental effects of coastal reclamation in the Hai Phong—Ha Long area,focusing on ecosystems,environmental quality,and seabed morphology at a regional scale.To achieve this objective,the study employed the regular techniques of environmental assessment methods,such as checklists,matrices,network diagrams,and overlay maps,to appraise these environmental consequences.The results show three main impacted natural components,including coastal ecosystems,environmental qualities,and morphological seabeds,besides coastline changes and socio-economic issues.The most impacted component was coastal ecosystems,followed by the coastal environmental qualities of seawater and sediments,and then the morphological seabed.Based on the study results,it is recommended that during the development of an integrated coastal management plan for the coastal area of Hai Phong–Ha Long,environmental issues of coastal reclamation and seafill leveling must be given much attention. 展开更多

Ocean-degradable polyesters incorporating hydrophilic and rapidly degradable glycolide(GL)units into the polymer chain are the most promising for addressing marine plastic pollution,however,it is challenging to obtain high-molecular-weight copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions.Herein,we prepared a novel biodegradable material,poly(butylene succinate-co-glycolide)(PBSGL),through ring-opening copolymerization using glycolide,succinic anhydride,and 1,4-butanediol as raw materials,providing a new solution strategy for marine pollution.GL could be polymerized according to the pre-designed composition by 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance(1H-NMR)and gel permeation chromatography(GPC)results,indicating controlled polymerization with the synthesized PBSGLs having a weight-average molecular weight of up to 12.30×10^(4) g/mol and a narrow molecular weight distribution(1.33–1.65).Differential scanning calorimeter(DSC)and thermogravimetric analysis(TGA)results showed that T_(g) of PBSGLs increased from−32.5°C to−26.5°C with the increase of GL content from 0%to 40%,while T_(m)(>76°C)was much lower than T_(d,5%)(>314°C),which indicated that PBSGLs had good thermal stability and expanded the processing window and application range of the original poly(butylene succinate)(PBS)materials.Under simulated difficult conditions,PBSGL copolyesters could degrade faster with increasing GL content,where PBSGL40 degraded by 22.6%in 12 days,showing good biodegradability.Currently,most biodegradable polyesters with good performance slowly degrade in seawater.In a 30-day artificial seawater degradation test,the amorphous PBSGL40 copolyester showed a about 15-fold(2.33%weight loss)improvement in degradation ability compared to pure PBS,demonstrating rapid seawater degradation capability. 展开更多

This study proposes to use the unconfined compressive strength(UCS)and the bender element(BE)tests for determining the strength and the initial small-strain shear modulus of Bangkok soft marine clay improved by cement and polyester fibers.This study varies the content of admixed cement(1%–20%)and polyester fibers(0–20%),including the curing time(3–28 d)for preparing 360 samples.Moreover,this study uses the Michaelis-Menten kinetics concept to model cement hydration saturation.From the study,it is concluded as follows.The modelled results reveals that at least 10%cement and 1%polyester fiber are recommended to attain the 28-d UCS standards(294 kPa)for highway subgrade materials in Thailand.This also fulfils sustainable construction due to reducing normal-use cement from 20%to 10%.Unfortunately,the addition of polyester fibers into the Bangkok clay with at least 5%cement reduces shear modulus by 1.12–1.32 times.The Abram's relationship between shear modulus and the mixing-water-to-cement ratio is found time-dependent.From the composite theory,the BE detects the polyester fiber zone as a defect in the Bangkok clay(matrix)with 5%–20%cement.So,the 28-d shear modulus in the polyester fiber zone is negative(up to0.034 MPa for 20%fiber),similar to softening phenomenon in concrete cracking(negative stiffness).For the 28-d shear modulus of fiber zone,the optimum cement content is around 2%for the positive influences of polyester fibers.Experimentally,the timedependent normalized UCS for 10%and 20%cement is compatible with other studies,and its development rate increases with the cement content as 0.3017,0.3172 and 0.3204 for 5%,10%and 20%cement,respectively.The 28-d relationship between shear modulus and UCS shows that low-cement soft clay requires high polyester fiber content(5%–20%)to activate UCS improvement.However,the soft clay with enough cement(20%)causes the uniformly distributed UCS improvement. 展开更多

A novel salt-tolerant aerobic denitrifying bacterium,Marinobacter sp.strain B108,was isolated from a marine recirculating aquaculture system(MRAS).The optimal aerobic denitrification parameters were CH_(3)COONa as carbon source,pH of 8,C/N of16,temperature of 35°C,dissolved oxygen(DO)of 6 mg/L and salinity of 30.Under these optimal conditions,Marinobacter sp.strain B108 had a removal efficiency of 100%for N O_(3)^(-)-N and 98.89%for total nitrogen(TN)within 24 h.The nitrate removal pathways of Marinobacter sp.strain B108 were included by the assimilative reduction pathway(N O_(3)^(-)-N→biomass N)and the dissimilatory reduction pathway(N O_(3)^(-)-N→N_(2))of aerobic denitrification,and lack of dissimilatory reduction to ammonium pathway(N O_(3)^(-)-N→N H_(4)^(+)-N).The nitrogen removal process of Marinobacter sp.strain B108 was mainly contributed by the dissimilatory reduction pathway.The kinetic parameters for N O_(3)^(-)-N and N O_(2)^(-)-N removal were determined as V_(m)of 971.566 and 165.336 mg/(gDCW·L·h),and K_(m)of 22.74 and 31.68 mg/L,respectively.This work reflects the practical application potential of Marinobacter sp.strain B108for nitrogen removal in MRAS. 展开更多
