As a kind of widely circulated folk language,two-part allegorical saying(“xiehouyu”)carries the wisdom of the Chinese people and is characterized with humor and vivid imagery.Taking the two English translation versions of A Dream of Red Mansions as examples, this paper analyzes the English translation of two-part allegorical saying based on the core principle of Embodied Cognitive Linguistics(ECL),“Reality-Cognition-Language”,and explores how the English translation of two-part allegorical saying reflects the three dimensions of ECL. 展开更多

The integration of cross-cultural inquiries into the realm of translation has given rise to a distinct subfield known as cross-cultural translation studies. This approach emphasizes the importance of delving into the cultural subtleties and the awareness of cultural subjectivity within the translation process.Central to this framework is the concept of reshaping cultural nuances and the subjectivity of culture. This paper introduces three principal translation strategies that emerge from a cross-cultural standpoint:the alienation translation strategy, the‘cannibalism’translation strategy, and the destructive translation strategy.Utilizing the English translation of“Dream of the Red Chamber”as a case study, the paper examines how cultural nuances and cultural subjectivity influence the selection of translation strategies and demonstrates the practical application of cross-cultural research within the translation sphere.Hence, the significance of cross-cultural translation studies lies in its capacity to offer a novel lens through which to view translation studies. It encourages a reevaluation of cultural nuances and subjectivity in translation, which is of profound practical importance for advancing the field of translation studies, enhancing cross-cultural communication, and facilitating the spread of Chinese discourse on the global stage. 展开更多

"All the articles in black are ridiculous, while in fact, they are full of sorrowful tears.Everyone views the author as a fool, while no one could find his woe."(Cao Xueqin,1994:1) That is written in the beginning of "A Dream of Red Mansions".As is known to us,this work has rooted its popularity in the hearts of world readers.however, once upon time, few people noticed its influence on another book, which is the masterpiece of LinYutang(a famous Chinese writer who creates his works mostly in English)--"Moment in Peking".Nowadays,"Moment in Peking" was becoming more and more conspicuous;because of its considerably connection with "A Dream of Red Mansions".It is an English novel written by LinYutang between the year 1938 and 1939 when he resided in Paris, and was regarded by the"Times" as the most classic work, which might become "the one reflecting the reality of the society at that time in China".Along with people's focus on "A Dream of Red Mansions",its place has been promoted, too. This paper aims at analyzing the similarities and differences between these two famous works. 展开更多

Emotional metaphors abound in the original works and translations of A Dream of Red Mansions. Based on statistical analysis,a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods are utilized from the perspective of cognitive linguistics to study the emotional metaphors appearing in the first 50 chapters of the novel and their corresponding English translations by Hawkes and the Yang couple. To generalize rules in the translation of emotional metaphors, the emotional metaphor of “Qi” is taken as an example by calculating the ratios of each kind of emotional metaphors and the frequencies of translation methods adopted. The findings suggest that when translating emotional metaphors, translators have selected their strategies from cognitive perspectives to achieve equivalence between the source language and the target language despite some challenges and restrictions. It is thus concluded that the emotional metaphor in the novel cannot be translated directly but can be approached through selection of appropriate translation methods including meaning transfer, meaning deviation and metaphor omission. 展开更多

In recent years, with the rapid development of the tourist industry, world heritage sites become more and more popular among tourists from home and abroad. Therefore, heritage tourism has become a new hotspot. However, while world heri- tage sites are making obvious economic benefit from tourism, they also bring various problems and contradictions, of which the most troublesome one is the contradiction between heritage con- servation and tourism development. To discuss and analyze the root and the essence of the above contradiction and find a way to bring about harmony between them is an important program faced by our national heritage management practice and academic re- search. Based on the case of cleaning the Temple and Cemetery of Confucius and the Kong Family Mansion in Qufu, this paper ana- lyzes the reasons why our national world cultural heritage sites bring about the above contradiction in the process of tourism development and points out that the improper system and stake- holders’ benefit imbroglio are respectively the root and the es- sence of the contraction. Then, it also puts forward corresponding solutions. 展开更多

Both the study of metaphor and translation has taken an empirical turn in the past decade,corpus-based method has provided a practical and objective way for investigating metaphor translation from a comparative and cognitive perspective. The purpose of this paper is to reveal the cognitive differences in the perception of“root”between English and Chinese through a contrastive analysis of the two English translations of a Chinese classic novel—Dream of the Red Mansion, the two translations are completed by a native Chinese speaker and a native English speaker respectively. The study is divided into two parts, the first part is devoted to a contrastive analysis of typical examples selected from the data acquired from the online English-Chinese parallel corpus with the online corpus analysis tool Wmatrix, two deductions have been drawn through the analysis concerning the cognition difference in root perception:(1)the integral perception of root and a plant in Chinese VS the binary cognition in English;(2)the concreteness of“root”metaphor in Chinese VS the abstractness in“root”metaphor application in English. Then the two deductions are further demonstrated through corpus-assisted study of“root”metaphor in large online corpuses. The differences in root metaphor usage as well as the cognitive reasons behind the differences have been investigated with emphasis not only on the dominant conceptual root metaphors, but also the semantic preference of the collocated words of the metaphors. 展开更多
