Carbonated soft drink for gastric preparation for magnetically controlled capsule endoscopy:An open-label randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND The clinical effectiveness of magnetically controlled capsule endoscopy(MCE)is well established.However,problems,such as abdominal distension,insufficient gastric filling,and prolonged gastric retention time,persist with MCE gastric preparations.AIM To compare gastric filling using a carbonated soft drink with that using pure water during MCE.METHODS We performed an open-label randomised controlled trial at the Endoscopy Centre of Changhai Hospital in Shanghai.Patients aged 18-80 years,with or without gastrointestinal symptoms,scheduled for MCE were consecutively recruited.Those who provided informed consent were randomly assigned to the carbonated soft drink group(C group)or water group(W group)in a 1:1 ratio.For patients in the W group,1000 mL of water was ingested to distend the stomach,whereas for patients in the C group,550 mL of carbonated soft drink was provided,and patients were required to drink quickly while minimising burping.The primary endpoint was the number of patients with a gastric filling score of≥4 within 5 minutes after the capsule entered the stomach.RESULTS From December 3,2020 to May 17,2021,252 patients(141 men),aged 18-77 years,were assigned to the C(n=126)and W(n=126)groups.For the primary outcome,123 patients in the C group achieved a gastric filling score of≥4(97.62%vs 80.16%,P<0.0001).More patients in the C group had the highest gastric filling scores within the first 5 min(78.57%vs 29.37%,P<0.0001)and 10 minutes(54.76%vs 13.49%,P<0.0001)after the capsule entered the stomach.More patients in the W group required extra liquid for gastric refilling(1.59%vs 16.67%,P<0.0001).Transpyloric passage of the capsule under magnetic control was successfully performed in 43 patients in the C group(P<0.0001),accompanied by a shorter gastric transit time(53.27±53.83 minutes vs 71.12±52.19 minutes,P=0.001).CONCLUSION Carbonated soft drinks demonstrated superior and more sustained gastric filling compared with those of water alone,with the potential to promote gastric emptying. 展开更多

This paper proposes an attitude control strategy for a flexible satellite equipped with an orthogonal cluster of three-dimensional(3D)magnetically suspended wheels(MSWs).The mathematical model for the satellite incorporating flexible appendages and an orthogonal cluster of magnetically suspended reaction wheel actuators is initially developed.After that,an adaptive attitude controller is designed with a switching surface of variable structure,an adaptive law for estimating inertia matrix uncertainty,and a fuzzy disturbance observer for estimating disturbance torques.Additionally,a Moore-Penrose-based steering law is proposed to derive the tilt angle commands of the orthogonal configuration of the 3D MSW to follow the designed control signal.Finally,numerical simulations are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy. 展开更多

The introduction of wireless capsule endoscopy has brought a revolutionary change in the diagnostic procedures for gastrointestinal disorders.Biopsy,an essential procedure for disease diagnosis,has been integrated into robotic capsule endoscopy to augment diagnostic capabilities.In this study,we propose a magnetically driven biopsy robot based on a Kresling origami.Considering the bistable properties of Krelsing origami and the elasticity of the creases,a foldable structure of the robot with constant force characteristics is designed.The folding motion of the structure is used to deploy the needle into the target tissue.The robot is capable of performing rolling motion under the control of an external magnetic drive system,and a fine needle biopsy technique is used to collect deep tissue samples.We also conduct in vitro rolling experiments and sampling experiments on apple tissues and pork tissues,which verify the performance of the robot. 展开更多

After the fabrication of magnetic resonance superconducting magnets,the magnetic field inhomogeneity needs to be accurately measured for subsequent shimming.However,conventional measurement methods are susceptible to magnetic fields,have poor compatibility,and are difficult to adapt to various types of magnets.This paper proposes a new field measuring system based on a three-axis movable platform.The system utilizes non-magnetic materials and an innovative hand-wheel lifting design that can be adapted to various aperture magnets,thus obviating the necessity for electrically driven equipment and addressing safety concerns in strong magnetic fields.In addition,the measurement system offers high accuracy up to 1 mm and a wide measurable range.The fields of 3 T and 7 T magnets were mapped using the designed system with diameter of spherical volume(DSV)of 160 mm and 130 mm,respectively.Experimental results demonstrate that the magnetic field measurement system has strong compatibility and can accurately map the magnetic field at arbitrary positions,which is critical for shimming studies. 展开更多

Magnetic integration technology can reduce the printed circuit board(PCB) size of inductor-inductor-capacitor(LLC) converters. However, conventional methods for adjusting leakage inductance by modifying the transformer's air gap exhibit low sensitivity and limited output power capability. This paper proposes a novel magnetically integrated transformer structure that employs nanocrystalline soft magnetic composite(SMC) lamination to separate primary and secondary cores. Using SMC for the leakage core allows for more precise control of the magnetic flux division, enabling accurate leakage inductance tuning. Furthermore, this design achieves a higher magnetizing inductance per turn. Experimental results show that the proposed GU30 magnetically integrated transformer handles a primary input active power of 206.9 W, outperforming conventional designs while maintaining a full-load efficiency above 95%. This technology has the potential to further enhance the power density of power conversion products. 展开更多

Radiative cooling is an environmentally friendly,passive cooling technology that operates without energy consumption.Current research primarily focuses on optimizing the optical properties of radiative cooling films to enhance their cooling performance.In practical applications,thermal contact between the radiative cooling film and the object significantly influences the ultimate cooling performance.However,achieving optimal thermal contact has received limited attention.In this study,we propose and experimentally demonstrate a high-power,flexible,and magnetically attachable and detachable radiative cooling film.This film consists of polymer metasurface structures on a flexible magnetic layer.The monolithic design allows for convenient attachment to and detachment from steel or iron surfaces,ensuring optimal thermal contact with minimal thermal resistance and uniform temperature distribution.Our magnetic radiative cooling film exhibits superior cooling performance compared to non-magnetic alternatives.It can reduce the temperature of stainless-steel plates under sunlight by 15.2℃,which is 3.6℃ more than that achieved by non-magnetic radiative cooling films.The radiative cooling power can reach 259W·m^(-2) at a working temperature of 70℃.Unlike other commonly used attachment methods,such as thermal grease or one-off tape,our approach allows for detachment and reusability of the cooling film according to practical needs.This method offers great simplicity,flexibility,and cost-effectiveness,making it promising for broad applications,particularly on non-horizontal irregular surfaces previously considered challenging. 展开更多

Magnetically responsive microstructured functional surface(MRMFS),capable of dynamically and reversibly switching the surface topography under magnetic actuation,provides a wireless,noninvasive,and instantaneous way to accurately control the microscale engineered surface.In the last decade,many studies have been conducted to design and optimize MRMFSs for diverse applications,and significant progress has been accomplished.This review comprehensively presents recent advancements and the potential prospects in MRMFSs.We first classify MRMFSs into one-dimensional linear array MRMFSs,two-dimensional planar array MRMFSs,and dynamic self-assembly MRMFSs based on their morphology.Subsequently,an overview of three deformation mechanisms,including magnetically actuated bending deformation,magnetically driven rotational deformation,and magnetically induced self-assembly deformation,are provided.Four main fabrication strategies employed to create MRMFSs are summarized,including replica molding,magnetization-induced self-assembly,laser cutting,and ferrofluid-infused method.Furthermore,the applications of MRMFS in droplet manipulation,solid transport,information encryption,light manipulation,triboelectric nanogenerators,and soft robotics are presented.Finally,the challenges that limit the practical applications of MRMFSs are discussed,and the future development of MRMFSs is proposed. 展开更多

To determine and calculate the stable fluidization zone in a magnetically fluidized bed, the fluidization characteristics of magnetic particles are investigated. Four kinds of magnetic particles with different average diameters, ranging from 231 to 512 μm, are fluidized in the presence of magnetic fields with specified values of the intensity in the range of zero to 7330 A/m, and the particle fluidization curves are plotted. For marking the stable fluidization zone in the curves, the minimum bubbling velocities of particles are measured by the pressure-drop fluctuation. Based on the fluidization curves, the influences of the average particle diameter and magnetic field intensity on the zone are analyzed and discussed. A correlation to determine the stable fluidization zone is derived from the experimental data, using three dimensionless numbers, i. e., the ratio of magnetic potential to gravity potential, the Reynolds number and the Archimedes number. Compared with available data reported, it is shown that the correlation is more simplified to predict relative parameters for the bed operating in the state of stable fluidization under reasonable conditions. 展开更多

Capsule Robots(CRs)with active locomotion improve on the inefficiency of passive locomotion in capsule endoscopes,showing great potential for clinical use.However,despite the development of various CR types,efficient locomotion and functional integration remain challenges due to space limitations and increasing demands.Additionally,many CRs are overly complex,so simplifying their structure while maintaining functionality is essential.This paper presents a novel magnetically actuated CR with two internal permanent magnets for oscillating locomotion and anchoring,along with a Shape Memory Alloy(SMA)-driven actuator for biopsy sampling.Compared to existing CRs,this design simplifies the structure while ensuring biopsy functionality and leaving space for a micro-CCD.The robot’s dynamics are modeled to guide its structural design and locomotion strategy.SMA characteristics are also examined to optimize the biopsy module’s parameters,improving efficiency and success rates.The CR undergoes experiments to assess safety,locomotion performance,and functionality,with results showing stable steering,and advantages in driving height,speed,and accuracy.Finally,the CR’s biopsy capabilities are validated in a gastric model and ex vivo stomach.This work offers a novel solution for gastrointestinal disease diagnosis and treatment,enhancing the application of CRs in biomedical engineering. 展开更多

The results show that the characteristics of induced strain with respect to the magnetic field are nonlinear with saturation nature, and dependent on the temperature as well as the load applied to the MSMA. The magnetic shape memory effect can be observed only in complete martensite phase at room temperature. The magnetic permeability of MSMA is not constant and reduces with the increment of magnetic field. The relative saturation magnetic permeability of MSMA is about 1.5. 展开更多

A magnetically separable photocatalyst TiO2/SiO2/NiFe2O4 (TSN) with a typical ferromagnetic hysteresis was prepared by a liquid catalytic phase transfer method. When the intensity of applied magnetic field weakened to zero, the remnant magnetism of the prepared photocatalyst faded to zero. The photocatalytst can be separated from water when an external magnetic field is added and redispersed into aqueous solution after the external magnetic field is eliminated, that makes the photocatalysts promising for wastewater treatment. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD) were used to characterize the structure of the photocatalyst indicating that the magnetic SiOffNiFe204 (SN) particle was compactly enveloped by P-25 titania and Tit2 shell was formed. The magnetic composite showed high photocatalytic activity for the degradation of methyl orange in water. A thin SiO2 layer between NiFe2O4 and TiO2 shell prevented effectively the leakage of charges from TiO2 particles to NiFe2O4, which gave rise to the increase in photocatalytic activity. Moreover, the experiment on recycled use of TSN demonstrated a good repeatability of the photocatalytic activity. 展开更多

AIM To design a miniature magnetically anchored and controlled camera system to reduce the number of trocars which are required for laparoscopy.METHODS The system consists of a miniature magnetically anchored camera with a 30° downward angle, an external magnetically anchored unit, and a vision output device. The camera weighs 12 g, measures Φ10.5 mm × 55 mm and has two magnets, a vision model, a light source, and a metal hexagonal nut. To test the prototype, the camera was inserted through a 12-mm conventional trocar in an ex vivo real liver laparoscopic training system. A trocar-less laparoscopic cholecystectomy was performed 6 times using a 12-mm and a 5-mm conventional trocar. In addition, the same procedure was performed in four canine models.RESULTS Both procedures were successfully performed using only two conventional laparoscopic trocars. The cholecystectomy was completed without any major complication in 42 min(38-45 min) in vitro and in 50 min(45-53 min) using an animal model. This camera was anchored and controlled by an external unit magnetically anchored on the abdominal wall. The camera could generate excellent image. with no instrument collisions.CONCLUSION The camera system we designed provides excellent optics and can be easily maneuvered. An arc channel tends to shrink due to its conductivity increasing with the increase of temperature. In this study, to generate large area arc plasma, we construct a magnetically rotating arc plasma generator, which mainly consists of a lanthanide tungsten cathode (13 mm in diameter), a concentric cylindrical graphite anode chamber (60 nun in diameter) and a solenoid coil for producing an axial magnet field. By controlling the cold gas flow, the magnetically rotating arc evolves from constricted mode to diffuse mode, which almost fills the whole arc chamber cross section. Results show that the diffuse arc plasma has better uniformity and stability. The formation mechanism of large area arc plasma is discussed in this paper. 展开更多

Axial liquid dispersion was experimentally studied in liquid-solid and gas-liquid-solid magnetically stabilized beds using the ferromagnetic catalyst of SRNA-4 as the solid phase. The effects of operating factors and fluid characters, such as superficial liquid velocity, superficial gas velocity, magnetic field intensity, liquid viscosity and surface tension, on axial dispersion coefficients of liquid were investigated. The dispersion coefficients increased with the increase of superficial liquid velocity and superficial gas velocity, and decreased with the increase of liquid viscosity, liquid surface tension and magnetic field intensity. A correlation equation of Peclet number was obtained for both liquid-solid and gas-liquid-solid magnetically stabilized bed. 展开更多

An X-band magnetically insulated transmission line oscillator (MILO) is designed and investigated numerically and experimentally for the first time. The X-band MILO is optimized in detail with KARAT code. In simulation, the X-band MILO, driven by a 720 kV, 53 kA electron beam, comes to a nonlinear steady state in 4.0 ns. High-power microwaves (HPM) of TEM mode is generated with an average power of 4.1 GW, a frequency of 9.3 GHz, and power conversion efficiency of 10.870 in durations of 0-40 ns. The device is fabricated according to the simulation results. In experiments, when the voltage is 400 kV and the current is 50 kA, the radiated microwave power reaches about 110 MW and the dominating frequency is 9.7GHz. Because the surfaces of the cathode end and the beam dump are destroyed, the diode voltage cannot increase continuously. However, when the diode voltage is 400 kV, the average power output is obtained to be 700 MW in simulation. The impedance of the device is clearly smaller than the simulation prediction. Moreover, the duration of the microwave pulse is obviously shorter than that of the current pulse. The experimental results are greatly different from the simulation predictions. The preliminary analyses show that the generations of the anode plasma, the cathode flare and the anode flare are the essential cause for the remarkable deviation of the experimental results from the simulation predictions. 展开更多

FeSiAl magnetically soft alloy hollow microspheres(MSAHMs) were prepared by self-reactive quenching technology based on Fe + Si + AI + KNO_3 reactive systems, in order to obtain absorbents with light weight, low frequency and high efficiency. Firstly, twice-balling adhesive precursor method was used to obtain FeSiAl magnetically soft alloy agglomerate powders. Then agglomerate powders with the mesh number of 150-240, 240-325 and 325-400 were sprayed through the flame field into the quenching water. At last, FeSiAl MSAHMs with coarse(average at 86.97 μm), medium(average at 52.16 μm) and fine particles(average at 31.80 μm) were got. Effect of particle size on the phases and microwave absorption properties in low frequency band was studied by XRD and vector network analyzer. The results show that,Fe_3 Si_(0.7)Al_(0.3) and Fe_3 Si_(0.5)Al_(0.5) appear in the phase components of FeSiAl MSAHMs,which is important to improve the microwave absorption properties in low frequency. In addition, the real part(ε′) and imaginary part(ε″) of complex permittivity, the real part(μ′) and imaginary part(μ″) of complex permeability of FeSiAl MSAHMs all present the trend of fine particles > medium particles > coarse particles. The microwave absorption properties in low frequency are improved with the increasing of particle size, and the absorption peak moves to lower frequency range. The properties of fine particles are the best. Their matching thickness of samples is at 5 mm, and the minimum reflectivity is-43 dB at this thickness. The absorption frequency band lower than-10 dB is 4.6-7.6 GHz with a bandwidth of 3 GHz. 展开更多

However, current loss is unavoidable, especially when the current density is up to 1 MA/cm. In the paper, the current loss of an MITL made of stainless steel, which is usually used in large pulse power generators, is experimentally studied, and possible mechanisms to explain the current loss of the MITL are analyzed and discussed. From the experimental results, the relationship between loss current density and input current density follows approximately a power law.
