MiguelÁngel Asturias’work titled Men of Maize stands as a significant masterpiece within the realm of Latin American magical realism literature.It unfolds and discloses the profound and abiding antagonism that e...MiguelÁngel Asturias’work titled Men of Maize stands as a significant masterpiece within the realm of Latin American magical realism literature.It unfolds and discloses the profound and abiding antagonism that exists between Indian culture and modern capitalism by means of a prose narrative that is rendered in a poeticized fashion,replete with rich mythological symbols as well as complex social conflicts that are intricately interwoven.This paper undertakes an analysis across four distinct aspects,namely the backdrop or setting against which the work was created,the very definition along with the characteristic features that are emblematic of magical realism,the context or background within which it came into being and subsequently developed,and the specific and tangible manifestations of the magical realist writing techniques as they are exemplified in Men of Maize.The study that has been conducted reveals that Men of Maize manages to demonstrate the historical fissure or divide and the cultural antagonism that pervades Latin American society through the employment of techniques such as the clash of cultures,a non-traditional narrative structure that breaks away from the norm,and the symbolism associated with deities.Moreover,it simultaneously engages in a profound and incisive reflection upon the marginalization of traditional culture during the course of the modernization process.The creative output of Asturias is not solely a critique leveled at the social reality of Latin America;rather,it also represents an exploration of the common issues and challenges that are faced by mankind at large,thereby laying down an important and substantial foundation for the further development of magical realism literature.展开更多

This article aims to make a brief presentation on the elements of material culture in the ancient Palestinian region,mainly coins,which were removed from their production context and placed in funerary contexts(coins ...This article aims to make a brief presentation on the elements of material culture in the ancient Palestinian region,mainly coins,which were removed from their production context and placed in funerary contexts(coins were often buried in graves),thus converted in amulets,acquiring magical and apotropaic senses.We will use examples verified in different parts of the Roman Empire,as in Pithekússai(modest island,which is in the Italian Peninsula),on the banks of the Thames,in Celtic contexts,more specifically in the current city of Lezoux,France,in the ancient city of Aquincum,present day Budapest,also in Tel Maresha and Tiberias,present-day Israel,to demonstrate how these practices were recurrent throughout the Empire.It is also our intention to observe iconographic elements that bring apotropaic content in their formulations,because,in addition to the role that coins could play in connecting the worlds of men and gods,many people believed that they had the power to project magical and apotropaic strength through images powerful that they portrayed.展开更多

Hyperpolarization of nuclear spins is crucial for advancing nuclear magnetic resonance and quantum information technologies,as nuclear spins typically exhibit extremely low polarization at room temperature due to thei...Hyperpolarization of nuclear spins is crucial for advancing nuclear magnetic resonance and quantum information technologies,as nuclear spins typically exhibit extremely low polarization at room temperature due to their small gyromagnetic ratios.A promising approach to achieving high nuclear spin polarization is transferring the polarization of electrons to nuclear spins.The nitrogen-vacancy(NV)center in diamond has emerged as a highly effective medium for this purpose,and various hyperpolarization protocols have been developed.Among these,the pulsed polarization(PulsePol)method has been extensively studied due to its robustness against static energy shifts of the electron spin.In this work,we present a novel polarization protocol and uncover a family of magic sequences for hyperpolarizing nuclear spins,with PulsePol emerging as a special case of our general approach.Notably,we demonstrate that some of these magic sequences exhibit significantly greater robustness compared to the PulsePol protocol in the presence of finite half𝜋pulse duration of the protocol,Rabi and detuning errors.This enhanced robustness positions our protocol as a more suitable candidate for hyper-polarizing nuclear spins species with large gyromagnetic ratios and also ensures better compatibility with high-efficiency readout techniques at high magnetic fields.Additionally,the generality of our protocol allows for its direct application to other solid-state quantum systems beyond the NV center.展开更多

Whilst the theoretical study of magical realist literature is broad and wide-ranging,there is a remarkable lack of consensus among critics on how the mode should be defined,how its techniques should be described,and h...Whilst the theoretical study of magical realist literature is broad and wide-ranging,there is a remarkable lack of consensus among critics on how the mode should be defined,how its techniques should be described,and how it corresponds with both the contexts of its production and its contemporary neighboring genres.This essay maps some of the dominant avenues that have been explored in the field,illuminating where the disagreements lie and highlighting the sheer profusion of critical approaches that have been competing for attention since magical realism first began to receive academic attention with the publication of Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude in 1967,which have inevitably contributed to the confusion about how works of magical realism should be identified and interpreted.Ultimately,it is my contention that the study of magical realism is limited by the critical convention that considers the mode to have begun in Latin America in the 1950s,and often treats García Márquez as its originator:texts emerging from outside of this context are excluded from critical discussion,even where they comply with all formal definitions of the mode.My essay interrogates this convention,which I view as producing an untenable internal contradiction that I identify as a key contributing factor in the so-called“problem of definition”with which the field has long been plagued,and proposes that historical or geographical particulars cannot feature in a working definition of magical realism.展开更多

This paper explores the complexities of bringing the imaginative extremes of magical realism to the physical realm of the stage.Magical realism famously challenges the reader by demanding not just a suspension of beli...This paper explores the complexities of bringing the imaginative extremes of magical realism to the physical realm of the stage.Magical realism famously challenges the reader by demanding not just a suspension of belief but also a suspension of disbelief—it demands that we suspend our beliefs in the physical reality of our existence and move into a realm where we are required to accept the excesses of the imagination beyond what is usually considered to be fiction’s limits.Moreover,it requires the willingness on the part of the reader to take up the challenge of accepting what would be impossible in the physical world while demanding that these elements are understood in relation to a reality that appears convincing and possibly even familiar.In recent years in English-speaking theatre,productions such as Angels in America,Marisol,Midnight’s Children,Jerusalem,and Life of Pi,innovate theatrical convention with light and digital projections,sound,symbolic set-design,and puppetry while maintaining a necessary foot in realism through the placement of familiar objects,locations,costumes,and language register.This paper will consider the effectiveness of these techniques and the comparative success of adaptations of novels for the stage,in contrast to magical realist plays written for the stage.The resulting exploration considers the potential for further development of the genre of magical realism in recent forms of magical realism of World Theatre in Asia and Latin America.展开更多
