Lime mortars have a rich history of being blended with organic additives to address weaknesses such as low setting time and hydric properties. This study specifically investigates the impact of incorporating straw and sesame oil into lime mortar mixes, focusing on their influence on open porosity, permeability, water absorption, and durability. While previous studies explored the effects of natural fibers and fatty acid additives on lime mortars separately, this study examines their simultaneous incorporation in mortars. The results demonstrated that the simultaneous addition of sesame oil and straw decreased the water absorption values of the mortars to 77%.Furthermore,the inclusion of sesame oil resulted in a significant 30%increase in impermeability values. However, when both sesame oil and straw were added together, the increase in impermeability was less than 20%compared to the reference mortar with no additives. These findings highlights that the combined addition of sesame oil and straw has a lesser impact on the permeability values of mortars, which is a positive outcome,as maintaining optimal permeability is essential for the long-term preservation of historical substrates. The combination of straw and sesame oil enhances hydric properties without undermining the mortar’s structure and permeability. These results emphasize the sustainable nature of lime mortars in restoration projects, showcasing their compatibility with traditional masonry practices.By combining natural fibers with fatty acids, mortars demonstrate improved durability, offering a promising avenue for enhancing performance while retaining essential properties. 展开更多

The electrochemical corrosion of ductile pipes(DPs)in drinking water distribution systems(DWDS)has a crucial impact on cement-mortar lining(CML)failure and metal release, potentially leading to drinking water quality deterioration and posing a risk to public health. An in-situ scanning vibrating electrode technique(SVET)with micron-scale resolution, microscopic scale detection and water quality analysis were used to investigate the corrosion behavior and metal release from DPs throughout the whole CML failure process.Metal pollutants release occurred at three different stages of CML failure process, and there are potential risks of water quality deterioration exceeding the maximum allowable levels set by national standards in the partial failure stage and lining peeling stage.Furthermore, the effects of water chemistry(Cl^(−),SO_(4)^(2−),NO_(3)−,and Ca^(2+))on corrosion scale growth and iron release activity, were investigated during the CML partial failure stage. Results showed that the CML failure process in DPs was accelerated by the autocatalysis of localized corrosion.Cl^(−)was found to damage the uncorroded metal surface, while SO_(4)^(2−)mainly dissolved the corrosion scale surface, increasing iron release. Both the oxidation of NO_(3)−and selective sedimentation of Ca2+were found to enhance the stability of corrosion scales and inhibit iron release. 展开更多

The article examines the physical, petrographic, mineralogical, and microstructural properties of mortar samples taken from a medieval structure located in northwestern Anatolia.Six mortar samples collected from the structure were analyzed using advanced techniques such as acid loss, ignition loss, sieve analysis, physical analyses, polarizing and stereo microscope observations,SEM-EDS,XRD,and TGA.The mortars examined exhibit hydraulic properties. The hydraulic character of the mortars is mainly provided by brick dust and aggregates exhibiting pozzolanic activity.Acid loss and ignition loss analyses indicate that the binder-aggregate ratios vary between 1:1 and 1:3.The elemental and mineral composition of these mortars was analyzed using EDS and XRD,respectively.Analytical techniques revealed the presence of quartz, feldspar, muscovite, biotite, vaterite, and aragonite crystals. The results were supported by thermogravimetric analysis. This study provides important references for the formulation of compatible repair mortars to ensure the proper preservation of materials used in masonry walls of large-scale structures in similar geographical areas. It is intended that this study, based on the examination of mortar samples taken from the structure, will contribute to future research. 展开更多

In order to study the effects of the contents of used mortar recycled aggregate(OMRA)and brick recycled aggregate(BRA)on the deformation properties of recycled aggregate concrete(RAC),under uniaxial compression conditions,The RAC of OMRA(0%,5%,10%,and 15%)and BRA(0%,3%,6%,9%,12%,and 15%)were studied. The experimental results show that, under uniaxial compression, the interfacial relationships of RAC containing OMRA and BRA between different materials are more complex, and the failure mechanism is also more complex. The content of OMRA and BRA had significant influence on the deformation behavior of RAC.When the content of OMRA and BRA is high,it is difficult for existing formulas and models to accurately represent the actual value. In this study, the influence of OMRA and BRA content is taken into account, and the existing formulas for calculating concrete deformation are modified,so that these formulas can more accurately calculate the elastic modulus, peak strain and ultimate strain of recycled concrete. The stress-strain formula of Guo concrete fits the stress-strain curve of concrete very well.We modified the formula on the basis of Guo formula to make the formula more suitable for the stress-strain curve of recycled concrete containing old mortar and brick, and the theoretical model proposed has better fitting accuracy. The study provides a valuable reference for nonlinear analysis of recycled aggregate concrete structures under different proportions of OMRA and BRA. 展开更多

Rubberized concrete is one of the most studied applications of discarded tires and offers a promising approach to developing materials with enhanced properties. The rubberized concrete mixture results in a reduced modulus of elasticity and a reduced compressive and tensile strength compared to traditional concrete. This study employs finite element simulations to investigate the elastic properties of rubberized mortar(RuM),considering the influence of inclusion stiffness and interfacial debonding.Different homogenization schemes, including Voigt,Reuss, and mean-field approaches, are implemented using DIGIMAT and ANSYS.Furthermore, the influence of the interfacial transition zone(ITZ)between mortar and rubber is analyzed by periodic homogenization.Subsequently, the influence of the ITZ is examined through a linear fracture analysis with the stress intensity factor as a key parameter, using the ANSYS SMART crack growth tool. Finally,a non-linear study in FEniCS is carried out to predict the strength of the composite material through a compression test.Comparisons with high density polyethylene(HDPE)and gravel inclusions show that increasing inclusion stiffness enhances compressive strength far more effectively than simply improving the mortar/rubber bond.Indeed, when the inclusions are much softer than the surrounding matrix, any benefit gained on the elastic modulus or strength from stronger interfacial adhesion becomes almost negligible. This study provide numerical evidence that tailoring the rubber’s intrinsic stiffness—not merely strengthening the rubber/mortar interface—is a decisive factor for improving the mechanical performance of RuM. 展开更多

In this paper, the effects of four different mineral ginseng materials on the mechanical properties of mortar were studied, and the results showed that high territory, fly ash,and silica fume had an inhibitory effect on the drying shrinkage of mortar, and mineral powder increased the drying shrinkage of mortar. The high territory in the mineral admixture has the best effect on the inhibition of mortar drying shrinkage. The compressive strength and flexural strength of the mortar can be improved by adding a certain amount of mineral admixture, which increases the compressive strength by about 20%-40%and the flexural strength by about 20%-30%compared with the control group, and the improvement effect difference between different components is not large. 展开更多

This research addresses the growing demand for high-performance protective materials against high-velocity projectile impacts. The performance of multi-layered steel fiber-reinforced mortar(SFRM)panels with varying thicknesses and air gaps, was experimentally investigated under single and repeated impacts of 7.62×51 mm bullets fired from a distance of 50 m.The impact events were recorded using a high-speed camera at 40000 fps.Panel performance was assessed in terms of failure modes, kinetic energy absorption, spalling diameter, and percentage of back-face damage area, and weight loss. Results showed that panel configuration significantly influenced performance.Panel P10,with 70 mm SFRM thickness and 20 mm air gaps, provided the highest resistance, dissipating 5223 J of kinetic energy and preventing back-face damage. In contrast,P7,which absorbed 4476 J,presented a back damage area percentage of 8.93%after three impacts.Weight loss analysis further confirmed durability improvements, with P10 showing only 1.53%cumulative loss compared to 3.26%in P7.The inclusion of wider air gaps enhanced energy dissipation and reduced damage.Comparison between single and repeated impacts demonstrated the sustained resistance of high-performance panels, with P10 maintaining minimal degradation across three consecutive impacts. These findings highlight the potential of multi-layer SFRM panels to enhance ballistic resistance, making them suitable for military, security, and civilian protective applications requiring long-term durability. 展开更多

In this paper, the durability of cement mortar prepared with a recycled-concrete fine powder(RFP)was examined;including the analysis of a variety of aspects, such as the carbonization, sulfate attack and chloride ion erosion resistance. The results indicate that the influence of RFP on these three aspects is different. The carbonization depth after 30 days and the chloride diffusion coefficient of mortar containing 10%RFP decreased by 13.3%and 28.19%.With a further increase in the RFP content, interconnected pores formed between the RFP particles, leading to an acceleration of the penetration rate of CO_(2)and Cl^(−).When the RFP content was less than 50%,the corrosion resistance coefficient of the compressive strength of the mortar was 0.84-1.05 after 90 days of sulfate attack. But the expansion and cracking of the mortar was effectively alleviated due to decrease of the gypsum production.Scanning electron microscope(SEM)analysis has confirmed that 10%RFP contributes to the formation of a dense microstructure in the cement mortar. 展开更多

Red mud(RM)is a low-activity industrial solid waste, and its utilization as a resource is currently a hot topic. In this study, the micro characteristics of red mud at different calcination temperatures were analyzed using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The performance of calcined red mud was determined through mortar strength tests. Results indicate that high-temperature calcination can change the mineral composition and microstructure of red mud,and increase the surface roughness and specific surface area.At the optimal temperature of 700°C,the addition of calcined red mud still leads to a decrease in mortar strength, but its activity index and flexural coefficient increase by 16.2%and 11.9%with respect to uncalcined red mud, reaching values of 0.826 and 0.974,respectively.Compared with the control group, the synergistic activation of calcined red mud with slag can increase the compressive and flexural strength of the mortar by 12.9%and 1.5%,reaching 8.7 and 62.4 MPa,respectively.Correspondingly, the activity index and flexural coefficient of the calcined RM and GGBS(Ground Granulated Blast furnace Slag)mixtures also increase to 1.015 and 1.130,respectively. 展开更多

Purpose–During the construction process of the China Railway Track System(CRTS)I type filling layer, the nonwoven fabric bags have been used as grouting templates for cement asphalt(CA)emulsified mortar. The porous structure of nonwoven fabrics endowed the templates with breathability and water permeability. The standard requires that the volume expansion rate of CA mortar must be controlled within 1%–3%,which can generate expansion pressure to ensure that the cavities under track slabs are filled fully. However, the expansion pressure caused some of the water to seep out from the periphery of the filling bag,and it would affect the actual mix proportion of CA mortar. The differences in physical and mechanical properties between the CA mortar under track slabs and the CA mortar formed in the laboratory were studied in this paper. The relevant results could provide important methods for the research of filling layer materials for CRTS I type and other types of ballastless tracks in China.Design/methodology/approach–During the inspection of filling layer, the samples of CA mortar from different working conditions and raw materials were taken by uncovering the track slabs and drilling cores. The physical and mechanical properties of CA mortar under the filling layer of the slab were systematically analyzed by testing the electrical flux, compressive strength and density of mortar in different parts of the filling layer.Findings–In this paper, the electric flux, the physical properties and mechanical properties of different parts of CA mortar under the track slab were investigated. The results showed that the density, electric flux and compressive strength of CA mortar were affected by the composition of raw materials for dry powders and different parts of the filling layer. In addition, the electrical flux of CA mortar gradually decreased within 90 days’age. The electrical flux of samples with the thickness of 54 mm was lower than 500 C.Therefore, the impermeability and durability of CA mortar could be improved by increasing the thickness of filling layer.Besides, the results showed that the compressive strength of CA mortar increased, while the density and electric flux decreased gradually, with the prolongation of hardening time.Originality/value–During 90 days’age, the electrical flux of the CA mortar gradually decreased with the increase of specimen thickness and the electrical flux of the specimens with the thickness of 54 mm was lower than 500 C.The impermeability and durability of the CA mortar could be improved by increasing the thickness of filling layer. The proposed method can provide reference for the further development and improvement of CRTS I and CRTS II type ballastless track in China. 展开更多

To explore the role of biofilm formation on the corrosion of marine concrete structures, we investigated the attachment of biofilm on mortar surfaces in simulated seawater and the influence of biofilm on the microstructure of mortar surfaces. The results show that the evolution of biofilm on mortar surfaces in simulated seawater is closely related to the corrosion suffered by the mortar, and the process of biofilm attachment and shedding is continuous and cyclical. It is found that the specimens in the absence of biofilm attachment are more severely eroded internally by the corrosive medium in simulated seawater than those in the presence of biofilm attachment. For the specimens without biofilm attachment, after 60 days, gypsum forms, and after 120 days, the number of pores in the mortar is reduced. In contrast, for the specimens in the presence of biofilm attachment, gypsum could only be detected after 90 days, and fewer pores are filled. Therefore, the formation of biofilm could delay the invasion of the corrosive medium into the interior of mortar during the evolution of biofilm on mortar surfaces, mitigating the corrosion of mortars in seawater. 展开更多

The cement mortar lining(CML)of commonly used ductile iron pipes can severely deteriorate the drinking water quality at the initial stage of use,but the behavioral characteristics of different elements release from the CML in this stage is still unclear. In this study, dynamic immersion experiments with new cement mortar lined ductile iron pipe reactors were conducted under different feed water hardness and alkalinity conditions. The results showed that the release of alkaline substances from the CML at the initial stage of use could strongly influence the pH of water, which consequently greatly impacted the release/precipitation behaviors of calcium, aluminum and silicon. The pH and aluminum concentration of the effluent water could reach 11.5 and 700μg/L within 24 hr of hydraulic retention time, respectively, under conditions of relatively lower hardness and alkalinity.Due to the pH elevation, calcium carbonate precipitation could occur even at much lower feed water alkalinity.Whereas the aluminum and silicon could keep release from the CML in soluble form at different hardness and alkalinity levels, and their release rate depended on the amount of calcium carbonate precipitation. Thus, aluminum and silicon were more suitable as indicators of the corrosion intensity at the initial stage of CML use rather than the traditional calcium carbonate precipitation potential.Appropriate feed water hardness and alkalinity levels for mitigating the initial intense corrosion of CML were proposed:hardness>40 mg/L(CaCO_(3)),alkalinity>100 mg/L(CaCO_(3)). 展开更多

To investigate the freeze-thaw(F-T)damages and failure characteristics of rock mass with arc-shaped joints in cold regions, three types of cement mortar specimens with different central angles and prefabricated arc-shaped flaws are subjected to uniaxial compressive tests under different F-T cycles.Experimental observations show that the uniaxial compressive strength of specimens are significantly influenced by F-T cycles and their failure modes are mainly affected by the central angleαof the prefabricated flaws.Unlike the specimens with a central angle of 60°,the specimens with a central angle of 120°and 180°have greater curvature of flaws,so tensile cracks occur in the arc-top area of their prefabricated flaws.According to experimental images observed by environmental scanning electron microscope(ESEM),as the number of F-T cycles increases, the deterioration effect of the specimen becomes more obvious, which is specifically reflected in the increase of the mass loss, peak stress loss, and damage variables as a power function, and the peak strain decreases as a quadratic polynomial.According to numerical results using two-dimensional particle flow code(PFC2D),it is found that F-T cycles cause more damage to the specimen in the early stages than in the later ones. The area of the concentrated compressive stress zone in the middle is decreased due to the increased number of F-T cycles, while the area of the surrounding tensile-shear stress zone is increased. The models appear different failure modes due to the release of concentrated stress in different tensile-shear zones. 展开更多

This study aims to investigate the feasibility of using decoration waste powder(DWP)as a partial replacement for fly ash(FA)in the preparation of geopolymer masonry mortar, and to examine the effect of different DWP replacement rates(0%-40%)on the fresh and mechanical properties of the mortar. The results showed that each group of geopolymer masonry mortar exhibited excellent water retention performance, with a water retention rate of 100%,which was due to the unique geopolymer mortar system and high viscosity of the alkaline activator solution.Compared to the control group, the flowability of the mortar containing lower contents of DWP(10%and 20%)was higher. However,as the DWP replacement rate further increased, the flowability gradually decreased. The DWP could absorb the free water in the reaction system of geopolymer mortar, thereby limiting the occurrence of geopolymerization reaction. The incorporation of DWP in the mortar resulted in a decrease in compressive strength compared to the mortar without DWP.However, even at a replacement rate of 40%,the compressive strength of the mortar still exceeded 15 MPa,which met the requirements of the masonry mortar. It was feasible to use DWP in the geopolymer masonry mortar.Although the addition of DWP caused some performance loss,it did not affect its usability. 展开更多

To investigate the influences of different admixtures on the drying shrinkage of polymer mortar in a metakaolin base, the experiments of VAE(vinyl acetate ethylene copolymer),APAM(anionic polyacrylamide)and CPAM(cationic polyacrylamide)on the drying shrinkage properties of geopolymer mortar were designed under normal temperature curing conditions. An SP-175 mortar shrinkage dilatometer was introduced to measure the dry shrinkage of geopolymer mortar.Meanwhile, the drying shrinkage properties of geopolymer mortar are exhibited by the parameters of water loss rate, drying shrinkage rate, drying shrinkage strain and drying shrinkage coefficient. The experimental data are further fitted to obtain the prediction model of dry shrinkage of geopolymer mortar, which can better reflect the relationship between dry shrinkage rate and time. Finally, the experimental results demonstrate that the dry shrinkage of geopolymer mortar can be significantly increased by adding 4%VAE admixture, meanwhile under the condition that the polymer film formed by VAE reaction can strengthen and toughen the mortar.2.5%APAM admixture and 1.5%CPAM admixture can enhance the dry shrinkage performance of geopolymer mortar in a certain range. 展开更多

Cement mortar with sticky rice pulp is an innovative composite material.Investigating its mechanical properties and strength mechanism is essential for the future engineering application.Taking the pulp concentration and the mortar ages as the variables,we tested five groups of blocks for the compressive strength and flexural strength, and observed their microstructures with a scanning electronic microscope. The results indicated that the microstructure got dense if the added pulp had a concentration of about 0.3%,and thereby its flexural strength would significantly improve, while the hydration products agglomerated and the microstructure got loose if the added pulp had a concentration of more than 1.0%,which caused a substantial decline in flexural strength.Besides, the hydration reaction was hindered at the early stage due to the addition of the pulp;hence the early strength of the mortar is on the low side.According to the strength mechanism analysis, all the results are mainly attributed to the effects:"water-reduction",agglomeration and retarding, caused by the addition of the pulp. 展开更多

Cement-based materials are fundamental in the construction industry, and enhancing their properties is an ongoing challenge. The use of superabsorbent polymers(SAP)has gained significant attention as a possible way to improve the performance of cement-based materials due to their unique water-absorption and retention properties. This study investigates the multifaceted impact of kaolin intercalation-modified superabsorbent polymers(K-SAP)on the properties of cement mortar. The results show that K-SAP significantly affects the cement mortar’s rheological behavior, with distinct phases of water absorption and release, leading to changes in workability over time.Furthermore,K-SAP alters the hydration kinetics, delaying the exothermic peak of hydration and subsequently modifying the heat release kinetics.Notably,K-SAP effectively maintains a higher internal relative humidity within the mortar, reducing the autogenous shrinkage behavior.Moreover,K-SAP can have a beneficial effect on pore structure and this can be ascribed to the internal curing effect of released water from K-SAP. 展开更多

This study focuses on the effect of ultrafine waste glass powder on cement strength, gas permeability and pore structure.Varying contents were considered, with particle sizes ranging from 2 to 20μm.Moreover,alkali activation was considered to ameliorate the reactivity and cementitious properties, which were assessed by using scanning electron microscopy(SEM),energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDS),and specific surface area pore size distribution analysis.According to the results, without the addition of alkali activators, the performance of glass powder mortar decreases as the amount of glass powder increases, affecting various aspects such as strength and resistance to gas permeability.Only 5%glass powder mortar demonstrated a compressive strength at 60 days higher than that of the control group. However, adding alkali activator(CaO)during hydration ameliorated the hydration environment, increased the alkalinity of the composite system, activated the reactivity of glass powder, and enhanced the interaction of glass powder and pozzolanic reaction. In general, compared to ordinary cement mortar,alkali-activated glass powder mortar produces more hydration products, showcases elevated density, and exhibits improved gas resistance.Furthermore,alkali-activated glass powder mortar demonstrates an improvement in performance across various aspects as the content increases. At a substitution rate of 15%,the glass powder mortar reaches its optimal levels of strength and resistance to gas permeability, with a compressive strength increase ranging from 28.4%to 34%,and a gas permeation rate reduction between 51.8%and 66.7%. 展开更多
