Tick studies in Malaysia have experienced a dynamic evolution characterized by periods of growth, stagnation, and the potential for revival.Beginning during the colonial era in the early 1900s,tick studies were primarily conducted by European scientists and curators, establishing the foundation for tick taxonomy in the region.Pioneering works by George Henry Falknier Nuttall and Cecil Warburton introduced several new tick species, including Haemaphysalis(H.)calva,H.mjoebergi,H.vidua and H.wellingtoni[1].However,some records from this period are now considered doubtful, for instance Amblyomma(A.)breviscutatum,A.clypeolatum and A.integrum.The 1929 description of Ornithodoros batuensis by Stanley Hirst[2]marked the first documentation of a soft tick species in Malaysia, setting the stage for subsequent research endeavours. The Golden Age of tick studies(early 1950s-late 1980s)in Malaysia saw a surge in tick research activities. 展开更多

Objective:To assess the complete vaccination coverage and timeliness of childhood vaccinations among Indigenous children in Peninsular Malaysia. Methods:The study utilized data from the 2022 Orang Asli Health Survey,a cross-sectional survey conducted among a representative sample of Orang Asli in Peninsular Malaysia.A total of 68 villages were randomly selected from a pool of 853 villages, encompassing diverse geographic and sociodemographic contexts with a total of 15950 respondents Orang Asli successfully interviewed. However, this study only utilized data from surveyed children aged 12 to 59 months with a total of 1551 children included.Validated structured questionnaires were used to collect sociodemographic data and health status, with nurses verifying vaccination records.Children who received all nine primary vaccinations were defined as having complete vaccination while those who received vaccine within the recommended time were defined as having timely vaccination.Data analysis was conducted using IBM SPSS version 25.0,focusing on descriptive analyses of children's vaccination status. Results:The prevalence of overall complete vaccination among Indigenous children was 87.7%,while timely vaccination was only 40.3%.The prevalence of complete vaccination for Bacillus Calmette-Guérin(BCG),the first dose of hepatitis B,three doses of DTaP-IPV-Hib,and measles, mumps, and rubella(MMR)was above 95.0%,except for the second and third doses of hepatitis B.The prevalence of timely vaccination ranged from above 95.0%for vaccines given at birth, gradually decreasing with increasing age to 57.5%for the first dose of MMR.Moreover, the completion rates for three doses of DtaP-IPV-Hib and the initial dose of MMR surpassed 90%among Indigenous children aged 12-23 months, yet the timeliness remained at a moderate level. Conclusions:While the overall complete vaccination coverage among Indigenous children in Malaysia is relatively high, there are concerning disparities in the timeliness of vaccination, particularly as children age. 展开更多

With the deepening of cross-cultural educational cooperation between China and Malaysia, the cross-cultural challenges that Chinese overseas students face in Malaysia due to language and cultural differences have become increasingly prominent.Focusing on Chinese graduate students at a public university in Malaysia where English is the medium of instruction, this study employs a scale survey method in conjunction with IBM SPSS 26.0 and Smart PLS 4.0 for data analysis to quantitatively explore the level of language anxiety and its relationship with cross-cultural adaptability and learning motivation. The results indicate that most Chinese graduate students experience notable language anxiety, which is significantly negatively correlated with cross-cultural adaptability, especially academic adaptability, but is not related to learning motivation.Furthermore, the study reveals the complex influencing mechanism of language anxiety within multicultural educational environments and offers suggestions for improvement tailored to Malaysia’s unique educational context. These include utilizing technological tools for language interventions, optimizing classroom teaching strategies, enhancing language learning motivation through external incentives, strengthening training for cross-cultural adaptation skills, and promoting deeper cross-cultural communication. This study provides theoretical support and practical references for alleviating language anxiety and enhancing the cross-cultural adaptability of Chinese overseas students. 展开更多

Objective:To explore existing practices and challenges in the delivery of geriatric home medication review(HMR).The study was part of a larger study aimed to offer solution to expand the range of geriatric HMR.Methods:This study employed qualitative exploratory design through semi-structured individual in-depth interviews with the public pharmacists involved in the delivery of geriatric HMR at public hospitals. The purpose of the interviews was to explore challenges faced by them in the delivery of geriatric HMR.Results:Based on the emerging themes from the qualitative data, the study reveals that geriatric HMR in Malaysia is integrated as part of multidisciplinary home care visits, encompassing a diverse patient population with various healthcare needs. However,it faces challenges such as the lack of outcome monitoring, formal training, and workforce constraints.Despite these hurdles, there is a pressing need for the expansion of this service to better serve the community, and collaboration with community pharmacists holds potential to broaden its scope.Ultimately, the findings suggest that pharmacist-led HMR is both warranted and feasible within the Malaysian healthcare context. In order to optimize medicine-use among older people living in the community, approaches for expanding geriatric HMR services in Malaysia must be developed. Conclusions:This study holds profound implications as it attempts to illuminate policy makers in developing countries, enabling them to formulate effective HMR plans.By considering the challenges highlighted within this research, policy makers can design a comprehensive HMR service that caters adeptly to the healthcare needs of the mass population. 展开更多

Objective:To address the lack of research on invasive group B Streptococcus(GBS)infections in Malaysia and Southeast Asia through a comprehensive analysis of GBS isolates obtained from hospitals. Methods:Medical records from patients with GBS infection isolated from the sterile site, such as blood and cerebrospinal fluid from 14 July 2019 to 15 December 2020,were reviewed from six major hospitals in Peninsular Malaysia.Inclusion criteria were invasive GBS,sterile sites and non-repeated GBS isolated from the same patients in the same admission.Viable isolates were re-identified for GBS and serotyped. Results:A total of 118 patients were eligible, with a majority of non-pregnant adults(76.3%).Over half of the patients(62.7%)had underlying medical conditions, with diabetes as the most common disease, followed by respiratory disease, renal disease, cardiovascular disease and skin and soft tissue disease. The most common manifestations were sepsis, followed by soft tissue abscess, diabetic foot ulcer, wet gangrene and cellulitis. The overall mortality was 7.6%.The most common serotype was serotype桋.Conclusions:Invasive GBS infection among non-pregnant adults showed a rising trend, particularly among diabetic individuals. The study underscores the importance of reducing risk factors and highlights the necessity of developing GBS vaccination as a preventive strategy for both infants and adults. 展开更多

Models can offer the most accurate forecasting outcomes if error terms are normally distributed. Finding a good statistical model for time series predicting imports in Malaysia is the main target of this study. The decision made during this study mostly addresses the unrestricted error correction model (UECM), and composite model (Combined regression—ARIMA). The imports of Malaysia from the first quarter of 1991 to the third quarter of 2022 are employed in this study’s quarterly time series data. The forecasting outcomes of the current study demonstrated that the composite model offered more probabilistic data, which improved forecasting the volume of Malaysia’s imports. The composite model, and the UECM model in this study are linear models based on responses to Malaysia’s imports. Future studies might compare the performance of linear and nonlinear models in forecasting. 展开更多
