Multiple braking mechanisms have been introduced for use in vehicles. This study explores the potential of using magneto-rheological fluid (MRF) brakes in automotive applications. MRF brakes offer controllable braking force due to a magnetic field, but their use is limited by simulation challenges. In this study, a 7-tooth MRF brake model is proposed. The brake model is simulated in Altair Flux software to analyze magnetic field distribution, braking torque, and its variation under different currents and disc speeds. The simulation conditions also consider both viscous and electromagnetic torque components. Then, the results are analyzed across different brake regions, including rotor, stator, and fluid gap. These results provide valuable insights for designing, manufacturing, installing, and testing MRF brakes for automotive use. 展开更多

The aim of this study is to address the issues associated with traditional magnetorheological fluid(MRF)dampers, such as insufficient damping force after power failure and susceptibility to settlement. In order to achieve this,a bidirectional adjustable MRF damper was designed and developed.Magnetic field simulation analysis was conducted on the damper, along with simulation analysis on its dynamic characteristics. The dynamic characteristics were ultimately validated through experimental testing on the material testing machine, thereby corroborating the theoretical simulation results.Concurrently, this process generated valuable test data for subsequent implementation of the semi-active vibration control system. The simulation and test results demonstrate that the integrated permanent magnet effectively accomplishes bidirectional regulation. The magnetic induction intensity of the damping channel is 0.2 T in the absence of current, increases to 0.5 T when a maximum forward current of 4 A is applied, and becomes 0 T when a maximum reverse current of 3.8 A is applied. When the excitation amplitude is 8 mm and the frequency is 2 Hz,with the applied currents varying, the maximum damping force reaches 8 kN,while the minimum damping force measures at 511 N.Additionally,at zero current, the damping force stands at 2 kN,which aligns closely with simulation results. The present paper can serve as a valuable reference for the design and research of semi-active MRF dampers. 展开更多

Low-frequency structural vibrations caused by poor rigidity are one of the main obstacles limiting the machining efficiency of robotic milling.Existing vibration suppression strategies primarily focus on passive vibration absorption at the robotic end and feedback control at the joint motor.Although these strategies have a certain vibration suppression effect, the limitations of robotic flexibility and the extremely limited applicable speed range remain to be overcome. In this study,a Magnetorheological Joint Damper(MRJD)is developed. The joint-mounted feature ensures machining flexibility of the robot, and the millisecond response time of the Magnetorheological Fluid(MRF)ensures a large effective spindle speed range.More importantly, the evolution law of the damping performance of MRJD was revealed based on a low-frequency chatter mechanism, which guarantees the application of MRJD in robotic milling machining. To analyze the influence of the robotic joint angle on the suppression effect of the MRJD,the joint braking coefficient and end braking coefficient were proposed.Parallel coordinate plots were used to visualize the joint range with the optimal vibration suppression effect. Finally,a combination of different postures and cutting parameters was used to verify the vibration suppression effect and feasibility of the joint angle optimization. The experimental results show that the MRJD,which directly improves the joint vibration resistance, can effectively suppress the low-frequency vibration of robotic milling under a variety of cutting conditions. 展开更多

High-performance devices usually have curved surfaces, requiring high accuracy of shape and low surface roughness. It is a challenge to achieve high accuracies for form and position on a device with low surface roughness. However, due to the unique nonlinear rheology, magnetorheological fluids with hard abrasives are widely applied in ultra-precision surface finishing. Compared with conventional mechanical finishing, magnetorheological finishing displays obviously advantages, such as high precision shape of machined surface, low surface roughness and subsurface damage, and easy control for finishing processes. However, finishing performance depends on various factors, e.g. volume fraction and distribution of magnetic particles, types of hard abrasives and additives, strength of magnetic field, finishing forms. Therefore, a comprehensive review on related works is essential to understand the state-of-the-art of magnetorheological finishing and beneficial to inspire researchers to develop lower cost, higher machining accuracy and efficient approaches and setups, which demonstrates a significant guidance for development of high-performance parts in fields of aerospace, navigation and clinical medicine etc. This review starts from the rheological property of magnetorheological fluids, summarizing dynamically nonlinear rheological properties and stable finishing approaches. Then, the effect of components in magnetorheological fluids is discussed on finishing performance, consisting of magnetic particles, carrier fluid, additives and abrasives. Reasonable configuration of magnetorheological fluids, and different magnetorheological finishing methods are presented for variously curved surfaces. In addition, the current finishing forms and future directions are also addressed in this review. 展开更多

Magnetorheological elastomers(MREs)hold significant promise in various fields such as automotive engineering, and civil engineering, where they serve as intelligent materials.Depending on the application of an external magnetic field, these materials exhibit varying magnetorheological and viscoelastic properties, including shear stress, yield stress, dynamic moduli, and damping. In this work,a new type of MRE,termed self-healing MREs(SH-MREs),has been developed by adding a novel self-healing agent into existing MREs.The dynamic modulus and loss factor of SH-MREs with different compositions have been characterized under various conditions of frequency, temperature, and strain. The results show that as the strain value increases, the loss factor also increases. Moreover, the loss factor initially increases and then decreases with increasing magnetic field strength.Although higher concentrations of ferromagnetic particles increase the loss factor, they enhance the operational range due to their better responsiveness to magnetic fields.SH-MREs demonstrate improved damping capabilities, attributed to the formation of coordination bonds between ferromagnetic particles and the self-healing agent. The stable structure increases the viscosity of MREs.The results of the regression model suggest a direct proportionality between sensitivity to the magnetic field and the ferromagnetic particle concentration. 展开更多

This study aims to develop a magnetorheological(MR)damper for semi-active knee prostheses to restore the walking ability of transfemoral amputees. The core dimensions of the MR damper were determined via theoretical magnetic field calculations, and the theoretical relationship between current and joint torque was derived through electromagnetic simulation. Then,a physical prototype of the semi-active prosthetic knee equipped with the MR damper was manufactured.Based on the data obtained from angle sensor, pressure sensor(loadcell),and inertial measurement unit(IMU)on the prosthesis,a matching control algorithm is developed. The joint torque of the MR damper can be adaptively adjusted according to the walking speed of the amputee, allowing the amputee to realize a natural gait. The effectiveness of the control program was verified by the ADAMS and MATLAB co-simulation.The results of the test and simulation show that the MR damper can provide sufficient torque needed for normal human activities. 展开更多

Sandwich structures are widespread in engineering applications because of their advantageous mechanical properties.Recently, their acoustic performance has also been improved to enable attenuation of low-frequency vibrations induced by noisy environments. Here,we propose a new design of sandwich plates(SPs)featuring a metamaterial core with an actively tunable low-frequency bandgap. The core contains magnetorheological elastomer(MRE)resonators which are arranged periodically and enable controlling wave attenuation by an external magnetic field. We analytically estimate the sound transmission loss(STL)of the plate using the space harmonic expansion method. The low frequency sound insulation performance is also analyzed by the equivalent dynamic density method, and the accuracy of the obtained results is verified by finite-element simulations. Our results demonstrate that the STL of the proposed plate is enhanced compared with a typical SP analog, and the induced bandgap can be effectively tuned to desired frequencies. This study further advances the field of actively controlled acoustic metamaterials, and paves the way to their practical applications. 展开更多

Thin copper substrates with high accuracy are highly required in precision physical experiments. However, even using double-sided lapping, the flatness is still limited due to the accuracy of lapping plate, process vibration and so on.Hence,as a subsequent process, this paper employs magnetorheological finishing(MRF)to further improve the flatness.Nevertheless, thin copper substrates, which are sensitive to the stress, deformed easily with uneven material removal on the surface. Therefore,MRF is adopted on machining thin copper substrate for the first time considering deformation induced by stress.A finite element model is established to evaluate the deformation by residual stress, and the results show that the deformation tends to be more serious with the increase of the material removal.According to the simulation results, the material removal is optimized considering both deformation and efficiency, and a series of experiments are conducted on aΦ100×2.8 mm workpiece to verify the simulation results. The experimental results show that the flatness is further improved from peak to valley(PV)6.6μm to PV 2.3μm with optimized processing parameters.Hence, the feasibility of magnetorheological finishing on thin copper substrate is demonstrated. 展开更多

Based on the magnetic interaction energy, using derivative of the magnetic energy density, a model is proposed to compute the magnetic-induced shear modulus of magnetorheological elastomers. Taking into account the influences of particles in the same chain and the particles in all adjacent chains, the traditional magnetic dipole model of the magnetorheological elastomers is modified. The influence of the ratio of the distance etween adjacent chains to the distance between adjacent particles in a chain on the magnetic induced shear odulus is quantitatively studied. When the ratio is large, the multi-chain model is compatible with the single chain model, but when the ratio is small, the difference of the two models is significant and can not be neglected. Making certain the size of the columns and the distance between adjacent columns, after constructing the computational model of BCT structures, the mechanical property of the magnetorheological elastomers composed of columnar structures is analyzed. Results show that, conventional point dipole model has overrated the magnetic-induced shear modulus of the magnetorheological elastomers. From the point of increasing the magnetic-induced shear modulus, when the particle volume fraction is small, the chain-like structure exhibits better result than the columnar structure, but when the particle volume fraction is large, the columnar structure will be better. 展开更多

Magnetorheological(MR)materials are a class of smart material, whose the mechanical/rheological state can be controlled under a magnetic field.Magnetorheological materials are typically fluids, gels,or elastomers. In this study, anisotropic and isotropic magneto-rheological elastomer(MRE)samples were fabricated using a silicone rubber matrix with carbonyl iron particles as filler particles. The magnetic field-dependent inductance properties of these samples were studied using inductors specially designed for the analysis. The effect of the filler particle content, fabrication conditions, and inductance properties were characterized using a self-built system in both constant and transient magnetic fields. These factors show a significant effect on the inductance properties of the MRE inductor under an applied magnetic field. The anisotropic MRE inductor was more sensitive than the inductor based on an isotropic MRE.Owing to the presence of a constant magnetic field, the inductance value of the MRE inductor decreased with an increase in the external magnetic field. An attempt in elucidation of the mechanism is reported here. This study may enable the MRE to be widely used in practical applications such as monitoring magnetic field or detecting the filler particle content inside MR materials. 展开更多

Hemispherical shell resonator(HSR)is the core component of hemispherical resonator gyro.It is aφ-shaped small-bore complex component with minimum curvature radius less than 3 mm.Thus, traditional polishing methods are difficult to polish it.Small ball-end magnetorheological polishing method can polish the small components with complicated three-dimensional surface and obtain non-destructive surface. Therefore, this method is suitable for polishing HSR.However, the material removal rate of the ordinary small ball-end magnetorheological polishing is low, leading to long polishing time and low output of HSR.To solve this problem,a water bath heating assisted small ball-end magnetorheological polishing method is proposed in this research. The influence rule of processing parameters on the material removal rate is studied experimentally.A set of optimal processing parameters is obtained to maximize the material removal rate.Compared with the ordinary method, the material removal rate of the new method can be improved by 143%.Subsequently,an HSR is polished by the new method. The results show that the polishing time can be reduced by 55%,and the polished surface roughness can reach 7.7 nm.The new method has the great potential to be used in actual production to improve the polishing efficiency of HSR. 展开更多

Fatigue properties of magnetorheological elastomer (MRE) samples were investigated based on cis-polybutadiene rubber by using a fatigue test machine. Three MRE samples with iron particles mass fraction of 60%, 70%, and 80% were fabricated, and their properties dependence of three strain amplitudes (50%, 75%, and 100%) were measured. The absolute magnetorheological (MR) effect, storage modulus, and loss modulus of MRE samples after fatigue were evaluated by a modified dynamic mechanical analyzer. The results revealed that MR effect, storage modulus, and loss modulus of MREs containing 80% iron particles depended strongly on the strain amplitudes and the number of cycles, while storage mod-ulus and loss modulus of MREs containing 70% iron particles also depended on the strain amplitudes and the number of cycles but not as strongly as sample which contains 80% iron particles, but the properties of MREs containing 60% iron particles after cyclic deforma-tion were almost independent of the fatigued conditions. In order to investigate the fatigue mechanism of MREs, the sample was carried out with a quasi-static tensile testing and its surface morphology during testing was observed in situ by scanning electron microscopy. 展开更多

This paper investigates the problem of controlling half-vehicle semi-active suspension system involving a magnetorheological(MR)damper. This features a hysteretic behavior that is presently captured through the nonlinear Bouc-Wen model. The control objective is to regulate well the heave and the pitch motions of the chassis despite the road irregularities. The difficulty of the control problem lies in the nonlinearity of the system model, the uncertainty of some of its parameters, and the inaccessibility to measurements of the hysteresis internal state variables.Using Lyapunov control design tools,we design two observers to get online estimates of the hysteresis internal states and a stabilizing adaptive state-feedback regulator. The whole adaptive controller is formally shown to meet the desired control objectives. This theoretical result is confirmed by several simulations demonstrating the supremacy of the latter compared to the skyhook control and passive suspension. 展开更多

Time-delay of magnetorheological elastomer bearing(MRB) can bring structural response menace to bridges. This paper investigates a bridge pier-bearing semi-active-coupling control method based on model predictive control(MPC). The presented strategy takes the structure prediction model to predict the state responses of the controlled plant in a period of future time. Then, the control law can be determined by solving a finite horizon optimization problem. The peak shearing force of pier top, the displacement and the acceleration of beam are chosen as control goals, and the vibration isolation rate is applied to characterize the vibration isolation effect. It is noted that MPC method naturally takes the time-delay and uncertain interference into consideration, and significantly improves the control performance of the system. Finally, the numerical example is described and the seismic response of isolated bridge based on MRB is analyzed. The simulation results show that predictive control can be used to control the time-delay of bridge system in different degrees. The best control performance is at0.4 s. Even if the time-delay reaches 2 s, it is still good. Therefore, the control method significantly reduces the adverse effects of time-delay on the system, and has a good vibration isolation performance. 展开更多

Magnetorheological (MR) fluid is a type of a smart material that can control its mechanical properties under a magnetic field. Iron particles in MR fluid form chain structures in the direction of an applied magnetic field, which is known as MR effect, resulting in variation of stiffness, shear modulus, damping and tribological characteristics of MR fluid. As MR effect depends on the density of particles in the fluid or the strength of a magnetic field, the experiments are conducted to evaluate the friction property under reciprocating motion by changing the types of MR fluid and the strength of a magnetic field. The material of aluminum, brass, and steel are chosen for specimen as they are the most common material in mechanical applications. The surfaces of specimen are also observed by optical microscope before and after experiments to compare the surfaces with test conditions. The comparing results show that the friction coefficient increases as the strength of a magnetic field increases in regardless of types of MR fluid or the material. Also the density of particle in MR fluid affects the friction characteristic. The results from this research can be used to improve the performance of mechanical applications using MR fluid. 展开更多

The dynamical mechanical properties were characterized by using a dynamic mechanic analyzer. In particular, both the MR effect and its durability were investigated. The experimental results showed that RV samples have large magnetoinduced modulus, large zero-field modulus, and good durability property of MR effect. To explain these results, cubic deformation and plasticizer migration were analyzed. Large magneto-induced modulus of RV sample results from cubic deformation during vulcanization process.
