High-plastic clays with significant volume change due to moisture variations present critical challenges to civil engineering structures.Limestone calcined clay cement(LC3),an innovative and sustainable hydraulic binder,demonstrates significant potential for improving the engineering characteristics of such soils.Nevertheless,the impact of LC3 on the physico-mechanical characteristics of treated soil under a cyclic wet-dry environment remains unclear.This study for the first time investigates LC3's impact on the long-term durability of treated high-plastic clays through comprehensive macro-micro testing including physical,mechanical,mineralogical,and microstructural investigations with an emphasis on wet-dry cycles.The results revealed that LC3 treatment exhibits significant resistance to wet-dry cycles by completely mitigating the swelling potential,and a considerable reduction in plasticity resulting in enhanced workability.The compressibility and shear strength parameters have been significantly improved to several orders of magnitude.However,after six wet-dry cycles,a slight to modest reduction is observed,but overall durability remains superior to untreated soil.Cohesive and structural bonding ratios quantitatively assessed the impact of wet-dry cycles emphasizing the advantage of LC3 treatment.According to mineralogical and microstructural evaluation,the mechanism behind the adverse effects of wet-dry cycles on the compressibility and strength behavior of LC3-treated soil is mainly attributed to:(1)weakening of CSH/C(A)SH and ettringite(AFt)phases by exhibiting lower peak intensities;and(2)larger pore spaces due to repeated wet-dry cycles.These findings highlight LC3's performance in enhancing the long-term behavior and resilience of treated soils in real-world scenarios,providing durable solutions for infrastructure challenges. 展开更多

Overviewing the air pollution situation in Hong Kong,energy generation and transportation are part of the contribution to the carbon emissions.Electric vehicles do not have engines and no air pollutants emissions.The promotion of electric vehicles serves as an important strategy to Hong Kong's goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.This paper illustrated the financial incentives the Hong Kong Government has launched,including First Registration Tax concessions,profits tax deduction,One-for-One Scheme,lower license fee,subsidy support for e-buses and e-taxis,free charging services at government car parks,EV-charging at home Subsidy Scheme,etc.By comparing the cost of purchasing and owning vehicles with the cost of purchasing and owning electric vehicles as well as the market performance of electric vehicles to examine whether the financial incentives in Hong Kong can promote electric vehicles and serve as a prerequisite to low carbon transition.The results show that under government support and promotion associated with preferential policy,electric vehicles will become the future trend in Hong Kong with the advantage of lower emissions,energy saving,and environmental protection. 展开更多

The impact of green finance on low carbon economic development in the context of carbon neutrality:evidence from China

The global climate crisis has become the focus of attention,and China vigorously pursues low-carbon economic development,for which the implementation of green finance is continuously enhanced,so does the development of green finance contribute to low-carbon economic development?This paper constructs a green finance and low carbon economic development index system containing several indicators,and measures them using the entropy weight method of spatial-temporal extreme difference.This paper conducts an empirical study based on the data of 30 provinces and cities from 2005 to 2020,and the results of the study find that green finance has policy incentive effect and institutional incentive effect,and can significantly and positively affect the development of low-carbon economy,and the findings still hold after endogeneity test and robustness test.The mechanism test shows that green finance can influence low-carbon economic development by promoting industrial structure upgrading,green technology innovation and FDI inflow;moreover,the positive promotion effect of green finance is more obvious in the western region and non-Yangtze River Economic Zone region;finally,the moderating effect test reveals that the institutional environment and the level of technology market development can enhance the relationship between green finance and low-carbon economic development. 展开更多

Activated carbon preparation from sugarcane leaves and rice straw by carbonization(250℃–400℃)and activation at 500℃were studied.The effects of pre-oxidation,hydrolysis of derived charcoals by boiled KMnO4 aqueous solution were evaluated.The derived charcoals products were pretreated using oxidation-hydrolysis with 1–5 wt.%KMnO4 at 100℃and then activated at 500℃.The derived charcoal and activated carbon products were characterized by FTIR,XRD,SEM-EDS and BET.Iodine number and methylene blue number of derived products were also used for the analysis of the products.It was found that fabricated charcoal materials made at 350℃–400℃possess good characteristics with low content of surface functional groups and high carbon content.After pre-oxidation-hydrolysis and activation at 500℃,the resulting derived activated carbon materials from charcoals with 400℃carbonization temperature have high content of oxygen containing surface functional groups such as Mn-O,Si-O,Si-O-Si,C-O,or O-H.In addition,MnO_(2) accumulated on the surface of the derived activated carbon products.The surface area and pore volume of the activated carbon products have also increased with increasing of KMnO_(4) concentration from 1 to 3 wt.%and then decreased with 5 wt.%used during activation.Therefore,activated carbon products made by pre-oxidation-hydrolysis with 3 wt.%KMnO_(4) were used for Fe(Ⅲ)adsorption experiments.It was found that Fe(Ⅲ)adsorption on the activated carbon materials can be fitted with both the Freundlich and the Langmuir models.The calculated maximum Fe(Ⅲ)adsorption capacities of sugarcane leaves derived activated carbon and rice straw derived activated carbon products were 50.00 and 39.37 mg/g,respectively.It was shown that the effect of pre-oxidation-hydrolysis by KMnO_(4) and activation at 500℃are beneficial for activated carbon preparation with environmentally friendly and low-cost simplified operation. 展开更多

Carbon dioxide(CO_(2))emissions from the cement industry account for 26%of the total industrial emissions,and the need to develop low-carbon techniques within the cement industry is extremely urgent.Low-carbon projects and technologies for the cement industry in different regions and countries have been thoroughly reviewed in this manuscript,and the low-carbon development concept for each county has been analyzed.For developing countries such as China and India,energy saving and efficiency enhancement are currently the key points,while for developed countries and regions such as Europe,more efforts have been focused on carbon capture,utilization,and storage(CCUS).Global CCUS projects have been previously conducted,and the majority of CCUS projects are currently performed in Europe where major projects such as the CEMCAP,CLEANKER,and IEILAC projects represent the latest research progress in cement production technologies and low-carbon technologies for the global cement industry.The development of low-carbon cement technologies has changed from focusing on the end point to instead focusing on the source and process through the exploration of hydrogen and solar energies,and more disruptive and original technologies are expected to be developed,particularly in the cement industry in China. 展开更多

The launch of the carbon-allowance trading market has changed the cost structure of the power industry.There is an asynchronous coupling mechanism between the carbon-allowance-trading market and the day-ahead power-system dispatch.In this study,a data-driven model of the uncertainty in the annual carbon price was created.Subsequently,a collaborative,robust dispatch model was constructed considering the annual uncertainty of the carbon price and the daily uncertainty of renewable-energy generation.The model is solved using the column-and-constraint generation algorithm.An operation and cost model of a carbon-capture power plant(CCPP)that couples the carbon market and the economic operation of the power system is also established.The critical,profitable conditions for the economic operation of the CCPP were derived.Case studies demonstrated that the proposed low-carbon,robust dispatch model reduced carbon emissions by 2.67%compared with the traditional,economic,dispatch method.The total fuel cost of generation decreases with decreasing,conservative,carbon-price-uncertainty levels,while total carbon emissions continue to increase.When the carbon-quota coefficient decreases,the system dispatch tends to increase low-carbon unit output.This study can provide important guidance for carbon-market design and the low-carbon-dispatch selection strategies. 展开更多

7075-T6 aluminum alloy/low carbon steel joint was carried out via a novel friction plug−riveting spot welding process.This process utilized uniquely designed steel rivets with a tip and groove shape.The macro-morpholo... 7075-T6 aluminum alloy/low carbon steel joint was carried out via a novel friction plug−riveting spot welding process.This process utilized uniquely designed steel rivets with a tip and groove shape.The macro-morphology formation,microstructure,microhardness and lap shear performance of joints were investigated.As the spindle down distance increased,the rivet tip was friction welded with the lower steel sheet,resulting in the formation of a solid phase welding zone exhibiting metallurgical bonding.Additionally,a hook was formed in the joint,providing the mechanical locking.The results showed that under optimal parameters of spindle down distance of 3.4 mm,rotation speed of 4000 r/min,and spindle down speed of 2.4 mm/s,the lap shear load of the joints reached a maximum of 14.36 kN.Failure occurred at the aluminum alloy base metal. 展开更多

Coal pyrolysis integrated with dry reforming of low-carbon alkane(CP-DRA)is an effective way to improve tar yield.Ni/La_(2)O_(3)-ZrO_(2) with a La/Zr ratio of 4 was a good catalyst for DRA to inhibit carbon deposition and obtain high tar yield in CP-DRA.In this study,the fraction distribution and component of tars from CP-DRA and coal pyrolysis in N_(2) atmosphere(CP-N_(2))were characterized by using several methods to understand the effect of DRA on coal pyrolysis.The isotope trace method was also used to discuss the role of low-carbon alkane in CP-DRA.The results showed that the tar from CP-N_(2)is mainly composed of aliphatic compounds with more C_(al),H_(al) and CH+CH_(2),and the tar from CP-DRA contains more Car,Har,and CH_(3),and has lower weight-average molecular weight and more light tar content than CP-N_(2).A small amount of C_(2)H_(6) addition in CP-DRA will raise the ratio of H_(β) and CH+CH_(2).Electron paramagnetic resonance(EPR)analysis shows that the tar from CP-DRA has a higher radical concentration while the corresponding char has a lower radical concentration.The isotope trace experiment showed that alkanes provide·H,·CH_(3),etc.to stabilize the radicals from coal pyrolysis and result in more alkyl aromatic compounds during CP-DRA. 展开更多

Fatigue properties play a crucial role as they are vital to ensuring the durability and integrity of components subjected to repeated loading conditions over long periods.The main objective of this work is to investigate the fatigue behavior of dual phase low-carbon steels used in automotive applications using a rotating bending fatigue machine.Heat treatments were carried out to analyze the microstructure's effect on the fatigue properties,including quenching low-carbon steel samples at 800℃ and 900℃.Hardness and tensile tests were performed,and the microstructure was inspected to examine the constitute phases.With the assistance of a scanning electron microscope,fractographic analyses were carried out to reveal the fracture features of the samples at different lifetime ranges.The results show that various failure mechanisms occur depending on the stress levels.Additionally,the specimens quenched at 900℃ exhibited higher fatigue strength. 展开更多

The effect of adding MgO nanoparticles(0%,0.01%,0.05%,and 0.10%)on the inclusion and acicular ferrite(AF)formation in 1.8%Ni low carbon Al-killed(LCAK)steel was explored.The inclusion analysis reveals that MgO nanoparticles react with dissolved Al or Al_(2)O_(3)inclusions and finally change to fine MgAl_(2)O_(4)wrapped by MnS in the case of adding 0.05%Mgo nanoparticles.In contrast,Mgo nanoparticles are agglomerated and form Mg-bearing inclusion clusters in the case of 0.10%or reduced to high Al_(2)O_(3)inclusions by dissolved Al in the case of 0.10%.The microstructure observations show that the AF formation was promoted in the case with addition of 0.05%Mgo nanoparticles.The process of inclusion-inducing AF nucleation is essentially characterized via the high-temperature confocal scanning laser microscopy experiment.δ_(min)(δdenotes disregistry)of Al_(2)O_(3)/α-Fe,MgAl_(2)O_(4)/α-Fe,and MnS/α-Fe is evaluated to be 11.5%,6.5%,and 7.4%,respectively.The high AF fraction in the case of 0.05%MgO addition can be attributed to the low disregistry of MnS–MgAl_(2)O_(4)/ferrite and Mn-depleted zone adjacent to the MnS layer.Based on the results,0.05%was recommended as the proper addition amount of MgO nanoparticles in 1.8%Ni LCAK steel. 展开更多

This research paper aims to compare the strengths and weaknesses that China has demonstrated in the implementation of its low-carbon city strategy and to summarise the valuable experience that China can provide to the world in the implementation of its low-carbon city strategy. This essay analyses in depth the advantages that China has shown in the areas of renewable energy use and government mechanisms, as well as the shortcomings that it has shown in the areas of eco-efficiency industrial structure and capacity upgrading. Then, the paper summarises the successful experiences of the Chinese government in the establishment of renewable energy use and governmental mechanisms, such as the local government’s ability to coordinate multiple sectors (industrial sector, energy sector, etc.) and the implementation of responsibilities. In comparison, the paper also further discusses that China’s implementation of a low-carbon strategy in the future may have more eco-efficiency, industrial structure and capacity upgrading. 展开更多

We have described in detail the effects of nano-SiO_(2),nano-CaCO_(3),carbon nanotubes,and nano-Al_(2)O_(3) on geopolymer concrete from the perspectives of macro mechanics and microstructure.The existing research results show that the mechanism of nano-materials on geopolymer concrete mainly includes the filling effect,nucleation effect,and bridging effect,the appropriate amount of nano-materials can be used as fillers to reduce the porosity of geopolymer concrete,and can also react with Ca(OH)2 to produce C-S-H gel,thereby improving the mechanical properties of geopolymer concrete.The optimum content of nano-SiO_(2) is between 1.0%and 2.0%.The optimum content of nano-CaCO_(3) is between 2.0%and 3.0%.The optimum content of carbon nanotubes is between 0.1%and 0.2%.The optimum content of nano-Al_(2)O_(3) is between 1.0%and 2.0%.The main problems existing in the research and application of nanomaterial-modified geopolymer concrete are summarized,which lays a foundation for the further application of nanomaterial in geopolymer concrete. 展开更多

Aimed at the low carbon economy and the characteristics of planning EIA in the industrial development region,the planning EIA index system which merged with the low carbon economy concept in the industrial development region was established.The construction planning of national eco-industrial park in Hefei High-tech Industrial Development Zone was comprehensively evaluated by using the gray correlation method.The evaluation results of considering and without considering the low carbon index were contrasted and were verified by using the improved entropy method.The results showed that the regional sustainable development index constantly rose,and the planning was reasonable.Moreover,the suggestions were also put forward to tackle the problems. 展开更多

Within the transition process of urban rail transit systems,the challenges of high energy consumption,increasing carbon emissions,limited economic viability,and intricate risks emerge as significant hurdles.This paper proposes a novel energy utilization framework for the urban rail transit system that incorporates underground energy storage systems characterized by high resilience and low carbon.First,existing methods employed in urban rail transit are comprehensively reviewed.Then,a novel framework and strategic significance of the urban rail transit system incorporating underground energy storage systems are introduced.This integration effectively utilizes and manages diverse renewable energy sources and the available space resources.The viability is demonstrated through a case study by combining Nanjing metro.Finally,suggestions for research in pivotal areas are summarized. 展开更多
