Precipitation events spanning multiple days may have consequences different from those limited to a single day.In the present paper,the authors analyze circulation anomalies and precursory signals associated with long...Precipitation events spanning multiple days may have consequences different from those limited to a single day.In the present paper,the authors analyze circulation anomalies and precursory signals associated with long-duration(over 14 days) summer precipitation events over southern China.The results show that the over-14-day precipitation events are induced by an anomalous lowertropospheric(850-hPa) cyclone over the South China Sea(SCS) and southern China.The anomalous westerly winds to the south of the anomalous cyclone can be traced to north of New Guinea 30 days before.To the north of anomalous westerly winds,anomalous easterly winds appear later.The anomalous westerly and easterly winds form a cyclonic anomaly,moving northward and slightly westward during the following days and eventually controlling the SCS and southern China.The northward movement of anomalous westerly and easterly winds can also be found in the 30-60-day filtered wind field.This implies that the northward propagating 30-60-day intraseasonal oscillation from the equatorial western Pacific has an important contribution to over-14-day precipitation events over southern China.展开更多
In this paper,the influence of ground motion duration on the inelastic displacement ratio,C_(1),of highly damped SDOF systems is studied.For this purpose,two sets of spectrally equivalent long and short duration groun...In this paper,the influence of ground motion duration on the inelastic displacement ratio,C_(1),of highly damped SDOF systems is studied.For this purpose,two sets of spectrally equivalent long and short duration ground motion records were used in an analysis to isolate the effects of ground motion duration on.The effect of duration was evaluated for observed values of C_(1) by considering six ductility levels,and different damping and post-yield stiffness ratios.A new predictive equation of C_(1) also was developed for long and short duration records.Results of non-linear regression analysis of the current study provide an expression with which to quantify the duration effect.Based on the average values of estimated C_(1) ratios for long duration records divided by C_(1) for a short duration set,it is concluded that the maximum difference between long and short duration records occurs when the damping ratio is 0.3 and the post-yield stiffness ratio is equal to zero.展开更多

The consequent strong ground motions are supposed to be able to impose high de...The Türkiye earthquake sequence on February 6, 2023, was featured by the closely located earthquake doublet of M_(W)7.8 and M_(W)7.5. The consequent strong ground motions are supposed to be able to impose high demands on the ultra-low-cycle fatigue performance of metallic dampers in buildings, including the widely used buckling restrained braces. This study evaluates the cumulative plastic deformation(CPD) demands on bucklingrestrained braces(BRBs) in multi-story buildings imposed by the strong ground motions in the 2023 Türkiye earthquake doublet. Thirty-two records of the highest peak ground accelerations were selected from the strong motion database. Among them, eight captured the ground motions during both events, and the rest only captured the shaking of either of the events. The CPD demands on the BRBs in reinforced concrete frames with various fundamental periods, brace-to-frame stiffness ratios, and BRB ductility ratio are calculated by nonlinear time history analyses and are summarized in the form of enveloped spectra of CPD ratios at constant ductility. The results show that the CPD demands on BRBs increase with smaller brace-toframe stiffness ratios and larger BRB ductility ratios. The enveloped CPD demands are several hundreds of times the nominal yield deformation of the BRB, which are much higher than the CPD demands for the calibration tests of BRBs stipulated by AISC 341 in the US.展开更多
Since 1980,both the intensity and duration of summer heatwaves in the middle and high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere have significantly increased,leading this region to become a critical area for a significant i...Since 1980,both the intensity and duration of summer heatwaves in the middle and high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere have significantly increased,leading this region to become a critical area for a significant increase in the frequency of intense and long-lived extreme heatwaves.We found that stronger and more persistent high-pressure systems and lower soil moisture before the events were the main drivers of intense and long-lived extreme heatwaves in western Europe and the middle and high latitudes of North America.However,in eastern Europe and Siberia,lower cloud cover before events is also a main driver of this type of extreme heatwave,in addition to the above drivers.These factors are coupled with each other and can change heatwave intensity and duration by influencing surface radiation processes during events.Using the self-organizing map classification method,we found that 6 weather patterns with increased frequency,intensity,and duration were the main dynamic reasons leading to the increase in intense and long-lived extreme heatwaves after 1980.In addition,the decrease in summer average soil moisture in most areas of the mid-high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere and the decrease in average cloud cover in eastern Europe and Siberia are found to be the main thermodynamic reasons leading to the increase in these extreme heatwaves.展开更多

However, no current transaction model can provide full transaction support for such long running business processes. This paper proposes a new transaction model, the pessimistic predicate/transform (PP/T) model, which can provide full transaction support for long running business processes. A framework was proposed on the enterprise JavaBeans platform to implement the PP/T model. The framework enables application developers to focus on the business logic, with the underlying platform providing the required transactional semantics. The development and maintenance effort are therefore greatly reduced. Simulations show that the model has a sound concurrency management ability for long running business processes.展开更多
