The high-temperature dissolution behavior of primary carbides in samples taken from GCr15 continuous-casting bloom was observed in-situ by confocal laser scanning microscopy.Equations were fitted to the dissolution kinetics of primary carbides during either heating or soaking.Dissolution of carbides proceeded in three stages(fast→slow→faster)as either temperature or holding time was increased.During the heating process and during the first and third stages of the soaking process, the original size of the carbides determined the steepness of the slope, but during the middle(“slow”)stage of the soaking process, the slope remained zero. The initial size of the carbides varied greatly, but their final dissolution temperature fell within the narrow range of 1210-1235℃,and the holding time remained within 50 min.Fractal analysis was used to study the morphological characteristics of small and medium-sized carbides during the dissolution process.According to changes in the fractal dimension before and after soaking, the carbides tended to evolve towards a more regular morphology. 展开更多

Branch angles are an important plant morphological trait affecting light interception within forest canopies. However, studies on branch angles have been limited due to the time-consuming nature of manual measurements using a protractor.Terrestrial laser scanning(TLS),however, provides new opportunities to measure branch angles more efficiently.Despite this potential, studies validating branch angle measurements from TLS have been limited. Here, our aim is to evaluate both manual and automatic branch angle measurements of European beech from TLS data using traditional field-measurements with a protractor as a reference. We evaluated the accuracy of branch angle measurements based on four automated algorithms(aRchiQSM,TreeQSM,Laplacian,SemanticLaplacian)from TLS data.Additionally,we assessed different ways of manual branch angle measurements in the field. Our study was based on a dataset comprising 124 branch angles measured from six European beech in a European deciduous forest. Our results show that manual branch angle measurements from TLS data are in high agreement with the reference(root-mean-squared error,RMSE:[3.57°-4.18°],concordance correlation coefficient,CCC:[0.950.97])across different branch length positions.Automated algorithms also are in high agreement with the reference although RMSE is approximately twice as large compared to manual branch angle measurements from TLS(RMSE:[9.29°-10.55°],CCC:[0.830.86])with manual leaf points removal. When applying the automatic wood-leaf separation algorithm, the performance of the four methods declined significantly, with only approximately 20 branch angles successfully identified. Moreover,it is important to note that there is no influence of the measurement position(branch surface versus center)for branch angle measurements. However, for curved branches, the selection of branch measurement length significantly impacts the branch angle measurement. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of branch angle measurements in forests. We show that automated measurement methods based on TLS data of branch angles are a valuable tool to quantify branch angles at larger scales. 展开更多

Site index(SI)is determined from the top height development and is a proxy for forest productivity, defined as the expected top height for a given species at a certain index age.In Norway,an index age of 40 years is used.By using bi-temporal airborne laser scanning(ALS)data,SI can be determined using models estimated from SI observed on field plots(the direct approach)or from predicted top heights at two points in time(the height differential approach).Time series of ALS data may enhance SI determination compared to conventional methods used in operational forest inventory by providing more detailed information about the top height development. We used longitudinal data comprising spatially consistent field and ALS data collected from training plots in 1999,2010,and 2022 to determine SI using the direct and height differential approaches using all combinations of years and performed an external validation. We also evaluated the use of data assimilation.Values of root mean square error obtained from external validation were in the ranges of 16.3%–21.4%and 12.8%–20.6%of the mean fieldregistered SI for the direct approach and the height differential approach, respectively. There were no statistically significant effects of time series length or the number of points in time on the obtained accuracies.Data assimilation did not result in any substantial improvement in the obtained accuracies.Although a time series of ALS data did not yield greater accuracies compared to using only two points in time,a larger proportion of the study area could be used in ALS-based determination of SI when a time series was available. This was because areas that were unsuitable for SI determination between two points in time could be subject to SI determination based on data from another part of the time series. 展开更多

The correction of Light Detection and Ranging(LiDAR)intensity data is of great significance for enhancing its application value. However, traditional intensity correction methods based on Terrestrial Laser Scanning(TLS)technology rely on manual site setup to collect intensity training data at different distances and incidence angles, which is noisy and limited in sample quantity, restricting the improvement of model accuracy. To overcome this limitation, this study proposes a fine-grained intensity correction modeling method based on Mobile Laser Scanning(MLS)technology. The method utilizes the continuous scanning characteristics of MLS technology to obtain dense point cloud intensity data at various distances and incidence angles. Then,a fine-grained screening strategy is employed to accurately select distance-intensity and incidence angle-intensity modeling samples. Finally, based on these samples,a high-precision intensity correction model is established through polynomial fitting functions. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, comparative experiments were designed, and the MLS modeling method was validated against the traditional TLS modeling method on the same test set.The results show that on Test Set 1,where the distance values vary widely(i.e.,0.1–3 m),the intensity consistency after correction using the MLS modeling method reached 7.692 times the original intensity, while the traditional TLS modeling method only increased to 4.630 times the original intensity. On Test Set 2,where the incidence angle values vary widely(i.e.,0○–80○),the MLS modeling method, although with a relatively smaller advantage, still improved the intensity consistency to 3.937 times the original intensity, slightly better than the TLS modeling method’s 3.413 times. These results demonstrate the significant advantage of the modeling method proposed in this study in enhancing the accuracy of intensity correction models. 展开更多

To investigate the nucleation behavior during the single-phased metallic solidification process, the commercial ultrapure ferritic stainless steels with no(Initial steel)and various melt treatments(R1,MR1,Y2,MY1,and M1 steels)were used to carry out the differential scanning colorimetry(DSC)and high-temperature confocal laser scanning microscope(HT-CLSM)experiments.Based on the results of DSC experiments, the equilibrium solidification process as well as the relationship among the critical undercooling degree(△T_(c)^(DSC)),latent heat of fusion/crystallization(△H_(f)/△H_(c)),equiaxed grain ratio(ER),and average grain size(△_(ave)^(ingot))was revealed.ER is increased with the decreasing△T_(c)^(DSC)and increasing△H_(f)/△H_(c);however,△_(ave)^(ingot)is decreased with them.Referring to the results of HT-CLSM experiments, the average sizes of micro-/macrostructures(d_(ave)/D_(ave)/)are decreased with the increasing cooling rate,as well as the difference between and apparent critical undercooling degree(△T_(c)^(CLSM))was revealed. The heterogeneous nucleation of the crystal nuclei occurs only if△T_(c)^(CLSM)>△T_(c)^(DSC).Combining with the interfacial wetting-lattice mismatch heterogeneous nucleation model, the dynamic mechanism of the metallic solidification was revealed. The as-cast grains of the melt-treated samples were obviously refined, owing to the much higher actual heterogeneous nucleation rates(I_(heter.,i))obtained through melt treatments, and the heterogeneous nucleation rates(I_(heter.,ij))for all samples are increased with the cooling rates, firmly confirming that the as-cast grains of each sample could be refined by the increasing cooling rates. 展开更多

Non-contact remote sensing techniques, such as terrestrial laser scanning(TLS)and unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV)photogrammetry, have been globally applied for landslide monitoring in high and steep mountainous areas. These techniques acquire terrain data and enable ground deformation monitoring. However, practical application of these technologies still faces many difficulties due to complex terrain, limited access and dense vegetation. For instance, monitoring high and steep slopes can obstruct the TLS sightline, and the accuracy of the UAV model may be compromised by absence of ground control points(GCPs).This paper proposes a TLS-and UAV-based method for monitoring landslide deformation in high mountain valleys using traditional real-time kinematics(RTK)-based control points(RCPs),low-precision TLS-based control points(TCPs)and assumed control points(ACPs)to achieve high-precision surface deformation analysis under obstructed vision and impassable conditions. The effects of GCP accuracy,GCP quantity and automatic tie point(ATP)quantity on the accuracy of UAV modeling and surface deformation analysis were comprehensively analyzed. The results show that, the proposed method allows for the monitoring accuracy of landslides to exceed the accuracy of the GCPs themselves by adding additional low-accuracy GCPs.The proposed method was implemented for monitoring the Xinhua landslide in Baoxing County,China, and was validated against data from multiple sources. 展开更多

Vertical forest structure is closely linked to multiple ecosystem characteristics, such as biodiversity, habitat, and productivity.Mixing tree species in planted forests has the potential to create diverse vertical forest structures due to the different physiological and morphological traits of the composing tree species. However, the relative importance of species richness, species identity and species interactions for the variation in vertical forest structure remains unclear, mainly because traditional forest inventories do not observe vertical stand structure in detail.Terrestrial laser scanning(TLS),however, allows to study vertical forest structure in an unprecedented way. Therefore,we used TLS single scan data from 126 plots across three experimental planted forests of a largescale tree diversity experiment in Belgium to study the drivers of vertical forest structure. These plots were 9–11years old young pure and mixed forests, characterized by four levels of tree species richness ranging from monocultures to four-species mixtures, across twenty composition levels. We generated vertical plant profiles from the TLS data and derived six stand structural variables.Linear mixed models were used to test the effect of species richness on structural variables.Employing a hierarchical diversity interaction modelling framework,we further assessed species identity effect and various species interaction effects on the six stand structural variables. Our results showed that species richness did not significantly influence most of the stand structure variables, except for canopy height and foliage height diversity.Species identity on the other hand exhibited a significant impact on vertical forest structure across all sites.Species interaction effects were observed to be site-dependent due to varying site conditions and species pools, and rapidly growing tree species tend to dominate these interactions.Overall, our results highlighted the importance of considering both species identity and interaction effects in choosing suitable species combinations for forest management practices aimed at enhancing vertical forest structure. 展开更多

The use of mobile laser scanning to survey forest ecosystems is a promising, scalable technology to describe forest 3D structures at high resolution. To confirm the con-sistency in the retrieval of forest structural parameters using hand-held laser scanning(HLS),before operationalizing the method, confirming the data is crucial. We analyzed the per-formance of tree-level mapping based on HLS under differ-ent phenology conditions on a mixed forest in western Spain comprising Pinus pinaster and two deciduous species,Alnus glutinosa and Quercus pyrenaica. The area was surveyed twice during the growing season(July 2022)and once in the deciduous season(February 2022)using several scan-ning paths.Ground reference data(418 trees,15 snags)was used to calibrate the HLS data and to assess the influence of phenology when converting 3D data into tree-level attrib-utes(DBH,height and volume). The HLS-based workflow was robust at isolating tree positions and recognizing stems despite changes in phenology.Ninety-six percent of all pairs matched below 65 cm.For DBH,phenology barely altered estimates. We observed a strong agreement when comparing HLS-based tree height distributions. The values exceeded 2 m when comparing height measurements, confirming height data should be carefully used as reference in remote sensing-based inventories, especially for deciduous species.Tree volume was more precise for pines(r=0.95,and rela-tive RMSE=21.3–23.8%)compared to deciduous species(r=0.91–0.96,and relative RMSE=27.3–30.5%).HLS data and the forest structural complexity tool performed remark-ably,especially in tree positioning considering mixed forests and mixed phenology conditions. 展开更多

Sustainable forest management heavily relies on the accurate estimation of tree parameters.Among others, the diameter at breast height(DBH) is important for extracting the volume and mass of an individual tree. For systematically estimating the volume of entire plots, airborne laser scanning(ALS) data are used. The estimation model is frequently calibrated using manual DBH measurements or static terrestrial laser scans(STLS) of sample plots.Although reliable, this method is time-consuming,which greatly hampers its use. Here,a handheld mobile terrestrial laser scanning(HMTLS) was demonstrated to be a useful alternative technique to precisely and efficiently calculate DBH.Different data acquisition techniques were applied at a sample plot, then the resulting parameters were comparatively analysed. The calculated DBH values were comparable to the manual measurements for HMTLS,STLS,and ALS data sets.Given the comparability of the extracted parameters, with a reduced point density of HTMLS compared to STLS data, and the reasonable increase of performance, with a reduction of acquisition time with a factor of5 compared to conventional STLS techniques and a factor of3 compared to manual measurements,HMTLS is considered a useful alternative technique. 展开更多

Effective implementation of goaf detection and accurate acquisition of its spatial characteristics including the three-dimensional morphology the spatial position as well as the actual boundary and volume are important basis to analyze predict and control disasters caused by goaf. In recent years three-dimensional laser scanning technology has been effectively applied in goaf detection [3 4]. Large quantities of point cloud data that are acquired for goaf by means of the three-dimensional laser scanning system are processed relying on relevant engineering software to generate a three-dimensional model for goaf. The estimation of shear strength of rock mass discontinuity is always a focal, but difficult, problem in the field of geotechnical engineering. Considering the disadvantages and limitation of exist- ing estimation methods, a new approach based on the shadow area percentage (SAP) that can be used to quantify surface roughness is proposed in this article. Firstly, by the help of laser scanning technique, the three-dimensional model of the surface of rock discontinuity was established. Secondly, a light source was simulated, and there would be some shadows produced on the model surface. Thirdly, to obtain the value of SAP of each specimen, the shadow detection technique was introduced for use. Fourthly, compared with the result from direct shear testing and based on statistics, an empirical for- mula was found among SAP, normal stress, and shear strength. Data of Yujian (~ River were used as an example, and the following conclusions have been made. (1) In the case of equal normal stress, the peak shear stress is positively proportional to the SAP. (2) The formula for estimating was derived, and the predictions of peak-shear strength made with this equation well agreed with the experimental re- suits obtained in laboratory tests. 展开更多

The appearance of 3D laser scanning technology is one of the most important technology revolutions in surveying and mapping field. It can be widely used in many interrelated fields, such as engineering constructions and 3D measurements, owing to its prominent characteristics of the high efficiency and high precision. At present its application is still in the initial state, and it is quite rarely used in China, especially in geotechnical engineering and geological engineering fields. Starting with a general introduction of 3D laser scanning technology, this article studies how to apply the technology to high rock slope investigations. By way of a case study, principles and methods of quick slope documentation and occurrence measurement of discontinuities are discussed and analyzed. Background: Forests are a key component of the global carbon cycle, and research is needed into the effects of human-driven and natural processes on their carbon pools. Airborne laser scanning (ALS) produces detailed 3D maps of forest canopy structure from which aboveground carbon density can be estimated. Working with a ALS dataset collected over the 8049-km2 Wellington Region of New Zealand we create maps of indigenous forest carbon and evaluate the influence of wind by examining how carbon storage varies with aspect. Storms flowing from the west are a common cause of disturbance in this region, and we hypothesised that west-facing forests exposed to these winds would be shorter than those in sheltered east-facing sites. Methods: The aboveground carbon density of 31 forest inventory plots located within the ALS survey region were used to develop estimation models relating carbon density to ALS information. Power-law models using rasters of top-of-the-canopy height were compared with models using tree-level information extracted from the ALS dataset. A forest carbon map with spatial resolution of 25 m was generated from ALS maps of forest height and the estimation models. The map was used to evaluate the influences of wind on forests. Results: Power-law models were slightly less accurate than tree-centric models (RMSE 35% vs 32%) but were selected for map generation for computational efficiency. The carbon map comprised 4.5 million natural forest pixels within which canopy height had been measured by ALS, providing an unprecedented dataset with which to examine drivers of carbon density. Forests facing in the direction of westerly storms stored less carbon, as hypothesised. They had much greater above-ground carbon density for a given height than any of 14 tropical forests previously analysed by the same approach, and had exceptionally high basal areas for their height. We speculate that strong winds have kept forests short without impeding basal area growth. Conclusion: Simple estimation models based on top-of-the canopy height are almost as accurate as state-of-the-art tree-centric approaches, which require more computing power. High-resolution carbon maps produced by ALS provide powerful datasets for evaluating the environmental drivers of forest structure, such as wind. 展开更多

Roof bolts such as rock bolts and cable bolts provide structural support in underground mines.Frequent assessment of these support structures is critical to maintain roof stability and minimise safety risks in underground environments. This study proposes a robust workflow to classify roof bolts in 3 D point cloud data and to generate maps of roof bolt density and spacing. The workflow was evaluated for identifying roof bolts in an underground coal mine with suboptimal lighting and global navigation satellite system(GNSS)signals not available. The approach is based on supervised classification using the multi-scale Canupo classifier coupled with a random sample consensus(RANSAC)shape detection algorithm to provide robust roof bolt identification. The issue of sparseness in point cloud data has been addressed through upsampling by using a moving least squares method. The accuracy of roof bolt identification was measured by correct identification of roof bolts(true positives),unidentified roof bolts(false negatives),and falsely identified roof bolts(false positives)using correctness, completeness, and quality metrics. The proposed workflow achieved correct identification of 89.27%of the roof bolts present in the test area. However, considering the false positives and false negatives, the overall quality metric was reduced to 78.54%. 展开更多

Local geometric information and discontinuity features are key aspects of the analysis of the evolution and failure mechanisms of unstable rock blocks in rock tunnels. This study demonstrates the integration of terrestrial laser scanning(TLS)with distinct element method for rock mass characterization and stability analysis in tunnels.TLS records detailed geometric information of the surrounding rock mass by scanning and collecting the positions of millions of rock surface points without contact.By conducting a fuzzy K-means method,a discontinuity automatic identification algorithm was developed, and a method for obtaining the geometric parameters of discontinuities was proposed. This method permits the user to visually identify each discontinuity and acquire its spatial distribution features(e.g.occurrences,spac-ings,trace lengths)in great detail.Compared with hand mapping in conventional geotechnical surveys, the geometric information of discontinuities obtained by this approach is more accurate and the iden-tification is more efficient. Then,a discrete fracture network with the same statistical characteristics as the actual discontinuities was generated with the distinct element method, and a representative nu-merical model of the jointed surrounding rock mass was established.By means of numerical simulation, potential unstable rock blocks were assessed, and failure mechanisms were analyzed. This method was applied to detection and assessment of unstable rock blocks in the spillway and sand flushing tunnel of the Hongshiyan hydropower project after a collapse. The results show that the noncontact detection of blocks was more labor-saving with lower safety risks compared with manual surveys, and the stability assessment was more reliable since the numerical model built by this method was more consistent with the distribution characteristics of actual joints. This study can provide a reference for geological survey and unstable rock block hazard mitigation in tunnels subjected to complex geology and active rockfalls. 展开更多

Background: The distribution of forest vegetation within urban environments is critically important as it influences urban environmental conditions and the energy exchange through the absorption of solar radiation and modulation of evapotranspiration. It also plays an important role filtering urban water systems and reducing storm water runoff. Methods: We investigate the capacity of ALS data to individually detect, map and characterize large(taller than15 m) trees within the City of Vancouver. Large trees are critical for the function and character of Vancouver’s urban forest. We used an object-based approach for individual tree detection and segmentation to determine tree locations(position of the stem), to delineate the shape of the crowns and to categorize the latter either as coniferous or deciduous. Results: Results indicate a detection rate of 76.6% for trees > 15 m with a positioning error of 2.11 m(stem location). Extracted tree heights possessed a RMSE of 2.60 m and a bias of-1.87 m, whereas crown diameter was derived with a RMSE of 3.85 m and a bias of-2.06 m. Missed trees are principally a result of undetected treetops occurring in dense, overlapping canopies with more accurate detection and delineation of trees in open areas. Conclusion: By identifying key structural trees across Vancouver’s urban forests, we can better understand their role in providing ecosystem goods and services for city residents. 展开更多

The spatiotemporal subcellu lar distribution of Ca(2+) in living human fibroblasts exposing to calcium-free medium in response to agonists has been investigated. PDGF, which releases Ca(2+) from intracellular stores by inositol(1, 4, 5)-trisphosphate pathway, produced a biphasic transient rise in intracellular calcium. The initial rise was resulted from a direct release of calcium from the Golgi apparatus. Calcium could be also released from and reaccumulated into the Golgi apparatus by the stimulation of thapsigargin, an inhibitor of the Ca(2+) transport ATPase of intracellular calcium store. Permeablizing the plasma membrane by 10 μM digitonin resulted in the calcium release from the Golgi apparatus and depletion of the internal calcium store. These results suggest that the Golgi apparatus plays a role in Ca(2+) regulation in signal transduction. 展开更多

Background: The stem curve of standing trees is an essential parameter for accurate estimation of stem volume. This study aims to directly quantify the occlusions within the single-scan terrestrial laser scanning(TLS) data, evaluate its correlation with the accuracy of the retrieved stem curves, and subsequently, to assess the capacity of single-scan TLS to estimate stem curves. Methods: We proposed an index, occlusion rate, to quantify the occlusion level in TLS data. We then analyzed three influencing factors for the occlusion rate: the percentage of basal area near the scanning center, the scanning distance and the source of occlusions. Finally, we evaluated the effects of occlusions on stem curve estimates from single-scan TLS data. Results: The results showed that the correlations between the occlusion rate and the stem curve estimation accuracies were strong(r = 0.60–0.83), so was the correlations between the occlusion rate and its influencing factors(r = 0.84–0.99). It also showed that the occlusions from tree stems were the main factor of the low detection rate of stems, while the non-stem components mainly influenced the completeness of the retrieved stem curves. Conclusions: Our study demonstrates that the occlusions significantly affect the accuracy of stem curve retrieval from the single-scan TLS data in a typical-size(32 m × 32 m) forest plot. However, the single-scan mode has the capacity to accurately estimate the stem curve in a small forest plot(< 10 m × 10 m) or a plot with a lower occlusion rate, such as less than 35% in our tested datasets. The findings from this study are useful for guiding the practice of retrieving forest parameters using single-scan TLS data. 展开更多

This paper presents a voxel-based region growing method for automatic road surface extraction from mobile laser scanning point clouds in an expressway environment. The proposed method has three major steps:constructing a voxel model;extracting the road surface points by employing the voxel-based segmentation algorithm;refining the road boundary using the curb-based segmentation algorithm. To evaluate the accuracy of the proposed method, the two-point cloud datasets of two typical test sites in an expressway environment consisting of flat and bumpy surfaces with a high slope were used. The proposed algorithm extracted the road surface successfully with high accuracy. There was an average recall of 99.5%,the precision was 96.3%,and the F1 score was 97.9%.From the extracted road surface,a framework for the estimation of road roughness was proposed.Good agreement was achieved when comparing the results of the road roughness map with the visual image, indicating the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed framework. 展开更多
