We present the design, fabrication, and characterization of a dual polarization, mode-selective photonic lantern(PL) spatial multiplexer supporting three fiber modes (LP_(01), LP^(a)_(11), LP^(b)_(11)), measuring only...We present the design, fabrication, and characterization of a dual polarization, mode-selective photonic lantern(PL) spatial multiplexer supporting three fiber modes (LP_(01), LP^(a)_(11), LP^(b)_(11)), measuring only 300μm in length, for converting between three single-mode input sources and a single three-mode optical fiber. The PL is fabricated directly on the three sources, in this case three cores of a multi-core fiber, using a commercial two-photon polymerization-based 3D nanoprinter. Despite the diminutive size and high index contrast of the polymer core/air cladding waveguides, we observed low insertion loss multiplexing (less than-1.7 d B), low polarization dependent loss (less than-0.25 dB), mode dependent loss of-1.7 d B, low wavelength dependence, and mode group crosstalk of less than-16 dB. We demonstrate mode group multiplexed transmission using our mode-selective multiplexer/demultiplexer pair and a short three-mode fiber link in an on-off keying intensity modulation/direct detection(IM/DD) experiment, recovering two 12.5 Gb/s signals without MIMO processing.展开更多
This study presents a high-accuracy,all-fber mode division multiplexing(MDM)reconstructive spectrometer(RS).The MDM was achieved by utilizing a custom-designed 3×1 mode-selective photonics lantern to launch disti...This study presents a high-accuracy,all-fber mode division multiplexing(MDM)reconstructive spectrometer(RS).The MDM was achieved by utilizing a custom-designed 3×1 mode-selective photonics lantern to launch distinct spatial modes into the multimode fber(MMF).This facilitated the information transmission by increasing light scattering processes,thereby encoding the optical spectra more comprehensively into speckle patterns.Spectral resolution of 2 pm and the recovery of 2000 spectral channels were accomplished.Compared to methods employing single-mode excitation and two-mode excitation,the three-mode excitation method reduced the recovered error by 88%and 50%respectively.A resolution enhancement approach based on alternating mode modulation was proposed,reaching the MMF limit for the 3 dB bandwidth of the spectral correlation function.The proof-of-concept study can be further extended to encompass diverse programmable mode excitations.It is not only succinct and highly efcient but also well-suited for a variety of high-accuracy,high-resolution spectral measurement scenarios.展开更多

The author shows that the only possible relations between products of two Dehn twists and products of mapping classes determined by two parabolic elements of G are the reduced lantern relations. In The Last Gentle...This paper examines in a comparative manner how remembering and forgetting contribute to self-constitution in Walker Percy's The Last Gentleman and William Alexander Percy's Lanterns on the Levee. In The Last Gentleman, Will Barrett embarks upon a journey from the North to the South in quest of identity. Lanterns on the Levee features a similar identity quest pursued, this time, by an autobiographer who records the very process of this quest rather than representing it by a fictional character. Percy the stoic restores realness to people in a lost world, from whom he derives his self and in whom his self is deeply rooted, by remem- bering the personally significant and good past and forgetting the personally insignificant and evil present. In so doing, he not only asserts his personal identity but continues to construct it in an imaginative way. Will, by contrast, seeks to constitute and ascertain his stoic identity both by attempting to forget the every- dayness of ordinary life and thereby establish a genuine relationship with people and by undertaking the pursuit of a fatherly figure who echoes his tenacious memory of his father.
