The Literary Lab at Stanford University is one of the birthplaces of digital humanities and has maintained significant influence in this field over the years.Professor Hui Haifeng has been engaged in research on digital humanities and computational criticism in recent years.During his visiting scholarship at Stanford University,he participated in the activities of the Literary Lab.Taking this opportunity,he interviewed Professor Mark Algee-Hewitt,the director of the Literary Lab,discussing important topics such as the current state and reception of DH(digital humanities)in the English Department, the operations of the Literary Lab,and the landscape of computational criticism.Mark Algee-Hewitt's research focuses on the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries in England and Germany and seeks to combine literary criticism with digital and quantitative analyses of literary texts. In particular,he is interested in the history of aesthetic theory and the development and transmission of aesthetic and philosophical concepts during the Enlightenment and Romantic periods. He is also interested in the relationship between aesthetic theory and the poetry of the long eighteenth century.Although his primary background is English literature,he also has a degree in computer science. He believes that the influence of digital humanities within the humanities disciplines is growing increasingly significant. This impact is evident in both the attraction and assistance it offers to students,as well as in the new interpretations it brings to traditional literary studies. He argues that the key to effectively integrating digital humanities into the English Department is to focus on literary research questions, exploring how digital tools can raise new questions or provide new insights into traditional research. 展开更多

This article explores the intersections of Buddhism,Daoism, and contemporary French literary practice in the study of the everyday(quotidien).Since the 1980s,French literature has increasingly shifted its focus from the exotic to the mundane, engaging with theoretical frameworks developed by scholars such as Henri Lefebvre and Michel de Certeau.Drawing on Buddhist notions of emptiness and dependent arising,as well as Daoist principles of yin-yang interdependence, the article bridges Eastern and Western philosophies to demonstrate the everyday not as a static or trivial backdrop, but as a dynamic and transformative space. It further examines how representations of daily life in the works of Georges Perec and Jacques Roubaud employ the meticulous documentation of mundane details to uncover hidden patterns, rhythms, and structures of human experience.Through literary fieldwork,Perec and Roubaud challenge conventional perceptions of the everyday, unveiling its depth, complexity, and potential for reinvention. 展开更多

The hybridity of words in literary texts and the multiplicity of theoretical discourse fundamentally determine the cross-cultural attributes of literary studies. This feature holds significant value for understanding different cultural traditions and presenting one’s cultural traits in a mutually contextualized manner.By analyzing the cross-cultural essence of literary studies with a focus on word transformation and critical discourse and also emphasizing that literary studies should fully consider the linguistic elements of literary texts, the theoretical origins of critical terminology, and the cultural stance of the researcher,it becomes possible to understand the important role of literary studies in humanistic academic knowledge production. 展开更多

This study applies the basic theories of“Ethical Literary Criticism”proposed by Nie Zhenzhao to Arthur Miller’s play All My Sons, focusing on the ethical predicament Joe Keller faces in his specific ethical identity within the ethical environment of his time.It further points out the process and the consequence of his ethical choices in the conflict between family interests and social responsibilities,so as to reveal the ethical teaching function of the play.Joe’s ethical predicament arises from the contradiction between his family roles and his desire for interests as a businessman. In this conflict, the interaction of the human factor and the animal factor within the“Sphinx factor”causes Joe to make two different ethical choices.Through Joe’s tragic fate,Miller reveals the ethical enlightenment in All My Sons:Individuals, families, and society are inextricably linked,so today’s citizens need to recognize their inherent social nature and fulfill ethical duties in both personal and social aspects.Miller uses the play to criticize the ethical ethos of 20th-century American society and calls on readers to reevaluate the instrumental rationality behind the American Dream. 展开更多

The study found that the classics born during the turbulent Six Dynasties period, starting from Cao Pi’s“The Classics”to“Wen Fu”,“Wen Xin Diao Long”,“Shipin”and other classics, can all be analyzed to have a common origin.Attributes, that is,the philosophical strategy of dualistic isomorphism of explicit and implicit,is also a pattern;it can be proven that this is the philosophical key to interpreting and studying the classics of the Six Dynasties. It not only governs many aesthetic principles and aesthetic methods, but also emphasizes the need to transcend the appearance of current existence, transcend the current utilitarianism, and pay attention to the hidden and non-existent,just like paying attention to dark matter and antimatter in the universe.Pay attention to the origin of Shipin and expand aesthetic horizons;this philosophical secret not only exists in the classics of the Six Dynasties,it has its unity, graphics and vitality,as well as its historical inheritance and continuous operation. Its trajectory marks the context of literary theory and aesthetics;the modern construction of contemporary literary theory must be based on its operating trends.Only by transcending all utilitarianism can we better demonstrate the natural characteristics of Chinese tradition such as nationality.Otherwise, literary theory, aesthetics, and philosophy will not be self-consistent. 展开更多

Due to the culture differences between Chinese and English, it is hard for a translator to achieve complete equivalence at the level of word. Literary translation is the re-creation of the language art.To translate an English novel into Chinese one, translators need the skill of literature re-creation.Taking Zhang Guruo's translated version Tess of the D'urbervilles as an example,we perceive that translators have subjectivity and they should break the boundary between writing and translating. When a translator translates a piece of works,he must get rid of the constraint of the surface structures of the original works, and reproduces the flavor of the original novel. But the translators should try to show the original scenes in the original English novel to target readers. 展开更多

The quality of language use is mainly evaluated at the levels of correctness, appropriateness and creativeness.Stylisticfeatures are manifested at the levels of appropriateness and creativeness. In traditional English grammar teaching, much effort isput on the correctness.Appropriateness is treated in part and creativeness is largely ignored.Isolated from concrete contexts,lin-guistic materials used for grammar teaching tend to be inefficient to ensure effective communication. The teaching of dry grammati-cal rules may lead to monotony and boredom in grammar learning. If the linguistic materials used in grammar teaching address cor-rectness,appropriateness and creativeness in language use simultaneously and are closer to life, grammar learning may be morefruitful. As literary texts are characterized by both the social discourses under multiple contexts and personal tastes, their styles arerich and lively. Therefore,to embed literary texts in English grammar teaching will not only create a more concrete, meaningful andinteresting context for the learning of grammatical rules but also be beneficial for the cultivation of stylistic awareness. 展开更多
