Laser-Induced Graphene (LIG), a 3-dimensional form ofgraphene, is a widely known electrode material for its electrically-induced antimicrobialproperties. However, LIG surfaces exhibit antimicrobial properties exclusively in the presenceof electricity. In this work, copper-doped LIG (Cu-LIG) composite electrodes and filterswere developed with enhanced antimicrobial properties in single-step laser scribing. Thework emphasizes the optimization of copper doping with LIG for both electrical and nonelectrical-based disinfection. The copper doping was optimized to a minimal concentration(∼1%) just to enhance the electrochemical properties of LIG. Furthermore, the excess additionof copper was helpful towards non-electricity-based treatment without significantleaching. The prepared surfaces were tested in both electrodes and filter configuration andshowed excellent antibacterial and antiviral activity against mixed bacterial culture and amodel enteric virus, MS2 bacteriophage. On the application of 2.5 V with Cu-LIG electrodes,6-log removal of bacteria and virus was achieved. Furthermore, the membrane-based electroconductivefilters were tested in a flow-through configuration and demonstrated 6-logremoval at 2.5 V with a flux of ∼ 500 (L·m^(2))/h with both bacteria and viruses at minimumenergy expense. Additionally, reactive oxygen species scavenging and hydrogen peroxidegeneration experiments have confirmed the role of electrical effects and indirect oxidationon the inactivation mechanism. The prepared Cu-LIG composite surfaces showed potentialfor environmental remediation applications.展开更多

Methods: Ad-sCD40LIg- IRES2-CTLA4Ig, replication-defective adenovirus co-expressing sCD40LIg and CTLA4Ig, was constructed and identified. The co-expression of sCD40LIg and CTLA4Ig was evaluated with confocal laser scanning microscope and Western blotting. Skin transplantations of C57BL/6 to BALB/c mice were performed. PBS, Ad-Shuttle-CMV and Ad-sCD40LIg-IRES2-CTLA4Ig were administered. Skin graft survival was monitored and the mRNA expression of both genes was evaluated in the skin allografts. Results: Ad-sCD40LIg-IRESE-CTLA4Ig was constructed successfully and identified. The co-expression of sCD40LIg and CTLA4Ig was identified with confocal laser scanning microscopy and Western blotting. Compared to the skin graft mean survival time (MST) of non-treated group ((5.75±0.71) d) or Ad-Shuttle-CMV-treated group ((5.50±0.53) d), the skin graft MST was dramatically prolonged in the Ad-sCD40LIg-IRESE-CTLA4Ig-treated group (( 16.38± 1.19) d, P〈0.001). Coordination compounds of (±)-2-amino-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl) propionic acid and their mixed ligand complexes with 1,10-phenantroline were synthesized, characterized using electronic and infrared spectral analyses an...Coordination compounds of (±)-2-amino-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl) propionic acid and their mixed ligand complexes with 1,10-phenantroline were synthesized, characterized using electronic and infrared spectral analyses and magnetic susceptibility. The compounds were evaluated for antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. Four different assays were applied for evaluating antioxidant capacity of the compounds. The results obtained indicated a diametric square planar geometry for both cobalt (±)-2-amino-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl) propionic acid complex and its mixed ligand complex. It was suggested that for the binary cobalt(II) complex, the phenolic substituent coordinated with neighbouring central metal ions. However, for the ternary cobalt(II) complex it was suggested it was deprotonated. Octahedral geometry was proposed for both copper complexes. Square planar geometry was indicated for the nickel?(±)-2-amino-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl) propionic acid complex and a mixture of square planar and octahedral geometry for the nickel mixed ligand complex. The cobalt mixed ligand complex elicited the highest activity for all the antioxidant assays. In most cases the binary complexes exhibited better antimicrobial activities relative to their ternary counterparts.展开更多
