Introduction: Breastfeeding is the best way to provide ideal nutrition for optimal infant growth and development. Objectives: The aim of our work was to assess the knowledge, attitudes and practices of mothers of children aged 0 - 24 months on exclusive breastfeeding in the Central African Republic. Methods: This was a cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical study conducted from September 15 to October 15, 2024 among mothers of infants aged 0 to 24 months. Sociodemographic, obstetric and breastfeeding-related data were collected through individual interviews conducted during sensitizations on good feeding practices organized by the Tina Touadera Foundation. The chi2 test was used to test for relationships between variables, and the p significance level was set at 0.05. Results: The average age of the mothers surveyed was 27.67 years. 65.69% (n = 247) of mothers lived in urban areas and 55.85% (n = 210) were Muslim. 56.38% (n = 212) were living common-law and 34.04% (n = 128) were poor. Secondary-school mothers (44.42%, n = 167) and housewives (53.72%, n = 202) were in the majority. Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) was correctly defined by 79.26% (n = 298) of mothers and actually practised in 24.20% (n = 91) of cases. The main source of information was a health professional in 75.36% (n = 304) of cases. Among the 285 mothers who practised mixed breastfeeding, lack of time (33.33%) was the main reason. They acknowledged having given water (100%), corn porridge (75.09%) and/or artificial milk (24.91%) before the first 6 months of life. The average time for introducing water was 2.2 months, and for porridge/formula 2.79 months. More than half the mothers (55.05%) said they did not know their infants’ weaning age. Factors positively influencing the use of EBF were age under 29, residence in an urban area, primiparity, having been informed about AME by a health professional, and being a housewife or shopkeeper (p Conclusion: Mothers’ level of knowledge was heterogeneous but insufficient overall. An effective system of information and education from pregnancy to the first six months of life is needed to promote breastfeeding. 展开更多

With the continuous development of artificial intelligence and natural language processing technologies, traditional retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) techniques face numerous challenges in document answer precision and similarity measurement. This study, set against the backdrop of the shipping industry, combines top-down and bottom-up schema design strategies to achieve precise and flexible knowledge representation. The research adopts a semi-structured approach, innovatively constructing an adaptive schema generation mechanism based on reinforcement learning, which models the knowledge graph construction process as a Markov decision process. This method begins with general concepts, defining foundational industry concepts, and then delves into abstracting core concepts specific to the maritime domain through an adaptive pattern generation mechanism that dynamically adjusts the knowledge structure. Specifically, the study designs a four-layer knowledge construction framework, including the data layer, modeling layer, technology layer, and application layer. It draws on a mutual indexing strategy, integrating large language models and traditional information extraction techniques. By leveraging self-attention mechanisms and graph attention networks, it efficiently extracts semantic relationships. The introduction of logic-form-driven solvers and symbolic decomposition techniques for reasoning significantly enhances the model’s ability to understand complex semantic relationships. Additionally, the use of open information extraction and knowledge alignment techniques further improves the efficiency and accuracy of information retrieval. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method not only achieves significant performance improvements in knowledge graph retrieval within the shipping domain but also holds important theoretical innovation and practical application value. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, with 60.5 million affected individuals,of whom 11 million are from India.Due to its asymptomatic nature, the disease largely remains underdiagnosed or diagnosed in advanced stages, where little can be done to salvage functional vision. The literature suggests that a lack of knowledge is one of the reasons for its grave consequences.Assessment of awareness is the first step in planning management.Several studies have been conducted in the Indian community, but data from healthcare providers, who play a significant role in educating the masses directly or indirectly, are limited.AIM To identify awareness, knowledge, and attitudes about glaucoma among healthcare workers in a tertiary center in India.METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted at a tertiary care institute in Eastern India.Data were collected from 423 participants by systematic stratified sampling after Institutional Ethics Committee approval via a pretested,self-designed,semistructured,validated questionnaire.Statistical analyses were performed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences Software v22.0.Continuous variables are expressed as the means±SD for parametric values and medians with interquartile ranges for nonparametric values. The associations between the variables were studied via multivariate linear and logistic regression.P<0.05 was considered statistically significant.RESULTS Most respondents were 20–30 years old(n=345,81.6%).The knowledge regarding glaucoma was good, and almost 56.3%of the participants gained knowledge from their medical training. The majority were aware that it has a familial predisposition and is secondary to high intraocular pressure, leading to irreversible peripheral vision loss.Only 42%knew about the life-long requirements of treatment. The resident group scored highest on knowledgeand attitude-based questions, whereas the faculty group scored highest on practice-based questions.Although 62%of the nursing staff had good attitude scores, their knowledge and practice scores were lower. The occupation group response difference was statistically significant(P<0.05)for all the knowledge-based questions.CONCLUSION Although the majority of healthcare providers are aware of glaucoma, there is a dearth of knowledge about treatment modalities.Education via seminars and media can improve their knowledge, attitudes, and practices. 展开更多

In the context of the“Two New”initiatives, high school mathematics instruction still grapples with three interlocking problems:knowledge fragmentation, limited cultivation of higher-order thinking, and weak alignment among teaching, learning, and assessment. To counter these challenges,we propose an Inquiry-Construction Double-Helix model that uses a domain-specific knowledge graph as its cognitive spine. The model interweaves two mutually reinforcing strands-student-driven inquiry and systematic knowledge construction-into a double-helix trajectory analogous to DNA replication. The Inquiry Strand is launched by authentic,situation-based tasks that shepherd students through the complete cycle:question→hypothesis→verification→reflection. The Construction Strand simultaneously externalizes, restructures, and internalizes core disciplinary concepts via visual, hierarchical knowledge graphs.Within the flow of a lesson, the two strands alternately dominate and scaffold each other, securing the co-development of conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and mathematical literacy.Empirical evidence demonstrates that this model significantly enhances students’systematic knowledge integration,problem-solving transfer ability, and core mathematical competencies, offering a replicable and operable teaching paradigm and practical pathway for deepening high school mathematics classroom reform. 展开更多

Water scarcity poses a significant challenge globally, with South Africa exemplifying the severe socio-economic and environmental impacts of limited water access.Despite advances in modern water management systems, the integration of indigenous knowledge(IK)into formal frameworks remains underutilized. This study systematically reviews the role of indigenous water conservation practices in South Africa, analyzing over 50 high-quality sources using the PRISMA methodology. The findings highlight the effectiveness of IK in addressing water scarcity through techniques such as rainwater harvesting, terracing, and wetland management, which are low-cost,environmentally sustainable, and deeply rooted in cultural practices.Indigenous methods also enhance climate resilience by enabling communities to adapt to droughts and floods through practices such as weather prediction and adaptive farming techniques.Furthermore, these practices foster social inclusivity and community empowerment, ensuring equitable water access and intergenerational knowledge transfer. The study underscores the potential of integrating IK with modern water technologies to create holistic solutions that are scalable, sustainable, and aligned with South Africa’s goal of achieving water security by 2030.Policy recommendations emphasize the need for institutional support, data collection, and financial incentives to sustain and mainstream indigenous approaches.By bridging the gap between traditional and contemporary systems, this research provides a roadmap for leveraging diverse knowledge systems to address water scarcity and build resilient communities. 展开更多

The aim of this research was to assess the knowledge and practices of radiological versus non-radiological health professionals on the optimisation of radiation protection in paediatric and adult radiology in BUKAVU hospitals. To achieve this, we surveyed a convenience sample of 73 health professionals including 23 radiologists working in the hospitals surveyed to assess knowledge and level of implementation of radiation protection principles. Also, physical parameters were taken for the calculation of entry doses in paediatric and adult radiology units for comparison with the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) diagnostic reference levels. After analysis of the data, the following was found: although radiologists have sufficient knowledge of radiation protection standards, technical constraints do not allow them to observe the dose limitation principle recommended by the ICRP. This is why several radiology departments, including those of the HPGRB, the MWANZI clinic and CIRIRI hospital, have proved to be very irradiating for children. However, radiologists and non-radiologists alike do not contribute positively to the optimisation of radiation protection in the diagnostic use of X-rays. Therefore, support in the implementation of radiation protection principles and regular monitoring of the units as well as replacement of non-standard equipment is necessary to promote patient and environmental safety by optimising radiation protection. 展开更多

BACKGROUND: Administering oxygen therapy(OT) has an essential role in preventing/managing hypoxemia in both acute and chronic conditions. It should be adjusted to achieve the normal oxygen saturation of 94%–98% in most cases. This study aims to evaluate knowledge, attitude and practice(KAP) of nurses, paramedics, emergency medical technicians(EMTs) and Emergency Medical Services(EMS) physicians working at emergency departments(ED) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, a structured questionnaire was used to assess KAP related to OT of nurses, paramedics, EMTs and EMS physicians currently working at an ED of a tertiary care hospital. Knowledge and attitude were assessed using a Likert scale from 1–5, whereas practice was assessed as a yes/no categorical variable.RESULTS: A total of 444 emergency health-care workers(EHCWs) participated, of which 225(50.7%) were male, with the majority(77%) in the age group of 20–35 years. Over half of the sample were nurses(266; 59.9%). The mean score for knowledge about OT was 5.51±1.45, attitude was 26.31±3.17 and for practices 4.55±1.76. The main factors which were associated with poor KAP were workload and lack of local guidelines. The distribution of overall practice score was signifi cantly better among paramedics – nurses group and EMT – nurses group.CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that there is a gap in EHCWs' KAP, particularly regarding when to provide OT to a patient. This gap can affect patients' safety. Extensive educational and training programs about OT are needed to raise awareness among health-care providers. 展开更多

To assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices(KAP) on Zika virus infection among pregnant women in Brunei Darussalam by a cross-sectional survey. Methods: Between February and June 2017, we recruited 234 pregnant women from all government healthcare centres at Brunei-Muara district, using a modified systematic sampling approach. A pre-tested and self-administered questionnaire was used and data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics and multiple logistic regression analyses. Results: The study participants were mainly Malay(87.2%) and their mean age was 28.0 years. The median knowledge score was 13, out of a possible score of 28. Most participants(92.7%) knew that Zika virus was transmitted by mosquito bites whereas some(34.6%) knew that sexual transmission was also possible. Media(radio, television or newspapers) was the preferred source of updated information on Zika virus, followed by healthcare workers(44.0%), government announcements(43.2%), and social media(38.0%). Pregnant women who were 25 years old or older [Adj. OR=3.62(95% CI: 1.57, 9.51)], not Malays [Adj. OR=3.32(95% CI: 1.35, 8.55)], and had an average monthly household income of more than BND $3 000 [Adj. OR=4.06(95% CI: 1.81, 19.44)] were more likely to score higher for knowledge on Zika virus. The median prevention practice score was 23, out of a possible score of 36. Most participants reported wearing covering clothes(98.3%) and kept their living surroundings clean(99.6%). Most participants(88.0%) agreed that Zika is an important issue in their community. Conclusion: We found a lack of knowledge on Zika virus infection among pregnant women attending government maternal and child healthcare centres in Brunei Darussalam, in particular that Zika virus can be sexually transmitted. Such information could be well disseminated at the healthcare centre level. Health literacy studies should be conducted to understand the facilitators and barriers of KAP on Zika virus infection among pregnant women. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Cerebrovascular disease(CVD)poses a serious threat to human health and safety. Thus, developing a reasonable exercise program plays an important role in the long-term recovery and prognosis for patients with CVD.Studies have shown that predictive nursing can improve the quality of care and that the information–knowledge–attitude–practice(IKAP)nursing model has a positive impact on patients who suffered a stroke.Few studies have combined these two nursing models to treat CVD.AIM To explore the effect of the IKAP nursing model combined with predictive nursing on the Fugl–Meyer motor function(FMA)score,Barthel index score, and disease knowledge mastery rate in patients with CVD.METHODS A total of 140 patients with CVD treated at our hospital between December 2019 and September 2021 were randomly divided into two groups, with 70 patients in each. The control group received routine nursing, while the observation group received the IKAP nursing model combined with predictive nursing. Both groups were observed for self-care ability, motor function, and disease knowledge mastery rate after one month of nursing.RESULTS There was no clear difference between the Barthel index and FMA scores of the two groups before nursing(P>0.05);however,their scores increased after nursing. This increase was more apparent in the observation group, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).The rates of disease knowledge mastery, timely medication, appropriate exercise, and reasonable diet were significantly higher in the observation group than in the control group(P<0.05).The satisfaction rate in the observation group(97.14%)was significantly higher than that in the control group(81.43%;P<0.05).CONCLUSION The IKAP nursing model, combined with predictive nursing,is more effective than routine nursing in the care of patients with CVD,and it can significantly improve the Barthel index and FMA scores with better knowledge acquisition,as well as produce high satisfaction in patients. Moreover, they can be widely used in the clinical setting. 展开更多

Objective: The prevalence of complementary and alternative medicine(CAM) usage among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM) in Indonesia is high. However, to date, little is known about why Indonesian T2DM patients choose CAM therapies, how their knowledge, attitude and practice(KAP) of CAM affects their choices, or how demographics correlate with patient choices. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the KAP and predictors of CAM usage in T2DM patients in Indonesia. Methods: This was an observational, cross-sectional study. Patients were interviewed using a questionnaire. Chi-square tests or Fisher’s exact tests were used to compare demographic and clinical data, as well as KAP assessments, between T2DM patients who use and do not use CAM. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to investigate predictors of CAM usage. Results: A total of 628 T2DM patients were enrolled in the study. CAM therapies were used by 341 patients(54.3%). The most common therapies were herbs and spiritual healing, used by 100.0% and 68.3% of CAM-using patients, respectively. CAM therapies were frequently recommended by family members(91.5%), and CAM users had significantly more knowledge and more positive attitudes toward CAM therapies than nonusers. Among users, 66% said they would not follow their healthcare providers’ instructions to not use CAM therapies, and 69.5% said they would not disclose their plan to use CAM therapies with their healthcare provider. Neither demographic nor clinical characteristics were associated with CAM use. The factors that best predicted the use of CAM therapies were their availability and low cost(odds ratio [OR] = 4.59;95% confidence interval [CI]: 3.01–7.01), the belief that CAM therapies were safe(OR = 2.04;95% CI: 1.40–2.95), the belief that CAM therapies could help with diabetes control(OR = 1.75;95% CI: 1.15–2.66), and the belief that CAM therapies could help maintain physical health(OR = 1.68;95% CI: 1.13–2.49).Conclusion: CAM therapy users were more knowledgeable and had more positive attitudes toward CAM,but most of them chose not to disclose their CAM use to their healthcare providers. CAM use in Indonesia was associated with its accessibility, affordability, safety and effectivity, but not with any demographic or clinical characteristics. This study provided new evidence and insights for nurses and physicians in Indonesia that will help to design educational programs about the safety and efficacy of CAM therapies. 展开更多

AIM: To investigate the knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) in prevention and control of liver fluke infection in northeast Thailand. METHODS: A descriptive KAP survey pertaining to liver fluke infection was carried out in June 2005 to October 2006 using structured questionnaires. Data were collected by questionnaires consisting of general parameters, knowledge, attitude, practice, and a history of participation in the prevention and control of liver fluke infection. RESULTS: A total of 1077 persons who were interviewed and completed the questionnaires were enrolled in the study. The majority were females (69.5%) and many of them were 15-20 years of age (37.26%). The questionnaires revealed that information resources on liver fluke infection included local public health volunteers (31.37%), public health officers (18.72%), televisions (14.38%), local heads of sub-districts (12.31%), doctors and nurses (9.18%), newspaper (5.72), intemets (5.37%), and others (12.95%). Fiftyfive point eleven percent of the population had a good level of liver fluke knowledge concerning the mode of disease transmission and 79.72% of the population had a good level of prevention and control knowledge with regards to defecation and consumption. The attitude and practice in liver fluke prevention and control were also at a good level with a positive awareness, participation, and satisfaction of 72.1% and 60.83% of the persons studied. However, good health behavior was found in 39.26% and 41.42% of the persons studied who had unhygienic defecation and ate raw cyprinoid's fish. The result also showed that 41.25% of the persons studied previously joined prevention and control campaigns. CONCLUSION: The persons studied have a high level of liver fluke knowledge and positive attitude. However, improvement is required regarding personal hygiene specifically with hygienic defecation and consumption of undercooked fish. 展开更多
