Upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) is an allotetraploid species originated from interspecific hybridization between AA-genome diploid (G. arboretum) and DD-genome diploid (G. raimondii) (Wendel et al., 1992). Cotton fibers are single-celled trichomes that emerge from the ovule epidermal cells. Indexed by the number of days post-anthesis (dpa), fiber morphogenesis includes four distinct but overlapping steps: initiation (0-3 dpa), elongation (3-20 dpa), secondary cell wall thickening (15-45 dpa) and maturation (40-60 dpa) (Yang et al., 2008, Du et al., 2013). The efficiency and duration of each morphogenesis stage is important to the quality attributes of the mature fiber. Cell elongation is critical for fiber length, whereas secondary cell wall thickening is important for fiber fineness and strength (Meinert and Delmer, 1977). 展开更多

Neurodevelopmental processes represent a finely tuned interplay between genetic and environmental factors,shaping the dynamic landscape of the developing brain.A major component of the developing brain that enables this dynamic is the white matter(WM),known to be affected in neurodevelopmental disorders(NDDs)(Rokach et al.,2024).WM formation is mediated by myelination,a multifactorial process driven by neuro-glia interactions dependent on proper neuronal functionality(Simons and Trajkovic,2006).Another key aspect of neurodevelopmental abnormalities involves neuronal dynamics and function,with recent advances significantly enhancing our understanding of both neuronal and glial mitochondrial function(Devine and Kittler,2018;Rojas-Charry et al.,2021).Energy homeostasis in neurons,attributed largely to mitochondrial function,is critical for proper functionality and interactions with oligodendrocytes(OLs),the cells forming myelin in the brain’s WM.We herein discuss the interplay between these processes and speculate on potential dysfunction in NDDs. 展开更多

There has been a century-long debate in evolutionary developmental biology about whether the ancestral metazoan was a larva or an adult. Two competing hypotheses have been proposed: the ‘‘terminal addition''theory, which assumes the primitiveness of larvae, and the‘‘intercalation'' theory, which assumes the primitiveness of adults. A consensus has not yet been reached, but the‘‘terminal addition'' theory appears to be more widely accepted. However, in contrast to the majority of larvae among living metazoans, all currently known fossil invertebrate embryos such as Markuelia and Olivooides are direct developers. Here, we describe Eolarva kuanchuanpuensis gen. et sp. nov., the oldest known larva, from the early Cambrian(*535 Ma) of South China. Eolarva kuanchuanpuensis lacks a mouth or any other type of feeding apparatus, which is non-feeding or lecithotrophic.It possesses a distinct body plan and might represent a cnidarian-grade animal. This is the first fossil evidence indicating that indirect development is the plesiomorphy of metazoan development. 展开更多

We present some known-key distinguishers for a type-1 Feistel scheme with a permutation as the round function. To be more specific, the 29-round known-key truncated differential distinguishers are given for the 256-bit type-1 Feistel scheme with an SP (substitution-permutation) round function by using the rebound attack, where the S-boxes have perfect differential and linear properties and the linear diffusion layer has a maximum branch number. For two 128-bit versions, the distinguishers can be applied on 25- round structures. Based on these distinguishers, we construct near-collision attacks on these schemes with MMO (Matyas- Meyer-Oseas) and MP (Miyaguchi-Preneel) hashing modes, and propose the 26-round and 22-round near-collision attacks for two 256-bit schemes and two 128-bit schemes, respectively. We apply the near-collision attack on MAME and obtain a 26-round near-collision attack. Using the algebraic degree and some integral properties, we prove the correctness of the 31-round known-key integral distinguisher proposed by Sasaki et al. We show that if the round function is a permutation, the integral distinguisher is suitable for a type-1 Feistel scheme of any size. 展开更多
