Many of these researches focus primarily on Jewish or Italians, but rarely address at Italian Jews as a whole, and, in their relation with Italian American and Jews. One of the reasons of this paucity of studies, might be the little number of Italian Jews who immigrated to the United States, especially in New York in the 1930s and 1940s, that drove several scholars not to pay really attention to this tiny group in ignoring their presence. Thus, this article aims to investigate through some memoirs, interviews and autobiographies the life of Italian Jews who were living in New York and the Metropolitan area during and after War World II, with particular emphasis to those who were born there in these years and their formation of an American identity. This essay will also clarify an Italian Jewish identity--which made Italian the role of memory and "nostalgia" in an Italian identity--above all Jews a unique group and a minority within a minority.展开更多

In addition to creating different images and ethnic representations, Manea and Codrescu's memoirs focus on portraying the image of the Jew, this being actually the very representation of otherness. The term "stranger" or "foreigner" is a generic one, including, irrespective of its ethnic component, all those individuals who guide their life according to a system of values which is different from the one accepted by or imposed on all the people of a country. According to this very pattern the writers taken into discussion in this paper might be considered to be the subject of a double banishment, their state of alienation being the direct result of them belonging not only to the Jewish ethic minority, but also to the very category of exiles. The texts placed under close scrutiny in this research, namely The Hooligan's Return (2003), belonging to Norman Mane, and An lnvohmtary Genius in America's Shoes (And What HappenedAfierwards) (200 l), written by Andrei Codrescu map the mobility of these two writers traversing vast geographical and cultural territories, as testimonies of their nomadic existence, having the express purpose of registering the polymorphous development of their identity and their very capacity of projecting two multi-faceted personalities展开更多

Research in recent years has shown us that smoking and second hand smoking can cause many diseases1. As a result of the understanding of the results of smoking, the house of legislator in Israel decided to legislate a law that people under the age of 18 cannot smoke and, a couple of years later, it decided to ban smoking in public places. The problem begins when the law is affecting the person's autonomy and the person's culture. More than four decades ago when the smoking habit began in Israel, no one knew what the influence would be. Now, although that information is available, the orthodox community in Israel is not exposed to the knowledge. Smoking in this community begins from Purima or from the Bar-Mitzvah3 and from the will of the young orthodox to rebel. This law raises a question: Is it ethical to deprive the young orthodox of the right to smoke? Alternatively, is there a better way to stop the orthodox from smoking than only the regulation? In this paper, the author will try to show that regulation alone will not help in the orthodox community, and we need to think on more options to make the orthodox more informed to smoking problems. The author thinks that the best way will be to educate the orthodox community from young age.展开更多

They are either assimilated by other strong nations or shut up deep in the mountains, living a slash and burn way of living. Even if there are some ancient nations that have survived and made some progress, they did so with great difficulty. Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, Greece and Persia all are proud of their glorious past and are ambitious for national revival. But the path is not smooth. The Jewish nation, however, is an exception. What is the secret of its survival and seemingly sudden revival?展开更多

The first half of the paper traces the history of the idea from the Biblical notion of human beings created "in the image of God" through medieval interpretations of that phrase, and the implications of those traditions for conceptualizing Jewish-gentile relations, and in particular, the "humanity" of gentiles. The second half of the paper treats a very different construction of Jewish-gentile relations by looking at the phenomenon of inter-cultural adaptation and exchange as it has shaped Jewish diasporic culture; this discussion focuses upon one extreme case of Jewish-gentile syncretism, the medieval Kaifeng Jewish community in China.展开更多
