The attack by the Islamist group Hamas against Israel on October 7,2023,and the immediate Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip, with the thousands of deaths and the devastation that we are witnessing daily in one of the most densely populated areas of the world, have pushed further away the prospect of a solution of coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians through the establishment of two peoples-two states,a solution that is viewed favorably in non-holy Palestinian and Israeli circles by many Western countries and by the Holy See.To complicate the socio-political picture,we recall that in the last decades,in the territories occupied by Israel in the West Bank, there has been an incessant work of human settlements and the construction of roads and infrastructures, facilitated by Israel’s rapid population growth.According to many analysts,in order to dominate the Palestinians,Israel is now implementing a real system of apartheid that is spreading from the occupied territories to the Palestinian Arab citizens of Israel.Based on the available data, which are not always reliable for political and organizational reasons of the existing statistical systems, this study attempts to grasp the strategic role that differential demography has had and continues to have in this complex conflictual reality. 展开更多

Background:This study aims to investigate the underlying mechanisms between parental marital conflict and adolescent short video dependence by constructing a chain mediation model, focusing on the mediating roles of experiential avoidance and emotional disturbance(anxiety, depression, and stress). Methods:Conducted in January 2025,the research recruited 4125 adolescents from multiple Chinese provinces through convenience sampling;after data cleaning,3957 valid participants(1959 males,1998 females)were included.Using a cross-sectional design, measures included parental marital conflict, experiential avoidance, anxiety, depression, stress, and short video dependence. Results:Pearson correlation analysis revealed significant positive correlations among all variables.Mediation analysis using the SPSS PROCESS macro showed that parental marital conflict directly predicted short video dependence(β=0.269,p<0.001),and also significantly predicted experiential avoidance(β=0.519,p<0.001),anxiety(β=0.072,p<0.001),depression(β=0.067,p<0.001),and stress(β=0.048,p<0.05).Experiential avoidance further predicted anxiety(β=0.521,p<0.001),depression(β=0.489,p<0.001),stress(β=0.408,p<0.001),and short video dependence(β=0.244,p<0.001).While both anxiety(β=0.050,p<0.05)and depression(β=0.116,p<0.001)positively predicted short video dependence, stress did not(β=0.019,p=0.257).Overall,experiential avoidance, anxiety, depression, and stress significantly mediated the relationship between parental marital conflict and short video dependence. Conclusion:These findings confirm that parental marital conflict not only directly influences adolescent short video dependence but also operates through a chain mediation pathway involving experiential avoidance and emotional disturbance, highlighting central psychological mechanisms and providing theoretical support for integrated mental health and behavioral interventions. 展开更多

Ukraine,as one of the world’s largest agricultural producers and exporters, plays a critical role in global food security. It is essential to understand the spatiotemporal dynamics and drivers of productive cropland in Ukraine, particularly in the context of the 2022 Russia-Ukraine conflict. We provide the first comprehensive assessment of both conflict-and non-conflict-related factors that influenced the distribution and productivity of Ukraine’s cropland from 2013 to 2023.In addition,we propose a novel method using machine learning models to isolate the impact of conflict on cropland. Our findings reveal that, prior to the conflict, the spatial pattern of Ukraine’s mean cultivation rate was primarily shaped by natural factors—such as climate, soil properties, and elevation—whereas socio-economic factors(e.g.,GDP and population size)exerted a weaker influence.Interannual dynamics in productive cropland area were largely driven by climate variability. The onset of conflict in 2022 dramatically altered this landscape, with nearly half of the cropland grid cells experiencing a conflict-induced reduction.Notably, almost half of the interannual reduction in productive cropland in 2022 was attributed to climate change.Remarkably,in 2023,the return of displaced populations and favorable climatic conditions in many oblasts contributed to a positive trend in cropland reclamation.Despite this, the total area of productive cropland in 2023 remained below expected levels, due to ongoing conflict and localized droughts. Finally,we highlight the urgent need to adopt a two-pronged approach that addresses both the immediate impacts of conflict and the ongoing threats posed by climate change to ensure the resilience and sustainability of agricultural systems in post-conflict areas. 展开更多

Systematically analyzing the impact mechanisms of policy on Land Use Conflict(LUC)is crucial for constructing effective conflict mitigation strategies. However, previous research on how policy influences LUC remains relatively limited.Focusing on the indirect driving role of policy on LUC,this study proposed County Development Level(CDL)under Major Function Oriented Zone Planning(MFOZP)guidance as an intermediary variable, bridging the implicit influence of MFOZP and the explicit changes in LUC.Using the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei(BTH)region in China as a case study,we analyzed the spatio-temporal evolution characteristics of LUC and CDL for the periods 2000-2010 and 2010-2020,before and after MFOZP implementation.Panel models and Geographically Weighted Regression(GWR)were employed to explore the mechanism by which CDL influences LUC under MFOZP guidance. The results show that:1)MFOZP implementation effectively alleviates land use pressure from regional development, with LUC continuously declining at a rate of 2.41%,while CDL exhibits slight growth(3.84%),during 2010-2020.2)Under MFOZP guidance,CDL reduces pressure on Land Use Structure Conflict(LUSC)and Land Use Process Conflict(LUPC),enhances its inhibitory effect on Land Use Function Conflict(LUFC),and significantly contributes to LUC coordination, with notable spatial heterogeneity.3)The coupling relationship between CDL and LUC has improved post-implementation.Based on this, tailored LUC coordination strategies are proposed for different functional zones. This study confirms the effectiveness of MFOZP in coordinating LUC and provides a scientific reference for LUC research under policy frameworks and the governance of LUC in the BTH region. 展开更多

The relation between conflict and governance has been dominated by type of government rather than by system of government. With increasing conflict in countries with ethnic and religious diversity, the debate has gradually shifted to understand better the link between conflict and system of government. There is a growing evidence that suggests federal system performs better than unitary system in managing diversity and reducing conflict.Decentralization is even seen to be more effective than federal system not only in managing diversity and reducing conflict but also in delivering public goods. This article provides an account of evolution of system of government in South Sudan. It finds a clear association of centralized unitary system with violent conflict and a relative peace during period of decentralized government or federal system.A decentralized federal system may be appropriate for South Sudan in managing diversity and mitigating conflict.Despite the popular demand by their citizens for a federal system to manage diversity and reduce violent conflict, the ruling elites in the post-independent South Sudan adopted instead an autocratic centralized unitary system that contributed among other factors to the persistent violent conflicts, erosion of social cohesion, and rising mistrust between state and citizens and between and among the communities of South Sudan. 展开更多

Globally, human, livestock, and wildlife interactions have been reported to result in innumerable forms of conflict and consequences. The most notable consequences are on the environment and human health, among others. The least developed countries,Tanzania inclusive, due to their bio-geographical and social characteristics, are mostly reported to register such consequences, which have sometimes led to zoonotic diseases due to the existence of risk factors. The factors include the growth of the human population, absence of infrastructural capacity, and skilled manpower to effectively deal with disease outbreaks and livestock keeping associated lifestyles. This article employs a documentary research method to analyse the human-wildlife conflict(HWC)and its consequences in Tanzania. It further assesses the potential of the One Health approach to curb the consequences of HWC following the introduction of One Health Strategic Plan(2015–2020).This article, therefore, analyses the potential for One Health approach to minimize the undesirable impacts of human, livestock, and wildlife interactions on health. This approach underscores the need for collaborative working efforts involving human, livestock, wildlife, and environmental health professionals and the need for a good understanding of the consequences of the interactions towards the realisation of optimum health for people, animals, and our environment. 展开更多

With the increasing complexity of social public affairs,cross-departmental collaborative governance has become an important model of modern administrative management. However, conflicts of interest frequently occur during the collaboration process, which are mainly reflected in resource allocation, goal differences, and power games. These conflicts are caused by factors such as cultural differences within departments, inconsistent performance evaluation systems, and personal interests of department members. To address these issues,it is necessary to design multi-level integration mechanisms, including establishing stable communication channels and unified goals and evaluation systems.Successful integration cases in various fields, such as food safety supervision, environmental protection, and urban transportation governance, show that effective integration mechanisms need to establish institutionalized communication carriers, form a consensus target system, and design guarantee measures with both incentives and constraints.Although current research has achieved certain results, there are still limitations, such as insufficient attention to underdeveloped regions,a lack of consideration of cultural factors, and a narrow focus on internal government collaboration.Future research can explore differentiated integration models, introduce third-party assessment institutions, and strengthen research on the participation mechanism of enterprises and social organizations. 展开更多

The Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs)represent a solemn commitment by United Nations member states, but achieving them faces numerous challenges, particularly armed conflicts. Here,we analyzed the impact of armed conflict on SDG progress and its driving mechanism through causal inference methods and machine learning technique. The results show that between 2000 and 2021,armed conflicts slowed overall SDG progress by 3.43%,equivalent to a setback of 18 years. The Middle East was the most affected region, with a 6.10%slowdown in progress. The impact of different types of conflict varies across specific goals:interstate conflicts primarily affect SDG 5(Gender Equality)and SDG 7(Affordable and Clean Energy),while intrastate conflicts have a larger impact on SDG 4(Quality Education)and SDG 9(Industry,Innovation and Infrastructure).Additionally,SDG 15(Life on Land)is severely affected by both types of conflict, with long-term consequences. As armed conflicts increase, the development progress would regress rapidly in a non-linear manner. To achieve the SDGs by 2030,it is crucial not only to prevent conflicts but also to proactively address and mitigate their impacts on development. 展开更多

Human-elephant conflict(HEC)poses a major socio-ecological challenge across elephant range states.Since 2015,the National Forest Ecosystem Research Station of China based in Xishuangbanna has developed the Elephant Early-warning System(EEWS),a novel approach that has demonstrably reduced the risk of HEC incidents-particularly those involving direct encounters between people and elephants.By dynamically maintaining safety buffers, this system safeguards endangered elephants while mitigating human safety risks during livelihood activities and ensuring uninterrupted elephant movement.Building upon the C4ISR framework(Command,Control,Communications,Computers,Intelligence,Surveillance, and Reconnaissance),EEWS integrates key technological and institutional innovations-including the widespread adoption of mobile internet, deployment of camera traps, use of drones, and cross-sectoral governance reforms. The EEWS’s conceptual framework and technical architecture have been already recognized by local government and are now being scaled up from Xishuangbanna to the entire Asian elephant range in China, establishing a replicable“China model”for achieving harmonious human-elephant coexistence. This study reviews the conceptual foundations, development, and field implementation of EEWS,and offers recommendations to guide future refinement and broader application. 展开更多
