Purpose: This study verified the effects of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), which can be worn during walking and exercise, in elderly individuals with late-stage knee pain who exercise regularly. Methods: Thirty-two late-stage elderly individuals were evaluated for knee pain during rest, walking, and program exercises, with and without TENS. Gait analysis was performed using an IoT-based gait analysis device to examine the effects of TENS-induced analgesia on gait. Results: TENS significantly reduced knee pain during rest, walking, and programmed exercises, with the greatest analgesic effect observed during walking. The greater the knee pain without TENS, the more significant the analgesic effect of TENS. A comparison of gait parameters revealed a significant difference only in the gait cycle time, with a trend towards faster walking with TENS;however, the effect was limited. Conclusion: TENS effectively relieves knee pain in late-stage elderly individuals and can be safely applied during exercise. Pain management using TENS provides important insights into the implementation of exercise therapy in this age group. 展开更多

With the development of medical sensors and IoT, personalized service assisted elder and patient living is a critical service in IoT-based healthcare application. However, the scale and complexity of personalized service is increasing because of ubiquitous deployment of various kinds of medical sensors, which cause response time increase and resource waste. Therefore, leveraging the advantage of complex event processing(CEP) in data stream processing, we propose a hierarchical fog-cloud computing CEP architecture for personalized service to accelerate response time and reduce resource waste. Firstly, we introduce the proposed architecture, which includes sensor layer, fog layer and cloud layer. Secondly, we propose a series of optimizations for the architecture, there are a partitioning and clustering approach and a communication and parallel processing policy to optimize the fog and cloud computing. Finally, we implement a prototype system based on the architecture named Fog Cep Care. Experimental result shows that Fog Cep Care is superior to the traditional IoT-based healthcare application. 展开更多

Trajectory of Walking Function in Late-Stage Older Individuals Managed with a Regular Exercise Program: A 5-Year Longitudinal Tracking with an IoT Gait Analysis System Using Accelerometers

Purpose: This study focused on maintaining and improving the walking function of late-stage older individuals while longitudinally tracking the effects of regular exercise programs in a day-care service specialized for preventive care over 5 years, using detailed gait function measurements with an accelerometer-based system. Methods: Seventy individuals (17 male and 53 female) of a daycare service in Tokyo participated in a weekly exercise program, meeting 1 - 2 times. The average age of the participants at the start of the program was 81.4 years. Gait function, including gait speed, stride length, root mean square (RMS) of acceleration, gait cycle time and its standard deviation, and left-right difference in stance time, was evaluated every 6 months. Results: Gait speed and stride length improved considerably within six months of starting the exercise program, confirming an initial improvement in gait function. This suggests that regular exercise programs can maintain or improve gait function even age groups that predictably have a gradual decline in gait ability due to enhanced age. In the long term, many indicators tended to approach baseline values. However, the exercise program seemingly counteracts age-related changes in gait function and maintains a certain level of function. Conclusions: While a decline in gait ability with aging is inevitable, establishing appropriate exercise habits in late-stage older individuals may contribute to long-term maintenance of gait function. 展开更多

It is urgent to effectively improve the production efficiency in the running process of manufacturing systems through a new generation of information technology.According to the current growing trend of the internet of things(IOT)in the manufacturing industry,aiming at the capacitor manufacturing plant,a multi-level architecture oriented to IOT-based manufacturing environment is established for a flexible flow-shop scheduling system.Next,according to multi-source manufacturing information driven in the manufacturing execution process,a scheduling optimization model based on the lot-streaming strategy is proposed under the framework.An improved distribution estimation algorithm is developed to obtain the optimal solution of the problem by balancing local search and global search.Finally,experiments are carried out and the results verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approach. 展开更多

Aiming to meet the growing demand for observation and analysis in power systems that based on Internet of Things(IoT),machine learning technology has been adopted to deal with the data-intensive power electronics applications in IoT.By feeding previous power electronic data into the learning model,accurate information is drawn,and the quality of IoT-based power services is improved.Generally,the data-intensive electronic applications with machine learning are split into numerous data/control constrained tasks by workflow technology.The efficient execution of this data-intensive Power Workflow(PW)needs massive computing resources,which are available in the cloud infrastructure.Nevertheless,the execution efficiency of PW decreases due to inappropriate sub-task and data placement.In addition,the power consumption explodes due to massive data acquisition.To address these challenges,a PW placement method named PWP is devised.Specifically,the Non-dominated Sorting Differential Evolution(NSDE)is used to generate placement strategies.The simulation experiments show that PWP achieves the best trade-off among data acquisition time,power consumption,load distribution and privacy preservation,confirming that PWP is effective for the placement problem. 展开更多

Tailoring atomically dispersed single-atom catalyst(Fe-SAC)holding well-defined coordination structure(Fe-N_(4))along with precise control over morphology is a critical challenge.Herein,we propose a novel acid-amine coupling reaction between metalchelated ionic liquid([1-(3-aminopropyl)3-methylimidazolium tetrachloroferrate(III)][APIM]+[FeCl_(4)]−)and carboxylic groups of carbon allotropes(C=GO,CNT,CNF,and vX-72)to precisely immobilize Fe-N_(x) sites.Out of designed single-atom catalyst(IL-Fe-SAC-C),Fe-N_(4) on graphene(IL-Fe-SAC-Gr)delivered superior oxygen reduction reaction(ORR)activity by holding higher halfwave potential of 0.882 V versus RHE in 1.0 M KOH akin to Pt/C(0.878 V vs.RHE)and surpassing recently reported M–N–C catalysts with superior ethanol tolerance.Thanks to higher graphitization degree,enhanced surface characteristics,and richness in high-density Fe-N_(4) sites of IL-Fe-SAC-Gr confirmed by XPS,X-ray absorption spectroscopy(XAS),and HAADF analysis.The IL-Fe-SAC-Gr catalyst-coated cathode on testing in flexible direct ethanol fuel cells(f-DEFC)delivered higher peak power density of 18mWcm^(−2) by outperforming Pt/C-based cathode by 3.5 times as a result of excellent ethanol tolerance.Further,the developed f-DEFCsuccessfully powered the Internet of Things(IoT)-based health monitoring system.This method demonstrates novel strategy to tailor high-performance single-atom(Fe-SAC-C)sites on desired morphologies to meet specific application requirements with feasibility and versatility. 展开更多

Construction failures caused by unforeseen circumstances, such as natural disasters, environmental degradation, and structural weaknesses, present significant challenges in achieving durability, safety, and sustainability. This research addresses these challenges through the development of advanced emergency rescue systems incorporating wood-derived nanomaterials and IoT-enabled Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) technologies. The use of nanocellulose which demonstrates outstanding mechanical capabilities and biodegradability alongside high resilience allowed developers to design modular rescue systems that function effectively even under challenging conditions while providing real-time failure protection. Experimental data from testing showed that the replacement system strengthened load-bearing limits by 20% while enhancing impact tolerance by 30% and decreasing lifecycle carbon footprints by 60% against conventional methods. FEA results alongside dynamic simulations established that the system maintains its strength across seismic events and thermal variations and environmental conditions. SHM systems that leverage the Internet of Things Platform revealed 95% accuracy rates in detecting anomalies while improving response speed by 30% for predictive maintenance operations. The innovative solutions support the special issue’s direction to push structural transformation through durable designs and creative materials with preventive failure solutions. The proposed solutions work together toward creating resilient infrastructure systems which resist unexpected stressors and environmental damage. 展开更多

IoT based agriculture(Ag-IoT)is an emerging communication technology that is widely adopted by agricultural entrepreneurs and farmers to perform agricultural agro-chores in the farm to improve productivity,for better monitoring,and to reduce labor costs.However,the use of the Internet in Ag-IoT facilitates real-time functionality in an agriculture system,it can increase the risk of security breaches and cyber attacks that would cause the Ag-IoT system to malfunction and can affect its productivity.Ag-IoT is overlooked in cyber security parameters,which can have severe impacts on its trustworthiness and adoption by agricultural communities.To address this gap,this article presents a systematic study of the literature published between 2001 and 2023 that discusses advances in Ag-IoT technology.The subjects included in the study on Ag-IoT are emerging applications,different IoT architectures,suspected cyber attacks and cyber crimes,and challenges in incident response and digital forensics.The findings of this study encourage the reader to explore future potential research avenues related to the security risks and challenges of Ag-IoT,as well as the readiness for incident response and forensic investigation in the smart agricultural sector.The main conclusion of this study is that security must be ensured in Ag-IoT environments to offer uninterrupted services and also there is a need for forensic readiness for effective investigation in the event of unanticipated security incidents. 展开更多
