Population aging is one of the common challenges in the current world.As people age,the body’s tissues including cells,and molecules inevitably degrade,and their functions gradually decline,causing various age-related diseases like Alzheimer’s disease,osteoporosis,low immunity,glucose and lipid metabolism disorders,and cardiovascular diseases.With the continuous increase of the elderly population,the pressure on the medical industry is increasing.To lower the burden on the medical industry and increase the average age of the elderly,it is vital to explore effective anti-aging materials.Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma(Renshen),as a traditional and precious Chinese medicinal herb,is known as the“king of all herbs”.It is famous for its effects of“tonifying Qi,restoring pulse”(helping with the generation of Qi(the fundamental,vital energy that continuously flows within the body)and the circulation of blood)and strengthening the body,nourishing the spleen and lungs,generating fluids and nourishing blood,calming the mind and improving intelligence.Recently,its anti-aging effect has received increasing attention from modern scientific research.This study summarizes the pharmacological effects of the main active ingredients of Renshen(ginsenosides,polysaccharides,etc.)on resisting aging,including preventing neuroaging,suppressing skin aging,mitigating ovarian aging,inhibiting osteoporosis and arthritis,enhancing the immune system of the elderly,protecting the cardiovascular system,resisting aging-induced fatigue and exerting the anti-tumor effects.Through network pharmacology and molecular docking,the anti-aging active ingredients of Renshen were screened,and the key targets and pathways of anti-aging active ingredients in Renshen were determined.Using network pharmacology,totally 106 drug targets and 3,479 disease targets were screened,and 79 common targets between aging and Renshen were identified.Three core targets were identified in the PPI network,including TNF,AKT1,and IL-1β.Molecular docking was used to obtain further verification.This study emphasizes the potential of Renshen as a source of anti-aging activity,which can be developed into a novel drug for the treatment of age-related diseases. 展开更多

In clinical practice,antibiotics have historically been utilized for the treatment of pathogenic bacteria.However,the gradual emergence of antibiotic resistance among bacterial strains has posed a significant challenge to this approach.In 2022,Escherichia coli,a Gram-negative bacterium renowned for its widespread pathogenicity and high virulence,emerged as the predominant pathogenic bacterium in China.The rapid emergence of antibiotic-resistant E.coli strains has rendered antibiotics insufficient to fight E.coli infections.Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)has made remarkable contributions to the health of Chinese people for thousands of years,and its significant therapeutic effects have been proven in clinical practice.In this paper,we provide a comprehensive review of the advances and mechanisms of TCM and its active ingredients against antibiotic-resistant E.coli infections.First of all,this review introduces the classification,antibiotic resistance characteristics and mechanisms of E.coli.Then,the TCM formulas and extracts are listed along with their active ingredients against E.coli,including extraction solution,minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC),and the antibacterial mechanisms.In addition,there is growing evidence supporting the synergistic therapeutic strategy of combining TCM with antibiotics for the treatment of antibiotic-resistant E.coli infections,and we provide a summary of this evidence and its underlying mechanisms.In conclusion,we present a comprehensive review of TCM and highlight its potential and advantages in the prevention and treatment of E.coli infections.We hold the opinion that TCM will play an important role in global health,pharmaceutical development,and livestock farming in the future. 展开更多

Whey protein concentrate(WPC)via single or sequential enzymatic hydrolysis steps using either only Alcalase^(®)2.4 L(WPH-A)or Alcalase^(®)2.4 L followed by Flavourzyme^(®)500 L(WPH-AF)was investigated.Different bioactive properties of particular interest in the obtained hydrolysates were evaluated.Calcium-chelating capacity(Ca-CC)of the hydrolysates was optimized using response surface methodology to adjust the experimental conditions used for producing the calcium nano-compounds.Chelates with higher Ca-CC were obtained using the WPH-AF compared to WPH-A.Additionally,antihypertensive and antioxidant activities of both hydrolysates showed significant improvements when compared to WPC,and these capabilities remained stable after undergoing different heat treatments.Finally,both hydrolysates presented a cytoprotective effect in two cell lines,suggesting that these products may have positive effects against diseases associated with reactive oxygen species.The results obtained indicate that the WPHs produced herein could be used in the development of food formulations with potential health benefits. 展开更多

Cartilage injuries remain a significant therapeutic challenge due to cartilage's limited capacity for self-repair.Traditional treatment approaches for cartilage injuries,including surgical interventions,microfracture and autologous chondrocyte implantation,may alleviate symptoms but frequently present limitations such as surgical trauma,uncertain efficacy,and adverse effects.Active ingredients derived from traditional Chinese medicine(TCM),which possess anti-inflammatory,anti-apoptotic,proliferation-promoting,and differentiation-inducing properties,have emerged as a promising research focus for treating cartilage damage.However,clinical applications of TCM have been constrained by factors including low bioavailability,insufficient stability,and limited targeting capabilities.The integration of TCM active ingredients with biomaterials offers novel solutions to these challenges.This article examines the pathological foundations of cartilage injury,the mechanisms through which TCM active ingredients such as polysaccharides,flavonoids,terpenoids,aldehydes,polyphenols,and saponins address cartilage injury,and the therapeutic applications of TCM active ingredients combined with biomaterials.These biomaterial delivery systems encompass gels,nanomaterials,microspheres,and tissue scaffolds.Additionally,this article analyzes the challenges and potential development trajectories for combining TCM active ingredients with biomaterials in cartilage injury treatment,offering new perspectives for therapeutic intervention. 展开更多

To solve the problem of the lack of reference material(RM)for determination of allergenic ingredients in food,a RM of cashew nut powder was developed in the study.Cashew nut powder was prepared from cashew nut kernel by selecting,cleaning,crushing,n-hexane degreasing and sieving treatment.The reliability and traceability of RM was verified using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction(qPCR)and phylogenetic tree analysis.The cashew nut powder RM showed good homogeneity,and good stability under long-term storage at 4℃and short-term simulated transportation from-20 to 45℃.The RM was determined jointly by 8 collaborative laboratories,and the characteristic CT value was 24.732,and the extended uncertainty was 1.052%(k=2).The RM was applied to verify the amplification efficiency and the limit of detection for qPCR assay,and showed good applicability.The RM could be used for method validation and quality control,for the determination of allergenic ingredients in food mixed with trace amounts of cashew nut. 展开更多

Pigmented skin spots,a visible sign of aging,can significantly affect the appearance of facial skin.To elucidate their pathogenesis and support the development of novel cosmetic ingredients,this review summarizes the morphological characteristics of pigmented skin spots and the extrinsic and intrinsic factors contributing to their development.Additionally,it highlights the common cosmetic ingredients currently used for reducing hyperpigmentation.The relevant literature was collected by searching PubMed and Wanfang Data for studies focusing on pigmented spots and facial spots.Overall,the literature indicates that pigmented spots display distinct morphological characteristics,including specialized melanocyte dendrites,altered vascular architecture,abnormal keratinization,and immune cell infiltration.Mechanistically,their formation is driven by both extrinsic factors(e.g.,sun exposure,skin microbiota,and particulate matter)as well as intrinsic factors(e.g.,vascular abnormalities,chronic inflammation,and hormonal fluctuations).Thus,pigmented skin spots represent a complex biological system encompassing multiple types of cells and molecular mediators,regulated by diverse environmental and physiological factors.Given their intricate microenvironment conditions and multifactorial etiology,a systematic and comprehensive investigation of pigmented spots is warranted.Such research could inform the development of cosmetic ingredients with targeted and multitargeted actions,enabling the more effective reduction of pigmented skin spots. 展开更多

Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)has become an important treasure trove of natural resources for the development of new medicines due to their diverse compositions,significant therapeutic effects,and few side effects.The screening of active ingredients in TCM represents a crucial step in elucidating the material basis and mechanism of action of TCM.At present,efficient and precise molecular recognition techniques based on intermolecular interactions have been extensively employed for the identification of active ingredients in TCM.This paper presents a review of the fundamental principles underlying solution-phase/affinity ligand fishing,solid-phase/affinity ligand fishing,molecular imprinting and molecular docking techniques,with a particular focus on their applications in the screening of active ingredients in TCM.Furthermore,the paper compares the advantages and disadvantages of the various techniques and identifies the limitations of existing techniques.In conclusion,the paper identifies the prospective trajectory of molecular recognition techniques in the domain of TCM research.This paper not only provides theoretical references for the development of new methods of active ingredient screening but also helps to promote the modernization and internationalization of TCM. 展开更多

Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)has a long history and is widely used to prevent and treat various diseases.With the development of modern technology,an increasing number of active ingredients—such as curcumin,berberine,and baicalin—have been identified and validated within TCM.Concurrently,the emergence of nanotechnology has led to the discovery of numerous nanomedicines based on the self-assembly of active ingredients from TCM.Polymer materials can enhance the bioavailability of these active compounds and reduce their toxic side effects.Moreover,compared to synthetic polymers,natural polymer materials offer advantages such as non-toxicity and high biosafety when used in drug delivery systems.However,natural polymers tend to be unstable and are easily influenced by environmental factors such as temperature,humidity,and pH,which complicates quality control.Additionally,the cost of obtaining natural polymer materials remains high.This article summarizes and analyzes 232 pieces of the research studies on self-assembled polymer materials via noncovalent interactions,including hydrogen bonding,π-πinteractions,hydrophobic interactions,and electrostatic interactions.The review primarily focuses on the active ingredients derived from TCM and provides a concise overview of future directions for polymer materials,including controlled drug delivery,targeted disease treatment,clinical translation,and green synthesis methods. 展开更多

Establishment of a Multiplex PCR System for Detecting Transgenic Ingredients from Citrus 被引量:1

[Objective] This study aimed to establish a multiplex PCR system for de- tecting transgenic ingredients from Citrus. [Method] Based on the pBI121 plasmid sequences published in GenBank and actin gene sequence of Citrus, the primers specific to CaMV35S promoter, NOS promoter, NOS terminator and actin gene were designed, to establish a multiple PCR system which could detect four types of sequences. In addition, orthogonal tests were performed to determine the optimal concentrations of all the components in PCR reaction system, as well as the optimal PCR cycle parameters. [Result] The optimal PCR reaction system should contain 2.5μl of 10xPCR buffer, 2.0μl of MgCI2 (25 mmol/L), 2.0 μl of dNTP mixture (2.5 mmol/L of each dNTP), 1.0 μl of actin gene primers (10μmol/L), 1.0μl of 35S promoter primers (10 μmol/L), 1.5 μl of NOS promoter primers (10 μmol/L) and 0.5 μl of NOS terminator primers (10μmol/L), 0.1 μg of template DNA, 1.25 U of Taq DNA polymerase; ddH20 was added to the total reaction system of 25μl. The PCR reaction program consisted of pre-denaturing at 94℃ for 5 min; 31 cycles of denaturing at 94℃ for 30 s, annealing at 64.1℃ for 45 s and extension at 72℃ for 50 s; final extension at 72℃ for 10 min. The reaction system optimized with the orthogonal tests could detect as less as 0.1% transgenic component in the tested samples. [Conclusion] The MPCR detection system established in this study can meet the requirements in theory for detecting the genetically modified ingredients in Citrus or the deep-processed products. 展开更多

However, TCMs usually contain hundreds or even thousands of components and only a few of these compounds are responsible for the pharmacological effects. The large number of components in TCMs makes the analysis and screening for bioactive compounds extremely difficult. Therefore, strategies for analysis and screening of bioactive compounds in TCMs have long been a focus of studies on TCMs. Cell membrane chromatography (CMC) has become a useful tool for studying the bioactive compounds of TCMs. This review summarizes the principles, characteristics, and application of CMC, and the possible problems faced when working with TCMs. This method will likely become increasingly important for screening and analysis of hioactive compounds in TCMs. 展开更多

[Objective] This study aimed to determine the optimal process conditions for extraction of anti-allergic active ingredient from citrus peels. [Method] Crude anti- allergic active extracts of citrus peels were extracted. Effects of extraction conditions including extraction temperature, ethanol concentration, extraction time and liquid-to-solid ratio on extraction were explored with single-factor experiment, and the extrac- tion process was optimized with orthogonal experiment. [Result] Based on the single- factor experiment and orthogonal experiment, the optimal extraction condition for crude anti-allergic active extracts of citrus peels were determined to be under extraction temperature of 60℃, ethanol concentration of 70%, extraction time of 60 min, liquid-to-solid ratio of 1:25 and twice extraction. [Concluslon] This process condition is of simple operation and high extraction efficiency, which is environment-friendly and suitable for the extraction of crude anti-allergic active extracts from citrus peels. This study provided a new approach and research ideas for the effective and rapid extraction of anti-allergic active ingredient in citrus peels. 展开更多

Food Ingredients Identification from Dish Images by Deep Learning

Diet plays an important role in people’s daily life with its strong correlation to health and chronic diseases. Meanwhile, deep based food computing emerges to provide lots of works which including food recognition, food retrieval, and food recommendation, and so on. This work focuses on the food recognition, specially, the ingredients identification from food images. The paper proposes two types of ways for ingredient identification. Type1 method involves the combination of salient ingredients classifier with salient ingredient identifiers. Type 2 method introduces the segment-based classifier. Furthermore, this work chooses 35 kinds of ingredients in the daily life as identification categories, and constructs three kinds of novel datasets for establishing the ingredient identification models. All of the classifiers and identifiers are trained on Resnet50 by transfer learning. Many experiments are conducted to analyze the effectiveness of proposed methods. As the results, Salient ingredients classifier predict one ingredient and achieves 91.97% on test set of salient ingredients dataset and 82.48% on test dish image dataset. Salient ingredients identifiers predict remained ingredients and achieve mean accuracy of 85.96% on test dish image dataset. Furthermore, Segment-based classifier achieves 94.81% on test set of segment-based ingredients dataset. 展开更多

In the past two decades, a considerable amount of research has focused on the determination of the digestible(DE) and metabolizable energy(ME) contents of feed ingredients fed to swine. Compared with the DE and ME systems, the net energy(NE) system is assumed to be the most accurate estimate of the energy actually available to the animal. However, published data pertaining to the measured NE content of ingredients fed to growing pigs are limited. Therefore, the Feed Data Group at the Ministry of Agricultural Feed Industry Centre(MAFIC) located at China Agricultural University has evaluated the NE content of many ingredients using indirect calorimetry. The present review summarizes the NE research works conducted at MAFIC and compares these results with those from other research groups on methodological aspect. These research projects mainly focus on estimating the energy requirements for maintenance and its impact on the determination, prediction, and validation of the NE content of several ingredients fed to swine. The estimation of maintenance energy is affected by methodology, growth stage,and previous feeding level. The fasting heat production method and the curvilinear regression method were used in MAFIC to estimate the NE requirement for maintenance. The NE contents of different feedstuffs were determined using indirect calorimetry through standard experimental procedure in MAFIC. Previously generated NE equations can also be used to predict NE in situations where calorimeters are not available. Although popular, the caloric efficiency is not a generally accepted method to validate the energy content of individual feedstuffs. In the future,more accurate and dynamic NE prediction equations aiming at specific ingredients should be established, and more practical validation approaches need to be developed. 展开更多
