Exploration of English Teaching Reform:Case Study of USST Optoelectronic Information Science and Engineering Major

With the vigorous development of Sino-foreign cooperative education,English teaching for specialized courses has become a crucial link in cultivating internationalized professionals.This paper takes the Optoelectronic Information Science and Engineering(Sino-German Cooperation)major of the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology as the research object,and deeply analyzes the dilemmas faced by English teaching in this major,such as significant differences in students’English foundations,poor adaptability of teaching resources,and insufficient cultivation of cross-cultural communication skills.Based on this,a series of teaching reform strategies are proposed,covering aspects,such as optimizing teaching objectives,innovating curriculum settings,changing teaching methods,strengthening the construction of the teaching staff,and improving the teaching evaluation system.Specific teaching reform cases are also incorporated,aiming to improve the quality of English teaching for specialized courses and cultivate internationalized talents with solid professional knowledge and excellent English capabilities. 展开更多

Supported by the spatial analysis feature of geographic information science and assessment model of regional debris flows, hazards degrees of the debris flows in the Upper Yangtze River Watershed (UYRW) are divided into five grades based on grid cell. The area of no danger, light danger, medium danger, severe danger and extreme severe danger regions respectively are 278 000, 288 000, 217 000, 127 000, 15 000 km^2. Furthermore, the counties in the UYRW are classified into four classes based on the hazards degrees in each county. The number of severe danger, medium danger, light danger and no danger counties respectively are 49, 82, 77 and 105. The assessment results will be provided for the hazards forecasting and mitigation in the UYRW and ongoing regionalization of Main Function Regions in China as data and technique framework. 展开更多

Since the introduction of geographic information systems(GIS)in the 1960s,it has evolved tremendously to an extent that it permeates our daily lives.Initially,GIS usage started in the developed countries and now increasingly filtered to developing countries.The town planning profession was one of the early adopters of GIS.Geospatial information is a useful source of data that is needed in urban planning.In these days of the New Urban Agenda 2030,smart cities are even more required from planners in using geospatial information to face urban challenges such as sustainable urban development and climate change.Although GIS has promised a lot for urban planning,it has not reached its full potential.Moreover,many studies have focused on developed countries with limited studies on geospatial information application in municipalities and GIS education from a perspective of developing countries.In this study,a survey on the usage of geospatial information science(GSIS)in two cities,namely Bulawayo in Zimbabwe and Ekurhuleni in South Africa,was conducted,and an overview of the state of GIS curricula in planning schools is discussed.The results indicate that considerable progress has been made in the application of geospatial information in municipal planning;however,there are impediments limiting the full utilization of geospatial information in local municipalities.These impediments include:inadequate GIS curricula in planning schools,lack of resources,and lack of political will.These challenges manifest differently in well-resourced municipalities and those with limited resources.The study proposes planning-relevant GIS curricula to improve the level of GIS use in planning practice. 展开更多

Metrics have emerged as an important tool for quantitatively evaluating researchers from a variety of perspectives,including research impact,research quality,interdisciplinarity,and cross-disciplinarity.Especially in the field of library and information science,many previous studies have highlighted the characteristics of researchers in this field.However,only a minority of the studies address the aspect of diversity in research topics.The purpose of this study is to(1)evaluate the topic diversity of researchers in library and information science and(2)examine the relationships between the researcher topic diversity and research impact.We propose an indicator to quantify author topic diversity,which we refer to as author topic diversity(ATD).Latent Dirichlet Allocation(LDA)is used to detect topics in the field,while cosine similarity is used to calculate the diversity of research topics in a given researcher’s publications.The results show that topic diversity in the field of library and information science varies greatly from author to author.In addition,weak positive correlations are found between the ATD and citation indicators,suggesting that engaging in diversified topics may lead to higher research impact. 展开更多
