To mitigate the catastrophic impacts of climate change,many measures and strategies have been designed and implemented to encourage people to change their daily behaviors for a low-carbon society transition.However,mo...To mitigate the catastrophic impacts of climate change,many measures and strategies have been designed and implemented to encourage people to change their daily behaviors for a low-carbon society transition.However,most people generate carbon emissions through their daily activities in space and time.They are also exposed to multiple environmental factors(e.g.,air pollution,noise,and greenspace).Changing people’s behaviors to reduce carbon emissions can also influence their multiple environmental exposures and further influence their health outcomes.Thus,this study seeks to examine the associations between individuals’daily carbon footprints and their exposures to multiple environmental factors(i.e.,air pollution,noise,and greenspace)across different spa-tial and temporal contexts using individual-level data collected by portable real-time sensors,an activity-travel diary,and a questionnaire from four communities in Hong Kong.The results first indicated that individuals’car-bon footprints of daily activities varied across different spatial and temporal contexts,with home and nighttime having the highest estimated carbon footprints.We also found that activity carbon footprints have a positive asso-ciation with PM2.5,which is particularly strong at home and from morning to nighttime,and mixed associations with noise(positive at home and nighttime,while negative in other places and during travel,from morning to afternoon).Besides,carbon footprints also have consistent negative associations with shrubland and woodland across different spatial and temporal contexts.The findings can provide essential insights into effective measures for promoting the transition to a low-carbon society.展开更多
Many digital platforms have employed free-content promotion strategies to deal with the high uncertainty levels regarding digital content products.However,the diversity of digital content products and user heterogenei...Many digital platforms have employed free-content promotion strategies to deal with the high uncertainty levels regarding digital content products.However,the diversity of digital content products and user heterogeneity in content preference may blur the impact of platform promotions across users and products.Therefore,free-content promotion strategies should be adapted to allocate marketing resources optimally and increase revenue.This study develops personal-ized free-content promotion strategies based on individual-level heterogeneous treatment effects and explores the causes of their heterogeneity,focusing on the moderating effect of user engagement-related variables.To this end,we utilize ran-dom field experimental data provided by a top Chinese e-book platform.We employ a framework that combines machine learning with econometric causal inference methods to estimate individual treatment effects and analyze their potential mechanisms.The analysis shows that,on average,free-content promotions lead to a significant increase in consumer pay-ments.However,the higher the level of user engagement,the lower the payment lift caused by promotions,as more-engaged users are more strongly affected by the cannibalization effect of free-content promotion.This study introduces a novel causal research design to help platforms improve their marketing strategies.展开更多
Despite it is widely accepted that intrapopulation variation is fundamental to ecological and evolutionary processes,this level of information has only recently been included into network analysis of species/populatio...Despite it is widely accepted that intrapopulation variation is fundamental to ecological and evolutionary processes,this level of information has only recently been included into network analysis of species/population interactions.When done,it has revealed non-random patterns in the distribution of trophic resources.Nestedness in resource use among individuals is the most recurrent observed pattern,often accompanied by an absence of modularity,but no previous studies examine bipartite modularity.We use network analysis to describe the diet composition of the Balearic endemic lizard Podarcis lilfordi in 2 islets at population and individual levels,based on the occurrence of food items in fecal samples.Our objectives are to 1)compare niche structure at both levels,2)characterize niche partition using nestedness and modularity,and 3)assess how size,sex,season,and spatial location influence niche structure.At population-level niche width was wide,but narrow at the level of the individual.Both islet networks were nested,indicating similar ranking of the food preferences among individuals,but also modular,which was partially explained by seasonality.Sex and body size did not notably affect diet composition.Large niche overlap and therefore possibly relaxed competition were observed among females in one of the islets and during spring on both islets.Likewise,higher modularity in autumn suggests that higher competition could lead to specialization in both populations,because resources are usually scarce in this season.The absence of spatial location influence on niche might respond to fine-grained spatio-temporally distribution of food resources.Behavioral traits,not included in this study,could also influence resource partitioning.展开更多

I describe the main statistical approach for how repeated records of individuals and a description of the environment (E) allow quantification of variation in plasticity across individuals (IxE) and genotypes (GxE) in wild populations. Based on a literature review of life-history and behavioural studies on plasticity in the wild, I discuss the present state of the two objectives listed above. Few studies have quantified GxE of labile traits in wild populations, and it is likely that power to detect statistically sig- nificant GxE is lacking. Apart from the issue of whether it is heritable, plasticity tends to correlate with average trait expression (not fully supported by the few genetic estimates available) and may thus be evolutionary constrained in this way. Individ- ual-specific estimates of plasticity tend to be related to other traits of the individual (including fitness), but these analyses may be anti-conservative because they predominantly concern stats-on-stats. Despite the increased interest in plasticity in wild popula- tions, the putative lack of power to detect GxE in such populations hinders achieving general insights. I discuss possible steps to invigorate the field by moving away from simply testing for presence of GxE to analyses that 'scale up' to population level proce-sses and by the development of new behavioural theory to identify quantitative genetic parameters which can be estimated展开更多
Postprandial glucose responses provide vital information on an individual’s risk of major diet-related chronic diseases.This study features digital health technology,namely Continuous Glucose Monitoring(CGM)sensors,a...Postprandial glucose responses provide vital information on an individual’s risk of major diet-related chronic diseases.This study features digital health technology,namely Continuous Glucose Monitoring(CGM)sensors,along with mobile devices(iPhones running an app)used to collect data from individuals and their environment,specifically nutritional informa-tion on what they eat and drink.The paper presents a retrospective analysis of data collected during an investigation into the use of a functional drink taken as a supplement with a standardized meal to reduce postprandial responses to that meal.Given that there are consequential differences between individuals in their postprandial glucose responses,these real-world data are analyzed at the level of the individual.The aim of the study was to assess the feasibility of collecting real-world data on supplements and postprandial glucose responses outside of a controlled laboratory environment,synthesizing the data from the different sources,and producing individualized results.Of the 40 individuals invited to conduct 6 tests,3 with and 3 without the supplement,19 provided from 1 to 6 valid tests,producing 0 to 6 comparisons each.Four individuals contributed at least 5 comparisons each,the minimum number required for the exact 1-sided Wilcoxon signed-rank test.The conclusion is that a real-world study of supplements and postprandial glucose responses is feasible,with an increase in the number of tests requested of each individual,a simplification of the testing protocol,and steps taken to reduce the number of invalid tests.展开更多
