Most existing media access control(MAC) protocols in power line communication(PLC) networks just discard the colliding data packets when collision occurs.The collision deteriorates throughput and delay performance of ...Most existing media access control(MAC) protocols in power line communication(PLC) networks just discard the colliding data packets when collision occurs.The collision deteriorates throughput and delay performance of system under high traffic conditions.This article presents a novel media access scheme with fast collision resolution for in-home power line networks.It works by first recognizing the colliding stations through detecting the inserted unique ID sequence ahead of data packets,then the source nodes retransmitting their packets immediately after the collision slot.The proposed protocol maintains the benefits of ALOHA systems.It needs no scheduling overhead and is suitable for bursty sources,such as multimedia data packets.Computer simulations have demonstrated that this approach can achieve high throughput due to its ability of resolving collisions.展开更多
Noni juice, made from the fruit of Morinda citrifolia, is a health-promoting food from the Pacific Islands with an extensive history of traditional use. Human clinical trials have revealed that noni juice has antioxid...Noni juice, made from the fruit of Morinda citrifolia, is a health-promoting food from the Pacific Islands with an extensive history of traditional use. Human clinical trials have revealed that noni juice has antioxidant, immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties. Previously, regular noni juice consumers in Europe and traditional healers in Fiji were surveyed to identify potential noni juice health benefits. But to better understand the perception of its health benefits among those with no previous experience with noni juice, an in-home study was conducted in the United States. Three hundred and nineteen adults with untreated chronic health conditions were provided with a 90-day supply of a blinded (unlabeled) commercial noni juice product (Tahitian Noni<sup>®</sup> Juice), instructed to consume 4 fluid ounces (1/2 cup) each day, and responded to a questionnaire given on days 30, 60 and 90 to evaluate product appeal and perceived effectiveness. A total of 299 people (94%) felt that their health improved in some way after drinking TNJ for 90 days. More than 80% of the subjects reported feeling better or healthier in general. Most participants also concurred with more than two dozen additional positive health perception statements, especially on days 60 and 90. More than 70% of consumers also indicated that noni juice helped them feel better than other wellness supplements they had tried in the past, including other so-called “super fruit” products. These findings seem to corroborate the results of clinical trials and previous consumer surveys regarding the potential for noni juice to provide discernable health benefits when used consistently over time. Such findings may help guide additional placebo-controlled clinical trials in which specific effects may be evaluated more rigorously.展开更多

To solve this problem, an end-to-end transmission time for remaining path(TTRP) metric-based opportunistic routing(TTRPOR) is proposed. Since a local broadcasting scheme is adopted, the algorithm can find the optimal path for forwarding packets in a dynamic PLC network. The closed-form of the outage probability for a PLC channel is derived to estimate the TTRP. It is proved that the average throughput can achieve maximum as the metric TTRP is utilized to sort candidate forwarding nodes.Numerical results show that the end-to-end throughput of networks with TTRPOR, outperforms that of the network adopting DSR and EXOR, especially for the case of varying-topology in-home PLC networks.展开更多
Background As a consequence of the demographic development with increasing proportion of older people,the prevalence of heart failure(HF)is expected to rise with considerable economic and societal costs.However,knowle...Background As a consequence of the demographic development with increasing proportion of older people,the prevalence of heart failure(HF)is expected to rise with considerable economic and societal costs.However,knowledge on cardiac structure and function among population-based samples of the exceptional old is lacking.Methods Population-based study of all persons(no exclusion criteria)living in the western part of Denmark and turning 100 years in the year 2015.In-home face-to-face interviews were conducted,and echocardiography and blood sampling for plasma Brain Natriuretic Peptide(BNP)were offered to those who were able to give consent.Results Out of 303 eligible,238(79%)participated,of which 125(53%)accepted echocardiography.Left ventricular(LV)dysfunction was present in 68(54%)of the participants of whom less than half had HF symptoms.Pulmonary hypertension was present in 31(42%)with no correlation to LV function.The well-known association between increased level of BNP and the prevalence of LV dysfunction could not be confirmed.Conclusions This in-home echocardiographic study shows that more than half of the participants had LV dysfunction,although mostly asymptomatic.There was no association between heart failure symptoms and LV dysfunction.Furthermore,BNP seems to have lost its biomarker potential to rule out heart failure in centenarians.Due to the latter,and the questionable symptom validity among centenarians,the current criteria to diagnose HF might be less valid in a centenarian population than in younger olds.展开更多

The global demand for Plant-based meat analogues(PBMAs)is rising due to increasing vegetarianism,health and environmental concerns,and animal-welfare issues.However,PBMAs encounter several challenges that limit widesp...The global demand for Plant-based meat analogues(PBMAs)is rising due to increasing vegetarianism,health and environmental concerns,and animal-welfare issues.However,PBMAs encounter several challenges that limit widespread acceptance,including inadequate physico-chemical,sensory,and nutritional attributes,and concerns about over-processing and potential food-safety risks.To address these challenges,initiatives such as using highquality raw materials,blending various plant protein sources,and employing innovative processing techniques are underway.Consumer acceptance of PBMAs also depends on the type of in-home cooking method used to prepare these foods,and the goal in many cases is for the quality attributes after cooking to resemble that of meat.The objective of this review is to compare the effects of in-home cooking methods on the quality of meat products to better understand how PBMAs will perform relative to their animal-based counterparts.Here,research articles that evaluate the impact of different cooking methods(e.g.,baking and pan-frying)on the quality of meat and PBMAs were systematically summarized and compared to demonstrate trends in changes related to the physicochemical,sensory,and nutritional attributes of these products.The results revealed that the type of cooking method significantly influenced consumers’acceptance of meat and PBMAs.Changes in physical properties such as cooking loss and water holding capacity(WHC)can affect texture and were dependent on cooking temperatures.However,these changes were not independent of the protein source(PBMAs)or muscle type(meat).For example,cooking at 70℃decreased the amount of sulfhydryl content in PBMAs compared to pork and beef burgers(20μmol/g vs.65μmol/g protein,respectively).Conversely,when cooking temperatures(>120℃)were used,maillard reaction resulted in favourable sensory(appearance and flavour)attributes in both types of products,however,in the presence of sugars and the amino acid asparagine,concerns about the presence of chemical hazards such as acrylamide increased.Microwave cooking also increased WHC and oil absorption properties of plant proteins which improved the mouthfeel of PMBAs.In conclusion,there is a need to optimize in-home cooking techniques to enhance desirable textures and flavours in PBMAs which will improve consumer acceptability of these products.展开更多
