This essential yardstick, often referred to as the impact of a specific researcher, is assessed through the use of various metrics. While researchers may be acquainted with such matrices, many do not know how to use them to enhance their careers. In addition to these metrics, a number of other factors should be taken into consideration to objectively evaluate a scientist's profile as a researcher and academician. Moreover, each metric has its own limitations that need to be considered when selecting an appropriate metric for evaluation. This paper provides a broad overview of the wide array of metrics currently in use in academia and research. Popular metrics are discussed and defined, including traditional metrics and article-level metrics, some of which are applied to researchers for a greater understanding of a particular concept, including varicocete that is the thematic area of this Special Issue of Asian Journal of Andrology. We recommend the combined use of quantitative and qualitative evaluation using judiciously selected metrics for a more objective assessment of scholarly output and research impact.展开更多

The system model of roof-coal-floor was established. Based on the RFPA software, rock fracture process analysis system, the numerical test of deformation, fracture and energy transmission of nonlinear and nonhomogeneous rock-coal system, and the numerical test and evaluating method of impact trend of reck-coal system were achieved. When the same coal seam was in different roof and floor conditions, the fracture process of reck-coal system can be classified as gradual, sudden and delayed fracture three kinds, and their impact trend can be classified as void, intense and medium correspondingly. The rock-coal system's impact trend is evaluated by the system impact index p and burst expanding forms. The criteria μ are μ〈1.0, 1.0≤μ〈l .5 and μ≥1.5 when the impact trend is void, intense or medium, which are tested and verified by the No.2 and No.4 coal seams in Sun- cun mine.展开更多

Some Physico-chemical and biological assessment were carried out at three sampling stations located at downstream (AR-1), midstream (AR-2) and upstream (AR-3) with different levels of disturbance. Results of measured physico-chemical parameters showed that there was no significant difference (P > 0.05) in temperature, total acidity and chloride values between the sampling stations. Although, Total solids, conductivity, DO, Sulphate, BOD and COD were significantly higher (P < 0.05) at Stn.AR-1 than at Stns. AR-2 and AR-3, all physico-chemical parameters measured were within the limits of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) regulatory standards except for high COD concentration in downstream station. Aquatic vegetation (macrophyte) diversity was relatively abundant at upstream and downstream stations, suggesting possible impact of human activities on macrophyte diversity at midstream station where highest level of disturbance occurred. Chironomid larvae were the most abundant invertebrate fauna found in all three sampling stations but more abundant at sampling station AR-2 which corresponds to point of effluent entry to river where human activities is most intense. There is evidence that anthropogenic activities impact on the water quality of Abesan River. Biotic indices such as Sorensenen’s Index of Similarity and Margalef Index show that Abesan River is lightly polluted. The implications of these results and the need to monitor the water quality of Abesan River are highlighted.展开更多

The frequency and severity of drought events may increase in the future due to climate change. We have developed three meteorological drought scenarios for Austria in the period 2008-2040. The scenarios are defined based on a dry day index which is combined with bootstrapping from an observed daily weather dataset of the period 1975-2007. The severity of long-term drought scenarios is characterized by lower annual and seasonal precipitation amounts as well as more significant temperature increases compared to the observations. The long-term impacts of the drought scenarios on Austrian crop production have been analyzed with the biophysical process model EPIC (Environmental Policy Integrated Climate). Our simulation outputs show that—for areas with historical mean annual precipitation sums below 850 mm— already slight increases in dryness result in significantly lower crop yields i.e. depending on the drought severity, between 0.6% and 0.9% decreases in mean annual dry matter crop yields per 1.0% decrease in mean annual precipitation sums. The EPIC results of more severe droughts show that spring and summer precipitation may become a limiting factor in crop production even in regions with historical abundant precipitation.展开更多

Various influencing elements exist, and varied geological and mining circumstances might result in diverse coal burst phenomena. The impact propensity of coal has variations as a result of the distinct physical and mechanical qualities of each. To identify the impact propensity of coal and then understand the rules of coal burst occurrence, laboratory tests can be conducted to identify the physical and mechanical parameters affecting coal samples. The mechanical properties, energy absorption, and energy dissipation characteristics of coal samples were examined experimentally in this paper using coal samples that were taken from the mine. On the basis of the evaluation of the impact inclination parameters for four fundamental coal samples, novel impact inclination indicators and the relationship between the fractures in the coal sample and the impact inclination parameters were discussed. The following are the key conclusions: 1) On-site samples of No. 15 coal from the Qi yuan Coal Mine were taken (15 s) and processed in accordance with the guidelines for the coal specimen impact inclination test. The accuracy of the specimen was sufficient for the test. 2) Analysis is done on the mechanical relevance and calculation techniques of the four fundamental coal sample impact tendency characteristics, dynamic failure time (DT), elastic strain energy index (WET), impact energy index (KE), as well as uniaxial compressive strength (RC). 3) Regarding the rock burst danger of rock samples, the potential use of the ratio of pre-peak and post- peak deformation modulus to Kλ and the residual elastic strain energy index CEF as the impact propensity indices of coal samples are discussed. It is possible to utilize two new impact propensity indices to evaluate the impact propensity of coal samples, according to test results that reveal a linear correlation between two new impact inclination indexes and four fundamental impact tendency indexes. 4) The statistical analysis of the crack ratio with the four impact propensity indicators after coal specimen failure, and the correlation among the crack ratio with the indicators, are both done. The findings indicate that the four impact propensity indicators have a linear relationship with the crack ratio of the coal sample surface cracks.展开更多

This threw light on the extent of damage and alteration of water quality in Port Harcourt metropolis as a result of the proliferation of petrol service stations especially the condition of ground and nearby surface water. This serves as a useful tool to government and regulatory authorities for planning especially due to lack of central water supply system in Port Harcourt metropolis. The parameters studied were sampled, measured and analyzed using in situ and other standard methods. Remarkable results above permissible limits of interest for physicochemical parameter analysis revealed pH values from 4.6 to 6.8, electrical conductivity from 0.002 µS/cm to 0.42 µS/cm, salinity from 3 ppm to 4050 ppm, and temperatures from 19.9˚C to 32.6˚C. Total dissolved solids (TDS) varied from 7 ppm to 1000 ppm, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) from 0.167 mg/L to 2.167 mg/L, chemical oxygen demand (COD) from 0.257 mg/L to 3.253 mg/L, and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations from 1.70 mg/L to 4.30 mg/L. Specifically, water samples from NNPC Filling Station (Choba) and Eneka Pond displayed “Poor” water quality with WQI values of 112.003 and 112.076, respectively. Similarly, ALLTEC Filling Station (Eneka) and TOTAL Filling Station (Rumuomasi) had “Poor” water quality with WQI values of 173.707 and 180.946, respectively. In contrast, Excelsis Filling Station (Akpajo) demonstrated “Good” water quality with a WQI of 85.2072, while Total Filling Stations (Slaughter) and Choba River revealed “unsuitable for drinking” water quality with WQI values of 552.461 and 654.601, respectively. Slaughter River also indicated very poor water quality with a WQI of 442.024. The physicochemical and nutrient analyses of the water samples showed that activities of the filling stations within the study area may have polluted groundwater in the environment posing poor aesthetics and great health risk to consumers of the water bodies. The findings underscore the need for immediate remediation efforts and stricter regulatory measures to protect water quality. The study concluded that surface and groundwater near petrol service stations in Port Harcourt are unfit for drinking and irrigation purposes without adequate treatment.展开更多

文摘Traditionally, the success of a researcher is assessed by the number of publications he or she publishes in peer-reviewed, indexed, high impact journals. We recommend the combined use of quantitative and qualitative evaluation using judiciously selected metrics for a more objective assessment of scholarly output and research impact.

文摘The impact trend of reck-coal system was studied by the method of accumulating and releasing of deformation energy and interaction of rock-coal system. The criteria μ are μ〈1.0, 1.0≤μ〈l .5 and μ≥1.5 when the impact trend is void, intense or medium, which are tested and verified by the No.2 and No.4 coal seams in Sun- cun mine.

文摘The method,in which a few carats of diamond grits are placed inside a capsule together with a steel ball, shaken for a number of times, and the unbroken ratio of the grits is then used to evaluate the quality of the diamond, has been well established for many years. However, the unbroken percentage,in an equivalent view, represents the impact toughness of the grits and cannot reflect the value of the crushing energy. Most of the previous empirical formulas obtained from experiments by scholars cannot be applied to practical tests. In this paper,a dimensional analysis was applied to investigate the impact toughness experiment, and the dimensionless relationship has been built among those variables such as the toughness index, the impact time, the impact frequency and the crushing energy per unit area.According to the results of a large number of experiments with synthetic diamond grits of mesh size 45/50,the percentage of the broken grits H is proportional to the impact time T^(1.14) when the impact frequency is 2400 r/min,and the impact frequency f^(2.576) when the number of impacts is 2000.
文摘The impact of anthropogenic disturbances on water quality parameters, diversity of macrophytes and benthic macro fauna of Abesan River, Lagos, Nigeria is reported. The implications of these results and the need to monitor the water quality of Abesan River are highlighted.
文摘Droughts have serious and widespread impacts on crop production with substantial economic losses. The EPIC results of more severe droughts show that spring and summer precipitation may become a limiting factor in crop production even in regions with historical abundant precipitation.
文摘Coal burst remains one of the gravest safety risks that will be encountered in mining in the future, because the stress conditions will become more complex as mining depths increase. The findings indicate that the four impact propensity indicators have a linear relationship with the crack ratio of the coal sample surface cracks.

文摘This study examines the multi-scale spatio-temporal evolution of drought characteristics in Zhejiang Province. We propose a comprehensive index to identify drought days and events by incorporating three widely used monitoring indices:the precipitation anomaly percentage, relative humidity index, and standardized precipitation index. The analysis reveals a significant long-term decreasing trend in the frequency of drought days across Zhejiang Province from 1971 to 2020,with a total of 170 drought events being identified. An Empirical Orthogonal Function(EOF)analysis of precipitation anomalies during these events reveals a dominant province-wide monopole mode, alongside a secondary northsouth inverse dipole,a third tripole, and a fourth southwest-northeast inverse dipole.Furthermore,a composite analysis of the drought events demonstrates a widespread increase in temperature across all stations, with a strong spatial correspondence between the temperature anomalies and their associated frequency. The study identifies 21 extreme drought events, characterized by spatially inconsistent precipitation patterns across the entire province.
文摘This study assessed the impact of petrol service stations on physico-chemical water quality in Port Harcourt metropolis, Rivers State. The study concluded that surface and groundwater near petrol service stations in Port Harcourt are unfit for drinking and irrigation purposes without adequate treatment.
