This paper mainly presents evidence for a relationship between language structure and meaning in EkeGusii,a Bantu language spoken in Kenya.The main argument is that the structure of language mirrors the structure of reality.A brief overview of other scholars demonstrates that diagrammatic iconicity shows universal tendencies.Five main ideas run down the discussion.Firstly,in EkeGusii,speakers sub-consciously cluster sounds around related meanings,evidencing gestalt and relative iconicity.Secondly,there is evidence of overlap of morphological and phonetic iconicity,an aspect of phonaesthesia.Thirdly,reduplication in certain infinitives demonstrates the reality of phono-iconicity in EkeGusii,augmented by unpleasant sound sequences.Fourthly,certain onomatopes in EkeGusii are actually diagrammatic,indicating that there is no one stop criterion for classifying overlapping types of icons.And finally,the paper posits that iconicity intersects with arbitrariness showing that language has both motivated and discrete symbols. 展开更多

This article draws on the theory of poetic iconicity as expounded by Margret.H.Freeman to offer a tentative study on how multimodality affects its realization through an analysis of a pictorial narrative by a Taiwan Residents writer—Jimmy’s The Moon Forgets.The analysis shows that,different from its performance in verbal texts,poetic iconicity in a multimodal literary work is achieved by tapping the immense potential inherent in pictorial-verbal conf igurations.Diagrammatic iconicity,seen in its narrative structure and in the multimodal configuration of the story,is found in this case to serve the global metaphor LIFE-DEATH IS A CYCLE and contribute to an aesthetically wild ecstasy.The metaphorical implications in relation to the theme within the scope of diagrammatic iconicity help constitute the ineffable charm of this pictorial fiction.Multimodal poetic iconicity—deploying diverse structural patterns and relational conf igurations to create an artistic resemblance to the abstract patterns in feelings and thoughts—is shown to be an important contributing factor in the effectiveness of the work’s literary communication. 展开更多

Instead of rejecting the notion of iconicity, as has often been the case in semiotics, we should inquire deeper into its specifi c nature, and also into the peculiar way in which it is manifested by pictures. In order to show why Umberto Eco, Nelson Goodman, and others were fundamentally wrong in their classical critique of iconicity, we will pursue a close reading of Peirce, but we will interpret his work in accordance with more recent fi ndings in cognitive and perceptual psychology, and we will modify the theory as a result of our interpretation. At the same time, we will rely on phenomenological insights, both those made explicit by Edmund Husserl in his studies of pictorial consciousness, and those which are implicit, notably in the work of the psychologist James Gibson. As a result, we will distinguish iconicity as such from iconic grounds and iconic signs, and we will delineate two very different kinds of iconic signs, which we will call primary and secondary iconic signs. Even so, pictorial iconicity has itspeculiarities, which we will also try to elucidate. In so doing, we will consider to what extent the linguistic model is still helpful, and in which respects it is misleading. 展开更多

目的:观察ICON渗透树脂联合Opalescence皓齿美白在氟斑牙修复中的应用效果。方法:选取2023年1—12月该社区卫生服务中心口腔科收治的72例轻中度氟斑牙患者进行前瞻性研究,采用抽签法将其分为对照组和观察组各36例。对照组采用Opalescenc... 目的:观察ICON渗透树脂联合Opalescence皓齿美白在氟斑牙修复中的应用效果。方法:选取2023年1—12月该社区卫生服务中心口腔科收治的72例轻中度氟斑牙患者进行前瞻性研究,采用抽签法将其分为对照组和观察组各36例。对照组采用Opalescence皓齿美白修复,观察组在对照组基础上联合ICON渗透树脂修复,比较两组美白修复效果、修复前后牙齿敏感性[视觉模拟评分法(VAS)]评分和美白修复满意度。结果:观察组美白修复总有效率为95.31%(203/213),高于对照组的88.89%(192/216),差异有统计学意义(P<0.05);修复后1周,两组VAS评分均低于修复后即刻,但组间比较,差异无统计学意义(P>0.05);观察组美白修复满意度为97.22%(35/36),高于对照组的77.78%(28/36),差异有统计学意义(P<0.05)。结论:ICON渗透树脂联合Opalescence皓齿美白可提高氟斑牙患者美白修复总有效率和美白修复满意度,效果优于单纯Opalescence皓齿美白修复。 展开更多

Topological Characterization and Predictive Modeling of Graph Energy in Ionic Covalent Organic Frameworks

Covalent organic frameworks(COFs)are crystalline materials composed of covalently bonded organic ligands with chemically permeable structures.Their crystallization is achieved by balancing thermal reversibility with the dynamic nature of the frameworks.Ionic covalent organic frameworks(ICOFs)are a subclass that incorporates ions in positive,negative,or zwitterionic forms into the frameworks.In particular,spiroborate-derived linkages enhance both the structural diversity and functionality of ICOFs.Unlike electroneutral COFs,ICOFs can be tailored by adjusting the types and arrangements of ions,influencing their formation mechanisms and physical properties.This study focuses on analyzing the graph-based structural characteristics of ICOFs with spiroborate linkages.We compute graph based entropy using hybrid topological descriptors that capture both local and global structural patterns.Furthermore,statistical regression models are developed to predict graph energies of larger-dimensional ICOF structures based on these descriptors.To ensure the robustness and accuracy of our results,we validated our findings using a pseudocode algorithm specifically designed for computing degree-based topological indices.This computational validation confirms the consistency of the derived descriptors and supports their applicability in quantitative structure-property relationship(QSPR)modeling.Overall,this approach provides valuable insights for future applications in material design and property prediction within the framework of ICOFs. 展开更多

Iconicity and mimicry represent two distinct but related fields in semiotic studies. Academic history shows both fields have crossed the border between Nature and Culture and have thus blurred the distinction of the two domains in certain aspects. In terms of etymology and history of ideas, both terms are traceable to classical antiquity: one to Plato, the other to Aristotle. In modern research history, iconicity and mimicry have curiously converged in Peirce. For all their supposedly close relationship, the two areas have rarely crisscrossed and to date there has not been sufficient attention paid to "iconicity in mimicry" or "mimicry as icon"—except in biosemiotic studies, probably because of the empirical visibility, transparency and hence selfevidence of their identification. As to the fledgling applied science of biomimetics, for all its enviable achievements in engineering and industry, researchers in the field have shown little interest in the conceptual history of mimicry, let alone that of iconicity. The pages that follow will offer a philological excursus, which hopes to bring Peirce into rapport with Plato, and link current "biomimicry" to its classical prototype in Aristotle's writings on animals. 展开更多

The analysis argues for a revised classification of discourse within mainstream communication scholarship that recognizes only content and relational elements.Using Posner’s(1982)semiotic work on poetic communication and drawing from Peirce’s trichotomy of signs,we see that an aesthetic dimension of a First subsists within all events of discourse.The significant effects/affects of Firstness transpire along a continuum depending upon the operative interpretants in a given context.Taking the voice of enunciation as a phonetic exemplar of an extra-linguistic aesthetic,I then examine the functions of poetic iconicity provided by Brandt’s(2013)typology,discussing it in relation to Peirce’s triadic structure and the art of conversation.Clarifying the semiotic and phenomenological affordances for each component of discourse provides a communicological perspective.Overall,such a treatment lends theoretical support for the commonsense assumption that conversation is an art form.Conversation potentializes aesthetic experience in Dewey’s sense of the term. 展开更多

This paper proposes that poetic form is a phonetic-conceptual integration that works from the iconic relations and cognitive mapping between the phonetic complex and the conceptualaffective complex,and that such mappings can be analyzed using the blending model by Fauconnier and Turner.Because literary expressions maintain a relation of iconicity with its meaning,it is possible to perform a metaphorical reading of the text as a single poetic form or a sole symbolic construct.As an example of the application of this model in literary analysis,some stylistic strategies from "Los inocentes",by Ines Arredondo,are analyzed with the purpose of showing the effects of iconic relationships that are created between the phonetic complex and the conceptual-affective complex at the moment of building the meaning of the literary text. 展开更多
