Interpreting is a fast-paced activity where interpreters must make quick choices when faced with uncertainty. This study looks at how professional interpreters handle linguistic uncertainty in English-Chinese sight translation, with a focus on the strategies they use. By analyzing transcription data alongside instructor evaluations, we found that interpreters relied most on creative interpretation and omission, while strategies like paraphrasing, simplification, transformation, addition, and generalization appeared less often. The results show a clear preference for strategies that keep communication flowing without adding unnecessary cognitive load. These findings support the Processing Economy Hypothesis, which suggests interpreters naturally seek efficient ways to process language while maintaining meaning. The study also highlights practical implications for interpreter training, emphasizing the value of flexible, economy-oriented strategies to help interpreters stay fluent under pressure. 展开更多

Topographic maps,as essential tools and sources of information for geographic research, contain precise spatial locations and rich map features, and they illustrate spatio-temporal information on the distribution and differences of various surface features.Currently, topographic maps are mainly stored in raster and vector formats.Extraction of the spatio-temporal knowledge in the maps—such as spatial distribution patterns, feature relationships, and dynamic evolution—still primarily relies on manual interpretation. However, manual interpretation is time-consuming and laborious, especially for large-scale,long-term map knowledge extraction and application. With the development of artificial intelligence technology,it is possible to improve the automation level of map knowledge interpretation. Therefore, the present study proposes an automatic interpretation method for raster topographic map knowledge based on deep learning. To address the limitations of current data-driven intelligent technology in learning map spatial relations and cognitive logic,we establish a formal description of map knowledge by mapping the relationship between map knowledge and features, thereby ensuring interpretation accuracy.Subsequently, deep learning techniques are employed to extract map features automatically, and the spatio-temporal knowledge is constructed by combining formal descriptions of geographic feature knowledge.Validation experiments demonstrate that the proposed method effectively achieves automatic interpretation of spatio-temporal knowledge of geographic features in maps, with an accuracy exceeding 80%.The findings of the present study contribute to machine understanding of spatio-temporal differences in map knowledge and advances the intelligent interpretation and utilization of cartographic information. 展开更多

In the enterprise setting, earnings conference call remains a rarely explored field. This thesis offers a descriptive study on assessing interpreting quality from perspectives of fidelity, fluency, and appropriacy. As the corpus, Tencent 2022 Third Quarter Result Announcement provides an ideal transcript to the author to conduct its analysis. Interpreting is frequently done without bearing in mind the multitude of factors that can affect the quality of interpreting. Drawing a conclusion that the interpreter does make a lot of omissions, pauses and hesitations posing a negative effect on the fidelity, fluency and accuracy of the interpreting, the present author suggests that more preparation should be done for improving performance, such as terminologies, company background information, a reasonable speech rate, good image and acoustic quality, and so on. 展开更多

Interpreting activity is considered a high-anxiety activity due to its immediacy, multitasking, complexity of cognitive processing, and uncertainty of cognitive processing. Research has shown that interpreting anxiety, as the biggest emotional obstacle in the interpreting process, is the main emotional factor that leads to individual differences in interpreting. Students often claim to have fear or anxiety behaviors in interpreting exams, interpreting competitions, and interpreting classes. However, the research on interpreting teaching attaches importance to the cultivation of language knowledge, cultural knowledge, and interpreting skills, and does not pay enough attention to emotional factors such as motivation and anxiety in interpreting learning, which makes it difficult for the cultivated interpreters to meet the requirements of professional practice. In recent years, virtual reality technology (VR) has been gradually applied in the field of foreign language and interpreting teaching for creating a real, interactive and experiential language learning environment. Situated Learning Theory stresses that the fundamental mechanism for learning to take place is for individuals to participate in the real context in which knowledge is generated, and to realize the construction of knowledge through the interaction with the community of practice and the environment. Virtual reality technology can satisfy the needs of language learners for real contexts by providing learners with immersive, imaginative and interactive scenario simulations, and has a certain positive effect on alleviating learning anxiety. Therefore, relying on the virtual simulation course “United Nations Kubuqi International Desert Ecological Science and Technology Innovation International Volunteer Language Service Practical Training System”, this paper adopts a combination of quantitative and qualitative analyses to investigate the interpretation anxiety level of the interpreter trainees and the factors affecting them in the VR situation to help them discover effective responses to interpreter anxiety. 展开更多

Many delayed-choice experiments based on Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZI) have been considered and made to address the fundamental problem of wave-particle duality. Conventional wisdom long holds that by inserting or removing the second beam splitter (BS2) in a controllable way, microscopic particles (photons, electrons, etc.) transporting within the MZI can lie in the quantum superposition of the wave and particle state as ψ= aw ψ wave + ap ψ particle. Here we present an alternative interpretation to these delayed-choice experiments. We notice that as the BS2 is purely classical, the inserting and removing operation of the BS2 imposes a time- modulated Hamiltonian H mod (t) = a(t)Hin + b(t)Hout, instead of a quantum superposition of H in and Hour as H = awHin + apHout, to act upon the incident wave function. Solution of this quantum scattering problem, rather than the long held quantum eigen-problem yields a synchronically time-modulated output wave function as ψ mod (t) = a(t) ψ wave +b(t) ψ particle, instead of the stationary quantum superposition state ψ = aw ψ wave + ap ψ particle. As a result, the probability of particle output from the MZI behaves as if they are in the superposition of the wave and particle state when many events over time accumulation are counted and averaged. We expect that these elementary but insightful analyses will shed a new light on exploring basic physics beyond the long-held wisdom of wave-particle duality and the principle of complementarity. 展开更多
